- The McLaren F1 and the GMA T.50 together on the road for the very first time! Need we say more? Henry Catchpole drives Gordon Murray’s two, three-pedal, three-seat supercars back-to-back. Twin tests simply don’t get any better.

Differences, similarities, the journey to building an icon and a successor - everything is discussed in this in-depth review of the McLaren F1 and GMA T.50. It begins with a comparison of the engines, as they really are the heart of each car - the star turns. Both are naturally aspirated V12s and both sound incredible, but they are also quite distinct in character. Can Cosworth’s smaller, less torquey engine really live up to the legendary S70/2 created by Paul Rosche at BMW M? There are 12,400 reasons why it might…
We also look at the differences in design and how the luggage storage has changed from the F1 and why there is what looks like a big panel gap in the roof of the T.50. One of the big improvements that was inevitable but also required for the newer car was the fitment of better lights, so we thought we should drive the T.50 at night to prove they work. And it turns out the illumination is spectacular… at both ends of the car.
Perhaps the biggest GMA T.50 surprise, however, comes with the way its spine-tingling engine combines with the chassis. The F1 is not perfect in this regard because it is quite softly suspended and the steering requires a certain amount of muscle. It sometimes doesn’t feel light, even though it is. The T.50 on the other hand feels as lithe and responsive as you would expect for something that has a dry weight of just 997kg. And even better, it can be grabbed by the scruff of the neck and driven hard. It is genuinely fun as well as impressive.
McLaren F1, Gordon Murray Automotive T.50, Pagani Zonda, Ferrari F50, Porsche Carrera GT - which analogue supercar would you have? Let us know in the comments down below. We really hope you enjoy this epic film - if you do, then all we ask is that you give it a like, make sure you’re subscribed to the Hagerty UA-cam channel, share it with your friends and perhaps check out some of the other films from the back catalogue. Thank you.

I still can't quite believe this happened! Really hope you all enjoy it. Thank you to everyone involved in pulling it together. As ever a like, share or subscribe would be greatly appreciated if you have a moment.
Thank you Henry.
thank you once again Henry and the whole film crew. another banger of an episode
Given you spend a lot of time in the fastest cars on earth, your eyes said a whole lot during some of those bursts of acceleration.
The front ends actually really similar. Both are amazing g
Sound track in the beginning big lad? Love the video!
It was a pleasure to have you experience the T.50 Henry. You absolutely smashed it!
When's the next t.33 content coming out???
Thank you, GM, for trusting both cars to the right motoring journalist and production team in the world for this review. A true masterpiece in every way!
thx for making these cars!
The back of the t50 just isn’t right😬
@@CovKid2K10 yeah that was the deal breaker for me. I thought I found my next car to replace my 2004 Toyota Corolla, but rear end made me decide to keep my current car.
Thank you Hagerty
Thank you GMA
Thank you Henry
Thank you Gordon
For what? Are you going to buy it?
Thank you. Not just for bringing these two legends together, but for ensuring it was Henry Catchpole to do it. I know Top Gear have reviewed the T.50, as have others. But a direct comparison with the F1 is a moment of motoring history that, in my opinion, only Henry has the gravitas as well as the joy, to convey.
i think that Hagerty has one other regular who has the humour and history to make it a different class of video entertainment and has a racing legend to hand to really push these two cars.
This....
I’ve never clicked so fast in my life
We've already watched it 5 times and still couldn't click fast enough!
Same here!
@@ACommenterOnUA-cam So are you.
So are you ... WHAT ???
Care to translate what that was supposed to mean GenAlpha ??
Same here. Litteraly !
As someone lucky enough to work on the T50 project, i think the greatest worry was not really being able to deliver a modern interpretation of the F1, as the march of technology gives us enourmous capabilites today that simply didn't exist in the early 1990's, but a worry on how to find a good "balance" between building an amzing drivers car, and strangely, one that could actually be driven!
