- A bowl of this creamy rice pudding is the most comforting dessert to enjoy this winter. Plus, all you need are five simple pantry items to make it!
There’s really nothing better than eating spoonfuls of rice pudding, bundled up next to a fireplace at home. It’s one of those feel-good moments we crave during the holiday season - and the reason why I finally decided to recreate this classic rice pudding recipe for you.
My version of rice pudding is ultra-creamy, splendidly sweet, and perfectly spiced with a touch of cinnamon. And I love that it's naturally gluten-free and refined-sugar free. Essentially, it’s a bowl of coziness! I also love to stir in raisins, but you could opt for cranberries or other seasonal flavors to make this a special dessert for you, your friends, and your family!

What do you mix into your rice pudding?? Let me know! xo - Lisa
I m an a raisins kinds girl.
I knew it!!! Raisins for me, too! We use leftover white rice and skip the rice cooking step. I add a small pat of salted butter (about 1 Tbsp) to a large saucepan and then add the cooked rice…we use about a 1/2 to 1 cup of half and half to begin softening and reheating the rice (only takes a few minutes) and then we add in raisins, cinnamon, honey, vanilla and a pinch of nutmeg! It’s amazing and very similar to your recipe just using leftovers😉
Growing up, my mom would always add cinnamon and raisins just like this. I had friends that would add vanilla, cocoa powder and cinnamon, sometimes a dash of chipotle for a kick. Great recipe, thank you.
Walnuts, pistachios and almonds
This is what we eat a lot around christmas in Norway ❤ but we boli the rice in water for ten minutes before adding the milk and then let it boil all the way through. At the end add a pinch of salt and serve with white sugar and cinnamon on top and some butter in the middle.
As a young boy in the 50s, my Mom used to make us rice pudding just this way. It was always creamy and cinnamony and had lots of raisins in it. Thank you for posting this and dredging up old memories.
Gotta love a nostalgic recipe like this, enjoy!
In Denmark we add cinnamon sugar and a dollop of butter. Mostly a winter/Christmas treat. At Christmas dinner we have it cold mixed with vanilla whipped cream and chopped almonds and cherry sauce😊
Thanks for sharing! That sounds absolutely delicious 😉
My favorite rice pudding 💛💛💛💛
My family basically makes it exactly like this but we throw in a whole stick of cinnamon and a bit of ground clove during the simmering/stirring process. Super delish!
Fresh cinnamon is always a plus! 😉
My mom would make this for me and my brothers for breakfast. She would leave for work and we would wake up to find this on the stove..🤤
Aw, I love that ❤️
What a great mom!
I grew up with rice pudding, no raisins. My mother's recipe was to simply put everything together in a casserole dish and put it in the oven until the rice was done. Super easy. Included cinnamon, sugar, lemon, rice and milk. I made a version several years ago that included orange peel and mandarin slices. So good!
That sounds delicious! There are so many ways to customize rice pudding 😉
I also add ground cardamom to the milk. I add rose water to before serving and top with cinnamon and chopped pistachios. I grew up in the middle east and rice pudding was and still is my all time favorite dessert.
Love it that way!
Rice pudding is one of my favorite childhood desserts that my mom always made
Such a nostalgic dessert! Hope you enjoy it again 😊
May I recommend serving it with unsweetened coconut flakes on top. Match made in heaven.
I make mine with medium grain brown rice and use coconut sugar it gives it a nice nutty texture ❤
Sounds amazing! Thanks for sharing 😉
Yum! Yes, a childhood favorite my mom would prepare. I add a bit more cinnamon and some dried mulberries.🙂 the diced apples idea sounds good!
Love that! There are so many ways to customize this 😊
Looks delicious! And thank you for always suggesting the dairy free options. 👍
Of course! Hope you enjoy 😊
I scrolled through my subscriptions. Saw this. And now I’m making it as we speak. My toddler just wants to eat rice! I had some coconut milk but had to add in some cashew milk so excited to see how the combo works out. 🤞
Aw, hope you and your little one love this recipe!
I have tried so many rice pudding recipes. None of them come close to my memory of a good rice pudding. Yours sounds so delicious I will give it a try and hope that this is the true keeper. Thanks
UNFORTUNATELY I CAN'T CONCENTRATE ON THE RECIPE DUE TO THE FACT THE HOSTESS IS SO BEAUTIFUL TRUTH BE TOLD HER BEAUTY IS PHENOMENAL
My mom made this all the time and you're right it's delicious.
I love that you have so many gluten free and dairy free recipes!!! EVERY Recipe I have tried is 100% a winner and I have no doubt this one is too!
Aw yay! I'm glad you've been enjoying all my recipes so far.
Thank you! 😘 I like this healthy version 😉
Raisins are a must!

