    I worked at a bar on Guadalupe St in Austin back in the 80s, both Townes and Nanci played there often. It was a folk bar, some night there were just the regulars listening...Blaze, etc...maybe 10 people...but it was overflowing those nights Nanci and Townes played. Townes was hit or miss depending on his ability to medicate just right. I still have a promo photo of Nanci she gave and signed for me, don’t know why i kept it other than she is a stunner and a great talent. This is my fav Townes song.

    This is my favorite Townes song. My band was the house band at the Lone Star Cafe in NYC in the mid to late 70's and we got to open for Townes on two separate occasions for a week each - 2 shows a night. He was such a nice human being - very laid back with a great sense of humor. We generally did not sit in the audience for the other acts but every night for those two weeks we snuck out to watch and listen. Those were two wonderful weeks and I consider myself very lucky to have been able to hear him live as well as hang out with him. I am still in awe of his writing.

    • @joemarshall4226
      @joemarshall4226 4 роки тому +11

      @@brianmunson5688 One of the things that makes the song interesting to us is that it's NOT a dirge. It's a western romantic ballad, musically, in a major key, not a minor, but the subject is tragic. It's the juxtaposition of so many things that make this song come alive like few songs do. It's a sad song, a song of lament, and it juxtaposes the brightness of the young woman's beauty, grit, and hope with her sad demise. It's a western requiem, but not a dirge. Life can be like this, and Townes seemed to have a gift in his ability to see great beauty even in tragic situations...."It seemed to me that the sunlight walked beside her"....What a way to express the feeling of a young man, taken by the beauty of a young woman.....Townes used unusual tricks in his singing. They are old fashioned tricks from the a different time, but the same place, that he writes about: His slides between notes, dragging the flat notes up to the proper pitch are unique in modern singing. Once you get on his wavelength, you realize the magic of what he is doing......If you want a real dirge, try his song "Marie". That is a stark song of unrelenting tragedy and emptiness. He wrote it to bring attention to the plight of homeless working people, and the struggles they endure. And he hits the nail on the head. I have friends who are street people, tortured by poverty, disability, and alcoholism. Last summer, I was driving around town with them, and I pointed out a young couple walking hand in hand. "That's a nice looking young couple right there," i said. My friend said, "she's a great gal, and he's a good guy, but they both struggle with heroin:. Turns out she had four kids by a husband who left her, and fell into drug abuse. It was less than a week later that they found her.....drowned in the canal. She slipped on the sloped cement side of the canal, slid down, and she couldn't crawl back out. She was from a nice family, and left those kids behind.....I heard"Marie" for the first time about a week later, and It brought tears to my eyes. It was like she was talking to me from the grave. Knowing what my disabled friend was going through dealing with social services brought it home even more.....

    What I've noticed about these great musicians is their ability to blend with each other, carefully not to overshadow who's shining at a given moment. It's done in all genres, but right now I'm Keen on folk. And to watch and hear how Nancy follows Townes' lead, gently fading out when Townes needs to go off key, or at the very end when all of a sudden you hear the fiddle player sustaining that long, last hold; he was there all the time.

      The folk singers from the Houston-Austin-Nashville circuit all knew each other very well. Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, Susanna Clark, Blaze Foley, Rex "Wrecks" Bell, Nanci Griffith, Eric Taylor, Steve Earle, Rodney Crowell, Bill Staines and others all performed at the same venues at various times and often sang each others' songs. It was cultural cross-pollination at it's finest. Some of the venues were The Old Quarter bar, the Anderson-Fair Retail Restaurant, Family Hand restaurant, Liberty Hall, Steamboat Springs, and the Mucky Duck (all in Houston), Huts Hamburgers , Alamo Lounge, Liberty Lunch, the Ritz, Buffalo Grill, Armadillo World Headquarters, Cheatam Street Warehouse, The Backstage, (all in Austin,) the Goodwoman Cafe, Springwater, Cantrell's BBQ (all in Nashville) and a host of other places all over the nation.
      After an unfortunate incident where Townes and Wrecks passed out upstairs with a candle burning at the Old Quarter bar (resulting in a devastating fire) the Old Quarter relocated to Galveston. After Townes' death, it kind of became a Townes Van Zandt "museum," decorated with old posters and photos of his career.

    My brother introduced me to her music in about '88. I bought several CD's , and I remember buying "Other Voices." I was in a really melancholy state at the time; this album really doesn't help, but I loved it, and its second volume. Appreciated how she included 2 Canadian legends, Gordon Lightfoot and Ian Tyson on the records

    As a young radio disc jockey back in the late 70’s I wasn’t totally familiar with Townes music and yet I had the good fortune of having him in the studio for a live interview and he performed some of his songs. Wish I had known then what a legend he was and would become. I’ll never forget that day.
