Every song on Boston's debut album is at least as good as "More Than A Feeling". It's one of the rarest of rare albums where every song is legendary and there are no clunkers on it. Every song on Boston's debut album still gets played often on Classic Rock FM radio stations.

    • @wendymotogirl

I thought smokin' was kind of a clunker, and hitch a ride is the best song on the album followed by foreplay / long time. That's just my opinion.

    • @dalecronin4662
      @dalecronin4662 10 місяців тому +4

It is quite possibly the best debut album of any musical act ever. Not a clunker on the entire album.

    • @logstargo627

Most of that album is so good that arguing over what's the best is minutiae. I give it to More Than a Feeling but that album is so consistently awesome that there's no point in arguing over what's the best. It's so good as a whole that it's one of the few cases where "it's just an opinion" works in my book with no judgment. I put this stuff over Queen even though that seems to be considered heretical.
Also, to MMBxMOB: I'm amused by the fact that you straight-up called out that it's quite the move to name yourself after a major city and it's a little unbelievable that they not only represent but go beyond.

Tom Scholz was the genius behind Boston. He was an MIT graduate and he built a studio in his apartment and designed and built the effects that you hear on their records. Scholz played every instrument except drums on the album. He got Delp to sing and a drummer. What you’re hearing in this video is the studio version on top of the video. The other musicians were recruited so that they could play concerts.

Tom played all the instruments except drums in the studio. When signed by Epic, and the album become a rabid hit, they needed other musicians to play live, so they hired Barry (guitar) Fran (Bass) and Sib (Drums) to fill out the live band. Tom Scholz and Brad Delp were the only ones signed to record deal. Tom wrote and performed it all, except vocals , in which Brad did, including all backup, lead, and harmonies. Tom was a master wizard in the studio…

DJ - “When did you know that you had made it?”
Delp - “We had been on the road for a while, promoting the album, and we didn’t really know what had been happening. After a few months, I called my agent and said ‘I’ve been thinking of buying a house - can I do that?’, and he said ‘How many do you want?’ That’s when we knew.”

@twincams350 this is Boston urban legend BS. Tom does not play all of the instrument tracks on this record except drums nor did Tom write all the songs on this record. All of Brads vocals were recorded at Capital Studios Studio C in CA. Let Me Take You Home was recorded at The Record Plant LA by the band as pictured on the back of the record. Barry plays electric rhythm guitar on Foreplay, Long Time and Let Me Take You Home. Barry plays lead guitar on Long Time, and he plays lead and slide guitars on Let Me Take You Home. Fran plays bass on Foreplay and Brad plays 12 string acoustic guitar on Let Me Take You Home.
Producer John Boylan's interview in Mix Magazine is a good source. The legal documents for the law suits between Tom and Barry are a good source, and the liner notes from the 2006 Scholz remaster of the debut Boston record are good sources.

Numerous sources on the web, including wikipedia and an actual videotaped interview with Tom Sholz in his actual basement studio back up what I've written. Wikipedia is a well-vetted source, and includes references to corroborate everything in it. In cases where more sources are needed, they actually state that as a disclaimer (but no such disclaimer is given for their Boston entry).

Boston today is less a band and more a studio project that tours w/ session players, all directed by Tom Scholz (guitar)... Tragically, both original singer Brad Delp and drummer Sib Hashian (who played on the first 2 Boston albums) have passed away... Delp recorded a 3rd Boston album '3rd stage' in 1986 before leaving the band. He took his own life in 2007... Sib Hashian died in 2017.
Tom Scholz was a genius student at M.I.T. around 1969 when he started work on music, playing guitar and writing songs in his basement studio that he built in the early 70's. He worked w/ Brad Delp (vocals) who also played guitar and future Boston guitarist Barry Goudreau to record his music... Scholz played guitar, bass and keyboards... When he didn't get the sound he wanted, he used his engineering skills to make the sounds happen w/ the electronics. However, the music industry rejected the Boston demos in 1973.
In 1975, there was label interest, but Scholz did not have an actual band... So, he and Brad Delp got Sib Hashian (drums), Frank Sheehan (bass) and Barry Goudreau (guitar) to showcase the songs in a live setting and got a deal... Scholz insisted he finish the record in his studio and played most of the instruments on the first Boston album (Sib Hashian played drums and Brad Delp did lead vocals and some guitar).
In 1976, the debut album by Boston was released and became a massive hit on radio - it would sell 17 million copies in the US to date and became a classic record... the band went on tour and were a sensation.
With over 10 million copies of the first Boston album sold, the pressure was on to deliver a 2nd record, and the band delivered "Don't look back" in 1978... It was another hit and sold 3 million copies. However, Tom Scholz was unhappy w/ the record and felt it sold less because it was "rushed"... He insisted on taking his time for the next Boston album.
Years passed and Boston were still in limbo... Goudreau, Hashian and Sheehan ended up quitting the band as Scholz switched labels and finally delivered the album '3rd stage' in 1986... it sold another 3 million copies, and Boston toured w/ new members...
Brad Delp ended up leaving the band for personal reasons by 1990. Boston was also involved in a lawsuit w/ their former label in the 80's that was resolved by 1990 in Scholz's favor.
Scholz recruited new musicians and singers for the 'Walk on' album in 1994, but even w/ Brad Delp contributing some vocals to the record, it was a commercial disappointment... Tom Scholz carried on recording new Boston albums w/ various musicians, released years apart (the next album 'Corporate America' came out in 2002)... There was talk about Brad Delp rejoining Boston (he would perform w/ them on tour from time to time) but he ended up committing suicide in 2007.