Take the rev capability of the engine for example, it can't run at too low an rpm or the crank snaps in two (which is why the start sequence is so "Long" btw ie the 3 sec mentioned in the film) and the engines ultra-low rotational inertia that enables the use of relatively small gearbox syncro components and hence rapid manual shifts that stay within managable physical limits and enable a high shift quality means a very very careful calibration for the torque control system (throttle and ignition etc) to allow the car to be driveable at all.
The fact the car is as driveable as it is, with its "small", compared to F1, capacity engine is testament to an enormous amount of effort and v. long days at GMA & Cosworth ;-)
I have a question - what happened to its weight? 997kg dry? It was supposed to be sub 1000kg with fluids.
Jealous of your work experience
@@Bug4lifedon't be that guy, just don't.
@@eugenux What's your problem? Am I not allowed to ask that question? Who are YOU to stop me?
I'm afraid this is not so much about the question as it is about the attitude.
Of course, this being the internet, the proper etiquette is usually to have no etiquette, but somehow on this video and especially to a comment like this it seems like replying with at least some semblance of reverence is needed for one's statement to be respected.
In other words, if you want your words to be heard and your questions answered, "don't be that guy".
(Hope this didn't come off as too condescending.)
My son CNCd the accelerator pedal....all the linkage behind it is made of the same billet of titanium and the grip milled on to the surface is a work of art 🎨
It's beautiful. Every bit as nice as any custom Titanium bike in the world
It fkng baffles my mind that a video like this is on the internet, free for everyone to watch. Thank you, Henry, Hagerty, and most importantly, Gordon.
Only a select few auto journalists could showcase and handle this situation properly, and Catchpole is absolutely one of them. This really is the definition of, “exclusive”, like you don’t just get to highlight and drive a McLaren F1 for 30 minutes on the regular, and then compare it side by side with its direct successor (Speedtail be damned).
This is a video that will most certainly be a piece of automotive history in years time, and I’m not being hyperbolic about that.
Also, it is crazy how the F1’s reign of fastest N/A road car has not been beaten. It is still very much the indisputable king.
If there's ever a car worthy of superseding the F1's record, it's the T.50. Of course GMA is in no rush to reveal any performance figures, so we'll have to wait and see, but there's no other car that's more deserving.
As a Bavarian i'm still proud that BMW build an amazing Engine for the McLaren F1
Also amazing Footage, Sound Design and i'm happy you got to experience this and shared it with us!
Prost & Cheers from Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps
@@aristosachaion_In Top Gear’s review they note that the T.50 does 226mph. Watch that video as well if you haven’t.

Kudos to whoever decided it was finally time to put one of the best in TWO of the best. Hats off to Hagerty, Gordon Murray, and Mr. Catchpole
There's never been any doubt that the F1 is still *the* standard for the greatest, purest super car. And the GMA T50 really is the only one to truly improve. Gordon Murray was definitely correct in his ideals, the man really is one of the all time great designers.
Beautifully said good Sir! Mr Catchpole is easily one of the greatest presenters ever... every time I see a video, old or new, with him in it, it's an instant click! And it's exactly the same thing with the F1 and the T50...but like you said, to have all 3 in one video, Hagerty you have outdone yourself!
YES 👍
Two masterpieces reviewed by a legend. Goosebumps.
This car looks like it was made yesterday. The body line is timeless.
The sound crew deserves a prize for this one !! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you... needed to go re-watch on my home theater to really let this sink in, Thank you!
Yes it’s incredible! While people might focus on the visuals, the sound is really what makes this piece come alive and immerse you. Thank you audio team!!
Hagerty needs to release a cut of the video with just engine sound and driving, no commentary or music!
I saw this posted during my lunch break, but I knew I should wait till I got home so I could listen with my HD 6XXs. Did not disappoint.
Mf just wanna flex his home theatre
Yes yes and yes!!!!!
12,400 RPM of V12 goodness. God bless Cosworth and Gordon Murray.
