For quick shots that caught me off guard: In Supernatural S1E9 there's a shot of invisible person on fire that then transitions to a real actor. While not a crazy shot, it was 2005 and a CW tv show.
One VFX shot that blew my mind was a scene in Under the Skin (2013) where a man dies in an alien void and deflates like a skin balloon. It looks unlike anything I've seen before and definitely deserves a deep dive.
Man I only saw that movie once and don't remember anything else about it, but I still think about that shot. It's so haunting and surreal in a disturbing way.
Honestly if studios were at all connected with the zeitgeist, they'd have someone visit the show before the final product went to theaters or do things like "leaking" certain shots. Think about how the first Deadpool came to be or how different the Sonic movie ended up being.
Here's an old visual effect worth looking at: About 2/3 of the way through the film Yankee Doodle Dandy, there's a 2-3 minute montage that's entirely a one-take visual effects shot. Fantastically well done for the 1940s.
There were a few really stupid CGI mistakes that made the film look like it's breaking physics. To name a couple: 1. When Furiosa rides a motorbike with her mother and a gas tank explodes on her back. It feels like the explosion is not even there. They are completely unaffected by it. 2. When Dementus crashes Furiosa and Praetorian Jack on their escape, he literally stops his 6x6 going from full speed to zero on like 2 car lengths... and his suspension doesn't even budge. Not even an inch. Felt so unnatural.
I haven't even seen the movie yet, mostly because of how awful it looks, but just from the trailers and clips in videos like this one, every car scene looks like bad CGI cause it lacks weight, they say something about using the GTA5 engine for the tornado in fury road, but even in this over 10 year old game the car's physics look more realistic than anything i've seen from Furiosa...
While I still really love this film, I know exactly what you are talking about. I think most of but not all of the weird physics stuff is related to the monster trucks in both films. They are obviously changing the speed at which the monster truck is moving. They are either slowing it down or speeding it up in post. I think to better match the pacing of the surroundings. Either way, a little compression of the suspension on the front end would have gone a long way.
Funny, because your second issue was actually done all in real effects. Watch the behind the scenes on youtube. So yes, that truck did actually stop that quickly, it probably just wasnt going as fast as maybe the scene made you feel they were going.
@@milessamb I hear they actually mo-capped all of the rag dolls and then put them back in. So someone, somewhere actually did the stunt, and then they composted it in. I'd say it was more bad compositing than anything.

The thing I love about VFX artists reacts is I get to deeply appreciate movies I already love. It’s like examining a diamond and discovering a different unique facet of it.
I’m surprised they didn’t talk about the AI face-blending between the actor who played young Furiosa and ATJ. I think it’s one of the most well-done effects in ages, it’s almost subliminal.
That's probably why right ? This one was more addressing criticisms, if they do an "everything right with Furiosa's VFX" episode the face-blending might get a mention. (and I agree BTW, I actually didn't realise it was VFX until afterwards, I just thought it was almost preternaturally good casting)
Because if they complimented the cgi they’d lose fans. The internet already decided furiosa had bad cgi after the first trailer so changing your opinion isn’t allowed. Never seen corridor have a worse opinion, saying anything is bad in this movie when we live all live in the mcu timeline is pretty wild

One of the biggest issues I noticed in Furiosa was speed ramping. There's LOOOOOADS of unnatural looking speed ramping. The drop crane scene at the citadel when the horde first arrives, at the bullet farm fight, the first big war rig fight, and a whole lot more. I think yall should do a full episode review of Furiosa. It's a fantastic film and I absolutely love it, but it does have a fair amount of glaring CGI flaws.
Barry is SUCH a good show. Bill Hader is an encyclopedia of film history and directing techniques and he pulls out all the artsy stops. So happy you took a look at that shot.
I think a really cool premise could be an episode focused on body doubling. There’s so much to pull from, the classics being Eddie Murphy’s Nutty Professor/Norbit, but there’s also the recent Paul Rudd vehicle Living With Yourself, or even The Boys S4 with Starlight! It could be really interesting to see the different approaches to double casting your actor.
Just comparing the two action scenes they showed for Mad Max, one of the big differences I noticed is the camera. That camera rotation around the truck to focus on the second parachute guy felt way too unnatural, my brain immediately went "that's either a drone shot or CG." Add the unnatural shininess and super reflective metal everything is coated in, and it all starts to feel fake.
Wellll how would one realistically film that? Oh they did really film it. Also war rig is shiny because it’s new. And the concept of licking to polish is a thing within that universe
it's I think that effect may actually improve with time - drone shots FEEL fake, even when they are very obviouslly just an FPV drone doing nature photography, but that's because, for a long time, you couldn't so that with a real camera. Now you definitely can do that, it'll probably start feeling less fake in a decade or two once we're not so used to those shots being CG.
Re: the reporters in Godzilla, I actually grew up with and still know many news journalists as well as television sound and camera crew, and tbh that was literally the least unrealistic scene you featured. News crew are basically the journalistic equivalent of hard-core restaurant back-of-house crew. All balls, no sleep, nutritional habits that would make a homeless junkie shudder, and the Anthony-Bourdain-level chaos goblin energy to film live "man on the street" reactions featuring the most absolute bonkers bystander they can lay hands on with absolutely zero censor lag while the producer back in the studio is mainlining Monster Energy drinks mixed with Milk of Magnesia and eyeing his pension vesting date like its a Tinder match. They will stand hip-deep in the ocean during killer hurricanes for a weather update that could just as effectively be done on green-screen. They will drive for 4 hours up butt-pucker-inducing mountain roads to get live establishing shots for an incoming snowmageddon event instead of recycling "footage of heavy snow falling" from every lookalike storm they've filmed in the past three decades. They will get in the faces of powerful people who could have a Russian hitman assigned to them as a personally favor and ask questions that virtually ensure someone somewhere is actively considering it. They will drive INTO active shelling in war zones to ensure Bob and Cindy back home have the most nightmare-inducing video from the recent conflicts to consume with their Chik-Fil-A takeout after a hard day in the paper-shuffling mines. Standing on a rooftop reporting as Godzilla turns the local neighborhood back into gravel (with clearly far more than enough clearance for good shot framing)? Dude...that's just another Tuesday. Once they wrap that shot, it's smokes and Slim Jims all around as they zip back down to street level to give the nearest crackpot his 15 seconds of live global coverage fame, before crashing out in the news van until the studio anchors need another bathroom break. 🤣
Surprised you guys didn’t look at more shots from Furiosa. There was one particular shot at about 1:50:03 where a female biker is walking through the circling riders and you can see her legs actually speed up (as in fast forward) and slow down then speed up again when she gets to the edge of the circle. Almost like the bikers circling is all CGI or a separate shot they comped in and they couldn’t get her stride to walk through everyone without “hitting” anyone so they were forced to speed her up a couple times. But once you see it, you’ll not be able to miss it lol. If anyone owns it or has HBO Max, go take a look and you’ll see it right away. The other things that I kept seeing were the transitions between CGI car and real cars. It kinda felt like the “uncanny valley” but in car form lol. Just the way the suspensions moved and the way they turned, etc etc. But overall a great movie! You kinda nailed it with the seeing the real size of audiences and being able to watch their exact tastes whenever they want.
@@cubertmiso i dont think so. Fury Road is timeless but i think Furiosa will stil be remembered in the franchise. Thunderdome is and that one was a massive pile. only one nobody really remembers is the first movie because they only remember Road Warrior and Thunderdome.

