    ABOUT PAPADAKIS RACING:
The Papadakis Racing team began drifting in 2004 and is the most winning team in Formula Drift history, earning the 2015 title with driver Fredric Aasbo, as well as backto back championship titles with driver Tanner Foust in 2007 and 2008. The Rockstar Energy Drink / Nexen Tire Toyota Corolla Hatchback is the latest competition build from the Hawthorne, California, based team.
Team owner Stephan Papadakis is a legend of sport compact racing who began building his reputation in the 1990s with the first front-wheel drive, tube-chassis drag car in the U.S. The team earned multiple records and championships in the discipline, turning in elapsed times and trap speeds previously thought unattainable in front-drive drag cars. Papadakis' successes in front-wheel drive were matched by his efforts in rear-wheel drive when he campaigned a Honda Civic that became just the fifth car to join the NHRA's Sport Compact 200 MPH club

@UC4_hROdH7_Oc4CPH7c-E0Rg this B58 is the modular predecessor of the N54/55 but is now closed deck with diesel components shared from the B57 has forged internals and crankshaft with a high pressure fuel system(that's only in the mk5s B58 not BMW's)has more oil squirters than a normal B58,engine is already hitting over 700hp on stock block and internals with a tune, bigger turbo, and downpipe unopened and has yet to hit its limit in hp. Current mk5 record of hp(for RN)is 527hp with only a tune and downpipes so numbers should climb even high as companies continue the R&D for it.

nonono i read so much more ACTUAL REAL INFORMATION from super duper experts here in the youtube comments. mostly of kids and idiots thinking they could do better and instantly know anything that is wrong with the engine or the supra itself. "this engine will fail. 2JZs NEVER BRAKE even with 500000HP !!!11!!!" or "I am actually 12 years old and saved my milk money. no i have 34,28$ but there is one thing i know for sure. I AM NOT BUYING THAT STUPID PIECE OF SHIT WANNABE SUPRA. FUCK OFF TOYOTA. WONT GET MY MONEY"
btw talking about potential a german youtuber and tuner did a video today, where they JUST did software and nothing else, got it up to 420hp & 460lb/ft. 60-120mph in 8 seconds, which is on par with a porsche gt3 rs. but yeah i guess there is no potential, when 65000€ stock + software keeps up with a 200000€ performance sportscar acceleration wise. DAMN TOYOTA YOU DID DO A BAD JOB :(

@Cole Fawcett the "other" version of the B58 (m240i and others - the Supra version is a mild step up) is at over 700whp and climbing. Japanese tuners get a hold of this (big market) and 1,000 looks easy. A lot of motors can claim that number, but it's a matter of how much money it costs to get it there. I wouldn't personally want anything more than 500, and that's easy.

  • @maneki9neko

This is very helpful. I have never seen a state of the art engine completely dismantled, like this. When I started out in the trade, we rebuilt engines all the time. These days it is rare. Used engines in acceptable condition are cheap and plentiful. I am impressed that you understand features like the rod bearing caps that were fractured to create a unique surface pattern, such that they would re-assemble more precisely. BMW has been building overhead cam,in-line six cylinder engines now for 100 years. The IIIA was introduced in 1917. Four generations of BMW engineers have worked on this platform. I found it very useful to be walked through the current iteration of the design.

This is very typical in air to water setups. There is actually a separate heat exchanger mounted up front to receive air flow like a radiator. A water pump, usually and electronic one, then circulates the coolant through the heat exchanger. Then to the aftercooler in the intake manifold. A lot of supercharged cars are this way. I wont be shocked if they do not add a large front mount air to air intercooler as well during the build, or ditch the water cooled setup entirely.

hambo I could be wrong, but I believe that’s BMW’s Valvetronic. The second shaft allows for a variable intake valve length. Engineering Explained has a video on it. If it’s what I’m thinking of, the throttle body stays open all the time, and the intake valve opens bigger each rotation as the throttle pedal is pressed.
The idea of variable valve length is similar to Nissan’s variable compression engine, where the stroke is variable.

Working as BMW diagnose technician, i'm very very interested in this project, so subbed.
But reading through the comments i'm astounded by the amount of silly misunderstandings. So to straighten out a few:
Yes, the B58 is a BMW engine, but Toyota "persueded" BMW to build it this way, to the standards Toyota wanted. Otherwise you'd be looking at the N55 engine now. The B58 (and the entire car) is a BMW-Toyota collab. Add some Italian "feel" to it, and it could be a centerfold in a dirty magazine.
Timingchain behind cil 6 is there for weightdistribution. This way the engine can be mounted lower down in the car, shaping the sump around the front subframe, not getting in the way of steeringrack etc, and be further behind the front wheels. So big big performancebenefits from something as simple as timingchains and oilpump at the back of the engine. And with modern silicone sealant leakages are a rarity. I personally have not encountered any timing issues at all with this engine, nor have i heard of any. But yes, if ever there is one, the engine comes out, consuming a lot of time. Can't afford it, don't buy it.
Plastic intakemanifolds are the standard this century, for almost all carbrands. Cast alu manifolds started dying out in the late 90s-early 00s. Productioncosts ofcourse, and plastics improved a lot, a whole lot. Same for valvecovers etc. The aluminium versions crack before the plastic ones do. And plastic saves weight over alu. Thinking of all plastics being a pour material is thinking of the past.
Having the intakesystem on turbocharged engines as low volume as possible greatly improves turbolag, and therefore efficiency. So the watercooled intercooler, on a separate coolingsystem of max 60*C, ( same temp as air from aircooled intercoolers) in the intakemanifold is smart. offcourse it is used in roadgoing cars. But yes, may be changed for trackcars, but that can't really be a big issue for a proper mechanic.
The cilnderhead comes in different versions. Not all have the integrated watercooled exhaustmanifold. Don't know which have what system, but when uprating the engine, the head with the external exhaustmanifold might be worth considering because of extra heatproduction. The integrated cilhead is mainly for efficiency of heatrecovery and -removal depending on current engineworkingconditions. So again very desireable for roaduse. I'll look up the details if i have time.
    Edit:
From the info i have at home:
B58B30M1 M stands for Mittel, midrange poweroutput, has the integrated exhaustmanifold.
B58B30O1 O for Obere, higherrange poweroutput has an external/ more conventional exhaustmanifold.
The coolingmanagementmodule may be out of its comfortzone when B58 produces 1000+ HP, so maybe thats something to look after, but it just might be able to handle M3-kinds of heatproduction 😉. Haven't found any flaws on productioncars with it so far.
About the fuel system... Only to be worked on by people who REALLY!!!!!! (Do not risk an near-unstoppable fuelfire!!!) know what they are doing!!! But watching the next the next vid, @PapadakisRacing what's the plan for your system? Using the direct injection or bypassing it and having it indirect only, since thats what your CAD shows? Would like to see how you'd do it.
Anyway, love to see more of your project, all the best,
    Mechanikos
