James, these videos just barely fill the hole in my heart left by Nanci’s passing. I discovered Nanci totally by chance (the Chieftans album) and marveled at her brilliance. She didn’t start out good and get better. She started out brilliant and kept on shining. To see that raw brilliance in these videos is just amazing. You have my deepest gratitude for sharing them.
Nancy is the only artist I can clearly remember exactly the first song of hers I ever heard and what mile marker I was passing on a late night trip on a lonely highway. Looking For The Time (Workin' Girl). As I was on my way to Deadwood, SD, I will always be grateful to that unknown student DJ at a small college station who may have needed a smoke break leading to the full side A of A Fair Summer Evening . When Deadwood, SD played next I knew I had to get this album asap. It lead to finding a record store in Rapid City the next morning. She remains a must listen on any road trip.
“A hot night in August - so long to the goddess”. What a sweet and special gift Nanci was to this world. She faced her many illnesses privately with such dignity and grace. It is so uplifting to see so many people here who love her and keep her music and memory alive every day. She was a Goddess indeed.🩷
I have been a fan of Nanci’s for a long time, but have never seen a performance from this far back. Her style of singing, playing and songwriting was already well established. And she got better and better. My musical tastes run far and wide, but after more than 70 years, Nanci is right at the top of my list of favorites.
Drinking beer and smoking cigarettes and picking guitar and singing. God I loved the 70s. I came across Nanci with the Storm album So this is precious. thanks. Oh yeah also loved her Irish.
wow. this would've been before her first record which was released in 1978. man..if i could go back in time. i'm wondering where it was? not much applause...small venue i guess and early morning. thanks very much for sharing. RIP Nanci. you were an original without a doubt.
Thank you James…I turn 70 soon and so much of my spirit joy and wisdom is tied to the glorious community of folks from Houston Nanci, Eric, Lyle, Stephen and Franci, Rock Romano,Lucinda, Mickey and Wrecks,Vince Bell, Roger, John Grimaudo,George Ensle, Tim Leatherwood and you just to name a few… and Frank “Daddy Banjo” Davis😅
Wow, thanks for posting this. She was so young and probably had no inkling of the star she would become nor all the lives she would impact with her songs! RIP Nanci!
In 1974/75 there was a house converted into a bar behind Inner Sanctum Record store. Nancy would perform there. A friend, Tom Pitman, would accompany her. I would show up early and be the only person in the room listening. How she performed in the beginning was how she did it her whole career. It was her way. And the critics that later claimed that she was putting on an act and faking it can all go to hell.
Wow, look at her. In later years I know she started taking care of her voice. I heard her sing in Salt Lake one year. She spoke in a small whisper when she was introducing songs. She's so lovely here in the wild, and she was such a beautiful light.
Isnt it wonderful when a gem like this just pops up out of nowhere! Discovered her in England in the bottom of a basket of budget CD's in long gone Woolworth. Since then always a light in my woods.. Why she popped up in my feed could be the 'fault' of Salt Lake City . Do listen to the wonderful Kelli Moyle ( resident there) a similar shy star in the making here on the Tube. 😊
This is an absolute treasure. Nanci is one of the great poet/songwriter/singers of the 20th century. Here she sings some early songs I have not heard before in a natural setting.
I knew it. She loved barbecue. While I am here can someone tell me if she was cremated or buried. Also there should be a memorial site in honor of her life.
I sing a lot of her songs.i first heard her in new Hampshire 40 years ago.at the end of a large room. seemingly a small women until she opened her mouth. stoped me in my tracks.filled my heart and soul. RIP Nancy
We have all of Nancy's back catalog of recordings, and we counted three songs that we have never heard before. So wonderful to see her doing those songs. Thanks for sharing!
Oh lordy. I’m so glad I found your channel. Nanci is hard to describe. My love for Nanci is everlasting. She’s my guiding light, even now. If I’m having big feelings and I don’t know what to do with them, or struggling to process them I turn to Nanci. I sang her songs to my babies (who are now 13 & 14) and they remember everything 🙏
This is truly gold, her version from a distance in concert....🕊️ Left everyone speechless. You could of heard a pin 📍 drop...what a beautiful experience...🕊️ Thank you very much for posting....🥇...🌟
this is a real treasure. the earliest nanci i've seen. a bit raw before she "polished" things up but the incredible talent she possessed was already evident. thank you for putting this up and if you're the james she refers to, infinite thank yous.
Thank you so much for sharing this! I’ve never seen any video of her performing this young. She’s flown to heaven with the angels, but her music and words will forever grace this earth.