I wonder if they welded 3 hayabusa engines together to achieve this
@@johmsmith9496 having owned 3 busas(one a 400bhp turbo monster) I dream of taking it to 12400 rpm (10800 max) :)
How did cosworth enable the high rpms? Very tight tolerance and what kind of oil?
I had goosebumps watching this Henry, and I found it emotional to watch. Phenomenal video. Great work team and GMA.
Along time ago I was the person keeping the window cleaners employed at McLarens show room with my face pressed up against the glass every weekend, today I was transfixed in the same way watching this video. Thank you so much Henry, your words convey the sensation so perfectly, thank you Gordon for making two such wonderful cars that I wish that I could have either let alone both and thank you to the Hagerty Team for making and continuing to support such wonderful motoring journalism and entertainment. Now if you will excuse me, I am going to go and watch this again, and again…
I mean what!!!!!!! This got to be a contender for the best automotive video of 2024 no question
100% agreed
2024? I think that is the best of the decade
Absolutely 💯
Also best music video.
The fact that Henry is able to speak in the heat of a drive in that wailing masterpiece proves he's a class act. Bravo.
What an honor to watch this unfold. The look on your face while driving the T50 says it all. Best car ever.
It almost made me cry. I mean I grew up playing NFS 2 SE. that's where I started loving the Mclaren F1. Really happy to see that Gordon still tried to further make it perfect. For me and many others, The Mclaren F1 will be the perfect road car to ever exist.
How on earth after 30 years the F1 still look like that!!! Nothing can touch the beauty of an F1... it will get even better with time.
And the T50.... another legend is born
The carrera GT is more beautiful in my opinion 🤷♂️
It's not at all surprising that Henry was the first journalist to drive them both back to back. He's been putting out consistently great videos for years upon years and I'm so glad he got this chance. Incredible video, has definitely motivated me to start saving up pennies faster. That T.50 is not talked about enough for my liking so a 30 minute video on it is bliss
Agreed, I think this was the perfect review from the perfect presenter.
That Henry was a good day out...what a masterpiece
Wow wow wow. Henry this is one of the greatest car videos of all time. Felt like i was driving the thing. Fabulous!
I was at Milbrook last month and they briefly tested a T50. I can tell you that the audio on video does not do it justice. That's not a fault of this channel, just that it is not possible to capture the complete audio as you get in real life.
I'm so glad to hear this. It's a shame some noises don't come across better. I hope to hear in person one day .
I've heard the T50 in person as well, at Goodwood, it's glorious.
However the best example I've had of what you're saying is another McLaren - the MP4/5 F1 car. The percussion as it changed gear at full throttle was actually painful, from about 100yds away; maybe about 10% of the effect of the sound came through when I used to watch it on the telly! Being around these creations in person is another level.
@@louishall3700 the problem is, dynamics. In order to showcase the severity of the engine, everything else would have to be EQ'ed down many decibels, making Catchpole's calming voice inaudible. The scream of the engine would be deafening, by comparison.
Maybe some magic in the vibrations in the car?
short story: I remember being 13 years old and picking up an Evo magazine (I just checked, it was February 2015) with the P1 and F1 in a back-to-back review with Catchpole himself writing the article (edit: actually i think it was Richard Meaden who wrote the article and Henry who did the video review). The cover of what were 2 of my favourite cars of all time in the backdrop of southern France is something that's burned in my head and the article itself was something of poetic beauty. Catchpole truly was a journalistic genius (video guise as well)
9 years on, seeing what is basically the sequel to that, and that too on video? truly proves the man has still got it and none of that charm and elegance is gone. i love it!
Same F1 at that!
Was that the one which started with "We only broke the speed limit twice in the McLaren F1. On the first day for 8 hours and the second day for six..." or words to that effect? I remember reading that as a teenager as well. How lucky we are now to have UA-cam.
Both engines are engineering marvels for different reasons. They have been sent straight from the automotive heavens.