Idk if that fits with Furiosa or not because I mean it’s a spin off about a side character. I had multiple people tell me they weren’t really interested in a Mad Max film without Mad Max in it.

Also I think this might be a slight, intended or not, at the whole... 'media industry collapse' thing going on - a main underlying cause of which being general audience distaste for what the industry is trying to sell them.
But even under those parameters, Furiosa was the first Mad Max movie to open at number one at the box office. These movies have never made a lot of money, they're weird (and wonderful, but very weird). They've gotten more elaborate and expensive to make, but the audience for them hasn't grown very much. A mad max movie should never be expected to sell the amount of tickets that a movie with Wolverine in it would.
Yeah, but there are other, possibly larger factors he left out. Now, they are based in California and I don’t know their politics but at least some of the Crew have stated that their overall goal is to get FX work in Hollywood, and to do that there are certain things you can’t say. This comment might get removed but here I go. I’m referring to the wild success of the Deadpool & Wolverine movie vs the loud outcry that it isn’t diverse enough, compared to the relatively, and in some cases spectacularly dismal box office of some more diverse films and shows. Look at the decline of the Star Trek and Star Wars IPs. Paramount just shut down their TV streaming service at least partly because their Trek shown have drastically lost share. What, if anything, does that say about what the studios think audiences want vs what actual ticket-buying audiences want? I know, this channel is about the technical guts of SPFX. But Niko opened the door on this topic of audience shifts, and we’re definitely seeing such shifts in response to what studios are offering, and there is definitely a political component. Go ahead and yell at me, I have very thick skin, but this is a real thing that is making heads roll at major studios. That is going to impact the lives and jobs of FX workers and the quality of the products we will get in the near future.
The draw back to having guest “reactors”, is that the there seems to be less criticism to bad cgi when its films of directors you have had on the show.
i remember something spielberg said, that he started with tiny budgets and it forced him to be clever and efficient with money. so when he got a big budget, he was able to do way more with that big budget.
Godzilla Minus One was one of the greatest movie experience I ever have is the theater. That atomic breath scene was damn loud in the theater. I literally got goosebumps on my skin. It was so damn powerful. Stunning sound design and one of the best effects I ever seen.
The final segment where you talk about the difference between the grit and color grading of the two movies really is a great explanation as to why fury road is still the superior movie while both are good
FURIOSA cinematography is Simon duggan (I ROBOT, UNDERWORLD EVOLUTION, LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD, 300 RISE OF A EMPIRE, WARCRAFT) that why many people say the Furiosa have a 300/sin city vibe it it)
That color grade side by side really made me go "OH". Once I saw the shiny war rig, I knew it was on purpose. It was beautifully designed and gave you an appreciation for what they could build out of scraps, but I prefer the grunge.
I think it's a deliberate aesthetic choice, because the war rig was actually fairly new. And the overall more "shiny" look also probably reflects the slightly more earlier time frame. I'm sure George Miller could have asked the DP to simply ape the exact visual style and color grading of the first film but decided not to and let him do his own thing. It's a choice I can get behind, even if I too prefer the Fury Road color grading.
@@zxbc1 Exactly. When you look at the mad max films, they are all different in their own way. Same thing will Miller’s filmography, he always tries to never do the same thing twice so it’s pretty much obvious that his choice was deliberate
@zxbc1 I thought that too. That everything in the movie is less gritty (on purpose) because the machines are newer. Still, I didn't like that choice as much. Why are all the salvaged materials the most pristine things ever, this far into the apparent Apocalypse? Still loved the movie.

I haven't watched Furiosa yet but even from the clips here, Mad Max has more shots that bump with the road, are shot from angles and perspectives that feel more grounded or have someone move through the shot to show that someone is seeing this from the same angle you are (Max on the pole moving through the explosion shot), and have camera moves that feel like a camera attached to a car or crane. Really matches the grungy aesthetic of the movie. Where as all Furiosa's shown here are steady shots, smooth and sometimes too fast for real life movements, and not attached to a perspective (the camera sliding between the paragliders). Combined with the lack of dust and rust on everything I can see how audience members would feel detached from the scenes in the movie and that the things in the movie are detached from the world they're in (i.e. fake or cg). Looking again, the explosions in the action sequence they selected are smaller, the sound is less impactful and the spears detonating on top of the truck do no damage. Not even a scorch mark. Meanwhile there's people getting blown off and catching fire.

Furiosa definitely looks more CG and cleaner than Fury Road, but I think Miller was just going for a different vibe. Obviously he could made it all rusty and dusty like Fury Road, but I think because he'd already done that, he wanted something a little different for the prequel, and I still really enjoyed it.
While true, films and film visuals should be judged on their final quality regardless of how they get there. A film that achieved a 9 for the cost of 1 shouldn't somehow eclipse a film that achieved 10 for the cost of 9. The latter's achievement is still worthy of the best praises.

