    So I'm a year late replying to this topic, but I think I have some relative feedback. I purchased a used Glock 42 fairly recently. As we all now know Glock did come out with their single stack 9mm, the 43, but I chose the 42 over the 43 for several reasons.
    Those reasons are: (1) Weight - The 42 is significantly lighter than the 43. (2) Size - The 42 is slightly smaller than the 43, but not too small, which is an issue I have with many pocket pistols. (3) Shot placement - I am not a great shot by any definition, but the recoil on the 42 is so mild that I can empty the magazine in rapid fire without losing my sight picture. I personally can't do that with a 9mm. Recognizing one's limitations, and carrying a gun you can actually shoot is more important than caliber in my opinion.
    So all of those things considered I feel that the 42 was a better choice for me. So to answer the question asked in this video as to whether or not Glock made a mistake with the .380 I'd say absolutely not. There are plenty of people just like me that will prefer it over the 43.

      2 years late on this but this is an excellent comment and an under rated opinion. I like seeing when people come to this conclusion. Many people argue over calibers, but if you've found one that you are confident, comfortable and effective with then you've made the right choice.

    If you shoot the 42 and 43 side by side, you will easily find the 42 more comfortable and more accurate to shoot.

      I agree with more comfortable but not sure about accuracy. For us with bigger hands, the 43 feels better in hand and with an after market extended mag, 43 is more accurate imo. 42 is a smooth shooter for such a small gun though. Get em both 👍

    I LOVE my Glock 42. It is so smooth, very little kick, incredibly accurate out to 75 feet (I haven't had the opportunity to shoot at a longer distance yet) and it's is so easy to conceal. I specifically wanted .380 and was ecstatic when Glock finally came out with the 42. Modern .380 ammo is powerful and I have completely confidence in it.

    I love the little Glock 42, it's a great little pocket gun that fits in your pocket and is highly concealable. The 380 cartridge is a cartridge that keeps evolving; it is proving to be a great self-defense cartridge. This cartridge is great for new shooters or old-timers like myself.Just my opinion

    You nailed it. When we were choosing a smaller carry gun for my wife, I had lined up several subcompact nines and .380s (Shield, LC9, LCP, Kahr P380, Kahr PM9, XDS9, and Glock 42) at a rental range. My wife was indecisive until I had her do some controlled pairs, at which point she packed up the Glock42 and said, "This is my new gun, were done here."
    As they get smaller and lighter in a given shooter and caliber, follow up shots and split times suffer. Shot placement and the ability to deliver fast, accurate follow up shots is much more important then caliber. A wise person recognizes their limitations and gets the gun they can truly "handle."

    Thanx for the vid Sootch. I carry the G42 everyday. I used to have the M&P BODYGUARD .380 but that was so uncomfortable to shoot that I started looking for another pocket pistol.
    The first time I fired a G42 I LOVED IT! I think the reason why it is so shootable is the heavier slide and the recoil spring.

    We are the vocal minority when it comes to the Glock 42 being a .380. The huge amount of Glock 42s sold, proves that. When considering terminal ballistics and actual gun fights, available statistics show the .380 holds its own when compared to 9mm, .40. .45, ect. Shot placement will always be king. Again, statistics prove it. The only way to ensure 100% incapacitation is the destruction of the brain or spine. Anywhere else, it will come down to how determined your attacker is. There are plenty of stories from the battlefield that demonstrates this fact. This is why you fire until the threat no longer exist. I would argue capacity over caliber any day, and all day. I do believe many attach their ego to the caliber they carry. Yet, they have no problem handing a .380 to their Wife, Daughter, Mother, ect. Showing the egotistical hypocrisy many operate under.

      shot placement is key yes but do you think that every shot is 100% dead on what you aim? no offcouse not bigger the caliber is more effective, just like getting poke with a neddle on your hand or a nail offcouse is not going to kill you but sure you rather get poke with a needle, if i can hit 100% i would just carry the smallest cal i can find.