I LOVE Rice Pudding. My grandma used golden raisins.
Looks so comforting and hearty, if I had all the ingredients on hand I would make some today!

Lemon zest is wonderful too.
Looks delicious 😋 perfect for the winter

@@DownshiftologyI love rice pudding and have never thought of making it myself until now! Thanks for the recipe ❤️
Thank you for posting this. I love this recipe. I have not had rice pudding in a long time. I am going to make this some time this week. I love cinnamon on mine.
Oh yay! Now's the time to bring it back 😉
Cant wait to make this soon for me i never had creamy rice pudding before perfect for my after office snacks
Excited for you to try this creamy rice pudding!

Oh! Yum❣️
I like to put a little of grated coconut when serving. It's delicious! I'll try your recipe; rice pudding is one of my favourite desserts. Thanks for sharing!
Of course! Enjoy ❤️
I love rice pudding, haven had it since my Mom would make it for me when i was a teen, bringing back good memories, thank you for this recipe, time to make it,,,,,
Gotta love a nostalgic recipe like this ❤️
I make this all the time. Have to have shirt grain rice though. My kids love it and grandkids.
I've always wanted to learn how to make rice pudding!
Now you can make it at home with this easy recipe! 😊
How dare you, now I m tempted. ❤😊 i remember my grandma making this for me. Arroz con leche
Yes! Very similar ❤️
Love rice pudding
You and I both 😊
Great for breakfast
Great for dessert or breakfast!
So surprised you didn't mention pistachios, cashews, and cardamom as topping ideas! That's my favourite combo!
I've never heard of those toppings on rice pudding. Sounds delicious!
@@jenniferli185 It gives it more of an Indian feel, since those are classic Indian flavourings. (Especially the cardamom.) Use the same nuts but with cinnamon and/or rosewater, and it's more Mediterranean.
I was thinking the same. We top with pistachios or shredded almonds. We also add rose water in the middle east
Thanks for sharing! There are so many ways to customize it. Think of it as topping off overnight oats or oatmeal 😊
Every Christmas 🎄 my mother makes it with sour cherries (put in at the end once done with all those yummy spices )and it’s so delish 🍒. 😋 Yum 😋
Yum!! Hope you enjoy this nostalgic recipe with a touch of cherries then 😊
Try soaking the rice for 4 hours before adding to the boiling milk, and start this pudding dish by adding few tablespoons of ghee(clarified butter) ,2 whole cinnamon sticks, 2 cloves and few pods of cardamom, then after sauting these spices for few seconds, added milk and continue the process at you have mentioned.. it tastes even more delicious..
Are you soaking the rice in water first, or milk? Thanks Sarah....your upgrades sound yummy!
@@elbee1290 ♡ in water for 4 hours before cooking it.. ♡ you are welcome, love
Thanks for sharing!
Thank you.
I forgot all about rice pudding. I haven’t even thought about it in over a decade. 😂 It is good! Great channel and great video!
It's time to bring back this delicious dessert! ❤️
It is like Turkish desert sutlac, my mom used to make it a lot when I was a child.
I'd also add some lemon peel and keep it a tiny bit more liquidy, kinda like a quick arroz con leche. Yum!
Yes!! Great idea.
Just made this--AMAZING- I like your recipe much better than previous recipes that I made it from--they were very good BUT yours is AMAZING!! How long can you keep in fridge ? Thanks, Tina
Great video. Carmel, IN has a good one.
Looks scrumptious!
If you like this, you might also like ochazuke for breakfast on cold days 😋
Thanks for sharing! I'll have to give that a try 😊
Yummmmm
A little pinch of nutmeg je essential with a drizel of maple sirup on top 😊
My mom used to make me rice pudding during my childhood 🥰😍😋
It's such a nostalgic recipe!
My mom makes it similarly but sometimes around the holidays she would soak the raisins in rum prior to adding them in.
Sounds delicious!
Arroz con leche 😋
My Mother-in-law always makes it with cherries. She takes a jar of cherries (glass), heats it up, and adds a bit of cornstarch to thicken the liquid. This gets then poured over each serving of rice pudding. Delicious!
That sounds amazing! I'll have to try that sometime ❤️
I can’t wait to make this with Arborio rice. I like raisins but think I’d like to try it with dried cherries. Yum!
We do a Danish version of this with chopped blanched almonds, like a quarter cup, which retains its crunchiness along with the creamy chewiness of the rice pudding. Then you chill the rice pudding, and stir in a cup or so of whipped cream before serving, or chantilly cream if you want to add some sugar and vanilla to that. So it’s kind of light and fluffy in a way. They add currents, but my family doesn’t like currents so we skip that part.
