You touched on so many points that wouldn't be that obvious to everyone, and so descriptive as being a valuable superpower to add onto our life's experiences. Thanks!
Thank you for articulating a somewhat personal subject. I agree with what you said. Litmus test for me is, 'am I happy traveling alone or when I'm with someone?' The answer for me is that I'm much more happy, positive and outreaching when I'm traveling alone. I do question myself, am I being selfish? I then fall back to my litmus test. Traveling with someone has it's conveniences but for me the baggage outweighs the convenience.
I’ve watched a few of your vids and they are good, I’m the same I’ve spent the last 4 years meandering between Asia and Europe avoiding cold weather. I’ve spent 6 mths in Chiang Mai and I don’t know how you can do the same thing day in day out it’s terrible monotonous. I avail of the big discounts on airbnb monthly stays and I move from one place to another every 30 days and I love it. Each to their own and I wish you the very best in the future🙏🏻
I found a question I asked myself, many years ago and have asked a few people in my life. Do you like yourself. I answered yes for myself. Unfortunately others said No. I believe that helps you with feeling good and meeting people on positive level. The people who said No was surprised by their answer because they never thought about if you don't like yourself how that impacts being with others. I say this because travel solo you may be by yourself alot, which is ok to just be... Have a good day!
I think about that too. Can hear Johnny Cash sing that Hurt lyric “ What have I become, my sweetest friend?” You have to take stock. You have to be your own friend. It’s a powerful energy. Sometimes I still find myself anxious and so I make adjustments and peace comes, laughter and kindness.
Thank you so much for the genki lead, i checked it out and is really good value for money travel insurance. I would never have found it otherwise my lasy insurance for 2 months in the philipines cost my nearly $1000 Aus. Wow appreciate it will save me heaps
I am 60 years old and have been traveling since I was 20. While I used to enjoy solo journeys, I now find that I'm more comfortable traveling alone during the day. However, after sunset, I often feel a frequency shift-a need for companionship that has become stronger as I’ve aged. In fact, I’ve noticed that if I’m on my own, I’m less inclined to go out at night. This isn’t about dependency or emotional needs; it’s simply a reflection of my current preferences. I have a deep respect for those who thrive on solo travel-I see many people doing it and admire their independence. But for me, it's important to be honest with myself about what I want at this stage of my life. By acknowledging my preferences, I avoid the uncertainty that comes from ignoring them, which helps me live a more content and fulfilling life-whether I’m traveling solo or with a companion. I understand there’s a belief that "you" are your own companion, but that’s not the point I'm making here. My perspective is simply about personal preferences, not existential views.
@@RetireandGo I enjoy your videos because they are candid, educational and instructive but also, they have a way of building rapport. keep up the good work.
A person can be lonely sitting in their own house! Travelling would at least take your mind off it and it involves you with other people. Gotta be content when u r by yourself.
Retired expat from the US living in Thailand 6+ years. Travel everywhere with my great Thai partner. Don't think I'd enjoy doing it solo. But to each his own.
In the past i have traveled with a suitcase.. no more!! they are a pain in the arse and i will plan on using a backpack. I will start looking at suitable types.
Travelling alone is so much better than with others. No arguments with others, no compromises and you have time for contemplation. You get to explore things you’d never do with others in tow. I love it. I also love travel with others at times as this adds other positive aspects too. But I choose my travel companions carefully.
I think that is smart Once you are on a trip with someone , there is really no out It’s all in I have been in this situation and it’s not good It destroys friendships
I typically travel for 2.5 weeks at a time, twice per year; not retired yet. I don't get lonely. In fact, I find travel is my social time of the year. In my home and at work I used to get lonely, but I've become used to it. Though, I do miss something else and when I travel I find many opportunities. My mistake has been trying to make certain kinds of girls into long-term material and each time it fails!
Great video again. Live with my dog in CM now and love to see you walking/strolling trough the town. I tried to find the Always Cafe on Google Maps but it shows something for out of the city. Could you give me a location or a street name where this nice little cafe it located? Thank you and keep posting your vids. I love them.
Nice advice and you're a great presenter. Are you avoiding steamed rice on purpose for dietary reasons? You're often eating dishes which are really designed to go with a serve of rice. I saw you do it with the red curry duck, but others you don't 🕵🏼♂️
I always travel solo, it's the best. When I travelled to Tikal in Guatemala I spent nearly 7 hours at the ruins because it was overcast in the morning and I wasn't getting any good shots, so I retraced my steps as the sun came out and retook photos of all the temples. There's no way I could have done that without annoying someone had I not been alone.
It's an interesting thing, meeting people while traveling far from home. The sense of connection grows strong faster. I am less than a year from pulling the FI/RE plug, and I've already made so many connections just talking shit with vloggers in the places I plan on seeing. I've even got a couple of offers for a couch to crash on, which speaks to the generosity I see in a lot of minimalist, stoic, red pill, expat (whatever your driving philosophy!) types. I did the same thing in Europe as a much younger man, but before the internet was really a thing. People on walkabout were still so generous and open to making meaningful friendships that don't require a lot of maintenance - "just drop a postcard here and there" type of friends, and I've kept a lot of them for decades.
Oh my before the internet travel in Europe must have been great I would write about that if you have stories and pictures Another amazing time in the world
@@RetireandGo I have lots of pics. Most of them fuzzy, because cameras were horrible in the 90s. But you're right - there are a lot of interesting things that the internet has completely killed. This ranges from traveling blindly based on personal recommendations to just basic everyday misbehavior in pubs and such because nobody had their iphone in your face 24/7. I'm not saying it was always good, or wholesome, or even legal, but like any good Gen Xer, I would rather get punched in the nose for stepping out of line than get cancelled because some Nelly decided to tell on me.
You are so damn cute lol I travelled as a flight attendant for 25 years and always felt lonely. I have been single for 10 now lol and no longer feel lonely. I find great pleasure I the day to day interactions. I aspire to travel on my own I south east Asia ! Wish I could retire now! Lol ❤