      ***** idk why that comment is directed at me. I agree that a 9mm is a better carry option, unless .380 is the absolute most recoil you can accurately handle. However, the difference in recoil is so negligible, the amount of people that fit in that category is close to zero.

  • @diavel4534
    @diavel4534 8 років тому +29

    +UA-cam Police,
    The .380 IS a 9mm! It's a 9mm Kurz (short).
    .380 = 9x17
    9mm = 9x19
    As far as .380 ball vs .380 hollow points for self defense goes....let's remember, it was the ineffective ball round that gave the .380 it's poor reputation as a man stopper. It's only due to the advancements in .380 hollow point technology that has brought the round back as a decent defense choice.

    I'm convinced that glock came out with the 42 to sell more guns. They want people to buy twice. One in.380 and again in 9mm. If they came out with the 9mm first they wouldn't sell as many .380.

    • @iandavidwolfe
      @iandavidwolfe 9 років тому +1

      I TOTALLY agree. You took the words right out of my keyboard. Glock is in the business of selling guns, and ultimately making as much profit as possible. I knew as soon as they released the 42 as a .380 that it was a marketing ploy. I will pass on the 42 until the single stack 9mm comes out and they get the inevitable bugs worked out.

      I bought an xds 9mm after I heard that the g42 was a .380. It's a little chunkier than the Shield, and bigger than a g42 for sure, but the quality is outstanding. If the 9mm single stack offering from Glock is very close to the dimensions of the g42, then I may consider buying it. If it's too much bigger than the g42, then I'll just stick with my xds.

    Small pocket guns handle better with 380. 9mm is a bit snappy in small pistols. Shoot them side by side in similar size guns. The 380 gives you much faster follow up shots.

    I like the G42 and think it's a good gun and would recommend it even. If you dont mind the extra cost of .380 ammo or you dont shoot alot then the G42 is a great option. But because i shoot alot and with the release of the Ruger Lc9s pro, which is so close in size and only 4oz heavier, I decided to sell my G42 and go with the Ruger. Great points on the G42 sootch00

    .380 = 9x17mm - 9mm = 9x19mm The improvement in ammo have made this caliber relevant! I feel if we rename the .380 cartridge to 9x17mm it would increase in popularity

  • @sptster1200

    The data shows that the .380 is as likely to stop the threat as any other pistol caliber. Pistols are not rifles or shotguns. Like other people have said, shot placement is the key. What the 9mm Luger really has over the .380 is the cost of ammunition.

    380 will still kill. Idk what the big deal is every gun doesn't have to wipe somebody out every time. If a threat was approaching, I think this would back them up just the same as the 43 would. Of course 9mm packs a bigger punch nobody wants to take a 380 bullet to the face or anywhere else for that matter

    Not at all! The G42 is smaller than the G43, but most importantly of all, this gun SHOOTS MUCH BETTER!! Way more accurate follow up shots with less recoil. Plus this could be pocket carried (not the easiest, but doable).

      @Jon Gotti I"m thinking about it yeah, but I've got a CM9 and while I do trust Glock's design more than Kahr's in general. I have put 400+ rounds through my CM9 without a single issue, so I have a reliable one. CM9 is also smaller than the G42 actually while still retaining the 9MM...
      Got me a G43X though :)

    Hey sootch I luv the videos bro, I'm disabled but not in a way that I can't have a CCW because I do, I always carry a Walther PPK in .380acp, I wish I could shoot a 9mm but I'm just l bit too recoil sensitive so I have been wishing for GLOCK to make a .380 for over 10 years and it finally came in the 42, and it's the best gun in the world for ME, not for many but for me it fits like a glove, and with the low mag capacity that I also love because IF THE BAD GUY WILL OVERPOWER ME AND TAKE MY GUN, HE WILL HAVE TO BEAT ME TO DEATH WITH IT BECAUSE IT WILL BE EMPTY! Quote of a great man. Thank you tom s. Colorado