And for Christmas, the tradition is to add a whole blanched almond to the bowl of rice pudding. Everybody eats carefully to see who wins the almond, and whoever gets the almond wins the “almond gift”, which is traditionally a marzipan pig, but it can be anything. So that’s a fun game with the kids and it slows everybody down from gobbling up the rice pudding too quickly. :) (by tradition, you also leave a little bowl of rice pudding by the fireplace for the Nisse (elves), so they leave you a nice gift or maybe so they don’t cause mischief like hiding your gifts!)
We also might serve this with a sauce of brandied cherries. My mom just took a can of cherries, not the pie cherries but the other ones, heat that in a sauce pan with a little bit of cornstarch and brandy to make a sauce. 🇩🇰
we have similar dessert called sütlaç in Turkiye
❤❤❤
Dried fruit is fine - but a good teaspoon of jam if better and in parts of the world more usual (ideally raspberry, strawberry jam fine) . And also nutmeg instead of or as well as cinnamon.
Your mention of tapioca made me smile. I never hear it mentioned as a dessert anymore 😊. What happened to it?
Here's my tapioca pudding recipe! downshiftology.com/recipes/tapioca-pudding/
🌹🕊Ho my! Yummi!🎈🎈🎈♥️🕊
Haven't had this since the 70s! I didn't know it was called rice pudding. I just thought it was rice with milk, cinnamon, and sugar. I like to make risotto with lemons, white wine, and cream.
It's time to bring it back!
Lisa, did you rinse the rice first?
My mom does rice pudding different because My family and I are Hispanics specifically Mexicans
Oh, could you tell about the difference? (sorry for my english, it's not my native language).
In my country we call this meal 'risovaya kasha' 😊.
And pudding is dessert meal, like catalana cream or flan.
@@bratchikova It had cinnamon sticks in it and the flavor is more milky
I make it in a pressure cooker. Made in 20 minutes.
Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for the recipe, my Mom would also make Maple Walnut Cream, have you heard of this, I can give you the recipe if you haven't
That sounds delicious!
@@Downshiftology IT IS, I HAVE A PHOTO OF IT, HOW CAN I SEND IT TO YOU, IF YOU WANT
I’ve tried this when I was studying in the UK.
But it took me an hour to cook, and the rice still remained hard to bite.
Hahaha didn’t know what’s wrong with the process.
I’ll make it with the coconut milk and NO raisins lol. I like raisins but not so much in the pudding.
Creamier!!!!!
Mom would cook the pudding over the stove top. Then add meringue folded in, placed into a casserole into the oven to heat though.Sadly don't remember the exact recipe remember her using cinnamon stick as well
That sounds amazing!! Thanks for sharing.
Pecans or walnuts would really make it sing
Agreed!
I add nutmeg not cinnamon, no raisins. Eaten warm not cold. But a tasty extra is warming sliced bananas in brown sugar until syrupy and spooning that over the prepared pudding. Love your ease of prep as a base recipe.
Yum! Thanks for sharing 😊
Another that won't eat raisins but will grapes because flys poop on them!...but not grapes!
That’s why you stir while cooking milk and rice makes since Brena
👏👏👍👍.
How many serves is this? Thinking of making this to feed a crowd of 45!
you shouldn't rinse out the rice before cooking it, correct? to retain more of the starch?
Correct.
thanks!@@Downshiftology
U should add sweetener after rice is somewhat cooked otherwise it will take even more than twice tye time for rice to soften
Add a dash of cardamom powder, a quarter teaspoon, or so.
We call it kheer
Always make sure to wash your rice
🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂👍 Superb! 🙂 Stay blessed! 👍 Keep it up! 🙂 God bless you abundantly forever 🙂 Enjoy amazingly blessed life 🙂 Stay happy and well protected. HAPPY NEW YEAR 2024! 🙂💐🥧🍬🍩🍪🎂🎂☃🎁🎉🎍👍👀🙂🙂
Smash it in the oven! So much easier!
Hi I'm mary I love you so much ❤ thanks for all videos ❤ I want to be friends with you ❤ please 😊
Its called Kheer... with some extra berries... 1st of all, also add some cardamom powder to it... it will smell and taste yum... and 2nd, if you are making a recipe which is inspired by some other recipe... please let everyone know or atleast mention it... west only knows naan, biryani, butter chicken, chicken tikka, and mango lassi as Indian cuisine... apart from that no one knows what Indian cuisine is... atleast this way people will know about some more Indian recipes... its an Indian dessert... if you just give a westernized name, no one will ever know anything more than those 5-7 Indian recipes...
I'm curious about how you store your rice. If my eyes don't deceive me it looks like the shown package expired in 2021. I'm guilty of finding expired rice packages at the back of my pantry and tossing them out because I don't think they're safe to eat anymore :(
Isn't this just Arroz con Leche? Lol
