I'm from the NYC area and when he was first coming onto the scene as a politician my friends, family, and I were shocked. We were like, "Wait, you mean the guy with the failed casinos in Atlantic City who says 'you're fired' on TV? *He's* a savvy businessman?" It was news to us. And the anecdotal idea we tossed around was that the rest of the country must have believed the TV show, whereas people who are from where he's from know the truth about his shady (and shitty) business dealings. Interesting to hear this coming up again now. Thanks, Maggie.

Good point and that's what's maddening to me, folks from New York have known what a con man and fraud Trump is for many years so the rest of the country should have taken notice when they voted overwhelmingly AGAINST Trump in 2016 (and 2020!) Unfortunately millions of people in this country are so gullible and poorly educated that they can't discern truth from lies

This a good review and summaries He backs up his conclusions with 40 years of research by his writing partner, psychology professor Bob Altemeyer, and the survey they conducted on the psychological make-up of President Trump's base.
      Among their conclusions:
President Trump is an authoritarian leader.
Authoritarianism is deeply embedded in America today.
Trump's base is compromised of personality types that include social dominators, authoritarian followers, as well as "double highs" who combine the worst traits of the two.
Prejudice is the glue that holds this coalition together.
Religious beliefs are not really that important to those who identify as religious fundamentalist or evangelical; not compared with the power that fear and prejudice have over them.
Dean spends the first four chapters analyzing Donald Trump, leading to his label of authoritarian, or as stated on page 24, "a wannabe dictator conspicuously displaying his inchoate authoritarian rule." As you can tell, the book minces no words. When asked about the concern of analyzing a public figure from afar, Dean gave the kind of context that only someone in the inner circle of Presidential politics for so many decades could provide:
"We [in the book] relied very, very much on available evidence and overwhelming conclusions by clinical and other psychologists about, for example, the influence of parents on their children," Dean says.
"But to analyze somebody from afar, psychology and psychiatry have the Goldwater Rule, with which I’m very familiar; I’ve had long conversations with Senator Goldwater about it," Dean continues, stating that he'd known Barry Goldwater since he was 13 years old. "I’m very familiar with the lawsuit from which that emanated, and it has always been striking to me how the psychological and psychiatric associations misinterpreted the rule. What the abuse was, what Ginzburg, the editor of Fact magazine, did in polling psychiatrists, many of whom did make very legitimate analysis-even the Senator said, 'Right on'-but what [Ginzburg] did is he went through and selectively took information from his polling and his solicitations from these people, and he skewed it and he came up with a distorted result."
"The Goldwater Rule said these people shouldn’t even be making the analysis… well, I think they can make an analysis from a distance and if somebody walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, he’s probably a duck."
It was Goldwater's public brawl with Jerry Falwell, Sr. and his Mor

The lede refers to his massive ambition and subtle implication of success and achievement (Trump Tower).
The copy paints a sympathetic picture of "poor Donald" isolated and not in the best of spirits. It references a personal phone call Donald made to Maggie without her admitting he made it.
The piece closes on Donald Trump emerging like a rock star.

LOL, Trump Is Still the Democrats' Daddy. Donald Trump isn’t merely living rent-free in Democrats’ heads, he’s building condos there and having the time of his life.
The Dems haven’t been able to enjoy one single moment of their “victory” in the 2020 election because Trump is still out there, smiling, and teasing a run in 2024. They wake up thinking about him. They retire to their beds of shame, thinking about him at the end of every day.
The House Soviet Select Committee on Daddy Issues, also known as the J6 Committee, exists solely to make up reasons to keep Trump from running for president again because they know that they have no one who can beat him in a fair fight and without a generous assist from a pandemic. Monkeypox to the rescue.

Her reporting is on point, with years of research into what he really is and what made Donald Trump. It's a deconstruction of his character. This is the book he should fear because leaves him completely exposed.

I had honestly never heard of him but I am sure that if I had suggested to any New Yorker that Donnie would one day be president, I would have gotten the bigliest laugh. PS The Ride is a gem of a NYC experience.

When Stephen Colbert was on Comedy Central, my daughter told me that his show and _The Daily Show_ were her news sources. I told her that both shows were even funnier if you actually read/watched the news. Same for the opening monologue on his show and most late night shows.