    First I wanna say I love your channel..Just wanted to chime in and say that while the 38 spl has less energy than the 9mm, it's is closer to the 9 than the 380 acp..and when you get to hot + p rounds, the gap closes even more. The 9 and 38 spl are basically ballistic twins and the caliber that is a little closer to a 380 would be the 9mm makarov..38 special loaded with one of it's more powerful + p rounds easily matches a standard 9mil, and at times can match some of the better 9mm rounds. As you know, the 38 can be loaded far heavier than the 380, and even with a heavy weaker 38 bullet at a lower velocity it still penetrates deeper than that off the 380. A round from Buffalo Bore, or Remington Golden Sabre, or another good quality hollow pt out of even the shortest barrel of a 38 would far out perform the 380. Sorry for the story lol. Great video as always.

    Thanks for another great video Sooch. I love it when all the egos crawl out from under their respective rocks with all their opinions. No .380 doesn't pack quite the punch of 9mm, but neither does .38 out of a very short barrel. Many will boast that .380 is ineffective, while autopsy reports will state quite the contrary. History also attributes the assassination of Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand as spark that lead up to World War I. Ferdinand and wife were killed with a .380. Two shots, two kills. Sounds effective to me. The dimensions of the 42 makes for a .380 handgun that's easily handled by someone who might not be able to handle a similar size 9mm. Doesn't sound like a mistake to me.

    Great comparison and analysis on the 42 and its competition....I think you addressed the question the video poses as well as it could be done. Sure, lots of us asked 'why not a nine?'. Well, it'll probably come, but in the meantime when you compare the shootabilty, reliability, and portability of the 42 to pretty much every other choice out there, maybe the 'point' of the 42 is that it just happens to be the best choice in .380 to be had.
    Glock does it again.

Shot placement, trigger discipline and reaction to contact is an ability you should train as much as you can and for personal defense a well trained person will outperform your run of the mill enemy. Always train as if you’re training to outperform the enemy cause someone somewhere us training to get you, outperform them

    Sootch00 the problem with some of the logic presented regarding Glcok providing a single stack 9mm pistol is that S&W has given us the shield, Walther with the PPQ and Springfield provided a single stack .45. I believe that it was all market driven and that they didn't want to compete with those offerings. IMHO.

    I don't understand why they couldn't cram an extra couple rounds in the 42...the witness holes go all they way to the bottom in a g17 mag! Did they forget how they fit the spring in there? the g42 is larger than an LCP, it should hold a couple more rounds if you ask me.

    Glock 42 may have been Glocks best seller for 2014, but I would be willing to bet the Smith&Wesson Shield out sold Glock 42 by leaps and bounds because it fits the bill for what MOST people wanted from Glock and they didn't deliver, a slim, single stack, reliable 9MM.

    I bought the G42 as soon as it came out. I thought it was a good shooter but I did have some FTE/FTF issues. I ended up selling the pistol and will probably get the XDs9 as a replacement. I got rid of all my 380's b/c the price of ammo is ridiculous. If the price was at least equal to 9mm, I would still have my S&W Bodyguard.

      380 ACP is in the same price range as 9mm Luger. It’s just as cheap, or even cheaper than 9mm Luger. Currently 380 ACP is 17¢/ round, & 9mm Luger is 19¢/ round.

    I think the Glock 42 pretty good idea it's a little bit bigger than most 380 pocket pistols which yeah it's bigger but it also gives you a better grip less recoil and 380 is a week round but if you choose the right defensive ammo it's a good setup

