⭐ About Travel Beans:
Hello and welcome to our channel! We are Alex & Emma, a British couple who have been exploring the world together for over 10 years - from backpacking to vanlife:
2012/13: We both embarked on our own solo backpacking trips through Southeast Asia, where we would eventually meet at a hostel in the mountains of Thailand and begin traveling together. After a year and a half of backpacking around Southeast Asia & Australia, we returned home and to the corporate world!
2015: Travel Beans was born and we filmed our first videos on a road trip around Europe with friends! This was our biggest trip yet.. and you can go back and watch the entire adventure because we filmed ALL of it! This trip took us through Russia, Mongolia & China, on the longest railway journey in the world. Followed by highlights such as staying on a local island in the Maldives for a month, going on safari in Sri Lanka, couchsurfing & hitchhiking in Korea, seeing the snow monkeys in Japan, island hopping in the Philippines, trekking 60km through the centre of Myanmar, exploring the Indian Himalayas, and checking out some of the incredible US National Parks.
2016: Despite an unbelievably memorable year and a half of travels, which we were incredibly grateful to have had the privilege to experience.. we found ourselves in New York City, battling depression. At this point, we decided to go home and confront this problem head-on.
2017: After 6 tough months at home we decided to go away again, but this time with a goal in mind.. to turn travel into a lifestyle. We left the UK with just £500 in our bank account and a dream to make a continuous travel lifestyle happen! We both got online English teaching jobs to be able to fund our travels and to keep creating videos. We can't quite believe that our younger selves decided to take this plunge but we are so grateful they did as we are still on this journey today!
What now?
Over the years, we've discovered that we LOVE road trips and even decided to renovate our very own little VWT4 van into a campervan to be able to enjoy vanlife and spend more time on the road. We are now the proud owners of 2 awesome little campers - one based in the UK and one that we keep in the USA. You'll often find us using one of these vans to explore Europe and North America. If you enjoy this kind of content we'd recommend checking out our Italy Road Trip series, USA vanlife series and our Japan in a Tiny Van series as well as our UK vanlife content.
Our time spent overcoming depression has influenced our outlook on life dramatically! We are now traveling the world in search of what makes us happy. We love sharing the highs and lows of our trips through our videos and hope to spread a little positivity and light to all of the beautiful people who take the time to tune in and watch each week!

