Paul Simon, of Simon and Garfunkel (the original writers/performers of the song), actually told David Draiman that his cover was the greatest version he's ever heard.
Was just, literally 2 minutes ago, saying this is the best version EVER

That is not what Paul Simon said. Art Garfunkel has said anything. Paul, about Disturbed performing the cover on Conan. Simon sent David Draiman an e-mail praising the cover that said, “Really powerful performance on Conan the other day,” . “First time I'd seen you do it live". He sent that to David, on Jul 29, 2021 This is the only thing Paul Simon has ever said about it, and David shared/showed it during an interview.
@@BrendaBodwin David draiman took a trip somewhere and Paul Simon was also there and they sat and talked. He praised draiman for their cover.
@@hughjanus9557 No, he didnt. You can google it, watch David in the interview telling about the email from Paul, the day after he did it Conan, , and see the actual email communication. Plus, I asked, and was told "No", "People make up things, because that's what they want to think". "People don't listen when I tell them that he emailed me and what the email said". Everything else being said about it, is a lie. There has only been 1 communication, between thex2 about it... the email that Paul sent to David. That's it.
David was trained initially as a Jewish Cantor singing in the Temple. What an amazing vocalist. 😍😻
My mom is in her 60's, I played this song for her a few years ago and she was crying because she liked it so much ❤

I tried like hell to get my father to listen to it but hes too stuck in his ways and refused saying nothing could beat the original, shame he wouldnt even try.

you love the song so much you're having an emotional reaction and your friends are like "yeah, it was pretty good." I know the feeling.
THE WARNING The first stanza Simon refers to darkness as being his "old friend" that he came to talk with because he was awoken in the middle of the night, of a nightmare that still lingers in his head, that gives his a considerable amount of distress. So bad that the awful visions were still flashing before his eyes as he is awake.
Second stanza begins setting the scene in which the dream took place: at night, him walking along the cobblestone road where he stops below the light of a streetlight. The cold chill runs up his back, so he lifts his collar to the "cold and damp." Just then, a blight neon sign lit up, showing that he, in fact, was not alone. But there were "ten thousand maybe more" all gathered in the cold night. The people who are talking, not speaking, are politicians, who are using false words to sway the population to vote for them, never revealing true intentions. The people therefore are hearing are not listening.
They are taking these words that are spoken to them in plain value, not examining or putting into depth anything that is said. Because of this, as referred to later, these politicians have formed a government that the people in fact voted for and supported until it began to act as a dictatorship. This seems that Simon is making an inditement to a large government that has taken away the freedoms of its people. A future for America it seemed with the rise of government in world affairs as in entered Vietnam. This "future America" has given Americans everything, and has the power the take it all away, hence the people "bow and pray to the neon god they made."
The Silence that is referred to is the silence of the people, afraid to say anything against the government for fear of death or worse. Simon, or whoever has had this dream, tries to bring people to speak out. Saying "Fools, you do not know, Silence like a cancer grows" that as more are afraid to speak, the more control the government takes and the less anyone will stand up to the new government.
As all hope is about to be given up, someone steps up and says to the crowd that the future they will hold has been written on the walls of subways and tenement halls. This is because this form of protest can be done anonymously, therefore no one can get in trouble for it. This begins the whispering in the silence of the people, and starts the beginning of a revolt.

Any song that brings such emotional reactions is indeed a great song.
One has never witnessed someone so devoid of emotion and reaction to an artist singing live putting in so much effort and raw emotion into his performance as the young lady in red and white.

That's what another reaction video said. She is a vocal coach. He has an amazing ability to switch from distorted to clean with little effort. Most people will strain and visibly show it. He doesn't show any effort and is smooth as he transitions

Wrong. The best Live cover of any song ever is Unchained Melody by the Righteous Brothers. Long before Auto tune. Draimin nailed this with a bit of autotuning.

I've seen a bunch of reaction videos to this song. People that do NOT respond emotionally to this song are truly disturbed. I've seen people giggle and laugh and people that just analyze this performance without responding emotionally. This song is precisely about those people. If that was your initial response to this song, you have serious problems. This song is about you - "People talking without speaking / People hearing without listening".

If you look at his eyes in this and compare to the official video, you can see the effects of the fever he was suffering. Watch for it in the third verse "people talking without speaking, people hearing..."
All of his actions - hand gestures, his eyes, how he holds the mic etc. are part of his performance. Check out their 2016 Beverly Kills performance.
@@unknownrider3071 Yes, but I'm talking medically about the red and feverish glassiness in his eyes, not artistically how he uses his eyes in his performance. You can actually see it best at the point in the song I mention.
@@Bellas1717 Do you have a reference from him, one of Disturbed's members, or even Conan that he was sick? It could actually be drugs. I mean, by the time he was 18 he was a drug addict, found unconscious under a parked car on a Chicago street in the dead of winter.

@@unknownrider3071 I guess no one can know definitively without a drug test, but if you've had enough experience with both drug usage and flu effects on the body, you can get a very good idea. Hence my comment about checking his eyes to see the illness there. Listen to some of his interviews around how drugs led to his girlfriend's overdose, and why nearly freezing to death that day in Chicago was the lowest point for him. He spent months in withdrawal and hasn't used since. Then interviews on how upset he was with his performance on Conan, how he was coming down with the flu and was not at his best with timing (you hear it in the last verse where he scrambles a bit to catch up to the backing, also the extra breaths he takes in the final line of the song.) Cheers.

The original dark video helps convey the message of the song. Which is people not paying attention of what people are pleading for or things happening around them.

The drums are called timpanis or kettle drums.
So basically a full run down on alot. Dave was trained as a Jewish Cantor to sing the Torah, like his father and grandfather. He was sick the night he preformed, told the producers he had it... they still autotuned him and it pissed him off. Simon has also said that the song is now his. And the final piece... the S&G version was a warning, Dave sang it in anger because the warning was not listened to.
In answer to your question, the drums are called "Timpani" sometimes known as "kettle drums." Great reaction!

This song has always been of Biblical Proportions, Paul Simon's, (Simon and Garfunkel) original was trying to wake us up and too many kept sleeping, Disturbed's version, is to shake those that were oblivious to where we are going. I pray this will stir many more to what is so important.
