How to Make an Oreo Cake

  • OREO CAKE!!!!!! I love cookies and I love cake but it never occured to me to put them together until a very special birthday request for an Oreo Cake! Cookies and Cream cakes are so amazing. It's somewthing about the crunch and creaminess that just sets them apart. This has become one of the most popular posts on my blog so you know it's got to be good!
I whipped up my moistest cake (is there a synonym for moist because I am NOT a fan of the word but am constantly forced to use it ?) and folded in chopped Oreos. There is - of course - a swirl of ganache because chocolate because it’s absolutely delicious.
Don’t forget the BEST BEST BEST part: the buttercream!!! I’ll be honest and tell you that I’ve never craved an Oreo - or eaten more than a couple at a time - but when crushed and blended into buttercream, they’re AMAZING!!! If you want the EASIEST cake hack ever, just whip up some of this stuff. Cover anything in it and you’ll be an instant hero? Channel your inner superman and make this crowd pleaser.

@@antoniettevitajaneantonio5076 I used 6 inch pans - 3 of them - bought them at Walmart - Wilton brand, I think they were about $8 each...use them all the time now instead of 8" pans.
      TIP
I use 3 pans, but typically make a 2 layer cake and freeze the third layer. When I want a small desert I just take that layer out, thaw it, cut it in half and frost like normal.....great for a couple or a small desert that will be gone in one sitting so there's no leftovers to temp you later ;)

    Ingredients
    For the Cake
    2 cups all-purpose flour 237g
    1 cup granulated sugar 228g
    1/4 tsp baking soda
    1 tsp baking powder
    1/4 tsp kosher salt
3/4 cup unsalted butter 176g, room temp
    3 egg whites
    1 tsp vanilla extract 5mL
1/2 cup sour cream 133g, room temp
1/2 cup whole milk 113g, room temp
    1 cup chopped Oreos 120g
    For the Buttercream:
    1 1/2 cup butter 340g, room temp
    5 cups confectioners' sugar 600g
    1 1/3 cups crushed Oreos 165g
    1/4 cup heavy cream 60g
    pinch salt kosher
For the Ganache:1 cup semisweet chocolate chips 200g
1/2 cup Heavy cream 110g, heated
    Instructions
    For the Cake
Butter and flour three six inch pans. I use cake strips on my pans for more even baking as well. Preheat oven to 340F
In a standing mixture fitted with a paddle attachment, beat butter until light and fluffy.
Sift the dry ingredients together in a large bowl.
Beat the dry ingredients into the butter until well incorporated, scrape the bowl at least once.
Beat the wet ingredients together in a medium bowl.
Add the wet to the butter mixture and mix until just combined. Fold in the crushed Oreos at the very end and mix until just combined.
Divide the mixture evenly into the cake pans
Bake at 340 for about 25-30 minutes or until the centers are springy to the touch.
    For the Buttercream
Beat the butter until light and fluffy. Add the confectioners' sugar and cream and mix.
Reserve about a cup of the buttercream for the white dollops. Which will be piped with an 869 tip.
Mix in the crushed Oreos into the large batch of buttercream.
    For the Ganache
Melt chocolate and cream together on low heat. Whisk together and set aside. You might need to add more or less cream to achieve the desired consistency.
    For the Assembly
Oreo buttercream goes between each layer as well as a swirl of chocolate. Don't go overboard with the ganache as it will overpower the other flavors.
Coat outside with buttercream and smooth.
Add a skirt of crushed Oreos at the bottom of the cake.
Pour the ganache on top and allow to drip. Smooth top with an offset spatula.
Pipe white buttercream dollops on top with an 869 tip
Baking TipsYou can make the cake layers in advance, wrap them up and store at room temperature for a day or in the fridge for three days.
To get FLAT layers that are moist inside and out try using cake strips!
You can buy a set online or make your own from foil and paper towels at home.
I made a whole blog post on it so check it out if you’re interested!
Before you add the ganache for the drip test the consistency on a plate you're holding perpendicular to the floor.
If the ganache is too thick add a tablespoon of cream and you might need to heat the mixture as well.
Try not to chop the Oreos too finely.
You want some crunch in the cake after baking.
Fold the cookie bits in last and try to evenly distribute them.
Use a kitchen scale to make sure each pan has an equal amount of batter in it.
If you don't have one try using a toothpick in the center to measure the height of the batter, like an oil gauge!
    Hope this helps!!!!😀

Thank you for the recipe! I just made this for my sister's birthday and it was a hit! And thank you for making 6in cakes, they are the perfect size for a small gathering, and most recipes are for bigger cakes.
One note, the change I made was for the ganache, I use another YTer (Cupcake Jemma) recipe for dripping ganache and works great and it is easy, it is a 50% bittersweet chocolate/50% heavy cream, for the 6in cake I used 50g of each and had a tiny bit left, and it wasn't a tick covering of ganache on top, but it help balance the super sweetness of the cake and frosting.
Probably my next cake of yours is the mocha one, looks delicious! Keep the great job you are doing :)

This cake is great! I have just made it and it was a huge hit! I just made the cake, though, without any add-ons, cream or decoration apart from a little ganache and one single cookie on top. I also tried the home-made cake strip to prevent the doming and it worked great, the outside was so fluffy and I think the steam made the cake softer/moister/fluffier. Thank you so much

Preppy Kitchen there's nothing worse than being tricked into watching a video for something so simple and sitting through 14 minutes of nonsense 😂 so thank you very much. I'm always saying "please get to the point!" And end up fast forwarding and passing what I needed to find out!
I did some googling and I HAVE seen these in stores but never really checked to see how they are.
My parents reside in japan and she got back to me saying she has never used them. She's such an avid baker... there's not a day where there wasn't some kind of baked goods at home. It's funny though, i have lived there for 9 years and love the desserts. So now whenever I bake it's somewhat of a fusion of Japanese baking and American baking.
I do have a question though. You mention you use three 6 inch pans. Would your recipes work with two 9 inch pans? Thank you very much for your reply 😋

i made this yesterday and it was so good!! it was my first time making (or tasting) buttercream so i wasn't sure what it should taste like. to be fair i did use salted butter and perhaps the butter in my country is way more salted than american butter because there's this salty taste that's a little off-putting. i didn't want to add too much sugar (my ratio of butter to sugar was 1:2 already) since the cake is already sweet. i have half of the frosting leftover now.
any tips on what i should do?
also, should i chill the cake in the refrigerator? i find doing that makes the frosting hard.

I just made this and it is absolutely delicious! But a small warning though, when I added the chocolate ganache between the layers it acted as a slip and slide! My layers almost all slid off! I put the cake with layers frosted in the freezer for 20-30min and then it allowed me to frost the cake nicely. Just a heads up :0) But that Oreo buttercream frosting though!...My husband couldn’t stop snacking on it and almost ate it all before I had a chance to finish frosting the cake! Keep an eye on that frosting!

I just watched a video of a person making a cake, she put the whole batter into one huge pan. Idk what planet that person is from, but it ain't betty crocker world. That cake musta been dry af, since you'd have to cook it for 40 mins...wow some people shouldn't be allowed to post baking videos. This video looks legit though.
