Here’s a quick little smooth groove for the instrumental used at the halfway point in today’s episode.
El Chicano’s cover of Gerald Wilson’s song, paying homage to the Mexican bullfighter Jose Ramon Tirado, is at its peak of #28 today. This will be El Chicano’s biggest hit.
Contestants for the 1970 dance contest are in-studio today along with a lot of new faces. The only regulars I could spot are Andy and Charlotte (who danced on the show from ’69 into the early 70’s) at 1:29.
This song hit No. 1 here in L.A. in June of 1970. 😁☝️
My father had bought a console stereo back in 1970, and the Viva Tirado El Chicano album special pressing came with it. I played it as much as i could back then, even though i was into heavier music, it has always held a special place in my heart, i still listen to this great album, to bad they didn't follow up with a similar work. Would've liked for ted Templeman to have produced a couple albums with them . Viva Tirado ❤
Reminds me of one of my families parties circa 1970 in Queens NY. I was 5 but already into music....Latin beats yeah! with funk n jazz. : ) Takes me back also to Road trips in 1970.
A mosaic of cultural musical influences that defined an entire generation the first 30 years of rock and roll which the likes will never be seen again.
Amazing thought.
So true, come to think of it,
The estetic of the 1970 is very different that 60s. Incredible the differences.
First time I ever seen Chicanos on American bandstand, must be the 70s
Great times , remember this track so well,, Thank you !!
I had this 45 on the black KAPP label !! Parts 1 and 2. Bought it NEW ! This instrumental was "right on" !!!
Also had the 45 on the black Kapp Records label as well. Classic that was first issued on the LA-based Gordo Records, founded by the late Eddie Davis (who also issued Cannibal & the Headhunters' "Land Of A Thousand Dances" on his Rampart label). Kapp/MCA picked up the single and signed El Chicano.
You’re always a wealth of information Kevin. Did you say you used to be a DJ?
@@YCDTI Yes. In Rochester and Central NY (Ithaca, Cortland) in the 1980's.
Love it!!!❤😄🎵👍
Hell's bells I'm late! I wasn't feeling the love for this, not because of the music, but the dancing. Would've loved to see a little chachacha. Some slow hip rolls. A man's warm hand in the center of his lady's back leading the motion. Yeh....that's what this song needed. Hot in here.....ain't it 😉
Hi AARON & thanks for this upload....Wow ....1970...Early 70s AB footage SUPER rare! DC was quite the pioneer to feature a little "brown eyed soul" on his show....Dick Clark was super cool to even play "El Watusi" by Ray Barretta back in '64. :---)
Hi Mario, I just listened to El Watusi for the first time and I like it. Kinda reminds me of “Hey Leroy....”. I’m guessing that was played on AB after the move to Hollywood, although I’d love to see what the Philly kids would’ve done with it. It ain’t the Poni-tails, lol.
@mrob75 The correct spelling is Ray Barretto not Ray Barretta.
Another great video, thank you.
Un bon oldies instrumental tout en nonchalance 👍💖
Je suis d'accord. C'est une belle chanson facile. Je vous remercie
Great tune! Cha Cha time! LOL
I can't recall the last time I heard this song. Even the oldies stations rarely if ever play it. Maybe K-Earth 101 still plays it? I haven't listened to that station in years. As for the ad for the FBI TV show, whatever happened to it? I have never once seen that show in reruns.
This is a cha cha.💃🏽💃🏽💃🏽🕺🏽🕺🏽🕺🏽
Fun fact: This was a re-make of an old jazz tune in the 60’s by Gerald Wilson, which is on You Tube.
Gayle Lecus I didn’t know that!
Yep, it’s true. Wilson recorded it first..
Thanks for that little tidbit of information!
oldies geek you’re welcomed!!
Sounds like I'm at a LA Dodgers game in the 70s
Viva YouCanDanceToit!!!! Viva El Chicano!!!
I like the young lady at 0:46.. she reminds me a little of Jane Fonda/Judy Carne(Laugh-In)😀
Damn never knew you could dance to this song,I've been doing it all wrong just kicking back smoking a joint with one ✋ down my pants🤔😂🤡
From hippie music to Groove music o_o
who is the doll at 1:10 ? I used to have a crush on her.
Yes I agree completely. You had a crush on her in 1970? I know her first name is Kathy and she was a semi-regular. Do you remember her last name? She was probably 18 at the time right?
i dont know her last name, but i hope she knows she had a following back in the day.@@bobbyfield6395
