This has to be hands down one of the most iconic dance sequences in a Hollywood movie. It may seem simple but very fascinating. I can now see why Pulp Fiction is referenced in movies and in every conversation about movies.
Little bit of trivia, it's thought that the dance scene is based on the dance in Jean-Luc Godard's "Bande à part", which is a fun movie and definitely worth the watch.
Travolta should've won the Oscar that year. The dancing is fine but he's also showing his discomfort and worry that Marcellus will kill him if he steps over the line with Mia. Lots of tension and so funny too.
It is so crazy, that yesterday we had a family party, and my mom came to me to request a song. In the next moment my Mom and Dad hit this whole choreography flawlessly. It was one of the coolest things they've ever done.
Love how the dance is basically the subtext of their whole evening. Mia is young and pretty brash with her advances, constantly trying to pull Vincent in with moves that are charming, but forward; Vince, on the other hand, is closed off and a bit curt, but he clearly knows what his doing. Over the course of the dance, the two push and pull with each other, getting close at times, though ultimately drifting apart before it fades, each dancing their own, near each other.
In an interview sometime after the movie was released, Uma said that she was terrified to do that scene with John because of his awesome talent as a dancer.
They both played their roles well. Both were good (for average schlubs); she, a little better than he. Neither looked professional or even coached. Travolta looked exactly like a middle-aged thug trying his best to recreate the moves from his youth while looking cool and tough.
I just love how Uma Thurman and John Travolta acted this scene. Mia dances with the reckless abandon of somebody who just wants to have fun. Vincent is slightly robotic and reserved, probably worrying about what Marcellus would think if he was watching. It’s just brilliant cinema.
Mia wants Vincent to F her, that's probably why Rocky Horror got tossed out a window because she flirted with him and probably asked for the foot massage.
This scene always manages to make me crack a smile, two people living in uncertain times, high as fuck jamming out on the dance floor like a bunch of goons for the whole world to witness, it really emphasizes that no matter how crazy the circumstances in your life may be that there's always a reason to let loose and boogie, the humility of it all along with the chemistry between the two on-screen just reels you in, its a great movie with great actors who do such a good job together that it just looks like an honest genuine interaction.