I have watched this a few times today, and I am even more confident this is the film of the decade!!
What a masterpiece by Henry Catchpole - he is firmly at the top of his game. Just brilliant!
I have been following the GMA T.50 from the beginning. So I am now over the moon to see the car now being put out to the press. WHAT A CAR! Well done to everyone involved at GMA!
Wow, the best automotive video ever created. The writing, the cinema theme, the style of filming and that blue exhaust fire shot. WOW! So great, it really does these two wonderful cars justice. Hats off.
Henry will be an automotive journalist for the books if he isn’t already. Always cracks a smile and a few tears out of us, in every video. He is a master of narration: As far as we are from driving those cars, it truly feels like we’re living it through his eyes, I can see the emotion in them as he speaks.
I had tears in my eyes watching this. Never has a car so pure been created for the pure pleasure of driving as the F1. Henry's reactions and breathless description really shows the emotional machine Gordon Murray created with the t.50. Most won't get to experience driving or ever even seeing one in person. Just knowing they exist gives hope for enthusiasts longing for the pure driving experience driven not by numbers, but sheer joy. Well done guys and thank you!
Henry reviewing the F1 in the analogue comparison, then the P1 comparison and now the T50 … it’s all really come full circle, what a wonderful adventure it’s been for Henry and us the viewers.
When extraordinary engineering meets extraordinary storytelling.
Well said!
My first job was in that building at Genesis Business Park in 1992. Walking past the hanging F1 car was a thrill. Seeing people like Gordon Murray turn up in the LCC Rocket, or even Peter Stevens in his Fiat 500 was a thrill.
Huge props to everyone involved in making this. I cannot imagine the mammoth effort and logistics that went into the process of getting those two cars together
Oh man the insurance for this video must've been eye watering... I have a visceral reaction of anxiety considering the consequences of a minor fender bender 😬
But what a privilege Mr. Catchpole, being able to bring these masterpieces together.
I’m sure Hagerty Insurance is well seeded to handle such a calamity
Amazing video. The incredible chance of a direct comparison. The visuals, the sound, the story, the different characters of the cars. The perfect road. Great driving. Fantastic.
What a pair of cars
What a presenter
What a video
Just wow
There are many fine 'content producers' in the 'automotive space' but this piece is genuinely the only one I've watched where - even vicariously - the hairs on the back of my own neck were in motion. Bravo...
Best. Day. Ever?
Thank you to all involved, especially the owners of these amazing cars.
The T50 reminded me of a motorbike more than once.
Just clicked to comment, gonna save this for a big TV and sound system. It's going to be so good🍿🙌
Ooooo... yeah. Good thinking! The sound is gonna blow you away.
Should have thought of that earlier
Yep, this is for the big screen
Same, can't be viewed on phone or laptop, full screen sell audio, will have to wait until this evening. Giddy!
Or headphones. Very expensive headphones.
Your old video F1 vs P1 in the south of France was a blast. This one is a perfect follow up. Great work. Cheers!
neah, automatic cars are for non-drivers, regardless of how wild they are when turning the wheel.
Sublime. I actually think the low-end to mid-range engine notes of the F1 are better, but then the high-revving wail of the T-50 is insane. I was lucky enough to see PP1 & 4 running and testing at UTAC Millbrook last month and the two standout impressions were how beautifully compact they looked and also, of course that noise.
Great video Henry. Eloquently described as ever. Zero waffle, maximum information and emotion.
Henry has to be one of the greatest. This film would not have been what it is without him, despite the outrageous cars.
The BMW M power S70/2 V12 is surely one of the greatest engines of all time, thank you for this amazing video
The actual ultimate driving machine
BMW
I went into this with high expectations. I adore the F1, the T.50 is perhaps the last truly analog supercar that will ever be, Gordon is a visionary and Henry is immensely enjoyable, so I felt my high expectations were justified. This 31 minutes was some of the best automotive content I have ever seen. Well done, all.
