I’m so grateful that you guys introduced me to farm match. Going to have to see if I can get some of the things I can’t make or raise myself. Forget all those with negative opinions! Those of us looking for were to get these types of products are very happy that you are showing the way.
There are different things you can try its best if the sheep can be in a dry place until the foot heals. Kopertox can be applied to the hoof first then pack a mixture of sugar and betadine inside the toes and bottom of the hoof. Put cotton between the toes and bottom of hoof then bandage with a wrap then place masking tape on the bottom and around as and added way to keep the hoof dry. Copper sulfate powder in another treatment option but some say it irritates the hoof sometimes. Flystrike is dangerous as fly larvae release toxins which can put an animal into shock or even death. Always keep an eye on pets in the warmer months especially older ones.
I had a steer that got tangled up in fence overnight and its leg swelled up and rotted. I just let the maggots clean the wound out and he eventually heal later on with some disinfectant and ointment
@@lilymead5457 That's not true I have seen them be very transparent about their animals needing veterinary care. The fact they are even showing what they did today tells you they are not afraid to show the reality and that sometimes includes 'failing.' If they wanted to hide it you wouldn't see anything at all. I believe they will call a professional if they can not figure it out themselves but sometimes it just happens and it takes time to fix.
Why dont you make permanent paddocks on either side with an alley way down the middle. Just have your animals cross the isle and they are on fresh pasture. Seems this fencing you use takes alot of time to move them. You can still rotate but so much easier.
Then you have to maintain way more fence at a higher cost. He can use the same fence for unlimited acres. A permanent fence for their entire farm would be a big investment up front and then like I said you need to maintain the entire thing and check and fix it ahead of every move, otherwise you are just letting your animals out. Also they can use the portable fences anywhere, like right around the house or their pond where you would not want a permanent fence. And the electric fence keeps predators out as well as your animals in. A coyote will dig under a permanent fence but not the electrified stuff.
@@Chief667they plan to stay on this farm forever as well as pass it onto their children so permanent fencing would be a wise investment, of course it would have been wiser to have started many years ago. As you know the expense cannot possibly be a concern for this particular family, if so in a few years the boys will be big enough to put it in themselves. Their temporary fencing really seems ridiculous, but it does probably does make for interesting content:)
@@Chief667 I would differ. Regular electric fence, maybe 2-3 strands, would cost much less than that mesh stuff, and still be fairly moveable. Also, it carries current much better. Ask me how I know...
Very high maintenance the electric movable fencing. The whole farm seems like high maintenance to me. Way more than it should be. Do you think the children will really want to continue with the farming on this land?
One thing about maggots is that -despite being gross- they will not eat healthy flesh. They will only feed on dead or dying flesh. In fact, maggots are still used in medical treatments on humans currently, though it is not well-known. -Dusty
Wow..gotta toughen up to handle all that..or pay the price for somebody else to deal with all that..weigh it out..proud of y'all tough people..ty..xoxo blessings to y'all in every way ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Any broken windows from the hail storm? That looked kind of scary moving the chickens with the lightning going! Nice farmer's package of goodies! It looks worth it. Great that you got to treat the feet of the lame lambs. Thanks for this video Rhodes family!
Wonder how many hours you spend on moving those fences. I watch videos of sheep herders in Europe and and their dogs just move their sheep with ease to a different grazing pasture. If the sheep need attending to, its a very calm gathering and they calmly lay them down. No chasing or grabbing them like you do. They know how to handle them.
On smaller acreage it helps to concentrate the animals on small areas at a time. Improves soil quality and foliage. All part of regenerative practices. Greg Judy and Alan Savory (Savory institute) has some great vids on this. I do agree tho…dogs would be easier and very awesome to watch! Check out one of Brad Leone’s newest videos. He visited a farmer who uses dogs for his herd!
Judgy ppl I swear. Do y'all have farms? Or are ya just puttin 2 cents in with no experience? For all y'all that dont do this for a living, Sit back down and watch the show🎉 And for any negative opinions that are from farmers 🤨🙄😐 you been there done that. Its not for the weak or couch potatoes. Lots of work, lots of time, good days and bad days, thinking outside the box, and taking time to rest so ya don't get burnt out. Come on y'all, just relax and enjoy the show. But continue to comment cause thats $$$$😂
Why are you not making your own butter, sour cream, and cheese? Buying from other farmers is the same as buying from the grocery store. You are not eliminating the grocery store by changing providers of the food. You should not be allowed to own sheep. They live in pain and misery until they die, either sell them or get them a vet so they can live pain-free. So cruel, poor animals.
Right- too much milk to the pigs and not enough for other dairy products! I get that time is the tradeoff and maybe it’s not high enough on their priority list with so much going on but I feel like Lilly would be a great cheese maker from her baking experience.
Pigs get the whey which us by - product of milk after you use it sll up by taking what is needed to make cheese, yogurt, n cream , plus whatever else.... When young cow has baby then they will have more milk for what they still sre buy now...
Y'all are hilarious, trying to make up the rules to their life. Justin and Rebecca make the rules. And buying from other farmers is not like buying from a national grocery chain -- hardly! Supporting other local small farms is the answer.
7:08 "Could I have them in ME?" "No, you bathe every day". 😁 Thank goodness. What are we doing wrong that animals get fly infestations? In the wild, they live near water and are able to wash. Whatever happened to "sheep dip", and pans of disinfectant that sheep and sometimes kids were made to walk through back in the day?
@@dawncooper4739 Guess I shouldn't post while drunk, should I? Ok, I'll edit that bit, even if it was good-natured. Although I do think it's a little funny that they don't work in the rain...

🥹you are awesome to give them such detailed advice. Sometimes I wonder why they show the animals hurt but I’m sure it helps others raising animals.
Support the Millers!!
Jonah, During the GAFT you were really good at using a lasso. I bet with a little bit of practice you could lasso a sheep/calf/goat.
Yes make your own mozzarella.
Was wondering how the bees survived that horrible hail storm
Probably just fine. Bees are smarter than the average college (near) graduate.
I am sure they are fine, they probably had a clean the hive day
mozzarella is so easy to make your own . Dont wait till their feet are rotting to treat them. Do a monthly trim and inspection.
i wonder if the chickens would eat those maggots out of the lamb's hoof
Funny… I was picturing that in my head during the video! Lol
But would it hurt if it’s tender? Interesting idea don’t hurt to try right
I had a steer that got tangled up in fence overnight and its leg swelled up and rotted. I just let the maggots clean the wound out and he eventually heal later on with some disinfectant and ointment
You were lucky. Maggots carry infection deeper, even if they only eat dead tissue.
Looks like it’s time to call a vet, before you loose those sheep!
They think they are failing if they call the vet. So the sheep will probably die
they don’t do vaccines and immunizations so i don’t think they want one, though im sure they could tell the vet not to shoot up their animals
The health of the animal should be more important than the price of a grocery shop. 😢

I'd rather have a leech on me to increase blood flow if needed
It is also a sign of necrosis. Good to see the hoof improving.
Incorrect screw worms
The maggots used medically do not consume healthy flesh. Other types do though.