This is such a fun, iconic scene. I can’t tell you how it electrified the crowd in the theater. I saw this at the Edwards Tustin Marketplace on opening Friday night back in 1994. All the buzz was about how this was Travolta’s comeback (it was) and the audience loved the dialogue and scenes so far. It was like no other movie we’ve ever seen, really. Then this scene hits, and there was Travolta dancing on the big screen again. The crowd clapped, whistled and I made it a point to look around me at all the faces illuminated by the screen and it was nothing but huge, wide, perfect smiles…men, especially women, etc. for some reason, this genuine, joyous moment of movie-watching never left me and, nearly 30 years later I think back to that night when I see this scene. When the movie ended and I walked out into the night air, everybody was talking and laughing, quoting lines, discussing scenes, etc. it hit everyone upside the head like two bricks. This is one of my favorite moviegoing memories ever. You couldn’t fake/manufacture the buzz/excitement this scene generated. A nice little break from the weirdness, violence and rough language, so it was like everyone just exhaled and enjoyed themselves fully for three minutes. Corny, I know. But its 100% true. I’ve always felt lucky to have seen this thing n opening night with a Southern California audience.
You made me want to be there. I wanted you to keep going lol. I remember that feeling in the theater during Jurassic Park, Lion King and Titanic. I was a kid when Pulp Fiction was on video.
Remember seeing this with my Dad in '94, I was only 14...but after the movie Dad told me, "You know it was cool seeing John Travolta dance on screen again. A few years before you were born, he was bigger than the world when he did Saturday Night Fever." At the time it was only like 17 years earlier, but looking back on it now, movies meant a lot more to people, and seeing one of the big stars resurge to the top of Hollywood was a remarkable story, and Pulp Fiction relaunched Travolta's career on screen.
Yes, absolutely. There were more than a few raised eyebrows when he was cast in a Tarantino film. He was, in effect, a has-been-inseparable from the deeply unfashionable disco era that made his name. Then overnight he was cool again. Pulp Fiction posters were in every student house I visited in the mid 90s.
People who weren't alive back then just can't understand how huge it was to see John Travolta dance up on the big screen again. People who would've NEVER watched a movie like this went just to watch this one scene, and they left happy!
The greatest dance scene in film history!! The chemistry between Uma Thurman and John Travolta was electrifying! Nobody else could have played these roles! Pulp Fiction is such a human story with very human interactions and I believe it is a masterpiece!
Are you serious? Its good but no where near the greatest dance scene in film history . Not even close. Ever hear of Free Astaire Ginger Rodgers. Heck Even Travolta himself had better dance scenes in other movies.
Earlier in this scene Mia talks about how she loves uncomfortable silences and that when you found someone you can share a silence with you found the right person. I think this scene foreshadows their relationship in which they both found each other but can’t follow through due to Marcelo . Also watch the last scene where Mia tells her pilot joke right before they end their date night (pilot) and never have a second date (tv show) again it’s beautiful
All I said was Catch Up, Ketchup . At the end of Uma and Travoltas date she tells him the joke from a TV Pilot she was in but never became a series.. Is that what you're talking about?
I know there was some debate about using Travolta in this movie, but I honestly cannot imagine anyone else doing this scene justice. All the conflicting emotions written on his face are captivating.
@@euphoriaggaminghd Michael Madsen would be more believable as a hired killer, but he's not as likable. He's very believable as a psycho in Reservoir Dogs.
The names of the dances they threw in together flawlessly in a "twist contest, " were the twist, the swim, the jerk, the monkey, and the cowboy . One of the coolest scenes of dance in any movie any time. Great job! Those two were fire right there!
When I was a kid, I watched a lot of Jimmy Neutron. There was an episode that referenced this scene, when Jimmy has a party while his parents and out and him and Betty Quinlan dance on the table and do the dance move that Vincent does at 2:18. When I saw Pulp Fiction for the first time, I almost dropped dead when I realized that the cartoon I watched as a child made reference to this film.
+PsychicRaccoon The cartoon people might have been referencing "Pulp Fiction", but Tarantino himself included the move as a reference to the 1960s "Batman" TV show. Look up "the Batusi".
@@michaelcoleman8996 rewatched the movie and iv changed my mind, didnt really understand it the first time. I still think jules and vincents adventures and bruce williss chapters are better tho
It is amazing how natural and confident Travolta appears on the dance floor. Most of us would look silly and uncoordinated if we tried these moves, but he always seems so at ease-in his element. Whether it be Grease, Michael, Look who's talking, SNF, Pulp Fiction, The Experts, or Urban Cowboy-John is the dance king of his generation. Kudos to Tarantino for bringing back some of the older movie stars and the great music we all know and love !
My ex and I didn't have any overlap in music tastes, so didn't have a song. We decided to do this dance at our wedding, and had a bunch of people jump in at the same time when the scene ended. It was hella fun to do and to rehearse, I remember all of that quite fondly.
from the comments ....... ahah .. that's life, some sing and dance like demoniacs, others cry and writhe from illness, we live, we chew bread! ... God grant us all health and prudence!
No, man. Travolta was a trained dancer and wanted to become a professional dancer before his knee got injured, after which he went into acting. Tarantino even claimed the extras in the dance scene broke into applause after the take because they thought Travolta's moves were so good.
Are we not gonna talk about how Chuck Berry was a lifelong sex offender and pervert? I guess it's more important to get an immaculate vibe going than discuss real things 🤷
from the comments ....... ahah .. that's life, some sing and dance like demoniacs, others cry and writhe from illness, we live, we chew bread! ... God grant us all health and prudence!
The best twist ever! A great tune, great dancing, a classic. Thurman and Travolta are mesmerizing. I’ve watched the video over and over through the years.
Mia dancing and shamelessly being silly yet passionate about her moves. That's when you know you got a special woman that takes you out of your comfort zone
One of the best movies and probably one of the best dance scenes in all the movies. Loved it. Saw behind the scenes clip, this was pure magic and Tarantino was dancing on the sidelines as they filmed it. Loved this movie and this scene.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Galatians 5:22-23 💙✨
The WAY he looks at her while dancing, not starting continuously, but giving those intense glances...like " i want you, but i am cool here also, just like this...dancing" Classic
Did you see Travolta's dance scene in the movie "Michael"? It's a tough call, but I'll go with Michael, just like the other ladies on the dance floor😂 #IYKYK
in that same year in 1994, John Travolta was the first actor offered the role to play forrest gump but he turned it down and went to pulp fiction. What kind of actor especially someone like John Travolta could turn down a role like that... but imagine what this film would have been like without him
@@kennikuhlmann-clark9860 why would Tom Hanks play vincent vega ? he had nothing to do with it, he weren't even in top 3 list to play forrest gump. John Travolta was selected to play forrest gump thats why i pointed it out. and whats wrong with john travolta playing forrest gump ? I never give a crap about who plays the role its the script and editing I look at and any actor would have gave the same performance. John Travolta can do anything
The most iconic dance scene in history from pulp fiction, many people thought this was done in one take but the scene took 4 hrs to film as Tarantino is a perfectionist and during an interview, it was said the whole cast was transfixed watching them xxx
With no hard feelings intended, but this is the kind of dance almost every Indian can do, and almost all of us do this during baraat procession in Indian weddings, therefore I fail to see how this is an iconic performance, song indeed is amazing, but all of the Indian classical dances are way more iconic than this particular performance, may be because West is developing it's culture now after getting civilized modernly, whereas east is way more ahead of west in terms of culture and they are getting modernised now, may be it's just my personal view, but yeah this is how I see it.
@@pranavjoshi2920 I believe you are looking at this scene the wrong way. What makes this performance iconic is not exactly the dance itself. You can most definitely find a better dancing performance elsewhere. What I would like you to remember is that this scene comes from a movie that does not in the slightest prioritize itself with the things that you have mentioned. The actors in this scene are not attempting to display their "dancing prowess," nor present their culture. They are simply following the script they must follow as actors. It is only within context of the film that this particular scene attains its iconic reputation. Which is why I implore you to someday find the time and go to see this masterpiece of a film so you can personally understand the true significance of this dancing scene. TL;DR Your implications on culutural development in the east and west are interesting, to say the least, but I don't believe they have any relation to the meaning of this scene.
I've always wondered what goes on inside a great movie directors' head like Quentin Tarantino when he creates a scene like this one. I mean this could easily be a very insignificant part of the movie, just two people dancing, right? But it isn't insignificant. Far from it. Tarantino has managed to turn this simple scene into one of the most iconic scenes in movie history and the chemistry between Mia and Vincent is just so great to watch. Everything about this scene is absolutely brilliant.