One of the best videos yet. Our favorite six people on UA-cam. Both you and LEAW are our "look forward to" every week. And yes, we've virtually adopted Noah and Lucia as our grandchildren.
Hope you're considering Sicily. It's one of our favorite destinations. Love you all.
Sir can yiu tell me how to buy 1 Euro Italy houses I need the process
Hello, I would like to purchase a apartment in France as a second house, what taxes I need to pay in UK, please advise, or could you please let me know, where I can find this information?
Hello I watched a few minutes, interesting topic but: cannot hear what the owners are saying without baby having their say also...
Just needs to be more professional so we can hear the content not the baby 😉
Very powerful story of
what is and what isn’t really important. “A millionaire has a million wishes but a sick man has only one!” It’s later than any of us think.
Love that quote, never heard it before.
Wow, very powerful! Live your life with love and share it!! ❤❤❤
A million thanks from a sick man 😊🙏✨️
Perfect, thank you so much ❤
God bless this man who had the strokes. I was also fit ,and worked full time as a Midwife. Driving home from a night shift, I had the first of 4 strokes. I managed to stop the car on a , luckily, nearly empty road. I lost speech and movement in my right side. Whilst I recognised my husband and 2 young sons, I couldn't remember my sons' names, which was terrifying for them. I slowly recovered, and eventually returned to work. We re-evaluated our lives and decided we had to live our dreams. We emigrated from the UK to Australia, then moved to New Zealand. We enjoyed both Countries but I missed Europe. The close proximity of different Countries and cultures. I had my 3 rd stroke, and we decided to fulfil the dream I'd held, since Childhood. We packed again, and moved to Europe . We're all healthy, ( despite a small stroke. Turns out a major artery hadn't ever formed in my brain) We're happy in a way we've never been.,
The only true treasure in life, worth having, is our health !!
Wow, I thought this was a video about renovating a 1 euro home in Italy. In reality, it is an amazing story of humanity. I was not prepared to watch this a day after attending a funeral for a friend from high-school who sadly ended his life after struggling with mental health issues for several years. Gosh, when Luca said health is the most important thing and here I am lying on my couch…Thank you for sharing!
re sitting on the couch listening to Luca's story... had the same experience as you, on the couch, looking out the window to a blue cloudless sky, promised myself I'd go for a long walk with my wife after.
We love you guys ❤ thank you for your visit and the amazing time together
Been watching and subscribed to your videos for around a year or so now.I love seeing how your life in Sicily is progressing.❤
We did exactly what your friends did. We were allured by the 1e house idea, but ended up buying a house for €25k in Caltagirone. It is in move-in condition, just needs interior work to modernise it and make it our own.
We've had an uptick in heart attack and stroke in younger people in the US the last 3 years. I pray you are ok, now. My neighbor is a cardiologist who has been treating a lot of young people.
Sicily, absolutely! The people are warm, all-embracing and so kind. It’s the type of community that always has your back. Who could really want for more?
I have travelled the world and i have reached your same conclusion 🎉🎉🎉😂😅 Sicily for ever
Until you try to open your own private business
It was great to see you guys again. I have been watching Luca and Sara for a bit now. Their story tugs at my heart. I don't think they realize just how strong and resilient they are. Such wonderful people.......not to mention Lucia, lol. So happy you met up with them. Loved Sweden, but Italy fascinates me. Do your research, schools, medical, air quality, seasons, etc. I have heard Italy isn't high on the list of places some people would chose. Keep in mind you aren't "some people". You do you! Daunting isn't it?..... but exciting. Just don't bite off more than you can chew..... I know, old cliché, but I am old, so I can say that. I hope you find what makes your hearts sing. Sooner rather than later. My personal preference is anything coastal. I truly believe in the health and healing properties of the sea. So I guess that would be one vote for Sicily. Hugs for Noah ❤❤❤
Love your comment 🫶 from Amsterdam
Thanks you Irene 💛 they are such wonderful people, it has been so nice to spend time with them and hear their story.
Yes the property search is definitely daunting.. especially as we are making the decision for Noah as well as ourselves. Want to make sure it’s the right one 😊🙏
@@TravelBeans I want to jump in to address something said that you are responding too about how Italy isn't high on the list compared to other countries for things like education and medical. I can tell you from personal experience as an American living in Italy the last 7 years and having lived here in the past, Italy is exceptional when it comes to education and healthcare. I can compare it to the US, though not to England, when I tell you that the schools here are top notch. You will never have to worry about your child getting a good education here. Also, for medical, it does highly depend on where you are, but Italy's system is among the best in Europe and beyond. The doctors are professional, the care fantastic, and the facilities are modern and efficient. However, having previously lived in Sicily and now live in Friuli, the healthcare is not nearly as good in Sicily as it is in the north of Italy so keep that in mind.
Luca has an amazing and inspiring story. You Beans are well to take a break from the craziness of home hunting. Live your life! Being healthy and happy is what is important. No matter where you three are or what your doing it is that togetherness that will stay with you.
Thank you for the lovely comment.. definitely agree that togetherness is what is the most important thing right now 🥰