@@zxbc1while you're right about the art production (I'm sure The Room is very cheap) the point is movies are a business. Currently, "lets fix it in post" is a trend that is inflating the cost to make the movie, which cuts into profits. And if you consider the secondary affects that this same trend is putting pressure on the VFX industry for time and lowbidding, you then get a worse product (see the Corridor Crew's recent video for this breakdown). So Minus One is a great lesson on how you have a small budget, a concentration of effort with a director who has a vision and is involed (artur director, i think it's called) and you will have made art. Rather than throwing $400-500 _million_ to produce a **product** that doesn't sell well.
Weirdly, Furiosa felt way more Australian to me. As some who lives in and travelled around a lot in rural and far west NSW, the colour and saturation of Furiosa felt more real. Made me enjoy the film even more as it felt more grounded.
The biggest lesson being taught is that you can make a blockbuster while spending relatively very little. Disney spent $180M on about 8 hrs of The Acolyte and Amazon spent $450M on the first season of Rings of Power, which both flopped hard. How much has Disney lost on Marvel movies? Has to be billions at this point. (How much relief and societal good could be done if this money had be applied to helping ppl??) G-1 schooled Hollywood here, and i hope their Boards of Directors are taking notes.
not really sure "JAPAN" had any vision at all. A group of people that happened to have been Japanese created and made Godzilla the wonderful film and franchise a thing years ago and others have tried to expand and or rethink the ideas. Im American and you certainly cant blame me for the absolute garbage that Hollywood has produced the last 20 years simply because we live in the same country.
No, he's clearly saying there's been a lot of crap that came out of Hollywood. He's just saying you can't correlate between individual and population. He's no more responsible for those bad movies as an individual as all of Japan is responsible for a few good creatives doing something right.
There is a cool explosion scene in season 7 episode 8 of Demon Slayer. I know its all anime but the switch between anime and an explosion that look real is pretty cool.
It's stylized. That's the point. Clearly, George Miller knows how to make a movie that looks like it's mostly practical (personally, I never thought Fury Road looked all that natural to begin with). He decided not to do that with Furiosa.
At 11:00 you can tell it's two separeted shots merged together, because the mountain dissapears behind the trees. (On top of the red car you'd imagine there would be moutain, but you can see sky)
What also needs to be taken into account is that Furiosa is more a fable being told and an earlier tale where the machines and trucks are newer so that explains the look and feel of the movie also.
It doesn't seem to be a lot of time lapsed between the end of Furiosa and the beginning of Fury Road. We even see her sneak with the young girls to the war rig.
@@flembrane5265 The reflection on the "new" rig is almost completely static despite the truck being in motion on a changing landscape, and it makes the whole thing look like a 90s CGI render of a shiny metal sphere in a landscape. It just screams "This isn't real" despite the fact that they seemed to have a full sized reflective rig on the green screen soundstage.
No, the look and feel of the movie are cheap because corners were cut. Miller worked on Fury Road for over two decades, meticulously crafting every action scene, car, and costume. Furiosa was slapped together.
2:19 the term is “impact frame” and it’s the key technique used in ALL of anime fights in every single fight scenes or explosion scenes you can find. Naruto game used it, gacha game’s ultimates used it, et cetera
Not for nothing but the technique which impact frames employ is actually almost as old as cinema. Filmmakers understood how the human eye adjusts to light conditions and realized they had a captive audience ingesting their lighting choices in a dark box. Leading into darkness with a bright frame (either smash cut or quick transition) or vice versa maximizes the resulting desired effect. Most often, the technique was embraced in horror films but it could also be seen in WWII films - such as in shots of artillery, which started as actual footage (light was intense and so apertures were reduced resulting in black screen before flash) and then became an added effect along with a white frame. George Lucas adopted some that technique to emulate the WWII reference footage in Star Wars. Anyway, GM1 uses a blend of both the anime aesthetic and the live action film techniques, especially given its own relationship to WWII films. TLDR: This isn’t merely the use of the anime impact frame technique.
Speaking of 'one shot' , I re-watched 'Golden Child' recently, a great silly 80's fantasy comedy. There is a scene where a pop can is stop motion animated into an origami person that does a dance. I was super impressed how well it held up over the years.
I haven't seen the movie, but from the clips you showed, the "CG-ness" comes from the physics in the animation. Ex. The spear being thrown from the parasailer to the tanker. The spear just goes straight there. There is no arc, no weight, no acceleration change. Part of the grittiness of Fury Road (and Godzilla for that matter) is the nicely animated weight of the movement and physics.
That shot featured in the clip looks completely fine to me. The spear should not have 'arced" much because it's thrown extremely fast and traveled a very short distance. I feel like you felt a difference simply because it was compared in a context of "Fury Road effects looked better" and your brain went to all places to look for supporting evidence.
@@zxbc1look up projectile motion. Even bullets, in ideal conditions, follow a parabolic path, which is why range finding is crucial to snipers. If they had a harpoon or crossboow, so it was very fast over 10m, that might have sold it. But look at the javilins in the olympics for why OP is talking about. Your brain knows this if you've been exposed to it and it is "uncanny valley" physics
@@morganseppy5180 Take a second look at the spear scene. It is literally real and it looks super real. I don't know why anyone would pick issue with it, it is the least problematic of all the shots. It also does have a small arc and isn't at all completely straight.
@@awdsqe123 Thanks, some people aren't for real, lol. I think you have to search very hard to find any real bad CGI in Furiosa. To me it looked pretty good most of the time. There are of course a few shots, that have some uncanniness to it, where the motion doesn't quite fit, but so does Fury Road.
Cool single shots: In Multiplicity, where Michael Keaton plays a series of clones. He tosses a beer to himself and there was some sort of story about him miraculously matching the shot on the first try.
One thing you didn't mention is that the BARRY shot is almost (if not just actually) a nodal pan. The push you mention could just be a clever scaling and slight plate shift. It's an extremely slight parallax shift and that would make the tracking vastly easier if the shot could be constructed almost entirely executed as a pure nodal pan. It makes the planning and execution a hell of a lot easier.
I appreciate the practical effects in Godzilla Minus One, like moving the camera instead of the ship set, than the big CGI nuke breath scene. I wanna be sold that everything is practical, even when it isn't.
The camera work of Fury Road also feels more restricted. Like someone was actually there shooting it with a real piece of equipment 100% of the time. I think the shots in Furiosa feel more stylized and sometimes break your suspension of disbelief.
Exactly, that shot where they follow the van that drops down the bullet farm doesn't work because they probably generated the whole scene since the van is at the edge of the pit, and the camera just floats awkwardly following the van, without the grounded physicality of a drone or a crane
I've watched Blood Red Sky while on a plane and it was definetely the best way to watch that movie. Next time I'm travelling, I will be watching Snakes on a Plane for sure
I'm rewatching Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, and I know you like to look at fire and explosions, the explosion of the fuel compound near the end seems like something you'd like.

You should compare the original "Twister" film with the new "Twisters" because I just recently watched both. They are both well made but you can definitely tell differences in the effects. Or even with other tornado movies like "Into the Storm" which has a great scene inside a tornado
Could you guys take a look at Journey to the Center of the Earth and its sequel? it's got some pretty interesting shots for the time that it was made some good some bad.
You guys should do a “cinematographer’s react” and react to amazing frames from movies. Like talk about why a specific shot looks good because color grading, camera movement, lens choice, etc. I think that would be interesting to watch

for me the biggest difference was the music The background music was so freaking boring in Furiosa, I couldn't even finish the movie. Fury Road has great background music, very re-watchable...like Mission Impossible FALLOUT
It's a combination of three things IMO: - Textures and lighting. They talked about this. - Camera. The camera does a lot of unrealistic movements that feel incredibly scripted, reminding us of its existence and CG nature. A real camera couldn't be in those positions doing those movements, and a real videographer wouldn't be filming events in ways like that. - Physics. The physics in Furiosa feel much more scripted and much less simulated. You can see it all over; it feels like there are "beats" that they wanted the object to hit, and they just scripted the objects to be on those beats rather than simulated naturally.