Hey man , just seen a few of your videos. You are definitely spot on with your content brother:-)… I’m surprised one of those beautiful, nice Thai girls have not yet attempted to lock you down yet. Hehe… be safe man!
If you wanted a travel companion you would have had a travel companion to begin with. Solo travel allows you time for introspection and to travel on your terms. Mahalo.
My man…how much do you eat in a day?!?!? I would be huge. Solid video and points. I love traveling solo. I always meet tons of people and am never “alone” or “lonely”
When you are alone you are forced to find your own way. There is nobody to help you anymore. All people should go through this. The sooner in life the better. Yes it's hard at times but that is life. No bailouts or excuses anymore. I have been traveling for the last year solo after my Father died. Mother died 10 years ago. I sold everything that I owned in LA and left. I have a suitcase and backpack. That is my life. How long I can do this emotionally I don't know but I wouldn't have it any other way.
When you travel solo you are more apt to interact with the locals, with a group you are mostly interacting with the group and maybe standing around a street corner somewhere trying to decide where to go for dinner. When you're alone you will meet people, especially other travelers. It happens.
Hello, In years past I traveled in Panama and Colombia solo preparing our new condo that was bought in Panama. My wife followed a year later once everything was set up. While I was away my wife had quality solo time in the States. Married people should not be joined at the hip unable to function without the other. 24/7 of anyone is too much! We have been married for over 30 years now. What we have learned is both of us can operate independently of the other with no issue. This causes less stress as we are both independent, but we choose to be together as that is also a wonderful thing. At some point one of us will check out permanently, but we know that the other will be able to handle life without issue. Remember, at some point, every person you know (including yourself) will be gone. Even if happily married to a wonderful person.... be independent.
Great question Usually I shower after the day of walking and collecting video , 8 hours ! Then begin editing Hours later I go out to find a late dinner Maybe keep up on a tv series :-)
Best to stay solo for as long as you can to see the beauty and how affordable it is there then if the time arrises to mingle and have fun just have a few more baut for that😅
Thanks for answering the question about loneliness, I think you also need to have strength of character to be able to deal with that and have a form of purpose to fill time with. You have clearly found that by way of your channel which certainly fills a niche for low cost, mostly solo travel. I think there is many "expats " that often fall in that loneliness and boredom trap that pushes them towards the bottle and " fleeting " contacts that eventually leaves them astray on the path towards bankruptcy and/or a shortened lifespan. I think for many people that contemplate retirement early in Asia or somewhere else cheaper than the West, you needto at least have a rough plan as to how to , usefully, apply your copious amounts of time, if not, sooner or later you will get lost in the wrong direction, hard to return from....
You’re right it is like a superpower. When I travel I notice almost everyone else seems uncomfortable if they’re alone for an even a short amount. I want to know about romance, you’re healthy and young enough that I’m sure available women peak your interest? But also, tons of scams and pay to play there, so how do you manage it? I’m in a similar place myself in life, and enjoy your channel sir
Pushups in the morning. Long walks and food to die for as you walk the path. This is my plan B. The Buddha path. One more thing to do though. Doctor almost wanted to send me to a specialist because my testosterone is over 1000 and I’m 61yo. So I guess that’s my excuse for needed a woman 🤣 If this plan A fails (Philippines), I’ll head your way (Thailand) and perhaps our paths will cross. 🙏🏽 The path and the food, so amazing.
As an INTP-T, I can appreciate the balanced approach to socializing. Keep up these vids, always good stuff. Btw, what kind of sandals do you recommend?
In my opinion solo is the best way, no drama no stress do all you want to do. Plus its easier to make friends as a solo traveler, when you get old Nd dont feel like as much travelling then settling down works. Some people have to have someone to feel complete i worked my ass of to be someone’s bank and her family no thanks
Great video again! Thank you! Do I recall correctly that you travel with only one backpack which contains everything you need do you leave anything at home in storage? I’m leaving the USA for Bali on 8/24 and I am considering selling all of my worldly possessions apart from a backpack full of clothes.
Yes :-) One backpack There are some gear videos I have up I’m trying to do one every 6 months Please keep us updated ! Your travels are starting soon !
I soooooooo prefer to travel ALONE….I am extremely adaptable I thrive on change and going with the flow. Where in the US did/do you live? I grew up in Atlanta and currently live in an Atlanta suburb. I’ve been to Chiang Mai 30 times since 2005 and have done a lot of work in the northern mountains with refugees and orphans. I just watched your Ubud, Bali vlog where you disclosed living in Hawaii. Yep….very expensive.
Hi can you make a video on how you go from place to place how long do you stay in each country do you pay for a visa like yearly, or do you just stay for what they alow you too. Thanks
Right now I’m in a dilemma because I’m a Solo traveler and a good friend wants to travel with me. He may be a great traveler but I won’t know until we go. I’ve made the mistake of traveling with the wrong person before and that’s how I became a Solo traveler in the first place lol. I’m set in my ways so it’s partially my fault. I always travel last minute so that irritates friends and Family.
Oh my just the opposite I make $24,000 a year on dividend income ! That’s below the US poverty line I’m poor in money But rich in life experiences I’ll take it
If you have time- maybe on a rainy day, I recommend the book The Age of Reason (L'âge de raison) by Jean-Paul Sartre. Maybe you can find it in one your bookstores. From Wikipedia... "The Age of Reason is concerned with Sartre's conception of freedom as the ultimate aim of human existence. The work seeks to illustrate the existentialist notion of ultimate freedom through presenting a detailed account of the characters' psychologies as they are forced to make significant decisions in their lives. As the novel progresses, character narratives espouse Sartre's view of what it means to be free and how one operates within the framework of society with this philosophy. The novel is a fictional reprise of some of the main themes in his major philosophical study Being and Nothingness (1943). One of the notions is that ultimately a person's freedom is unassailable as it is fundamentally part of the nothingness that is the imagination and so cannot be taken away or destroyed."

