I'm from the NYC area and when he was first coming onto the scene as a politician my friends, family, and I were shocked. We were like, "Wait, you mean the guy with the failed casinos in Atlantic City who says 'you're fired' on TV? *He's* a savvy businessman?" It was news to us. And the anecdotal idea we tossed around was that the rest of the country must have believed the TV show, whereas people who are from where he's from know the truth about his shady (and shitty) business dealings. Interesting to hear this coming up again now. Thanks, Maggie.
Good point and that's what's maddening to me, folks from New York have known what a con man and fraud Trump is for many years so the rest of the country should have taken notice when they voted overwhelmingly AGAINST Trump in 2016 (and 2020!) The most disturbing thing to me is that there are people who watched the apprentice and thought highly of him. I still can't wrap head around it.

I am not sure why the media spent so much time about Trump back in the 80s and 90s. I saw saw him briefly on The Oprah show with Ivana, and said “who is he, why does anyone care and what an idiot”. Yet, the media continued, even in the Midwest.

True to Maggie Haberman's point, I watched a documentary on undecided voters watching TV, and many felt Donald on the Apprentice was him in real life; that he was a wise consultant and rich billionaire success story. The power of propaganda should not be underestimated.
He edited the show to only portray his super intellgence, and basically everything he doesn't posess, like intelligence, a sense of a savvy businessman, any skill whatsoever, integrity, and anything resembling a reasonable, balanced human being.

About the only thing he's good at is con artistry and grift, and I've heard that the apprentice was a big money maker for him on top of creating this myth image of him as the 'big man in the office'. I stopped watching television in 2008. I glean in elapsed time things I want to see online, without a paid service for TV. I can usually find things on UA-cam, CSpan, and multiple other websites. I hated the commercials, the political ads, the reality TV that was a joke. I missed all of the Apprentice shows and I'm so glad I did. It made me a better person.

Stand up comedy in a live improvisation troup. Everyone knew the beginning and the end of the arc, but had to listen to each other and the audience response, while keeping on track. Comedy is hard work.

Showing her humanity by going on news and talk shows for weeks after sharing none of this for literally half a decade while the American rule of law crumbled- I especially love the quote “at this point we can’t ignore him.” It’s refreshing to find a ‘journalist’ who waited 6 years to tell many of those stories now telling us we can’t ignore him.

We individually may not have the right to see them, but our elected leaders who replace him certainly do in order for continuity of government. @@Swan-rb4yg she’s a reporter for The NY Times, who has covered him extensively since 2012. Large portions of the book are based on her previous reporting.
You can't ignore him perhaps, but you can dismiss him by noting what he says/does and then pivoting to someone who is providing solutions and report on that instead. Amplify the good you want to see in the world.

Please don't buy the book, Habberman deliberately kept this information from the public when she first became aware of it to maximise her profits from a book deal, this encourages that sort of bad behaviour. We should know about Trumps insanity the moment anyone becomes aware, not years later when it's too late to do anything about it because some journo wanted to get more money
If you follow her you'd be aware that she has been reporting extensively on him for years. Presumably, it was the continuation of her investigations that took time. She's not one of those who sits on important information.

I worked for a guy who was an Apprentice fan, and he refered to "The Donald" several times. And on at least three seperate occasions he fired me on the spot for whatever reason. Now I clearly see what was going on.
I never watched the apprentice. I don't see the appeal on giving a narcissist and confidence anymore more attention than they deserve. He comes across as a fraud and a failure, his dishonor will remain.

As a fan of The Apprentice, I thought trump would make a good potus. But when I watched him in the debates with the other republicans, I was shocked at what an azz he was. Then watching his interviews, seeing footage of him mocking a disabled reporter and hearing how he routinely ripped off his subcontractors made me realize that he would make a terrible potus. I was correct.
So, seeing him be an a** on the Apprentice didn't give you enough clues? I'm glad you saw the light, though. 👍

I happened to be a college kid in New York when SPY magazine first began to print, when Graydon Carter first called Trump a *short-fingered vulgarian.* Watched people read that mag on the subway and burst out laughing, then read it to strangers. Nobody in New York was impressed by Trump in those days. He was the city's joke.

The piece titled "Inside Trump Tower, an Increasingly Upset and Alone Donald Trump" portrayed Trump in a sympathetic light. It is still online.
The lede refers to his massive ambition and subtle implication of success and achievement (Trump Tower).
The copy paints a sympathetic picture of "poor Donald" isolated and not in the best of spirits. It references a personal phone call Donald made to Maggie without her admitting he made it.
The piece closes on Donald Trump emerging like a rock star.
Remember - this was days after Donald Trump was caught on tape bragging about sexual abuse.
And this was the Haberman treatment.
It's extremely disappointing seeing her on national TV getting a pass over and over again.

Everyone saw those creepy videos with Epstein and the inappropriate pics with his own daughter. Everyone knew about his racism. I think the media (like the rest of the sane world) were amazed at the blind support and didn't believe people would actually vote him in. And most didn't....he lost the popular vote. The Republicans knew what he was and capitalized on his popularity with their base ,all in their quest for power.

I remember being young delivering newspapers. I eventually got into reading more than the comics section. On page 2 there was always an article on Trump doing one thing or another shady. Not paying contractors or lawyers... some things never change.

I rarely watch TV. If I do it’s documentaries, PBS, something educational. I cannot imagine watching something like The Apprentice in the first place. But to go way over the top further and view it as real is insanity! Which MAGA is in a nutshell.
I could see this book already made into a mini-series on Netflix/HBO/Showtime, what have you "Donald Trump - Monster: The Origins of a Con-Man" 500 Pages book -We know for sure Trump will never read this book. Her reporting is on point, with years of research into what he really is and what made Donald Trump. It's a deconstruction of his character. This is the book he should fear because leaves him completely exposed.
Gather all the books about him, you’ll get every dirty detail! But I’m not condoning buying those books! Some don’t deserve their kickbacks!

I’ve been listening to the audio version of her book and it’s amazing .
First time I went to NYC, I went on a tourist activity called The Ride and the two comedic guides mercilessly lampooned Donnie. I had honestly never heard of him but I am sure that if I had suggested to any New Yorker that Donnie would one day be president, I would have gotten the bigliest laugh. PS The Ride is a gem of a NYC experience.
The title of the book got him to say TFG's name, for the first time in years.

Per THE APPRENTICE, a general observation: tv viewers who don't follow the issues, who have mediocre education, are the surest fodder for deceptive image building and selling lies.
When Stephen Colbert was on Comedy Central, my daughter told me that his show and _The Daily Show_ were her news sources. I told her that both shows were even funnier if you actually read/watched the news. Same for the opening monologue on his show and most late night shows.