I see the entire film of Furiosa as a fairy tale / myth being told to the children at the saved capital by one of the history men more specifically the one at the start and follows them throughout the story. So that’s why things seem a little more glossy, bright, far fetched and brighter and more chrome than fury road is. At then when the furiosa story ends and goes into the fury road story it’s now the real world and we’re following reliable storytelling… at least that’s how I see it.. and I think that kinda bumps up the coolness of the furiosa myth
I'm fine with this explanation and Furiosa just having more fully CG shots in general. I think the guys didn't pick the right scenes to compare. The early shot of the character on CG fire and the wide shots of Dementus gang driving up to a cliff look straight up comical. I'm not a snob at all and it took me out of the movie hard-core. The guys went super easy on Furiosa which is fine, they wanted a more direct comparison, but there are some wide angle shots that are abysmal CG.
I (somewhat) agree. But I feel like the style isn't over the top enough to fit that bill. Some parts feel too real to be a "fairy tale". I feel like doing the whole movie in the style of the tempest of "Fury Road" would have been much better. Because right now, it just feel (at least to me) like it's in the uncanny valley : not not enough to be really a style, and too much to just be subtile.
4:00 as a BSc in Physics it's less relativity and more Eulerian and Lagrangian frameworks. Eulerian: fixed relative to a position on the Earth's surface (think being on the ground watching a ballon float away in the sky). Lagrangian: moves with an object with the position constantly changing (think being on the ballon and watching the Earth float away from you).
Another thing with furiosa vs fury road you mentioned the shiny cars, they're harder to comp in and do real effects alongside them because it reflects more light so they made it much harder for themselves.
I don't understand why everyone gave furiosa so much grief because I just watched this morning and that movie's phenomenal. I'm a pretty tough critic when it comes to movies usually and lately a lot of stuff has been true crap but if you have any doubts you should definitely give it a chance
@giannisksanthopoulos4300 I do agree some of it could definitely be better but it seemed like a rush job to me. Even watching it for a second time I found myself forgetting about how bad the CGI is because the story is so well done. It's even done in a different tone than the first movie because it had the saturation turned way up in the spectacle was just jaw dropping and honestly feel that furiosa had a stronger script.
The people giving it flack watched the trailer and nothing else. Or some CAM somewhere. Watched it 3 times in the theatres, it's incredible. And better than 90% of what gets released nowadays. GO check ANY reaction on youtube, tell me if you can find one that didn't like it.

for fury road, shooting was done in namibia where you get a clear desert where as furiosa was shot in australia but the desert was not as clear with bits of greenery and shrubs that they had to remove so thats why it looks different to fury road
Cinematography is a why Furiosa's lighting looks so flat vs. Fury Road's, they both use CGI but one being Fury Road implements it better and uses real world photography and VFX blended together well to sell it instead of doing it mostly in a studio environment and then adding VFX after.
The first attempt to make "Mad Max: Fury Road" dates back to 1997. Director George Miller began working on a new installment of the "Mad Max" series shortly after the success of the original trilogy. Pre-production for the film started around 1998, but the project faced a series of delays over the years due to a variety of reasons, including: Funding issues Casting challenges The 9/11 attacks in 2001, which led to concerns about international filming and shipping Weather disruptions during planned shoots in 2003 in Australia, leading to a halt in production. The film went through various stages of development over the years, and after numerous setbacks, it finally entered production in 2012 and was released in 2015, almost two decades after its initial conception. The vehicles designed for the film were stored in Sydney, Australia, where they sat unused for several years. The original production, which was meant to take place in the early 2000s, had to be postponed due to various issues like geopolitical events and weather disruptions. During this time, the vehicles that had been custom-built for the movie remained in storage until filming eventually resumed in 2012. This delay added to the used, worn and aged aethstetic of the vehicles in a way other productions do not have time for.
I actually worked in a pub where they filmed Fury Road in Australia. Would often have the movie crew come in to eat and drink they'd tell me about how they blew up so many cars that day etc. As a life long fan of the Mad Max movies it was something I looked forward to every shift.
Fury Road looks like they used CG to enhance the scenes. Furiosa looks like there is nothing but CG. Even the in camera stuff looks fake. As you said it is too clean to be believable.
I don’t know if this shot has visual effects in it, but it is one of the most impressive shots I’ve ever seen and I have no idea how they did it: the dream sequence oner in the movie The Banishment.
As for the beach shot, I actually use to live right next to that beach. That's Magu Rock in the background, right next to Oxnard and Camarillo. You can see the line in the tree where the mountain just kind of cuts off, definitely 2 plates comped together.
GTA 4 to 6 use the RAGE engine. Euphoria is the simulation by NaturalMotion that is incorporated into RAGE. Euphoria is for games and Endorphin is the film version of that simulation software.

If I'm not mistaken, the 'cleaner' look in Furiosa was deliberate. Even in the color grading due to it being a prequel. Even the cars are cleaner, Furiosa herself is younger.
I remember reading somewhere that George Miller said he wanted to cast someone younger to play Furiosa, as he didn't want to just digitally de-age Charlize Theron, which is why Anya Taylor-Joy was cast.
I saw Fury Road 3 times in the theater. The second time was because the first time I sat too close to the screen, the third time was because I found out how much of the effects were practical and wanted to see it again with that in mind.
Someone else brought this up, but you guys need to check out Supernatural. You could easily do an entire episode on just that show. Not too much that's insanely mind-blowing, but it's a CW tv show from 2005 with some great effects
I saw both Furiosa and Fury Road and enjoyed them both. They are very different movies and both great in their own right. Furiosa is a better story which probably makes it a better movie, but it's impossible to deny the immediate and visceral experience that Fury Road was. Furiosa might possibly be a better movie, but it will eventually fade away. Fury Road is a unique piece of cinema that will be on lists for the next century.
Very few, if any, people cared about the plot of Fury Road. I watched it 3 times in theaters and have no idea what happened in the movie. These crazy dudes drove these crazy vehicles and there was a storm and a bunch of stuff blew up and it was AWEsome. It shouldn't be in any way surprising that people were going to want the same experience from the sequel. If you weren't going to be able to create at least close to the same experience as the first movie, don't make it. If this version of Furiosa that we got is what the original vision for the movie was , I would argue it was a bad idea from conception with little chance of success and they would have been way better off taking this same group of people with the same budget and making any other movie. There is a reason why franchises try and outdo the original, sometimes to the point of insanity. Now that you have a bar set, if you fail to reach that bar, you will disappoint, even if its still good. People hated the Godfather 3 but its not that bad. It just doesn't hold up to 2 of the best movies of all time.
Um, Furiosa came before Fury Road so of course the world is a little less dirty. That's how time works. How is that not even mentioned as a reasoning behind the look? This was easily conveyed on screen with both movies.
Godzilla minus one felt like I was watching a stage play. Everything felt like it was on a set and it took me out of the film. But knowing how much it cost, the time frame to get it completed and how many people that worked on it I can get over it.
100% this. I'm so confused by the praise of the VFX because EVERY shot looked fake to me. The film was still great and for the low budget with which they were able to pull off what they did is amazing but the none of the shots really convinced me it wasn't a very well executed episode of power rangers.
Episode idea: I'd love to see a deep dive/interview for Hundreds of Beavers! From the perspective of budget/DIY effects, I feel like there is a lot there to talk about, even if the effects themselves are basic.
One thing I like the most about Godzilla Minus One aside from the highly detailed Godzilla itself, is the way Goji moved like a giant, slow and massive. It's like it had a big weight that struggles the Goji to pull out of gravity, so you can see the sense of scale while not just being big. To compare with the Monsterverse even though the monsters are a lot bigger than the Minus One, they dont sell that Scale where they're moving like an MMA athletes on the ring, plus some lack of people's screen going side by side with the monsters makes it even harder to see how big they are (especially in Godzilla x Kong The New Empire)

