  • In today's episode, I take you with me to the Shenandoah Valley Fiber Festival recently held in Berryville, VA for a tour of all the beautiful yarn, wool, fiber and related goodies on display. We'll also spend some time with angora goats and alpacas. Of course, I'll also share my recent finished objects and works in progress.

Nice to see all the beautiful yarn from the festival. Over here in Scotland it is now sweater weather. I use dpns for socks & don’t feel too precious about washing them. Look forward to seeing your new journey. Thank you

You picked up some awesome yarn at the festival. I look forward to seeing what you make. I can't use those tiny circular needles for socks , my hands cramp up too. I prefer my traditional dpns. I throw my wool socks in the washer and dryer, I just can't be bothered. The super wash wool is fine. I have re-used yarn from abandoned projects many times. I find that they do just fine. Enjoy your travels, I can't wait to see where you go. Thanks for the video.

I agree - if I didn’t wash and dry my socks with the machines, I’d never wear them! Thanks so much for your note, Carin!

Thank you for a great episode. The yarn festival was very enticing and the yarns and fibres you bought are so gorgeous. The Avalon merino/silk yarns and the suri alpaca/silk/cashmere yarns look wonderful. I love Suri alpaca yarn it has such a lovely sheen to it. I knit socks with superwash merino, no nylon, and they usually go in the washing machine. If I remember, I take them out before the load goes into the dryer but I often forget. So my socks regularly go through the dryer and superwash means they can be machine washed. They have got a little smaller over time but I too am a loose knitter and I have small feet so the socks often start off a bit loose. I am still able to wear them no problems. I love the colours of the hat, I have always liked mauve and mustardy colours together and the jumper will be gorgeous. I have a lot of wool tops left over from felting, which I no longer do, and I am going to try spinning it with a drop spindle just to see how I get on with it. I am so impressed that you have spun wool and knitted with it. Inspiring. Thank you for sharing. xoxo

I am glad you enjoyed the episode, Margaret! And a winter of washing and drying my hand knit wool socks has left them just fine - in fact, I’m kinda liking the fabric even better!

Concerning yarn, is there a difference between the terms ‘color’ and ‘colorway’?

Hi Carolyn - that’s a really good question! In yarn terms, I think of ‘color’ as the innate hue of the yarn - so, when you look at the yarn, you see blue, green, orange, yellow, pink and so on. I think of ‘colorway’ in two ways - first, the name the fiber dyer has given to the yarn. So for example, a yarn brand or dyer might decide that their dk weight yarn dyed in a hot pink shade be called ‘flamingo.’ I’ve also heard how a combinations of colors of yarn can also be called a colorway - so a designer might put together a collection of yarns that are all cool tones, a lavender, violet and navy, say and call it their ‘night’ colorway or put together a cream, khaki and light orange and call it a ‘desert’ colorway. But I’m glad you brought that up because, I think that Knitting UA-cam, in general, uses the term colorway fairly loosely and I could see how it could be confusing!
