- The dancers are looking super groovy here as the guys replace neckties with scarf ties and ascots, dancing to the Temptations #1 hit.
(sorry about the video quality here (and other videos). It’s just great that these episodes exist at all. Just imagine it’s 1969 and you have a black and white TV with a bad antenna 😃)
Airdate: Oct. 11, 1969
(audio enhanced and synced)
I do not get bored of watching these videos and enjoying young people dancing and having fun. It was a great time.
The girl on the platform with the black skirt and vest is blowing my mind!!
a psychedelic summer of '69....The Temp's new music reflected that whole era and feel..Scarf ties really dressed up any casual shirt. Thanks for the clip!
I was 15 years old in 1969, and this AB feels like another lifetime ago. Where did the time go? Thank you for these oldies, but goodies!! xo
Although, I was a 5 year old kindergarten kid, I remember this song and also the album cover for this. :)
I think it's great that today's grandkids can see what their grandparents looked like and did 50 years ago as teenagers. We, from that era, did not and do not have that pleasure.
Why on earth would anyone 👎 this clip? You obviously don’t have good taste in good Motown 💝
The little silky blond haired girl at 28 seconds, beautiful. I was 11 years old in 1969 and I well remember how different people were, the girls and guys had a lot more morals, and respect for others and themselves. I miss the days of innocence.
Times were changing ... wide ties and wide lapels now required! Great Temptations tune.
dancer don I just LOVE the fashion changes in this era. It seems like teens today are wearing the same basic thing they were wearing 2 to 3 years ago, but back then what a difference over 2 to 3 years! You (and all teens) must have been updating your wardrobe constantly to keep up with the times? I love your look here by the way. Just too cool!
Love these 1969 American Bandstand videos! Thanks for posting it Aaron. Just like all your videos I gave it a another "Like".
ABdancers thank you!
Did the styles really change, or was a dress code relaxed to reflect the times?
shyphyre, actually it was both.
They went to work on this Temptation song. Boy if I was there, I would have been working out too!
Can you imagine how surreal it must have been for Dick Clark to Interview various Temptations Lineups as well as former members like Eddie Kendricks, David Ruffin & Dennis Edwards (RIP).
laminage yes, there were many great lineups for the “Temps”. IMO the original is the best but if they had to replace David Ruffin, Dennis Edward was an excellent choice. Thanks for reminding me.....RIP Dennis Edwards.
No worries! In Australia they are revered as in The UK. I would have loved for Melvin Franklin to have been a Narrarator or something. He had an amazing Bass Voice. Also this year marks the 35th Anniversary of Ron Tyson's Debut which makes him the Longest Running Replacement Temptation.
Oh here's a funny story. When they did the Dance Sequence in The Big Chill where they were cleaning up after Dinner, they weren't listening to The Music they "pretended" to listen to "Ain't To Proud To Beg" then the put the Music in afterwards. If you can check out this Scene, look at The Anthology Album that Harold (Kevin Kline) is holding in his hand. David Ruffin is "Singing" but The Lineup is different. It is Melvin Franklin, Dennis Edwards, Damon Cole & Richard Street (RIP). Only Otis Williams is the only surviving Member on The Cover Album.
Dick had a similar experience when he interviewed The Supremes in 1976 when they promoted "I'm Gonna Let My Heart Do The Walking". Mary Wilson was the only member he knew.
@@Centervillejim Yes. Berry Gordy was such a SOB! After the Final Concert on January 15th 1970 Nine Years To The Day The "Original" Supremes signed with Tamla Enterprises, he said to Mary Wilson he didn't want Jean Terrell he wanted to replace her with Syreeta Wright (Ex Mrs. Stevie Wonder #1). Mary said "No!" and they became a Shell of their former selves. Without Motown to promote them, etc their career pretty much went down the drain the same way The Miracles sans Smokey did. Their biggest humiliation was in 1977 when they were Booed off of the stage. Mary tried so hard to continue as a Solo Artist but she had to face the fact she didn't have the "Goods" like Diana Ross did.
This is so funkadelic. : D I have an original copy of the album ''Puzzle People'' which includes this #1 ''I Can't Get Next To You'' Look at the fashions and the dancing. How quick it all change from a few years back (1967) LOVE IT. Dancer Don with sideburns and his belted jacket looks so cool and his( new moves) I was 4 when this aired and looking at old home movies from 1969 many of my relatives were dancing just like this and the long hair, short shirts. I vividly remember 1969.
It's very interesting that it's more common to see philly era and disco 70's era videos of American bandstand, then it is to see clips an episode of the show from the 64-73?
50 years ago, makes one pause and think. Especially if you are that age group!
Have you noticed the diversity of some of the dancers? Dick Clark was adamant about allowing African Americans to join the dancers on AB. Also, have you noticed some of the mixed race couples in the '67 clips? Again, AB was in the forefront of having teens of all races to come on to the show to reflect the music that was being showcased on AB. What a time. And this song reflects that time perfectly. I was 14 and so into IT.