My 2 favourite couples on UA-cam for sure ! So goo to see Sarah back on her feet again. She was so poorly in the last video. I wish you 6 guys all the best from the bottom of my heart! Thank you for this video!
Thank you 🙏
@@TravelBeans hello there! It was nice to watch your visiting that lovely Italian family! Is the name of that village a secret? :P Love Sicilia!
Two of my favorite UA-cam channels together! I love it!
Thank you 🙏 💛
It’s amazing that people I follow on UA-cam hook up.
There's no such thing as a 1 euro house. You are given the property in the villages that run the "1 euro" scheme and the houses that are in the scheme are usually uninhabitable. You sign a contract that you will invest € 25,000 to € 30,000 in refurbishment or renovation within 3 years of signing. Many have minimum length of residency schemes ie you agree to live in the property for 2 or 3 years or so. Maybe longer in some cases. It's a serious commitment. Some houses need full electrical rewiring or wiring for the first time. Ditto plumbing. And roofs cost a FORTUNE to renovate / replace unless you're a roofing expert.
I'd say the 1 euro houses are strictly for builders, electricians, plumbers, roofers, or very talented amateurs. It's a serious business. It's not just about "being on holiday" and La Dolce Vita.
(And Italian bureaucracy, taxes, utilities etc are a nightmare.)
The € 20 to € 30 thousand investment is a MINIMUM, for small houses. Larger houses require much work which can run into hundreds of thousands or even millions in the case of some of these Italian palazzos on the market for € 70 or €90 thousand. Don't even think about it unless you have serious wealth.
No worse than renovating a semi derelict property in an AONB/conservation area in England, at least the hoops and miles of red tape are in English not Italian. The cost for materials and labour are far higher in England, finding period correct materials, fixtures and fittings is far harder.
@tonys1636
Of course a full renovation is expensive and tough in any country. I owned a house in a conservation area in Lincolnshire. I know, believe me. Nevertheless, in many of these Italian places really major work is required. I saw a video on a beautiful 18th century palazzo for sale for a really low price. Under 100,000 £, I think. The house or mansion had beautiful frescos which are art treasures in their own right. Not a job for any old Bob the Builder. The thing is that the property was 18th century. Nothing had been added or done since. No bathrooms or plumbing. Not sure about electricity. A proper refurbishment would probably cost millions. If you are an expert at that kind of thing, fair enough. Very few people are. That's all I'm saying. As for England being "more expensive", don't bank on it. I'm not familiar with Italy. But here in Normandy where I'm based, a local French guy quoted € 3000 for a replacement window ! A local English bloke did a beautiful job for just over € 400. And he's not particularly cheap either.
Looks amazing area For holiday / to live. But 1 Euro never there’s always a catch and a BUT ?
Though for some renovations are fun ,hobby you have to have the Financial Freedom, dedication
To work hard on getting it finished with hopefully Not any extra costs 🤔. ( unless you have to get hulp to build )
Also depending on where you buy which country rules, laws regulations medical, schools visa requirements.
Think you both have to write down all the pros& cons of each country costs of living 🤷♀️.
Succes with your Decisions, and with your Health / Fit journey 🫶. Have a good weekend 🥰