Thanks for this. She looks so young here and pretty & cute But she has good songs she can communicate them she has her personality & way of speaking directly to the audience. Her guitar playing will improve in time & she will hone her skills to become one of the best in the business across folk country & even some pop songs. I saw her here in Ireland in 1987 and 1996 I think. I loved her live shows & a few of her albums have helped me through some difficult times over the years Lovely to see this going back to 77. Thanks for posting. Nanci we miss you may God be good to you & bless you & keep you
Oh my goodness, Nanci was so young here. About 24, I think. Some great songs that I have not heard before until seeing this video. Glad that Nanci knew grew up in the 1960's and 70's in hearing some of the lyrics to these songs about being in high school in the late 1960's . Songs I can relate to of this time period as I grew up around the same time.
Always been a fan of Nanci's since the time I bought "Other Voices, Other Rooms" when it came out...Me and Father used to ride around in the middle of the night in Columbia SC throwing out newspapers listening to that album on repeat...We knew every single word every single song backwards and forwards...such a classic album...every song a masterpiece...anyway, always loved Nanci...she's so natural...so beautiful and so talented...Was, Is, and Always will be an American Treasure...Thank you Sir...I love your channel
I have never seen an image of Nanci when she was so young. Typically her videos were made when she was in her 30's. Here she looks like she might still be in high school (she would have been 23 or 24 at the time). Thank you for this video, I am so happy to see her in this different time. A different way to see and hear Nanci.
I'm exactly four days older than Nanci so for years I could look at her photos, especially the ones that were already a few years old, and imagine I was still that young. Thanks for posting this. She is missed.
This is a treasure. Never heard the song "Looking back is easy when it's raining" 15:40 I'll be going back and listening a few more times. Can't find this song in any of her catalogs. Only in this video... as far as I know. Thank you for posting this.
That's about when I was strumming and writing songs, and had that kind of hair too! Thanks for uploading. The 60's and 70's were my formative years and I will always remember them as a time of much singing and playing despite hard times for my family raising me. We didn't have much, but back then we didn't need much except food, a roof, and for me, an acoustic guitar! Sorry for your loss of this wonderful person and musician. Thank you whomever had the camera to film Nanci and for sharing.
I remember Nanci back at this time she played the clubs in Houston and Austin. Her vocals were at their peak. Houston had a fantastic live music seen. Lots of clubs on Washington avenue and the Montrose - all gone now except Mucky Duck.
Thank you for sharing this amazing video of early Nanci performing live. Yet another example of her early vocal power which Tom Paxton noted in Other Voices film. Also note the presence of a towel that Nanci used in many of her concert videos, throughout her career.
Thanks so much for sharing James! Never seen a performance at that young age. The whole package was already there, just waiting to blossom. God I miss her sweet soft Texas twang and harmonies.
Her ability with the guitar was rarely if ever specifically appreciated or lauded. She was so mysterious (someone should have swooped her up!)...even as to the cause of her death. For someone whose music seemed to indicate a deeply and profound love of life...she supposedly suffered from depression. If true... thst is SO sad. I love you Nancy. Seeya soon.
Pls help with lyrics to Looking Back is Easy When it's raining at 16:30!! to her first love. Johnny was my dreamer when i was twelve Read me history books his mama kept high upon the shelf. This is great, to see her so young but OH, so talented. I found her too late, (after her passing), but this helps fill the void. I cannot get enough of this lady. Is there a book out on her life & times? B.Simpson, Pender Island, BC.
Does anyone have the rest of the lyrics for part of Looking Back is Easy when it's Raining starting with "Memories are shadows when the sky is blue?" This is a beautiful, poetic song but I don't think it was ever recorded and I cannot find the lyrics on the internet.
Oh, yeah. Nance from the Anderson Fair & Hole In The Wall Days--Middle Earth, as I remember it--playing Eric's old D-28. I go back to Austin, these days, & it's nothin' but hill country blues, ten miles of tombstones and memories of you. That's a song, by the way.
Wait, did she have braces then, or is that a trick of the light? This video is a treasure. I've never heard ANY of these pieces of hers. Thanks so much for posting it!
This was about 12 years before I had ever heard of Nanci Griffith. She was quite different looking back then, Hawaiian shirt, faded blue jeans, bushy long hair as well as Budweiser chugging, cig smoking and talking about partying and too much alcohol. Interesting though to see her before she became the dress wearing, white anklet socks and Mary Jane shoe wearing Nanci. To tell you the truth I liked seeing this. It made me see a different side to her. Enjoyable.
Alabama Soft Spoken Blues and I Remember Joe were on her first album (1978) called There's A Light Beyond These Woods. I enjoyed her music throughout the years, but there was something really unique about her first four albums.