For quick shots that caught me off guard: In Supernatural S1E9 there's a shot of invisible person on fire that then transitions to a real actor. While not a crazy shot, it was 2005 and a CW tv show.

One VFX shot that blew my mind was a scene in Under the Skin (2013) where a man dies in an alien void and deflates like a skin balloon. It looks unlike anything I've seen before and definitely deserves a deep dive.
Man I only saw that movie once and don't remember anything else about it, but I still think about that shot. It's so haunting and surreal in a disturbing way.

Honestly if studios were at all connected with the zeitgeist, they'd have someone visit the show before the final product went to theaters or do things like "leaking" certain shots. Think about how the first Deadpool came to be or how different the Sonic movie ended up being.

There were a few really stupid CGI mistakes that made the film look like it's breaking physics. To name a couple:
1. When Furiosa rides a motorbike with her mother and a gas tank explodes on her back. It feels like the explosion is not even there. They are completely unaffected by it.
2. When Dementus crashes Furiosa and Praetorian Jack on their escape, he literally stops his 6x6 going from full speed to zero on like 2 car lengths... and his suspension doesn't even budge. Not even an inch. Felt so unnatural.
I haven't even seen the movie yet, mostly because of how awful it looks, but just from the trailers and clips in videos like this one, every car scene looks like bad CGI cause it lacks weight, they say something about using the GTA5 engine for the tornado in fury road, but even in this over 10 year old game the car's physics look more realistic than anything i've seen from Furiosa...
While I still really love this film, I know exactly what you are talking about. I think most of but not all of the weird physics stuff is related to the monster trucks in both films. They are obviously changing the speed at which the monster truck is moving. They are either slowing it down or speeding it up in post. I think to better match the pacing of the surroundings. Either way, a little compression of the suspension on the front end would have gone a long way.
I loved the movie, but every ragdoll body took me out of it. Everyone that fell off of a vehicle looked just like a video game character.
Funny, because your second issue was actually done all in real effects. Watch the behind the scenes on youtube. So yes, that truck did actually stop that quickly, it probably just wasnt going as fast as maybe the scene made you feel they were going.

The thing I love about VFX artists reacts is I get to deeply appreciate movies I already love. It’s like examining a diamond and discovering a different unique facet of it.
I’m surprised they didn’t talk about the AI face-blending between the actor who played young Furiosa and ATJ. I think it’s one of the most well-done effects in ages, it’s almost subliminal.
That's probably why right ? This one was more addressing criticisms, if they do an "everything right with Furiosa's VFX" episode the face-blending might get a mention.

One of the biggest issues I noticed in Furiosa was speed ramping.
There's LOOOOOADS of unnatural looking speed ramping.
The drop crane scene at the citadel when the horde first arrives, at the bullet farm fight, the first big war rig fight, and a whole lot more.
I think yall should do a full episode review of Furiosa.
It's a fantastic film and I absolutely love it, but it does have a fair amount of glaring CGI flaws.

I think a really cool premise could be an episode focused on body doubling. There’s so much to pull from, the classics being Eddie Murphy’s Nutty Professor/Norbit, but there’s also the recent Paul Rudd vehicle Living With Yourself, or even The Boys S4 with Starlight! It could be really interesting to see the different approaches to double casting your actor.
Just comparing the two action scenes they showed for Mad Max, one of the big differences I noticed is the camera. That camera rotation around the truck to focus on the second parachute guy felt way too unnatural, my brain immediately went "that's either a drone shot or CG." Add the unnatural shininess and super reflective metal everything is coated in, and it all starts to feel fake.

it's I think that effect may actually improve with time - drone shots FEEL fake, even when they are very obviouslly just an FPV drone doing nature photography, but that's because, for a long time, you couldn't so that with a real camera. Now you definitely can do that, it'll probably start feeling less fake in a decade or two once we're not so used to those shots being CG.
It wasn't a drone shot. It was a crane on a truck. It's in the behind the scenes footage
Actually, the only CG things in that shot are the actual parachutes themselves, and the background landscape - the stunts are totally real!
Re: the reporters in Godzilla, I actually grew up with and still know many news journalists as well as television sound and camera crew, and tbh that was literally the least unrealistic scene you featured. News crew are basically the journalistic equivalent of hard-core restaurant back-of-house crew. All balls, no sleep, nutritional habits that would make a homeless junkie shudder, and the Anthony-Bourdain-level chaos goblin energy to film live "man on the street" reactions featuring the most absolute bonkers bystander they can lay hands on with absolutely zero censor lag while the producer back in the studio is mainlining Monster Energy drinks mixed with Milk of Magnesia and eyeing his pension vesting date like its a Tinder match.
They will stand hip-deep in the ocean during killer hurricanes for a weather update that could just as effectively be done on green-screen. They will drive for 4 hours up butt-pucker-inducing mountain roads to get live establishing shots for an incoming snowmageddon event instead of recycling "footage of heavy snow falling" from every lookalike storm they've filmed in the past three decades. They will get in the faces of powerful people who could have a Russian hitman assigned to them as a personally favor and ask questions that virtually ensure someone somewhere is actively considering it. They will drive INTO active shelling in war zones to ensure Bob and Cindy back home have the most nightmare-inducing video from the recent conflicts to consume with their Chik-Fil-A takeout after a hard day in the paper-shuffling mines.
Standing on a rooftop reporting as Godzilla turns the local neighborhood back into gravel (with clearly far more than enough clearance for good shot framing)? Dude...that's just another Tuesday. Once they wrap that shot, it's smokes and Slim Jims all around as they zip back down to street level to give the nearest crackpot his 15 seconds of live global coverage fame, before crashing out in the news van until the studio anchors need another bathroom break. 🤣