Absolutely. There's no such thing as a free lunch. It's a cliché, but true nevertheless.
Hello 👋. I have followed you over from LEAW. Been watching their videos since they bought the house in Sicily. All their issues with the plumbing, kitchen floor, and renovating their house. I saw the video of you two visiting last week. Good luck finding your home, I know it will come. Take care and will watch your videos soon.
What Luca and Sara are doing is exactly what I have always dreamed of doing. I have family in the Palermo area I have never met. Headed there next April - May Hoping to find them? First time I went to Italy I felt at home. I think Sicily will be almost impossible to leave. Good luck to you both hope you find your home.
I follow Luca and Sarah at LEAW ( Leave Everything And Wonder)…. they are such a loving and kind couple ( and their daughter Luce) remodeling their home in Sicily and purchased an Olive Grove.
I am subscribing to your channel now as I saw you both on theirs.
So excited to follow your journeys as well.❤
You just seemed so happy in Sweden. It just seemed so perfect
Live in the US and we bought a small house in Italy a couple years ago and plan on living there even if only a couple of months a year or just selling everything here and retire there
I wouldn’t buy the one euro house because of the strings attached. Keep looking. Find something that doesn’t have strings or conditions. But keep looking. I find it interesting. Particularly finding out what the travel restrictions might be for a foreigner buying and living in the various countries.
Found you through Luca, Sara, amd Lucé. I find it amusing that you are in Itlay and your sonsot is Hello Fresh, and you are saying that you can "spend less time preparing food, and ....(etc.) Luca is right, no diets OR dissing food preparation - when in Italy, especially. This is cognitive dissonance in its definition! Hearing the story of Luca's
medical journey and how it affected his family was very important to hear from a spontaneous questioning. I felt the empathy and compassion for their experience, again. The dearness of valuing life. Thank you. Enjoy Italy (I'm sure you will)!
We were excited to hear (as Americans) that the US and Italy have reciprocity between the countries. We can buy homes in Italy, Italians can buy homes in America. We were thisclose to buying a vacation home in Italy because homes there can be so darn cheap. BUT, that idea was put on hold after we found out while we can buy a home there, we're limited to 6 months a year of visitstion that can't be consecutive months. So three months in Italy, three months back on the US, three months in Italy, etc. It was disappointing to learn this but c'est la vie.
The 90 day rule is exactly the same for British citizens visiting Italy (or rest of EU Schengen zone).
You can thank Rocky for that 😂
The 90 day rule is exactly the same when people in Europe visit the US
@@beac9325 For sure, but not all European countries have home buying reciprocity with the US as Italy does.
@@RocksOff72 in many countries in the European Union you can buy a house as an American
Sara and Luca's beautiful work - and MONTALBANO - are two reasons I would like to settle in Sicily.
I am 85. I have been to Portugal, Sweden, Italy (but not Sicily, sadly). Also places like China, USSR, Russia, Egypt, all 50 US states and many more countries, as driving the Mexican Baja.... my home is on a lake 50 miles NW of Detroit, Michigan. We have another home in Naples, FL. That combination works for us. Boats in both places. Freedom and stability and weather, and medical care nearby. Just my 2 cents. btw, we also put 143,000 miles on a 40 ft Class A motorhome in the USA, Canda & Mexico. Enjoy.
Wow!
77...onlyb36 st a test. And 4 countries...all great fun!
Amazing, living the dream!
What an amazing life to lead! Is your main home in USA or Canada? I don’t recognise where you say your homes are- one place is Naples, just like Italy! Here in Australia we have places with similar names to other worldwide cities too.
@@marabanara I think it means Naples, Florida
Hi, just came over from Sara & Luca’s channel. Watched some of your videos and your adventures. I like your videos, very much. Hope you find your perfect place 👍🏻💕🇺🇸
Lovely to see you rendezvous with Luca and Sara (and little Luce). I hope they were helpful in your search for a new home. It would be pretty terrific if you two settled in the same Sicilian town. Building an international community of like minded people.
Sara got a degree to support her olive grove dream! Can we talk about Noah blowing kisses from his carrier to Luce on her Papa's shoulders ❤😊
We met Luca and Sara pre pandemic through Trent and Allie. The irony is we are in Newfoundland for the summer in our van, and all you young couples are Nesting. Life is so Interesting.
You don't have to deprive yourself of the good food! Just use portion control and extra steps so you get to enjoy all the things!
Our daughter lives in Italy and the corruption, Italian bureaucracy, taxes and requirements are definitely off putting. Maybe Portugal is easier, I don't know
Is she forced to live there?
Agreed, my partner is Italian and he said Italy is great until you need something from the government.
@@maxi20041 You're missing the point.
@OlavSchneider
Of course you're right. S/he IS missing the point. Obviously nobody is FORCED to live in Italy and I'm surprised that anyone wants to, given their government and general shambles in everything, plus massive corruption. The tragedy is that Italy is a beautiful country with so much history and culture, and it's all falling apart and going to rack and ruin. But that's Italians for you.
Corruption?
Two of my favorite youtube families in the same vid!! The juxtaposition is interesting.
Thank you! So glad you enjoyed it 🙏💛
I have been following Luca and Sara for some years now and find them to be a very impressive couple.☺ This was a very interesting and informative video, thanks for sharing it.☺♥

This is such a reality check!! We take things for granted all day long. This Medical event luckily turned out and the patient has made a wonderful recovery!!! Thank God and your lucky stars!!! Thanks for sharing. Toledo 💙
I heard from a farmer ho farms in Sicily that water on farms is quite unreliable and they had to scale down their plans of organic produce because of the water situation. They were buying bottled water. Water is diverted to supply city folk. The reservoir was extremely low this year so Sicily really needs a desalination plant badly as the weather extremes happens. “A reservoir is an artificial lake where water is stored”
This is why I love the Travel Beans!