It is hard to stay "lonely" in Thailand if you stroll the right locations. Loneliness disappears rather quickly when in the company of the friendly ladies of Thailand. Sweet, intellectual, conversational and downright beautiful.
This is a good point about making friends along the way Be careful in the nightlife though Alcohol and theft are the two things that can mess up your travel :-)
I only like to be with women one or two days out of ten and not even for 20 hours total Rest of the time I am fine being alone Can share a meal with a friend 2 or 3 times in ten days but can easily be alone 60 to 70% of the time.

I’m a woman also traveling alone. Yes it is lonely sometimes but I met some nice local people. But I’m also really enjoy my time along
I agree
This is how I feel about it as well
You touched on so many points that wouldn't be that obvious to everyone, and so descriptive as being a valuable superpower to add onto our life's experiences. Thanks!
Thank you
Yes, it’s good to be able to spend time alone. Reflect, think on life
I hope your week is going great :-)
Thank you for articulating a somewhat personal subject.
I understand completely
The main thing is that you enjoy your travel and find peace :-)
Solo travel is the best you travel with friends or a girlfriend you get dramas and it can spoil your holiday peace and quiet can be nice 😅
I understand
I also film so much I would probably drive them crazy haha
I’ve watched a few of your vids and they are good, I’m the same I’ve spent the last 4 years meandering between Asia and Europe avoiding cold weather.
I’ve spent 6 mths in Chiang Mai and I don’t know how you can do the same thing day in day out it’s terrible monotonous.
I avail of the big discounts on airbnb monthly stays and I move from one place to another every 30 days and I love it.
Each to their own and I wish you the very best in the future🙏🏻
I work out daily
Walk
Writing another book
New coffee shop and restaurant daily
There is so much to do
It’s about us not the location :-)
I found a question I asked myself, many years ago and have asked a few people in my life. Do you like yourself. I answered yes for myself. Unfortunately others said No. I believe that helps you with feeling good and meeting people on positive level. The people who said No was surprised by their answer because they never thought about if you don't like yourself how that impacts being with others. I say this because travel solo you may be by yourself alot, which is ok to just be... Have a good day!
I appreciate this
thank you
It is something for us to all ask ourselves
I think about that too. Can hear Johnny Cash sing that Hurt lyric “
What have I become, my sweetest friend?”
You have to take stock. You have to be your own friend. It’s a powerful energy. Sometimes I still find myself anxious and so I make adjustments and peace comes, laughter and kindness.