I agree, it killed buddy Deanes show but Clark was a great promoter of what later became R#B...
Those kids look happy!
When the Temptations were America’s #1 group
Soooooooo cooooooool
I wonder if fashion and makeup was different in Philadelphia? I graduated in 1969 and went to college that year. I do it remember anyone wearing SO much eye makeup. Even a glance through my high school yearbook does not show that trend.

I look at these Kids and I wonder if any of the fellows got sent to
Vietnam. Their collaboration with Norman Whitfield resulted in 21 Top Ten R & B Hits 11 of which went to Number One including this one.
SAME SHOW WHEN THEY DO THE TOP 10 THE #1 IS SUGAR SUGAR BY THE ARCHIE'S !! COOL !@
60s ...maravelous.!!😎💃💥
Was I ever that young?
This was also the Song that got them The Grammy for Best R & B Peformance Duo or Group and a couple of years ago they got a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Sadly enough, only Otis was present to receive his Award, while the Children of Eddie Kendricks, David Ruffin, Paul Williams and Melvin Franklin received theirs. I'm not sure if Dennis got one becuase they usually give it to the "original" lineup.
Better Time. Simpler Era.. No Worries. No Issues.
Other than having to go to Vietnam...
I was in nam in 69
the dancers were workin'' it..especially the young lady on the platform...she was dancing lively and workin' that platform!
Angelique Collins Pretty much the only one really working it out. This is great to watch but a lot of those people couldn’t dance. Dick Clark was a better dancer.
Great dancing !!!
The good ‘ok days of great dance music !!!
@@a.b.sproductionsllc who is angelique collins?
@@RAYFORDHENDERSON-dc2op Probably was the person I commented on 6 years ago but she probably shut down her account, even though that was a character on “Dark Shadows.”
I believe this song really paved the way for the disco sound.
I must say, between you & fellow UA-camr ABdancers, these clips from '69 are KILLER!!! I just didn't think I'd ever see clips from this era. Everytime there was a Bandstand special, Dick hardly ever used clips from '69 to '74 using the different variations of this particular studio set. PLEASE POST MORE from the early 70s AB so we can see evolution of this set, the placement of the "AB" logo, and the song choices Dick made for the kids to dance to. EXCELLENT JOB MY FRIEND!!!
You bet! Thank you for the nice comment Thruthealcove KC. While I’m more into 60’s shows, I’ve searched and found there is very little out there from between 1970-1974 for some reason. If ABdancers or I (we collaborate) find shows/clips/dancers from then, we’ll be sure and post it. Thanks for watching!
I just watched some great things on your channel. Please keep up the great work!
Some episodes of "American Bandstand" from the 1950's, 1960's, and early 1970's no longer exist for one of two reasons. The first reason is that the tapes got lost by ABC. The second reason is that ABC recorded other programs over the tapes to save money, because videotape was expensive during those years. I always thought that Dick Clark owned every episode, but I was wrong.
Hey, if you're referring to my channel, then thanks so much for checking me out! I don't make videos anymore really & I don't think I will again. It was so much fun doing them though.
Right, unfortunately that was common practice back then, including record companies discarding master tapes and multi tracks, not thinking about evolution in the changing of the music medium (ie: CD, mp3, etc.). It's a shame, but oh well. I'm just glad to be able to see what's left! So glad every episode of Soul Train exists!
Gee...when this episode of AB aired on Saturday, October 11, 1969, yours truly was almost 9 and a half months old!(The World Series began on that date as well) 😃
Almost nine months for me. And the year of the Miracle Mets!
What a great time to be alive and dancing. Expressed so well by the brunette @1.49. The chick in the long sleeve white blouse and long black vest could really dance. And such a beauty. When chicks didn't need anything but a can of hair spray and some mascara. Wonder where she is now? I wonder??
America was getting great and music played a big roll! I miss those times. We got to get back on track. We can all be happy if we make it our goal as Humans.
The white version of Soul Train
no...there were whites and blacks on AB...
13 dislikes why because white dancing with blacks dancing with whites we didn't car the color of someone skin back in those days guess we was hippies back in the great days maybe we turn the clock back that when color didn't matter i am white and when the started bussind blacks to my school thete was this black girl sitting by her selfe i Just sat down next to her we was best friends but her parents moved away sure miss kim
A great group of enthusiastic young people!
I was part of that crowd! Not really but at the same age. Where did it all go?
This is completely random, but is there any chance you could upload an intro from this period?
No problem. It’s a pretty short, funky, intro, but I’ll work on getting that posted..
What an experiment with music. Pure sex revolution and music tooooo. By 1970 I was in full swing. Lol
Dancers are more lively than usual.
No hog rings in the nose.