Portugal is the plan for us.
Recognised Sara and Lucas olive grove straightaway in your intro. Aren’t they just the most lovely couple, now trio, with little Lucia lighting up their lives. ❤
How do you stay 'you', accessible, and yet cover some of the deepest, most emotional topics, in an accessible way - you are both amazing.
Being incredibly selfish but on behalf of so many people...., please - we need you to stay well, keep going and just inspire so many others.
"Influencer" can be trivial and superficial, or soooo positively impactful. You continue to be the latter.
So glad to see you with leaw
Teh only issue is the healthcare access and QUALITY is not as good in Southern Italy, where they are now...in case anything happens again.
I follow Sara and Luca also - you guys are good all together
💯 So I glad you guys got together especially as they're last vid was tough as they got ill on their 2wk holiday & Sara was still unwell in last vid. I started watching you guys after you vid with Endless Adventure & started watching Luca & and Sara after saw the health scare on my timeline & and turned out cause was a rareish condition that I'm also at risk getting #CSFleak & in last few mths discovered I have Italian ancestry inc at least 1 that lived in Sicily as nobility (had zero clue) I always loved Italy especially Venice (had a Holiday there several yrs back) where I couldn't believe also ancestors from there, ecstatic to find out as my dna didn't pick it up as too far back beyond 500yrs 14th cen & I beyond. ps already knew also Portuguese ancestry & yes my bit of vikings maybe Swedish too 😅
Don't believe in coincidences anymore adjust synchronicities.
I already bought a house in Central Portugal....watching your travels here back in the day helped me decide to go for it. ;)
Congratulations! So happy to hear you took the plunge - that’s so exciting!!
All I can say is, you’ll know when it’s the right thing like Luca and Sara did. Being in the U.S. I’m always ready to jump ship for another place!! Portugal would be top of my list right now.
I follow their channel, really nice people
We've been on a similar journey looking for a home base outside our home country. We've realized that aside from the cost of a house, the next big expense is food. So while Sweden and other parts of Western Europe is appealing for housing, countries with lower costs for food are a better option, i.e. Eastern Europe/Serbia/Albania/Turkey...etc
My partner is Turkish and I'd say it's too volatile at the moment
@@jj-if6it Yes, I feel for the locals. It's been a crazy few years concerning inflation. Those who are geoarbitraging may benefit.

Saw you from LEAW,I've been watching them from the beginning and it's been a amazing journey ❤😊 Nice to see your video now,so exciting 😊
Honestly, I really love that you are opening my eyes to more options! I didn't think about Sicily before. I have been seeing that online about Japan similar to Italy about the abandoned homes and people purchasing there, but I wouldnt know how to. I am interesting in having a home in my mother's home country (Germany) and at least visiting my father's home country (Philippines) one day.
Why would anyone NOT want to live in Italy or the surrounding islands? Beautiful scenery, delicious food & great wine.
If you have money, sure. The job market absolutely sucks
Not really my cup of tea to be honest. I feel like I would be super bored out there.
May be the fact europeans hate the British
If you speak the language..
I live in Spain, and lots of Italians have moved here as they say it's really hard to make a living in parts of Italy. It is gorgeous though, and the food......it's the best in the world.
Hi Sara and Luca!
Yes, we did England, Scotland and western Europe... often. First in 1957 for 3 months.
love the content ty for taking us along on your journey
We have been following travel beans and LEAW for 18 months and it was great to see you get together…brilliant. All we need now is fir itchy boots to arrive in Sicily on her motorbike …
Italy is the best choice; the warm weather, warm-hearted people (being integrated into a community), cheap housing, good weather for growing food, good health care, amazing food etc.
It's pretty cool to see two channels I follow getting together!!
Italy is probably the only country I would live in Europe.
I have Italian blood, but I don't speak Italian. I do speak Portuguese, English, French and Spanish, so, Italian wouldn't be that hard.
But my first choice still is moving back to the US.
I went on this search and ended up in Hungary. Love it here. Thanks for sharing

Sweden. And if you have the energy and skills for it, you can buy, renovate and sell a few cabins/houses to get to the size and standard you would like to have. Just make sure it will be possible to sell it with a profit when it is renovated.

Sicily is absolutely beautiful! I’m so glad that y’all met up with Sara, Luca & Luce, I have been following them for a very long time.
My biggest problem would be the language.
Have you thought of Belize? I’ve heard that there are many English speaking people there. I believe a lot of Americans have bought property down there. You already have a camper van in the America’s, you could pick up your van & drive to Belize. I bet there would be plenty to see on a trip like that🤗 Just a thought 😊