Thank you for your thoughts on this :-)
I’m the same way
I don’t really go out at night much
@@RetireandGo I enjoy your videos because they are candid, educational and instructive but also, they have a way of building rapport. keep up the good work.
A person can be lonely sitting in their own house! Travelling would at least take your mind off it and it involves you with other people. Gotta be content when u r by yourself.
Well said !

Travelling alone is so much better than with others. No arguments with others, no compromises and you have time for contemplation. You get to explore things you’d never do with others in tow. I love it. I also love travel with others at times as this adds other positive aspects too. But I choose my travel companions carefully.
I think that is smart
Once you are on a trip with someone , there is really no out
It’s all in
I have been in this situation and it’s not good
It destroys friendships
@@RetireandGo Well said. Being trapped with a person with no out is a very difficult situation.
I understand
I have heard this from other travelers like us
I also find traveling social
I need to open up more I think
I enjoys watching your videos. Your message is very refreshing!

Great video again. Live with my dog in CM now and love to see you walking/strolling trough the town. I tried to find the Always Cafe on Google Maps but it shows something for out of the city. Nice advice and you're a great presenter.
Are you avoiding steamed rice on purpose for dietary reasons? You're often eating dishes which are really designed to go with a serve of rice. I saw you do it with the red curry duck, but others you don't 🕵🏼♂️
Thank you :-)
Yes I’m trying to chill on the rice haha
Excellent video as usual 👌

I always travel solo, it's the best. When I travelled to Tikal in Guatemala I spent nearly 7 hours at the ruins because it was overcast in the morning and I wasn't getting any good shots, so I retraced my steps as the sun came out and retook photos of all the temples. There's no way I could have done that without annoying someone had I not been alone.
I understand!
Guatemala must have been interesting!
Oh my before the internet travel in Europe must have been great
I would write about that if you have stories and pictures
Another amazing time in the world
@@RetireandGo I have lots of pics.

I understand haha
It’s mostly the combination of meals that makes it look big
I take food back to the hotel to eat later :-)
I want to travel alone too.
I understand
Don’t feel bad about it
You will chat with people as you go
When you are alone you are forced to find your own way.
Thank you for this comment
I think your father would absolutely love that you took this time to travel the way you are
:-)
When you travel solo you are more apt to interact with the locals, with a group you are mostly interacting with the group and maybe standing around a street corner somewhere trying to decide where to go for dinner. When you're alone you will meet people, especially other travelers. It happens.
Good points
Chatting with locals is a great way to find cool spots
I really appreciate this comment

Thank you for this post
I agree, expats take many different paths
Sometimes destructive
Very true
You’re right it is like a superpower. When I travel I notice almost everyone else seems uncomfortable if they’re alone for an even a short amount. I want to know about romance, you’re healthy and young enough that I’m sure available women peak your interest? But also, tons of scams and pay to play there, so how do you manage it? I’m in a similar place myself in life, and enjoy your channel sir
Yeah, I needed some time for me like this
I want only the best for couples traveling of course
Pushups in the morning. Long walks and food to die for as you walk the path.
This is my plan B. The Buddha path.
One more thing to do though. Doctor almost wanted to send me to a specialist because my testosterone is over 1000 and I’m 61yo. So I guess that’s my excuse for needed a woman 🤣
If this plan A fails (Philippines), I’ll head your way (Thailand) and perhaps our paths will cross. 🙏🏽 The path and the food, so amazing.

It depends on the location. Some places are boring and hard to meet people. Other places it's easy as there's lots of other travellers.

I appreciate this very much !
This sounds absolutely interesting!

It is hard to stay "lonely" in Thailand if you stroll the right locations. Loneliness disappears rather quickly when in the company of the friendly ladies of Thailand. Sweet, intellectual, conversational and downright beautiful.
