- Immigration is an issue for every world leader, and President Donald Trump was no exception. Trump campaigned on overt hostility towards migrants. To explain what motivated the former president, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Maggie Haberman chronicles Trump's life in her new book "Confidence Man." She joins Walter Isaacson to discuss Trump's rise and post-presidential life.

I'm surprised the bible didn't instantly burst into flames when he held it.
😂😅😊😂😂
Same reason all church steeples require lightning rods.
He is a christian in training.
@@dorisaffissio1649 Really, based on what?
Not the Bible, Trump hands should start to burn and burst into flame.
Donald held that Bible like a vampire handling a bottle of holy water.
I also thought Trump was the antichrist... but then I realized that everything he said was true. You can just grab em by the pussy and they love it (assuming you do it with confidence) 🤷♂️
If you understand that he’s a malignant narcissist, everything he does makes complete sense…
Because of Trump I have come to learn what a narcissist is, their attributes, and what their behaviors are like and I was able to finally label someone I've known for decades as a narcissist. From my research on narcissism because of Trump I was able to determine that my friend is a covert narcissist whereas Trump is an overt narcissist (who is much easier to spot). At about 16:40 where Haberman had said that Trump was ultimately made it about himself is correct about the narcissist. My narcissist friend did that to me at one time when I said I wasn't feeling well and I wasn't going to be able to make it to the lunch that friends had invited us to and my friends response was "Hey come on, I told them you were coming". Wow, there was no empathy and it turn out to be about them!
Yup, the expected response was something like "Ok, I'll tell them. Hope you feel better soon".
@@enufots4621 agreed. I didn't really understand someone in my life until 45, but now the diagnosis is crystal clear. What I have found works there, and what I don't understand why the press cannot understand, is the way to deal with narcissists is to ignore them. The media is to blame for the 45 phenomenon as much as or more than anything else in our society. Stop covering him, and every little thing he does.
@@enufots4621 same- I’ve diagnosed many people through watching 🎃. Including my mother, who is a vulnerable narcissist… so many things make sense now!

My ex said he would die if I left him.
He's still alive.
Another lie.

I hope that young people hear Maggie Haberman (and Christiane Amanpour!) and realize that journalism isn't just important but VITAL to a free and fair democracy.
Agree ... Amanpour and Company does some of the very best interviews and stories anywhere. Haberman is an excellent example of many that the show does.

I've been saying the same thing all along!
New Yorkers have always known he was a snake oil salesman. A very dangerous snake oil salesmen.

I know right.
Maggie Haberman is very articulate. She is analytical and concise. Her historical perspective of Trump over the years adds so much depth to her descriptions. This is probably the only Trump book that I will read.
she is good. i have never desired to read any books about him but her interviews have changed my mind
His niece Mary's book explains the whys of his psyche.
Maggie is “access journalism”. Trump gives her access, as long as she stays inside the agreed upon bounds of her criticism. She ran the story that blamed Stephanie Winston Wolkoff for the inauguration spending and provided cover for the Trump family grifting.
Gosh I love anything Walter Isaacson touches
Agree. I recently read his book, “The Code Breaker”. Excellent read.
One of the great journalists of our time - can’t wait to read this book
Good interview.
Hope the book changes the minds of people unfamiliar with narcissism or who do not believe in such so-called "mumble-jumble". The man likely has narcissistic personality disorder and some experts have said it is worse since they believe him to be a "malignant" narcissist or even a sociopath.
The behaviors mentioned here all jive with narcissistic personality disorder - egocentrism, habitual lying, relationships with other people being purely transactional as they are only there for his use, no loyalty to anyone and will throw anyone (incl his own kids) under the bus, parrots what others say since he lacks moral character or any "north star" to establish opinions of his own (unless for his own benefit).
Sure, that means he is also a deeply insecure person, but he is also one sick and dangerous SOB. As his niece says, do not underestimate the depths to which he will sink for his own benefit. Or to save his hide.
Succinct sumup. For this, and all narcissists, we are only here to serve them.
Hallelujah! At last someone who knows. I've been trying to get this across for ages. Kudos for the excellent post.
@@spindriftbeach6082 I unfortunately know a few people pretty high imho on the narc spectrum (altho luckily not as extreme as Trump). I think it's hard to understand in part because of its low occurrence in the population, ya don't come across one of him every day. FWIW I also think there's maybe some sort of evolutionary self-protection thing going on; we maybe inherently just don't want to believe that human beings can be like this.

One of his instances of being a sophisticated parrot: his statement that “I love the uneducated”. It’s clear that he was told behind the scenes, that the poor and uneducated would be an easy target to manipulate with his rhetoric. He then made this into his famous phrase. I can just imagine Bannon rolling his eyes, thinking the statement would anger his followers, but no. They loved it.
This woman is huge. Hats down to Maggie Haberman.
I’m always reminded of Trump’S comment in 2020 that he wouldn’t agree to the peaceful transfer of power.
To think this guy is still a mainstay in the political verse is just nuts, then add that it's mostly evangelicals responsible for voting him in....