Scholz wrote every song on the first album all by himself. He also played every instrument of every song on the album, the only exception is the drums, which the record company made him redo. He also built his entire studio by himself, including inventing new audio processing equipment which he sold as a guitar pedal for decades. When the album hit the charts, there was no Chicago, just Scholz and Delp, they needed to hire a band before they could tour.

The other guys you see were just brought in to perform live. Tom is the one who wrote and orchestrated the first album in his home studio. He is an MIT engineering graduate specializing in electronics. He built his own effects gear including The Rockman, a guitar amp simulator resembling a Walkman. He founded Scholz Research and Development to built it and other electronic gear. He basically is Boston. He just couldn't sing and play drums the way he envisioned his music to sound. Without his genius there would be no Boston.

I came here just to see your reaction to Brad Delps vocals, in particular his high notes.
    Was not disappointed.
Your reaction was 1000% the proper reaction on a 1st time listen and it never gets old 30 years later.
His voice BLENDS PERFECTLY with the guitars where you can't tell if it's him or the guitar!
Check out *RICK BEATO* channel review of this song, he singles out the TRACKS and you can hear how PURE and PERFECT Brad's voice is.
As good as MANY other vocalists are I've never heard them match an instrument like Delp does.

Back when you reacted to Journey, you asked the MOB who else in Rock had a great voice? I suggested Boston. Some of the best rock vocals ever. Really nice drums too, love the triple-crash cymbals in the middle, and again near the end. This is a great all around band. "More Than A Feeling" is my favorite of their songs. Boston has a lot of other great songs. "Foreplay/Longtime" comes to mind. Also "Peace Of Mind". Boston is a great example of mid-70's "Semi-Progressive Rock", music that's skillful, intelligent, excessible, and popular.

@joeheffernan5268 False. Tom did not play all of the instrument tracks on this record. Tom did not play a single drum track on this record and the record is so much better for that fact. Sib plays drums on all of the tracks except one. Barry plays guitar on three tracks. Fran plays bass on two tracks and Brad plays acoustic 12 string guitar on one track. The band as you seen them on the back of this record recorded the Song Let Me Take You Home before this record was finished and then released.

The other original guys in the band were Barry Goodreau (rhythm & lead guitars) Fran Sheehan (Bass Guitar) Tom Sholtz formed the band and invented & built his own guitar foot pedals, giving Boston a guitar sound that was truly original. Tom was an M.I.T. grad and was responsible for they're unique sound. If you look at the album cover quickly, it looks like a spaceship. Look Closer, It is an upside down guitar with the Boston skyline under the dome on top. Keep listening to their music, you'll never hear another band that sounds like them. From the original, proprietary guitar sound to the otherworldly vocals of them late great Brad Delp, they were truly unique. Also, when you think of how many albums were sold, think of when it was released (1976), much smaller population in the world then, compared to now. Also, there wasn't any social media or computers to promote your music, just hearing it on the radio and going to your local record store to buy it, (there was no "on line" back then).

Tom Scholtz (tall, skinny guitarist in the video) played and recorded all of this except vocals and drums himself in his basement studio over five years. Much of it on equipment he invented himself to get just the right sound.
Brought in drummer Sib Hashian and singer Brad Delp to complete it. Released the record which took off immediately. Brought in second guitar and bass player so they could tour-why you see five guys playing live but only three credited on the studio recording.

I was 16 when my girlfriend bought me the Boston album. Slammed it on the turntable and cranked it up. First track - More Than A Feeling, followed by Peace of Mind then the epic Foreplay/Long Time. Blew. My. Freaking. Mind. (And still does). I must have played that trio of songs at least a dozen times before my mother cracked it and shut me down for the night. That first hearing of this amazing album is etched deep into my DNA. Glad to see people still having the same reaction nearly 5 decades later!

Brian May is known for being an astrophysicist, Tom Scholz is also highly educated in the scientific world. He designed guitar amplifiers that can make so many interesting guitar sounds that many other guitar players use it. One of the features is being able to sustain a note or chord forever. I remembered that when at the end you said, legend has it, they're still holding that note.
Music producer and musician Rick Beato made a video where he picks apart every track on this song in his What Makes This Song Great series.