Great to finally have a test of the thing! Thank you!!
And now a group test: McLaren F1, Ferrari F50, Porsche Carrera GT, GMA T.50
McLaren F1 already had its group test with the Enzo and CGT. T.50 is just another level
My mind tells me there are faster and cheaper cars than the T.50, ones that I can actually afford.
My heart tells me that Henry has been behind the wheel of the greatest driving machine in history.
Speed not equivalent with smiles / miles. Also the light weight T.50 can be surprisingly fast for sure.
For the mind, Murray ment it to be a fun supercar
“Take a seat. Preferably the middle one.”
Who came up with that😂
The look of pure joy on Henry’s face says so much more than anything he said!
Henry, you have taken the honour and privilege of being able to drive the two greatest cars in the world back to back and shown the utmost respect. Your narrative and the cinematography have brought me as close as I will, probably, ever get to experiencing either car in motion in the flesh. Thank you.
As a Bavarian i'm still proud that BMW build an amazing Engine for the McLaren F1

Prost & Cheers from Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps
This might take the cake for my new favourite UA-cam video ever. Just the two greatest drivers cars of all time. Simply perfection.
Legit seeing the T50 and it's convertible counterpart in person T33 in Scotts valley at Gordon Murray Day is one of the most amazing days of my life.. hands down.
Video of the year already?
Thank you everyone involved. This is next level content and cars.
It's an uncommon privilege to SEE an F1 in person, which I am fortunate to have had. I can't image getting to DRIVE one.
or a few different ones on several occasions! What a life Catchpole has...
I used to see an F1 most days as Rowan Atkinson lived in my village years ago and he drove his often. Never got tired of seeing that.
I’ve only seen two of them. One was in London in 1996 in a window at the dealership, or that is what I remember. The other was at Road America many years ago, though that was one used for racing.
i saw 6 in the same place at Goodwood, insane experience
Would have been no later than ‘92; Sis driving Mum and me, navigating a busy Harlesden junction (by Jubilee Clock) in her Citroen Visa, when an F1 converges alongside. I jumped up and down with excitement, and was told to stop acting silly over a car. To which I then pointed out that, that car was over £1/2Mil….. they quickly got it, with Mum cautioning Sis ‘mind the man’s car’ 😁
That was in fact the best film I have watched on YT in years! I had goosebumps! Henry you said at the end you wish you could put us in that seat and for all realistic purposes you did just that. Can’t thank you enough.
For anyone interested, the stunning road is the AL-3102 between Bacares and Velefique in southern Spain, near Almería.
Hats off to all involved.
GMA, Hagerty, Mr. Catchpole, the film crew, editors, audio crew, everyone. Well bloody done!
In a matter of a few years Hagerty has become THE BEST automotive channel.
They got the right people on both sides of the pond. Only one missing maybe is potentially Chris Harris... maybe in time...
@@_queneah, Harris rarey has a good video lately...he has become a little of s caricature of his old self; I personally don't enjoy it, him now or his current videos; the last good video of his, in years if you ask me, was by far the gr86 one.
Good lord... this video gave me chills. Henry was thee perfect person for this comparison, and Gordon deserves some MASSIVE respect for what he's done with two absolute masterpieces. Bravo
2 of the best cars in the world, 1 great automotive journalist and you have heaven on your screens and in your ears, wow that T50 engine noise
Well this is automotive videography history in the making - and it’s Henry and I couldn’t be happier.
Ooof. The noise from the T.50. That engine is an absolute masterpiece.
This made my day
Ours, too!
I had a collection of T.50s fly past me near Silverstone a few months ago they're definitely a sight to see on the road and the sound even at a-road speeds was great
One of the best car UA-cam videos hands down , the narration and storytelling are amazing . Thank you Hagerty & Henry 👏
The flyby-sound from the T50 is INCREDIBLE!!!
We need a video of just pure driving and sound, no music, no commentary. PLEASE!
