    This has probably been one of the more consistent award categories. I know any award is subjective, but unlike Best Picture a lot of times, I truly think Visual Effects category gets it totally right. THE MATRIX was such a game changer when it came out.

      Exactly, and that's because it's only voted on by other members of the VFX branch. There are definitely a few of these that could have gone to other films but none of these are bad or wrong choices in any way

      they both know exactly how to use VFX and dont just do everything with CGI (Hobbit doesnt count, they made these movies under a lot of presure)

      Actually, Christopher Nolan prefer to not use CGI or VFX in his movies andonly use it when desperate, he prefer using practical effects

      @@aimankamiri959 Yes, but he also knows when to use VFX. Like in interstellar, the endurance is a physical model but all the backgrounds (of space) are CGI that is then played back on big monitors (like a predecessor to the technology that they used in the mandalorian). Or the bat (I think its called the bat) in tdkr, where they shoot some stuff with that thing on a car or crane and cut between those shots full CG shots, to integrate it more in reality

    'The Matrix' came out the same year as 'Star wars Phantom Menace'. All earlier Star wars films won oscar for visual effect. Everyone thought Star wars would bag it because of their astounding CGI budget and their commanding fan base, even among the academy members. Fortunately they got it right. Visual effects of 'The Matrix' was way ahead of its time.

    These days Avatar has many haters, especially among Marvel fanboys but it's an amazing movie - not just visually. Anyway, I still hate the fact they didn't nominate The Fifth Element (1997) in this category. What a crime. Also, Prometheus should have won in 2012. It's such a fantastic looking movie

    It's actually insane that not one single Marvel movie made this oscar list, its graphics and visual effects through out the 23 movies are all just so phenomenal.

    What makes those movies and the Lord of the Rings trilogy still awesome even decades after their initial releases was really make people feel something. The characters and the settings get into the imaginations and hearts of viewers, and stay with them for the rest of their lives.

    Something that makes Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest stand out even almost twenty years later is the stunning computer generated imagery. Created by Industrial Light and Magic, the physical image of Davy Jones is such great and convincing detail that it is still highlighted as some of the best visual effects work in the fantasy genre.