Surprised you guys didn’t look at more shots from Furiosa. There was one particular shot at about 1:50:03 where a female biker is walking through the circling riders and you can see her legs actually speed up (as in fast forward) and slow down then speed up again when she gets to the edge of the circle. Almost like the bikers circling is all CGI or a separate shot they comped in and they couldn’t get her stride to walk through everyone without “hitting” anyone so they were forced to speed her up a couple times. But once you see it, you’ll not be able to miss it lol. If anyone owns it or has HBO Max, go take a look and you’ll see it right away.
The other things that I kept seeing were the transitions between CGI car and real cars. It kinda felt like the “uncanny valley” but in car form lol. Just the way the suspensions moved and the way they turned, etc etc. But overall a great movie! You kinda nailed it with the seeing the real size of audiences and being able to watch their exact tastes whenever they want.
people will remember fury road, and forget furiosa in a year for a good reason.

Also I think this might be a slight, intended or not, at the whole... 'media industry collapse' thing going on - a main underlying cause of which being general audience distaste for what the industry is trying to sell them.
But even under those parameters, Furiosa was the first Mad Max movie to open at number one at the box office. These movies have never made a lot of money, they're weird (and wonderful, but very weird).
They've gotten more elaborate and expensive to make, but the audience for them hasn't grown very much. A mad max movie should never be expected to sell the amount of tickets that a movie with Wolverine in it would.

Now, they are based in California and I don’t know their politics but at least some of the Crew have stated that their overall goal is to get FX work in Hollywood, and to do that there are certain things you can’t say. This comment might get removed but here I go.
I’m referring to the wild success of the Deadpool & Wolverine movie vs the loud outcry that it isn’t diverse enough, compared to the relatively, and in some cases spectacularly dismal box office of some more diverse films and shows. Look at the decline of the Star Trek and Star Wars IPs. Paramount just shut down their TV streaming service at least partly because their Trek shown have drastically lost share.
What, if anything, does that say about what the studios think audiences want vs what actual ticket-buying audiences want?
I know, this channel is about the technical guts of SPFX. But Niko opened the door on this topic of audience shifts, and we’re definitely seeing such shifts in response to what studios are offering, and there is definitely a political component.
Go ahead and yell at me, I have very thick skin, but this is a real thing that is making heads roll at major studios. That is going to impact the lives and jobs of FX workers and the quality of the products we will get in the near future.

The draw back to having guest “reactors”, is that the there seems to be less criticism to bad cgi when its films of directors you have had on the show.
i remember something spielberg said, that he started with tiny budgets and it forced him to be clever and efficient with money. so when he got a big budget, he was able to do way more with that big budget.

Godzilla Minus One was one of the greatest movie experience I ever have is the theater. That atomic breath scene was damn loud in the theater. I literally got goosebumps on my skin. It was so damn powerful. Stunning sound design and one of the best effects I ever seen.

That color grade side by side really made me go "OH".
Once I saw the shiny war rig, I knew it was on purpose. It was beautifully designed and gave you an appreciation for what they could build out of scraps, but I prefer the grunge.
I think it's a deliberate aesthetic choice, because the war rig was actually fairly new. And the overall more "shiny" look also probably reflects the slightly more earlier time frame. I'm sure George Miller could have asked the DP to simply ape the exact visual style and color grading of the first film but decided not to and let him do his own thing. It's a choice I can get behind, even if I too prefer the Fury Road color grading.

@zxbc1 I thought that too. That everything in the movie is less gritty (on purpose) because the machines are newer. Still, I didn't like that choice as much. Why are all the salvaged materials the most pristine things ever, this far into the apparent Apocalypse? Still loved the movie.

yeah, the rust and dust IS the reason the entire movie is offputting. its like simulating a human face without pores... it will look fake.
I haven't watched Furiosa yet but even from the clips here, Mad Max has more shots that bump with the road, are shot from angles and perspectives that feel more grounded or have someone move through the shot to show that someone is seeing this from the same angle you are (Max on the pole moving through the explosion shot), and have camera moves that feel like a camera attached to a car or crane. Really matches the grungy aesthetic of the movie. Where as all Furiosa's shown here are steady shots, smooth and sometimes too fast for real life movements, and not attached to a perspective (the camera sliding between the paragliders). Combined with the lack of dust and rust on everything I can see how audience members would feel detached from the scenes in the movie and that the things in the movie are detached from the world they're in (i.e. fake or cg).
Looking again, the explosions in the action sequence they selected are smaller, the sound is less impactful and the spears detonating on top of the truck do no damage. Not even a scorch mark. Meanwhile there's people getting blown off and catching fire.

Furiosa definitely looks more CG and cleaner than Fury Road, but I think Miller was just going for a different vibe. Obviously he could made it all rusty and dusty like Fury Road, but I think because he'd already done that, he wanted something a little different for the prequel, and I still really enjoyed it.
The journalists on a rooftop scene is a direct remake of a scene from the original Godzilla.
As is the Godzilla biting the train scene.
Godzilla Minus One needs to be studied for how amazing they made a film look with such a low budget. This is how you do it, Hollywood
While true, films and film visuals should be judged on their final quality regardless of how they get there. A film that achieved a 9 for the cost of 1 shouldn't somehow eclipse a film that achieved 10 for the cost of 9. The latter's achievement is still worthy of the best praises.
It's what happens if you plan ahead instead of your mantra being "we'll fix it in post lawl".

Currently, "lets fix it in post" is a trend that is inflating the cost to make the movie, which cuts into profits. And if you consider the secondary affects that this same trend is putting pressure on the VFX industry for time and lowbidding, you then get a worse product (see the Corridor Crew's recent video for this breakdown).
So Minus One is a great lesson on how you have a small budget, a concentration of effort with a director who has a vision and is involed (artur director, i think it's called) and you will have made art.
Rather than throwing $400-500 _million_ to produce a **product** that doesn't sell well.
Fury Road has visual effects that feel stylized whereas Furiosa feels less sylized and I think that makes the CG elements stand out more

Weirdly, Furiosa felt way more Australian to me. As some who lives in and travelled around a lot in rural and far west NSW, the colour and saturation of Furiosa felt more real. Made me enjoy the film even more as it felt more grounded.

