You're right, this is as tight as you can get and knowing this is a live performance with the highest quality that a studio version couldn't beat is just unbelievable. This is the best live performance of any band I've ever heard. Nothing comes close to this sound, talent, tightness, I could go on and on. LOVE IT!!!

I have to agree. I tried to get into their other stuff, but other than a few of their tracks (also performed at this show, like Way out of Here, Drown with Me, and the title track from this album), I just can't get into their lighter stuff. Which is apparently the majority of the Steven Wilson experience---this is apparently unusually heavy for his writing.
I'd say their best album is Sky Moves Sideways, even though I'm a huge Gavin Harrison fan.
The solo on Shesmovedon is beyond human understanding too…

Yes, Gavin is just other-worldly. I've seen it reported elsewhere that he's TOP FIVE in the world. Just a piece of art watching him work that entire set. Every one of those drums is just a musical 'note' to that genius.

Richard Barbieri's contribution to the unique sonic spaces that define Porcupine Tree is under recognized.
Richard is irreplaceable. His musical sensibilities is about as unique as you could get.
I could not agree more, trully a fundamental piece for their sound and mystique
FWIW, have two of Richard's earlier solo works and have just ordered another one. Plan on the getting the 2021 release later this year. It is great, multi-purpose music, ambient and get things done or listen actively and follow along.
Black Dahlia off the The Incident, written by Richard, is a favourite.

Steven Wilson = overthinks EVERYTHING. Just can't get into a vast majority of his stuff because it's ALL OVER THE PLACE. Unfortunate because he's a talented dude. Stop trying to be like Genesis/Dream Theater and perhaps create your own stuff. There's prog rock, then there's Steven Wilson who tries to incorporate every chord progression and instrument into every song. Just annoying.

The best part about this recording will always be the camera cutting to Richard's reactions to Gavin's fills. I can't help but smile with him every time.

They are all fantastic musicians but Gavin Harrison is definitely the glue that solidifies the music. He is the same with The Pineapple Thief.... absolutely stunning drummer.
I think i find my new idol after Portnoy, his precision and simplicity, maybe ill try to dig all of porcupine tree song sometime later.....

@@ianmuir870 and still he is only one of three drummers there 😂 And then there is the stick-men 😂❤️ So glad I also got to see King Crimson and projects by several (former) members.
Also saw David Cross who was in KC at the start and he played Starless 3 times that night, one of which was the entire song backwards 😂 He was also joined by David Jackson (from VDGG) so I got to see him live as well though sadly not with VDGG - though I am glad I to have seen them as three man babd a couple of times as well.
More on topic: Hope to see Porcupine Tree again next year, been far too long...

This song is a journey. I think my favorite part is where the drummer hits the nastiest fill in the song and the keybordist looks and smiles. They all felt that!

Don't feel bad, I'm 74 and just finding them and this album was like 14 yrs ago.
In my opinion this is the best performance of "Anesthetize" ever. I¨ve listened to it hundred times and I could do it hundred more. Perfection !!
Agreed. The sonic separation that you can discern every instrument yet it all blends beautifully. Nevermind the playing is insane by the band.

I saw Genesis perform Suppers Ready at Forest Hills Tennis Stadium in 1982. For 41 years that had been the pinnacle of my concert life. A close 2nd was ABW&H do Close to the Edge from 3rd row on a beautiful night at The Garden State Arts Center.
But they cannot compare to this song live. I am blessed.

I finally got to see this live for my birthday and I almost feel as though I was reborn with Gavin Harrison's drums as my heartbeat. Total life-changing experience.

I think he smiles because Harrison slightly fucks up, but recovers with a quick couple of taps on a cymbal. Even impeccable drummers can do it. And the drumming on this is incredible. Listen, I could be wrong, but it sounds to me like he loses the time with this fill. Everything else is phenomenal. Drummers! Help. I play guitar but I just know something doesn't sound right here.

I was lucky enough to have a friend who gave me this live DVD. I was hooked on PT after that. I also love the older stuff like Sky Moves Sideways. Steven is always doing something new with His 14 other bands, so I was glad to see that PT was touring again. Wow.

I grew up in the rust belt of the U.S. in the late 70' and early 80's and this song is a masterpiece of my experience at that time.
The term music 'artist' is based on Porcupine Tree!!
Keeping it together, no bum notes, dropping sticks etc, in a live performance can be difficult in a 3 - 4 minute song, but to play perfectly with no hiccups for 17 minutes, wow.

The section from 13:00 is just sublime - been burnt into my brain ever since I heard it about a decade back. Truly iconic. The different vocals actually mimic the motion of waves slowly crashing into one another. So immersive and profound.

Agreed. Did you ever hear the live version of Heartattack in a Layby? I was watching the DVD concert and enjoying the sounds. Then that song came on. I had never heard it before. I stopped and just sat mesmerized by the incredible simplicity and depth.

Gavin the drummer is a beast, with the finesse.
Its not even fair how freaking awesome this performance is.
I listened to/watched all the bands I loved very much live. After a while, I started not being able to discover new bands. I started listening to only the new albums of the bands I loved the most. During my university years, I used to wear headphones and think that I would continue like this until I died. But it turns out that our priorities are changing. When listening to a song or even an album, you need to spend time on it. Just because it's playing in the background while you're busy with something doesn't mean that you've listened to that song. At least for me, that's how it is. If possible, I need to close my eyes and focus only on what I hear. I think you should do the same.
This song is the first thing that comes to mind when I say ‘what should I listen to?’ and it's something that takes the necessity out of discovering new things. It's a 17-minute ‘thing’. And I love every second of it. I've listened to Steven Wilson live, but one of the things I said I would go to with my eyes open if I died would be not being able to listen to this song live. It probably won't happen, but maybe it will remain in my mind as a goal to hold on to to life. I felt like writing this, hoping that I'll edit it in the future. Those who share my feelings, if you see the edit note below, be happy with me, okay?
I know this isn't mine or many other people first time watching this. This is music, a group who can have their audience sit and listen to almost 18 minutes of a song multiple times, must be doing something right!

The ending section is one of the most beautiful pieces of music. The correlation between the lyrical content and the vocals overlapping in waves is so powerful. And I’m not even much of a lyrics guy.