John Travolta and Uma Thurman gave an outstanding performance in this movie. It is sad that John never won an Oscar. He is a brilliant actor and he can rock from the 70s.
He doesn't get an Oscar because he never licks anybody's ass in Hollywood. Now we all know what needs to be done to get an oscar.and John Travolta doesn't need it.
Perfect music?🤬 according to the soundtrack details this was released in the 60s after Chuck Berry's child sex trafficking conviction. He would go on to re-offend by recording 📹 🎥 women 👩 and girls 👧 👩👧 in the ladies 🚺 bathroom 🚻 without their permission. He had been in prison twice at this point 👉 for sex crimes. The salesman did a great a great job making people believe this dance is liked by more people than it actually is. After many years learning, this dance, even though it’s good, it’s not as good as they claim it to be. It lacks emotion understandable for the public who has not been influenced to like it, I’d say it needs salt to enhance its flavor. Some other dances are good on their own.
Actually, they lost the competition (to a talented Puerto Rican couple, no doubt), but ended up stealing the trophy, the theft actually making it into the news cycle despite the presence of bigger stories, such as a boxer getting killed in the boxing ring, as well as the report of a gangland murder in a Valley apartment complex, where nobody heard the thirty-six total rounds fired.

@Rooster yes she is.
It's so oddly adorable, I love it
Yes there is. It's her.
Now that sounds like a cool dad there 👍🏼

The way they dance, they are the perfect duo. Great offset

@@robertkajdanovic6090 lol, yeah, there are several who could pull that off- but it is a good scene.

Are you serious? Its good but no where near the greatest dance scene in film history . Not even close. Ever hear of Free Astaire Ginger Rodgers. Heck Even Travolta himself had better dance scenes in other movies.
@@glennwatson3313 you’re right- i think the irrational exuberance is more due to the amazing film than the dancing scene itself ;)

He is professional. Of course he knows what he is doing.
Saturday night fever, john dominates the dance floor.❤
Travolta has a professional choreographer and 2 weeks of rehearsing this.
BTW: Tarantino was recorded on a video discussing how he scripted that scene.
I’m fairly certain he was a professional dancer before he started acting
My ex and I didn't have any overlap in music tastes, so didn't have a song. We decided to do this dance at our wedding, and had a bunch of people jump in at the same time when the scene ended. It was hella fun to do and to rehearse, I remember all of that quite fondly.
Sorry to hear it's in the past but all I took from this is that a lack of commonality in music taste gonna be a problem in marriage

No, man. Travolta was a trained dancer and wanted to become a professional dancer before his knee got injured, after which he went into acting. Tarantino even claimed the extras in the dance scene broke into applause after the take because they thought Travolta's moves were so good.

The most iconic dance scene in history from pulp fiction, many people thought this was done in one take but the scene took 4 hrs to film as Tarantino is a perfectionist and during an interview, it was said the whole cast was transfixed watching them xxx
and now I am more interested in a documentary about the filming of the dance, than the dance itself.
@@pranavjoshi2920 whats your definition of culture in this case?
@@pranavjoshi2920 it's iconic because it's cheesy not because it's a good dance, lol.
TL;DR
Your implications on culutural development in the east and west are interesting, to say the least, but I don't believe they have any relation to the meaning of this scene.

1978 - Grease

The salesman did a great a great job making people believe this dance is liked by more people than it actually is. After many years learning, this dance, even though it’s good, it’s not as good as they claim it to be.
It lacks emotion understandable for the public who has not been influenced to like it, I’d say it needs salt to enhance its flavor. Some other dances are good on their own.