The biggest lesson being taught is that you can make a blockbuster while spending relatively very little. Disney spent $180M on about 8 hrs of The Acolyte and Amazon spent $450M on the first season of Rings of Power, which both flopped hard. How much has Disney lost on Marvel movies? Has to be billions at this point. (How much relief and societal good could be done if this money had be applied to helping ppl??)

A group of people that happened to have been Japanese created and made Godzilla the wonderful film and franchise a thing years ago and others have tried to expand and or rethink the ideas. There is a cool explosion scene in season 7 episode 8 of Demon Slayer. I know its all anime but the switch between anime and an explosion that look real is pretty cool.
I watched twisters on a Movie Theater while visiting Oklahoma. The feeling is on another level.
Furiosa may not have more CG than Fury Road, but it looks like it has more CG than Fury Road. And that hurts the aesthetic of the film overall.

My biggest gripe with it was pacing pre-citadel and time skipping the war. Some sound issues as well with some narration bits.
It's stylized. That's the point. Clearly, George Miller knows how to make a movie that looks like it's mostly practical (personally, I never thought Fury Road looked all that natural to begin with). He decided not to do that with Furiosa.

What also needs to be taken into account is that Furiosa is more a fable being told and an earlier tale where the machines and trucks are newer so that explains the look and feel of the movie also.
There was a behind the scenes clip where they talked about the war rig being made shiner in contrast with fury road's war rig.
It doesn't seem to be a lot of time lapsed between the end of Furiosa and the beginning of Fury Road. We even see her sneak with the young girls to the war rig.
The idea of the post apocalyptic machines is that they have been pieced together from parts. Go back to the original Mad Max movies and have a look.
@@flembrane5265 The reflection on the "new" rig is almost completely static despite the truck being in motion on a changing landscape, and it makes the whole thing look like a 90s CGI render of a shiny metal sphere in a landscape. It just screams "This isn't real" despite the fact that they seemed to have a full sized reflective rig on the green screen soundstage.
No, the look and feel of the movie are cheap because corners were cut. Miller worked on Fury Road for over two decades, meticulously crafting every action scene, car, and costume. Furiosa was slapped together.
2:19 the term is “impact frame” and it’s the key technique used in ALL of anime fights in every single fight scenes or explosion scenes you can find. Naruto game used it, gacha game’s ultimates used it, et cetera
Not for nothing but the technique which impact frames employ is actually almost as old as cinema.
Filmmakers understood how the human eye adjusts to light conditions and realized they had a captive audience ingesting their lighting choices in a dark box. Leading into darkness with a bright frame (either smash cut or quick transition) or vice versa maximizes the resulting desired effect.
Most often, the technique was embraced in horror films but it could also be seen in WWII films - such as in shots of artillery, which started as actual footage (light was intense and so apertures were reduced resulting in black screen before flash) and then became an added effect along with a white frame. George Lucas adopted some that technique to emulate the WWII reference footage in Star Wars.
Anyway, GM1 uses a blend of both the anime aesthetic and the live action film techniques, especially given its own relationship to WWII films.
TLDR: This isn’t merely the use of the anime impact frame technique.

Speaking of 'one shot' , I re-watched 'Golden Child' recently, a great silly 80's fantasy comedy. There is a scene where a pop can is stop motion animated into an origami person that does a dance. I was super impressed how well it held up over the years.

I haven't seen the movie, but from the clips you showed, the "CG-ness" comes from the physics in the animation. Ex. The spear being thrown from the parasailer to the tanker. The spear just goes straight there. There is no arc, no weight, no acceleration change. Part of the grittiness of Fury Road (and Godzilla for that matter) is the nicely animated weight of the movement and physics.
That shot featured in the clip looks completely fine to me. The spear should not have 'arced" much because it's thrown extremely fast and traveled a very short distance. I feel like you felt a difference simply because it was compared in a context of "Fury Road effects looked better" and your brain went to all places to look for supporting evidence.

@@morganseppy5180 Take a second look at the spear scene. It is literally real and it looks super real. I don't know why anyone would pick issue with it, it is the least problematic of all the shots. It also does have a small arc and isn't at all completely straight.
@@awdsqe123 Thanks, some people aren't for real, lol. I think you have to search very hard to find any real bad CGI in Furiosa. To me it looked pretty good most of the time. There are of course a few shots, that have some uncanniness to it, where the motion doesn't quite fit, but so does Fury Road.

Cool single shots: In Multiplicity, where Michael Keaton plays a series of clones. He tosses a beer to himself and there was some sort of story about him miraculously matching the shot on the first try.
One thing you didn't mention is that the BARRY shot is almost (if not just actually) a nodal pan. The push you mention could just be a clever scaling and slight plate shift. It's an extremely slight parallax shift and that would make the tracking vastly easier if the shot could be constructed almost entirely executed as a pure nodal pan. It makes the planning and execution a hell of a lot easier.

I appreciate the practical effects in Godzilla Minus One, like moving the camera instead of the ship set, than the big CGI nuke breath scene. I wanna be sold that everything is practical, even when it isn't.
The camera work of Fury Road also feels more restricted. Like someone was actually there shooting it with a real piece of equipment 100% of the time. I think the shots in Furiosa feel more stylized and sometimes break your suspension of disbelief.
Exactly, that shot where they follow the van that drops down the bullet farm doesn't work because they probably generated the whole scene since the van is at the edge of the pit, and the camera just floats awkwardly following the van, without the grounded physicality of a drone or a crane
I've watched Blood Red Sky while on a plane and it was definetely the best way to watch that movie.

You should compare the original "Twister" film with the new "Twisters" because I just recently watched both. They are both well made but you can definitely tell differences in the effects. Or even with other tornado movies like "Into the Storm" which has a great scene inside a tornado

Godzilla minus one blew me away and it’s the only Godzilla movie to ever make me cry at the end.
You guys should do a “cinematographer’s react” and react to amazing frames from movies. Like talk about why a specific shot looks good because color grading, camera movement, lens choice, etc.

It's a combination of three things IMO:
- Textures and lighting. They talked about this.
- Camera. The camera does a lot of unrealistic movements that feel incredibly scripted, reminding us of its existence and CG nature. A real camera couldn't be in those positions doing those movements, and a real videographer wouldn't be filming events in ways like that.
- Physics. The physics in Furiosa feel much more scripted and much less simulated. You can see it all over; it feels like there are "beats" that they wanted the object to hit, and they just scripted the objects to be on those beats rather than simulated naturally.