Nancy smoking a cigarette, drinking a Budwieser and singing her songs. Don't get any better than that. Shee is missed by many.
So true.
God bless you Nancy. Your music is a lasting treasure.
I first met her at the '79 Kerrville Folk Festival and fell in love immediately. She's only a year older than I am and it sure hurt when she passed.
wow. this would've been before her first record which was released in 1978.

RIP Nanci. you were an original without a doubt.
Loved her my entire life. “Anyone can be somebody’s fool” is still my very favorite. She is my GOD and her passing cracked my planet.
Good Lord,
she was one of kind.
Extraordinary.
Like a Time Machine back to ‘77. I thought I had watched every Nanci video that’s out there… until now.
James, thanks for posting this. RIP Nanci Griffith, one of the greats!
This is such a treasure. Thank you so much for sharing.

What a delightful performance by that beautiful young woman! Thanks for sharing!
Such a beautiful and talented lady, so sorely missed.

One of my favorites for 40 years!
I discovered Nanci in 1983 and didn't miss an Austin appearance for years after. An angel dearly missed.
Thanks for posting, great video. Kind of sad to watch, made me homesick for the dodgy 1970.
This is an absolute treasure. Nanci is one of the great poet/songwriter/singers of the 20th century. Here she sings some early songs I have not heard before in a natural setting.
Just love her THANK YOU.. Those darn blues
I knew it. She loved barbecue. While I am here can someone tell me if she was cremated or buried. Also there should be a memorial site in honor of her life.
Thanks James.
for making me cry.

Do you have any postings Annie of your singing any of Nanci's songs?
One of my absolute favorites - thank you for sharing this one ❤
"If ya can't find a friend, y'still got the radio!" Sadly missed. Thanks for posting this gem!
We have all of Nancy's back catalog of recordings, and we counted three songs that we have never heard before. So wonderful to see her doing those songs. Thanks for sharing!
I'm gonna watch soon and I'll yell you. I know of at least one potential song one of them could be
I had never heard the very last song on this video. And I love it.
Oh lordy. I’m so glad I found your channel. Nanci is hard to describe. My love for Nanci is everlasting. She’s my guiding light, even now. The Jimmy Gilmer of “Sugar Shack” fame?
she provided backing vocals on Mike Williams Comin' atcha, album on BF Deal records
Thank you so much for sharing this! I’ve never seen any video of her performing this young. She’s flown to heaven with the angels, but her music and words will forever grace this earth.

As much as I love Nanci I have yet to shed a tear for her since her passing. I have no reason as to why, it surprises me. This got me close.
Just beautiful James!!! Young Nanci!!! Thank you for putting this together and sharing it with us!!!

Wow! I think Nanci was only about 24 here! Already immensely talented!
I don't think I have heard this one by Nanci before.
she wS about 34, born in 1953.
FYI 53+24=77!
1977 minus 1953 equals 24 years old.
I'm exactly four days older than Nanci so for years I could look at her photos, especially the ones that were already a few years old, and imagine I was still that young. Thanks for posting this. She is missed.