    I think the main "problem" with. 380 is the typical microscopic pistols firing them, rather than the round itself. I say this because on a recent range trip, my wife put an entire magazine (8 rds) into the bullseye with her Walther PK 380, and immediately followed with her Smith and Wesson Bodyguard. 380. Out of 6 rounds, she got only 3 even on paper, but none in the black. The miniscule Bodyguard, while easier for her to purse carry, was so difficult to shoot, that the safest place to be was in front of the target! We sold the BG 380, and she went back to carrying the Walther. The weight and size of the Walther are about the same as my Smith and Wesson M&P Shield 9 mm. I'd be interested in seeing a comparison between the Walther PK 380 & the Glock 42. The thing that sold her on Walther was its excellent ergonomics and the incredible ease with which she could rack the slide. But after a while, she began to complain about its weight, so we bought the Smith and Wesson Bodyguard. 380 for her edc. I wonder if the weight and size combination of the Glock 42 mightn't be the best route for her. By the way, we're a couple of old codgers, and she doesn't have a great amount of upper body strength, so being able to easily any rack the slide is important. She did shoot my Smith and Wesson J Frame (442), but didn't like it. Any suggestions? Thanks.

    Dissing the 380. Is only something that happens on the internet, when I tell someone in person honestly i always have the LCP max with me 12+1 of 380 they don’t laugh about it I just enjoy lightweight and low recoil especially in the summer.

    I'll admit I was a little disappointed when Glock released a pocket pistol chambered in .380 until I actually held one in my hands. It literally took just a split second for me to be sold on it and I don't regret picking up the model 42 which I still carry today. When the 43 came out, I tried it and really didn't see the need to buy that one since the 42 was already filling my need for a very concealable pistol. When I go to the range, I shoot my Glock 19 and then fire off a few rounds from my 42 and handle it with ease.

    From a former Glock rep, the release of the 42 first is a business decision. They are selling the crap out of the 42s, our LE dealer still has a long waiting list.
    Once sales slow, the 9mm will be released and they will sell the crap out of those.
    If you release them in reverse or at the same time, do you think they will sell as many guns? Nope.
    Business decision, period.

    I wouldn't mind carrying the 42 as a back-up. Also at 10:06 don't forget about one of the most overlooked .380's IMO which is the Bersa Thunder 380 Plus (please please please do a review on one!). It has a 15 shot double stack mag, and is pretty damn reliable. Maybe it's not the best size for CC, but hey, I know people that carry 1911's and Glock 34's on a regular basis. Good vid as always. Carry on.

    Hello sootch. Glock is also offering this model to countries where military type cartridges are prohibited from civilian use. i was watching a news report in peru where civilians can only own up to a 380 or 38 special. Surprisingly there is a surge in gun ownership in peru and women over there are leading the charge.

    Glock may have waited too late. I was in the market for a single stack 9mm right around the time that the M&P Shield came out with the external safety delete model so I bought one. Between then and now Ruger has come out with the LC9s Pro.... striker fired, no external safety, no magazine safety and no loaded chamber indicator. Now I'm a big Ruger fan and really like the ergos of the Ruger LC9 but this M&P Shield is sweet and I see no need to replace it with anything else. Not even a Glock.

  • @TheSuburban15

    There are a bunch of single-stack 9mm pistols that can be carried in a reasonable-sized pants pocket. Ruger, Kel-Tec, Kahr, and Beretta, to name a few, all make pocket 9s. Glock is not even competing in this market.
    I had a tiny .380. It didn't work properly, and it shot patterns rather than groups, so I sold it. I don't miss it.

    One aspect not brought out is that alot of the .380çal are BB in operation/action. Glock kept the locked breech design that I feel kept the weight down. Thanks very good video and my G42 is up to Mod-3 on the magazine, although I've never had an issue, bought mine in early 2014. Being a new production line, in a new location due to export-laws, one could have expected some line problems. As you mentioned, the NEW CONCEALED CARRY market has exploded politically and most of those were and are not avid shooters, so release of the .380cal when they did was adventitious to get in and stay in the lower caliber market. Again, good video.

    It's all about the bullet. The .380 shoots the same size bullet as the 9mm and if a 95 grain Underwood Xtreme Defender will go through 24 gauge sheet metal, denim, auto glass, and wood and still get 14-20" of penetration leaving a typical Xtreme Defender wound channel (which is bigger than Federal HST out of a 9mm)... then you don't need 9mm anymore. Make a 10 round mag for the Glock 42 and use Underwood and you have a smaller more manageable 9mm. The only downside is the capacity.