I see the entire film of Furiosa as a fairy tale / myth being told to the children at the saved capital by one of the history men more specifically the one at the start and follows them throughout the story. So that’s why things seem a little more glossy, bright, far fetched and brighter and more chrome than fury road is. At then when the furiosa story ends and goes into the fury road story it’s now the real world and we’re following reliable storytelling… at least that’s how I see it.. and I think that kinda bumps up the coolness of the furiosa myth

I think the guys didn't pick the right scenes to compare. The early shot of the character on CG fire and the wide shots of Dementus gang driving up to a cliff look straight up comical.
I'm not a snob at all and it took me out of the movie hard-core.
The guys went super easy on Furiosa which is fine, they wanted a more direct comparison, but there are some wide angle shots that are abysmal CG.
Exactly this: Furiosa is about myth, and the telling of stories. That came up in the film itself, and its more fabulous aspect is baked in.
I (somewhat) agree. But I feel like the style isn't over the top enough to fit that bill. Some parts feel too real to be a "fairy tale". I feel like doing the whole movie in the style of the tempest of "Fury Road" would have been much better.
Because right now, it just feel (at least to me) like it's in the uncanny valley : not not enough to be really a style, and too much to just be subtile.
When they looked at the scene where Furiosa's mother is killed, I actually got a 300 vibe from it.
4:00 as a BSc in Physics it's less relativity and more Eulerian and Lagrangian frameworks.
Eulerian: fixed relative to a position on the Earth's surface (think being on the ground watching a ballon float away in the sky).
Lagrangian: moves with an object with the position constantly changing (think being on the ballon and watching the Earth float away from you).
Another thing with furiosa vs fury road you mentioned the shiny cars, they're harder to comp in and do real effects alongside them because it reflects more light so they made it much harder for themselves.
I don't understand why everyone gave furiosa so much grief because I just watched this morning and that movie's phenomenal. I'm a pretty tough critic when it comes to movies usually and lately a lot of stuff has been true crap but if you have any doubts you should definitely give it a chance

@giannisksanthopoulos4300 I do agree some of it could definitely be better but it seemed like a rush job to me. Even watching it for a second time I found myself forgetting about how bad the CGI is because the story is so well done. It's even done in a different tone than the first movie because it had the saturation turned way up in the spectacle was just jaw dropping and honestly feel that furiosa had a stronger script.
The people giving it flack watched the trailer and nothing else. Or some CAM somewhere. Watched it 3 times in the theatres, it's incredible. And better than 90% of what gets released nowadays. GO check ANY reaction on youtube, tell me if you can find one that didn't like it.

Furiosa is amazing in Black and Chrome version. Most of the CGI issues are less noticeable here (if at all)
I think the Barry shot could have been partly shot on a black sand beach, in full sunlight they look exactly like an old asphalt road
for fury road, shooting was done in namibia where you get a clear desert where as furiosa was shot in australia but the desert was not as clear with bits of greenery and shrubs that they had to remove so thats why it looks different to fury road

Cinematography is a why Furiosa's lighting looks so flat vs. Fury Road's, they both use CGI but one being Fury Road implements it better and uses real world photography and VFX blended together well to sell it instead of doing it mostly in a studio environment and then adding VFX after.

I actually worked in a pub where they filmed Fury Road in Australia. Would often have the movie crew come in to eat and drink they'd tell me about how they blew up so many cars that day etc. As a life long fan of the Mad Max movies it was something I looked forward to every shift.

I don’t know if this shot has visual effects in it, but it is one of the most impressive shots I’ve ever seen and I have no idea how they did it: the dream sequence oner in the movie The Banishment.
As for the beach shot, I actually use to live right next to that beach. That's Magu Rock in the background, right next to Oxnard and Camarillo. You can see the line in the tree where the mountain just kind of cuts off, definitely 2 plates comped together.
Fury Road is a much better film in every aspect...

If I'm not mistaken, the 'cleaner' look in Furiosa was deliberate. Even in the color grading due to it being a prequel. Even the cars are cleaner, Furiosa herself is younger.
I remember reading somewhere that George Miller said he wanted to cast someone younger to play Furiosa, as he didn't want to just digitally de-age Charlize Theron, which is why Anya Taylor-Joy was cast.
In that environment though... It takes 1 or 2 days for things to look 20 years old. So it makes no sense that things are less dirty 😅
I saw Fury Road 3 times in the theater. The second time was because the first time I sat too close to the screen, the third time was because I found out how much of the effects were practical and wanted to see it again with that in mind.
Someone else brought this up, but you guys need to check out Supernatural. You could easily do an entire episode on just that show. Not too much that's insanely mind-blowing, but it's a CW tv show from 2005 with some great effects
I saw both Furiosa and Fury Road and enjoyed them both. They are very different movies and both great in their own right. Furiosa is a better story which probably makes it a better movie, but it's impossible to deny the immediate and visceral experience that Fury Road was. Furiosa might possibly be a better movie, but it will eventually fade away. Fury Road is a unique piece of cinema that will be on lists for the next century.
Very few, if any, people cared about the plot of Fury Road. I watched it 3 times in theaters and have no idea what happened in the movie. These crazy dudes drove these crazy vehicles and there was a storm and a bunch of stuff blew up and it was AWEsome. It shouldn't be in any way surprising that people were going to want the same experience from the sequel. If you weren't going to be able to create at least close to the same experience as the first movie, don't make it. If this version of Furiosa that we got is what the original vision for the movie was , I would argue it was a bad idea from conception with little chance of success and they would have been way better off taking this same group of people with the same budget and making any other movie.
There is a reason why franchises try and outdo the original, sometimes to the point of insanity. Now that you have a bar set, if you fail to reach that bar, you will disappoint, even if its still good. People hated the Godfather 3 but its not that bad. It just doesn't hold up to 2 of the best movies of all time.

Um, Furiosa came before Fury Road so of course the world is a little less dirty. That's how time works. How is that not even mentioned as a reasoning behind the look? This was easily conveyed on screen with both movies.
Godzilla minus one felt like I was watching a stage play. Everything felt like it was on a set and it took me out of the film. But knowing how much it cost, the time frame to get it completed and how many people that worked on it I can get over it.
100% this. I'm so confused by the praise of the VFX because EVERY shot looked fake to me. The film was still great and for the low budget with which they were able to pull off what they did is amazing but the none of the shots really convinced me it wasn't a very well executed episode of power rangers.

Episode idea: I'd love to see a deep dive/interview for Hundreds of Beavers! From the perspective of budget/DIY effects, I feel like there is a lot there to talk about, even if the effects themselves are basic.
One thing I like the most about Godzilla Minus One aside from the highly detailed Godzilla itself, is the way Goji moved like a giant, slow and massive. It's like it had a big weight that struggles the Goji to pull out of gravity, so you can see the sense of scale while not just being big. To compare with the Monsterverse even though the monsters are a lot bigger than the Minus One, they dont sell that Scale where they're moving like an MMA athletes on the ring, plus some lack of people's screen going side by side with the monsters makes it even harder to see how big they are (especially in Godzilla x Kong The New Empire)