Hi James. Wow. Thanks for posting.
Thanks for sharing this Jim, I miss her smile, her eyes, her voice, her soul, and her whole being
OMG. A new treasure trove. Twenty-four, raw, and edgy.
Please find my ode to Nanci on UA-cam: Crystal Voice.
Love this! She is deeply missed. One of a kind!
Thanks so much for sharing James! Never seen a performance at that young age. The whole package was already there, just waiting to blossom. God I miss her sweet soft Texas twang and harmonies.
Wow, just wow ~
So great to see this early show! I discovered her in the 90s when I lived in Denver and was fortunate to see her at a few concerts.
What a gem!!!
Gosh darn what a gem of a video!! If I were at that barbecue I would have become a fan seven years earlier. This is wonderful!!
Tremendous document!!! Really many thanks! An Italian fan (I'm sure one of the very very few from this country...Unfairly....)
Beautiful. Thank you. ❤
Dear Nancy, tears on face.
1977. It seems like it was another world. I knew everything in 1977. Now, I know nothing.
Yeah me too. "I was so much older then... "
Ok someone needs to build that
Memorial Tower in west texas.
One of a kind, and that's why I bought her albums and went to her shows.
I LOVE this! If you happen to have any other videos of my musical Goddess...❤
This is awesome!
She was young and still knew how she should sound . A natural pro .
Saw Nanci live a few times later around the one fair summer evening period, loved it and those weird open tunings she uses later
Her ability with the guitar was rarely if ever specifically appreciated or lauded. She was so mysterious (someone should have swooped her up!)...even as to the cause of her death. Pls help with lyrics to Looking Back is Easy When it's raining at 16:30!! to her first love.
Johnny was my dreamer when i was twelve
Read me history books his mama kept high upon the shelf.
Was a lanky boy with bony knees
We could laugh away the hours and the troubles with our dreams
Looking back is easy when its raining
I can let the thunder roar. Turning back the pages
A little like auld lang syne. Listen to the bluebird at your door.
Now we were sixteen back in sixty nine,
We were bouncing off the walls with the lightning in our eyes.
There were dances in the gym each friday night
Where the sisters lit their candles for the boys who lost their (fight?)
Looking back is easy when it's raining.
I can hear the thunder roar, let it roar.
Turning back the pages a little like auld lang syne.
Listen to the bluebird at your door.
Memories are shadows when the skies are blue,
You and I were more than just a swingin through?
Johnny was my dreamer and a boy who died
--heart of a man with whom i'd love to share my life.
Looking back is easy when its raining
I can hear the thunder roar.
Turning back the pages a little like auld lang syne.
Listen to the bluebird at your door.
Looking back is easy when its raining
I can hear the thunder cry.
Turn back the pages and the ghost will die
Fade away our ghosts to save our smiles
Johnny always said we would desert him in time.
He was just a bluebird singing auld lang syne.
Johnny always said I would desert him in time.
He was just a blubird singing auld lang syne.
Wow!! Nanci's memories of John!! Unbelievable loving lyrics - What a treasure she was
This is great, to see her so young but OH, so talented. I found her too late, (after her passing), but this helps fill the void. I cannot get enough of this lady. Is there a book out on her life & times? B.Simpson, Pender Island, BC.

How nice is that lassie.
Enjoyable.
Thank you!
Wow.

AMAZING!! Thanks for sharing! How did you get this?
Wow, I just got out of high school 76
Nancy was born in 1953, so is either 24 or 23 y.o. here. Budweiser & smokes! Beginning to find her voice.
There she is, in her element....the continuum.
Did any of these songs make it on to a record?
Alabama Soft Spoken Blues and I Remember Joe were on her first album (1978) called There's A Light Beyond These Woods. Near the end of the video she makes mention of Michael's Song, also from the album but then sings another song instead. Unfortunately her first three albums are not on Spotify and probably not on other streaming services either. Her last album, Intersection, was on Spotify but then taken off, but it is still on UA-cam music. There seems to be no consistency to what albums are put onto which platform. I understand it may have to do with rights and contracts but it would be really nice if all of her albums were on the streaming services.
Her first four albums were pure gold in my opinion. I didn't know who Nanci Griffith was until 1988 when I saw her on TV singing Never Mind which is from her sixth album. I still cannot find the video I saw. When I first saw and heard her I was blown away. I bought whatever albums she released. I didn't know much about her because in those days it was much harder to do the research we can do today. In the early 90's I went to Nashville and was thrilled to find her first four albums in a record store. I had no idea these albums even existed. I couldn't wait to get the albums home and listen. And I loved those albums. I followed her career for decades and bought every album. Saw her and John Prine (with only their guitars) in the mid-nineties. I enjoyed her music throughout the years, but there was something really unique about her first four albums.
Thats great you can see her later themes and motifs in a less polished form, in my opinion. She was a great artist.
This is akin to striking gold. All I can say is...EUREKA!!
Lost for words
Grazie .Bellissimo video
Nice!
Fabulous!
the beauty , you think you love her more than I do !?!?! you don't x
does anybody know what the title of the "what have i got to lose" song is? did she record that ever?
Whoa
