The band started out as a solo project of lead guitarist/songwriter Tom Scholtz , he pretty much played and recorded most of the instrumentation in his self built basement studio and at M.I.T. where he was a student. After he got record company interest when they heard his demo's , other band members were auditioned and hired, however most of the demos ended up on the first album. Brad Delp provided lead vocals, sadly he died in 2007 committing suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning from burning disposable charcoal barbecues inside a sealed room. He had been suffering from depression.
The main riff from More than a feeling , was slightly reworked by Kurt Cobain for Nirvana's Smells like teen spirit.

John Francis yes sir!! It’s been said that lead guitarist Tom Schultz was the mastermind and SOLE musician that played EVERY instrument on the first album and produced it all then when it came time to tour concert is when he hired musicians to fill in onstage. The only thing lead singer did on the first album was add his iconic vocals , but everything else was Tom. This album goes down as my all time favorite album. So...You want to know the story behind this group, well, you have no idea. The story of Boston is pretty fascinating, if you ever get a chance to watch a documentary on it, give it a shot, they have a few on the internet. Short version, from Wikipedia, Tom Schotz came into the recording industry in an unusual way; as an MIT-trained engineer interested in music, he had designed his own recording studio in an apartment building basement to record his own music. The first Boston album was mostly recorded in this basement studio, often using devices he designed and invented himself.

    • @abovetheinfluence9361
      @abovetheinfluence9361  4 роки тому +9

That's one hell of a transition! From MIT to legendary recording artist.... wow! I wonder what spurred him in that direction. But whatever did we are grateful because it gave us incredible records. Gonna see if I can find a documentary! Thanks Allister!

@@2869may I had a similar experience. An old friend of mine called me from Houston and said, a studio by the name of "World Music Entertainment" had heard him sing and was giving him two free hours of studio time, to hear what his voice sounded like recorded. They didn't give him any further instructions or tell him what to sing, they just said "Be here in 7 days at 2:00 pm." He got permission to bring a guitar player and called me up after not keeping in touch for about 3.5 years.
I drove two hours to go meet him and discuss what we were going to do, then we sat in the park and started writing songs and by the end of the day, we settled on one song to focus on.
I went home and started working on arrangements while he worked on vocals. We just collaborated over the phone for a week, while I put together drum and guitar tracks. Once that was all together and all the arrangements had been agreed upon, I called a bass player to come over to record a bass track and the singer drove out for the vocal tracks and last minute tweeks.
When the day arrived, we dumped the drum and bass tracks into the engineer's computer for a backing track, then recorded new guitar and vocal tracks over that.
Once we finished, we got a couple of copies and left and didn't think too much about it. We were just excited to get to play in a professional studio.
The song was just done as a scratch track and was nowhere near a finished product, but the song was complete and except for my cheesy ass drum programming, it sounded pretty good.
The next day we got a call from the studio saying that the main office had been playing the song over the intercom all day and that Mathew Knowles, the owner of the studio and the father of Beyonce, had it forwarded to the headquarters in New York. We were blown away that anyone even paid any attention to it.
I believe it was 5 days from the day that we recorded it, that the studio called us again and said that New York had forwarded the song to Sanctuary Records in London and they had just called and said "We need a band photo and bio... like yesterday." What? We didn't even have a band or live near each other. I was on the phone immediately talking to old band mates and had a full band together in 8 hours. A few weeks later the singer moved back and we were writing songs like crazy.
We got the photo and the bio sent off, but nothing ever came of it. It sure was pretty exciting for a while though, especially since Sanctuary Records is the largest record label in the world with over 120 major acts, everyone from Slipknot, to Lynyrd Skynyrd, to Elton John.
We had a band again for a while and a few songs that briefly got played on local radio, but it didn't last too long before the singer was back into his old meth habits. It really got the best of him and it was probably for the best that the label didn't sign us.
      Sorry, that was so long.

I was only a little kid and I THINK one of my brothers had it on an 8 track!
Years later I saw them live at The Philadelphia Spectrum.
I made a banner out of a bedsheet and an airbrush. This is how I know that the "spaceships" are really upside down guitars, 'cause that is what I painted, quite well I might add.
Our local radio station would choose a banner and you could go backstage.
I wasn't allowed to sit with my banner...no standing in the aisles, so when they came to choose me...I didn't even know it until I was taking it down and the people sitting there told me. No pagers or phones back then. DEVASTATING!!
Anyway, it is still one of the most memorable concerts of my life...backstage passes or not.

Tom Sholz, the guitarist, was the lead engineer for Polaroid, and an MIT grad, so he was an engineer before he started recording the first Boston album. He invented a lot of the equipment he used to record the first album in his basement. He composed all the songs, recorded the guitars, bass, keys, organs, mixed, and mastered everything. In his basement. On Tape. He would chop up drum takes and tape them up the way he wanted them if it didn't sound right. No DAWs or anything like that. This was all in the 70s and 80s

Tom Scholtz played every instrument in the basement recording studio, then edited the songs to form them. He wrote the songs, and only hired a singer when he needed that part done to complete the album. Scholz also invented a few items to get sounds he wanted, and invented volume control for the monster speakers that were used in concerts. He invented the Blackbox on a chord that attached to the guitar to make lots of different sounds without having to push any pedals. Many guys started using these. He also invented the Polaroid camera, which became very popular with all kinds of people. When you took a photo, out would pop a photo that would develop in about five minutes while holding on to it.

At the time for me, the options were LPs and 8 Track cassettes. LP stereo in mom and dads house, or an 8 Track cassette player I had installed in my Ford Pinto that I had bought from the Mormon Church. (Yikes, I'll never make it through the Pearly Gates) Another band at the time that was best listened to at full blast was 38 Special. Song 1) Caught Up in You or 2) Hold on Loosely.

In terms of Guitar, Drums, and Vocals, this is the Best Song in Rock & Roll. I know that's saying a lot. It was perfectly constructed and is the perfect Rock and Roll song (IMO, of course).

There were only two members. The brainchild who wrote the lyrics and played the instruments including inventing (he was an engineer from MIT) his own sound things for the guitar (that are still in production today) Tom Scholz, and the singer Brad Delp. Scholz recorded everything in his basement for this album, which is their debut album BTW. There are other members but those two are the highlights