Up
We also need a drag race. I'm desperately wanting to see the T.50 vs F1. I mean, I'm also ok with T.50 vs anything.
Congratulations to Hagerty and especially to Henry. This is undoubtedly the McLaren F1 / GMA T50 equivalent of UA-cam car videos. Bravo to all involved.
This video is a work of art. A true tribute to the man who created these epic cars. The presenter is top notch and his face while behind the steering wheel is a perfect subtext to the script and the visuals. You say you wanted to put us behind the wheel, but you did! And the ending 😭😭😭. Wonderful 🙌
Oh wow Henry, that opening sequence of you in the cinema. Terrific delivery and powerful use of pauses !
Now Cammisa needs to do an Icons episode with the F1, the T.50, and the Valkyrie. Oh throw in maybe the T.33 as well for good measure
You know that he's got this video on repeat. Hi Jason!
T50s is competitor of Valkyrie not t50.

Incredible video, bravo to all involved! From the team at GMA, to Henry, to the production crew behind the scenes...you should be proud of the work you've done here.
The review I've been waiting for since Gordon Murray signed off the production cars! Henry and Tiff are the only two I was dying to see do this comparison!!
This video exemplifies why Hagerty is a company for car enthusiasts BY car enthusiasts.
It warms my heart to know that Harry grew up doing something he loved.
‘It’s a devilish sort of heaven” …. Awesome way to sum up.
That sound from the Cosworth V12 is spine tinglingly exciting.
Henry showing us once again that he has the very best job in the world. Every days a bucket list.
Simplicity and soul. There are so many super/hyper cars these days with insane numbers and incredible technology, but they are largely complicated and soulless. Murray is proving that, above all else, the joy of driving is still and will always be the most important thing.
It’s almost unbelievable that 30 years later, he has stuck wholeheartedly to his ethos, even doubling down, and the result is once again heralded as maybe the greatest drivers car of all time. Just think, he has developed 3 road cars in his career, and 2 are widely regarded some of the greatest ever. That’s something very few people have ever achieved in their chosen field of work.
Thank you Hagerty, awesome story and for allowing everyone to view these amazing cars 😍
An absolute masterpiece of a film for 2 masterpieces of automotive engineering. Well done Henry and Hagerty.
JESUS CHRIST!!! What a bloody incredible film. Thanks Henry, Gordon and everyone Involved. This is what people who love cars love to see. 👌
If you ever want proof that the time of TV channels dominating motoring content has passed, then this video is it. If a motoring journalist pitched a half hour programme dedicated to comparing just two vehicles they would have been told to restrict it to ten minutes because it had to fit in between a guest on a sofa and a tongue-in-cheek look at the week's news. But now enthusiasts can revel in unfettered content of the highest calibre, like this.
Henry always makes good videos. But, like both of the cars featured, this is a masterpiece!
I have been looking forward to this for years, the fact that its Henry is icing on the cake!
13:13 I love Henry’s glance at the camera. Like he doesn’t have words…
Wow! This is mind blowing, what fantastic sounds from those engines.
Thanks so much. 👍🏼
Both are spectacular. Love the Gordon Murray ethos. The fact that his personal collection involves many small light cars with not huge displacement is right up my alley.
Ultimately he is a car builder and by his DNA has to make more cars. In the builder world the question of success is sales. They are all sold therefore it is a success.
Will the new one be the ultimate super car of all time? I guess we have to wait.
This is quite literally the best automotive film/edit I have ever seen!! What a masterpiece
Gordon Murray is legend.
This is not just a video, it is an ART.
This show is absolute PERFECTION 👍😮
One of the best pieces of automotive jornalism ever produced.
Finally. I am not fortunate in this life to own a T50 or even drive one in my life but I will live vocariously through Gordons Design philosophy and your inspiring words. A big thank you for sharing your joy.
Wow Henry, just wow. I've been following you since the early days of EVO and this is beyond doubt your best work yet. What a film!
T.50 sounds MENTAL!