    In my opinion, the G42 will be very popular especially amongst small frame people (women and men) with smaller hands. I do not own one, but pondered it last weekend at a local gun show. I already own a S&W Bodyguard and Ruger LC9 for deep concealment situations and love both of those for their own reasons. The G42 seems very concealable and feels exceptional in my medium size hand. I carry Lehigh Defense Maximum Expansion rounds in my 380, 9mm and .45 ACP handguns with maximum confidence. Caliber does matter to me, but with proper ammunition and practice 380 is an effective round. I hope I never have to use it for self defense, but after testing and practicing what I carry, I feel good about it.

  • @pooltuna

    GLOCK showed a lot of marketing savvy in choosing to release the 380 before the 9mm.
    First because women and smaller men want 380, second because if the 9mm were released first many of them would not buy a 380 and third because a lot of people will buy both, which they would not do if a 9mm of the same size were released first.
    The frame on the 9mm does not need to be any larger than the 380, it just has to be a little stronger in a couple of places in order to handle the stresses of recoil, but by no means any more massive.
    Very good review as always, thank-you.

    Up close and personal the .380 will do the job, and it WILL kill your standard perp.
    That being said, the 9mm will do a much better job of ensuring you're safer as the damage being done per round to your attacker will be greater, and expanded.
    I don't think there is too much of a difference between a 9mm and a .45acp, but there is enough of a difference between 9mm and .380acp from what I've read overall.
    Edit: And if Glock doesn't come out with a 9mm that is of similar size to the 42; then they have missed the mark for me. Something to compete with a Kahr CM9/PM9 is what would turn my head.

  • @terrybrown5402

    380 will kill a man just as easy as 9mm. Same with 32 acp. Well placed shots that count are deadly and any shots on target will discourage most attackers.

    Kel Tec's PF9 is (supposedly) even thinner at 0.88" than the 0.94" GLOCK 42. I'm not convinced slide width is the issue. Great vid though, thanks for your work!

    When Kahr came out with the PM9, which was in 2001, I always wondered why the hell doesn’t Glock make something like this! Especially since Glock came out with the Slimline G36 in .45acp in 99/00. Always thought it was some government regulation crap.

    People should be careful for what the wish for.... I own a LCP and trust me running the first 200 rounds through it to get it broken in became painful. There is just no weight to these small guns to help bear the burden of recoil - its all on the shooter. So knowing how .380 in a very small frame feels, I cannot imagine how it will feel to fire 9 mm through the same size frame. While it might make a nice carry gun, it will not be something you want to take to the range very often. As maintaining proficiency on your weapon is one of the cornerstones of proper self defense posture, this is not a small issue. BTW, a Hogue grip improved the feel of the LCP a lot!

    Kahr gets a 9mm in to a gun smaller than the G42 and only a couple ounces heavier. The slide is 0.90" wide - thinner than the G42. Street prices on CM9s are lower than G42s most of the time too. Putting a 9mm in a gun this size would not be a groundbreaking feat of engineering for Glock.

    I just bought a 42 to add to my collection.. I do intend to carry it as I have been carrying my Bersa Thunder 380. 380 ACP is a far better choice in a small gun in my opinion. I am far from recoil shy as I do carry an SP101 357 Magnum 3" also (and is my preferred choice) but just like 38 special, 9 mm loses power with the smaller barrels just like any other cartridge but is still snappy as opposed to the 380.. Is 9 still more powerful? Sure it is but in such a small gun, shot placement increases its importance so might as well go with a much easier handling cartridge. Just my 2 cents...

    • @82luft49
      @82luft49 8 років тому

      +Johnny Vasquez Excellent 2 cents. I own one and find it to be an outstanding firearm. As we all know (or should), self defense against a threat is very up close, and damn near in you face. A.380 round is really a down sized 9mm. It definitely fills the bill to eliminate that threat quickly. Whether it be one shot one kill, or six shots one kill. The idea is to still be standing when its over.