@@markvictor8776 True, alas. The cynicism and nihilism of Trump supporters is breathtaking, but I think a lot of evangelicals are actually that cynical and nihilistic as well. This would help explain certain religious trends in the country.
The ugly Truth about Evangelicalism you mention is certainly a major part of his political "longevity" but the immorality and corruption in the GOP has also played a major role. I like watching true crime. It fascinates me and I’m not exactly sure why. I think it has to do with my complete disbelief what people will do for gain. In the same way I’m fascinated by Trump. It seem obvious he is an egomaniac and as deep as a puddle but I can’t help but watch.
He’s just unbelievable, just unbelievable! You’ve never met or seen anyone like him, so utterly depraved, so absolutely devoid of shame or guilt, and so completely unable to repent or suffer from remorse. Just evil personified! Everything evil, uncouth, immoral, vengeful, wicked, unsalvageable, it’s indeed fascinating that a human being can be so deeply and utterly hollow and soulless.
@@oliviaturner7388 IKR. Why can’t his hateful followers see through the facade? I guess they think they got something to gain.
@@oliviaturner7388 Actually, it's called narcissism. It's really good to understand what a narcissist personality is like as often they are in leading roles. They are master manipulators, in leading roles, backstabber behind your back, etc. They can be waging a war against you covertly without you having done anything wrong. It could be something as simple as you simply being a better athlete, smarter, more likeable person, etc. Narcissists need to be the top dog and to be look up upon and if you steal their thunder (even unintentionally) they will sabotage you. They are indeed a nightmare to have to deal with. Watch for them in your relationships and even family members.
My fascination with tRumptypes is their audacity to think they can get away with their scams now in this age of intense media surveillance. When the news located Reagan's lower intestine cancer on a Reagan silhouette,

Maggie Haberman is a fantastic journalist. The book is great.
When Trump came down that elevator in 2015 it was like the devil getting through the door.
Evangelicals voted for him, since they are big believers in the devil.
When he came down the escalator, his arrogance and pomposity was overwhelming!
Thank you Maggie for being truthful.
Trump has caused so much irreparable harm to this country. We knew it. Thats why we cried when he won. Now here we are, still dealing with his insanity.
Over 250 people close (or fairly close) to the President were interviewed- that quite a bit of work!!
Also, from what I've hear kinda recently (not just this interview) sounds like Fred Trump was a really cool guy.
I would loveto see an interview between Haberman and Mary Trump!
Haberman is very competent as a reporter and a writer. And her words carry insight & influence. It would be beneficial to our country for her (& others) to stop saying "He has to run in 2024...he has no choice." That in my view further encourages such a twisted possibility.
Maggie is fabulous. We really are living through terrible times with that fool.
Says a lot about our society. We allow Donald Trump's bullying to have his way with people in high positions to gain undeserved power. If he came from a fascist background, he learned it well.
Yeah it's about the power and greed with these people, only way We The People will have a functional government in it's proper form is to vote these people out of office and our lives, Trump and these self serving Republican senators are trying to hold the country hostage.
I can’t stand what trump has done to the republicans . I really can’t understand his followers 😢
The followers are normal.
The Christian gets waved through when publicly insulting intelligence with notions progress is made with one foot in fantasyland. God help us they get elected. We have video of Trump, violently getting a photo of himself holding up a bible in front of a church.
They don't have a clear understanding of themselves. A _Punk Financial Times_ piece put it best, " If Donald Trump is the answer, what in hell is the question?". This was _before_ the 2016 election on UA-cam and I've never heard an answer from Trump or his supporters, certainly none that made any sense. In 2016 I called into a radio talk show and complained about a lack ideological coherence from Trump and his supporters, also before the 2016 election.

One issue I have with her regardless on how she explains it away. . She had so much information that should have been reported in her paper in real time but she as others held on to the information for her book for only one reason $$$$ maybe a better investigative journalist but motivation but her with all those book writers with 1st hand knowledge were willing to see the breakdown of our democratic system for personal gain.
I have a crush on Maggie Haberman. Brains and beauty. Irresistible.
Unfortunately the people who need to read the book, will not.
Imagine knowing all this and staying silent just so you can make a buck.
This is what they all do with him. It's sick actually. They come close to acting like him. She's good and has the interviews but held stories back for the book.
Yes they all have the same agenda, they stood by and allowed a malignant sociopath to control this country to sell books, somewhere in Haberman career as a journalist she took a detour, causing her to lose sight of what real reporting was intended to be, just as so many others like her who refuse to hold these useless politicians accountable.
None of the thousands of things we knew about Trump convinced Republicans to impeach him. But sure, Maggie Haberman is to blame.
The people I'm disgusted with are those who worked with him and wrote about it after, instead of doing something when they could have. MH is a journalist, not someone who worked in the Whitehouse.
I wonder sometimes how the US became so powerful when so many of its people are as dumb as a box of rocks! This is her profession. The book is part of her profession. The timing of her book is her decision.