I would move to Sarah and Luca’s village in a heartbeat! But I’m 71 😂😂😂😂
Take care of yourself and family first videos can wait
Bavaria is on my list of places I’d look at. I know Germany is very expensive to live in but to buy a house in the Rheinland or similar isn’t costly and you get all the nature Italy has.
I would buy one that could be lived in already. Not a one euro house. I love Italy.
very nice and encouraging video! What is the UA-cam channel for the guest couple.
I've seen some beautiful move-in ready houses at around €35k+ that even have an earing potential. It looks like a great way to retire.
Wow, you guys are collabing with people all over the world
Spain for me but recently I keep getting notifications for property in Italy so you never know 😊
I just learned about you by watching Sara and Luca's video today! I've subscribed and look forward to seeing more of your adventures! BTW My answer to your question is that I would absolutely buy a house in Italy, if given the choice. Sicily would be great, but my husband said he wouldn't be able to handle the hot weather (we live in Belgium, so he's definitely not used to that!).
Haha, the lettuce 🥬 alone ain’t going to cut it Alex? Went to the docs 12 months ago just felt rough as a bears arse- she said your having a heart attack- she said do you want me to call you an ambulance? 2 of my favorite UA-cam couples, very nice. Hope you become neighbors
You never know! 😊
When our kids were young we decided not to have a vacation house somewhere and instead use the money to travel. Now with grown children and having grandparents who came from Italy, owning a home there would be incredible.

Good advice for everyone to take CPR and first aid training. And to remember that health is wealth...if you might die to morrow..how shall you live life today? AS far as finding a way to settle and where...I would look now at access to water, power and other climate and resource access. Then I would think about the government and social services..health care, senior care. I do not know how you could not consider these just as carefully as the cost of property.
Come to Tuscany in the Lunigiana region. Great bargains for Holiday homes with incredible wildlife.
Before deciding to buy a house in a small town, whether in Sicily or elsewhere, it’s essential to consider the local infrastructure and services, especially healthcare. Additionally, assess the risk of natural disasters, particularly in light of climate change. Italy, especially the northern regions, has been hit hard this year.
If I were to purchase a home, I would think of a school for your son, security, medical, taxes, rules and regulations from municipality and most of all good neighbours. I would not purchase a home attached to some one else.
That food looks the best!!!! And love a messina beer ❤ loved this vlog. Lots of feels coming on. And Noah has great taste in fruit
Probably Italy - bellissimo - Thanks guys! Great films. Don't forget all the hidden costs - local rates/land rents to local gov. - if any. - travel to towns/beach - builders costs if places need attention as part of cheap purchase deal. Bless Badger.
I would definitely buy a house in Italy or the south of France
Personally I would be inclined to buy a house in sweden
Italy!! I will have my dual citizenship by the end of the year and plan to buy a place and move in 2025. You guys are always welcome. I'll let you know where and exactly when in a private message. Cheers!!
Loved this!
In my opinion you do not need to “go on a diet”, you just need to change your eating habits, eat healthy, watch your portions and try to start an exercise program. I did that during COVID and lost 20 pounds and have been successful in keeping it off. I exercise in my basement to videos. I am 74 and I am in better shape than when I was in my sixties. It will be harder with a small child, but you will figure it out. Italy would be a beautiful place to buy a house!

If you want to buy in Italy, Sara & Luca are the right people to help you guys buy for the right price. If climate change is a factor probably better off in Sweden. If you think property will go up in value buy now. If you think property will come down buy later. And if you buy a fixer upper you can get in shape that way - win, win situation. Good luck in your travels!
meh stay away form house that are attached ..... you are dependnt on teh people you share a wall with to gets thinsg done
I am looking for your video regarding your new place but I haven't been able to find it does anyone know where it is
I think Sicily is absolutely fascinating but my tendency now is to move towards Spain and I love the area of Andalusia where the Moors were because the architecture is exquisite and I would hope to be on the ocean.
Also for many people it may be of no importance but Spain as well as Ireland with the first two countries to side with the Palestinians who have been robbed of their birthright and the land of their ancestors for 3/4 Century on so I feel more in tune with these people than I would with the Italians who I do adore and where I have lived for about almost a year and study Italian and spoke Italian but I also spoke and studied Spanish so smart sticks for me as for language and I think in the end of the Spanish people have the bigger heart so that's what I will be
Sorry, but immediately into the video and you are both incorrect. About the rules/guidelines they are different for every municipality And definitely not all 1 euros houses are ruins. And it can definitely be worth it.
No Way!!! I watch their channel!! Have for over a yr now😊❤
