38 years on here I am listening to you sing when the world see us living in very troubled times. Now listening to you Nanci is balm for the soul. Thank you !
1st song proper title and correction: *"Daddy Said"* Oh, I used to wish I was a hard line taker, and they'd say, "Six to one a half dozen'll break her", 'till I fell in love with a young man who sang the blues Oh, bless my daddy, he warned me well He'd whisper in my ear and say, "Now look out, gal, There's always a ne'er do well gonna call you the fool" He said, "you'll never learn to fish on a borrowed line You'll never learn to write if you're walkin' 'round cryin' And it's a pity that you're lover died young, but, You'll never get tired of livin' alone". So, now I dream of the lover that I don't know It's safer this way ''cause I don't have to go, oh, and he Won't come, so nobody goes away Sometimes I wish for the warmth of his hand Take a look in these eyes and understand I'm just a little too old to be a-learnin' the rules of the game He said, "you'll never learn to fish on a borrowed line You'll never learn to write if you're walkin' 'round cryin' And it's a pity that you're lover died young, but, You'll never get tired of livin' alone". Oh, maybe I could take him to Mexico We'd kick our heels in the warm cloudy gulf He'd sing a song about the weather in the Poconos; This lover that I don't know Then two hearts would pound 'stead of one in the night I'd learn to fish with my own line Catch my dream and hope that line would hold He said, "you'll never learn to fish on a borrowed line You'll never learn to write if you're walkin' 'round cryin' And it's a pity that you're lover died young, but, You'll never get tired of livin' alone". No, I never get tired of livin' alone Sometimes my feet get cold, when I'm livin' alone,
Just read her book Other Voices, that accompanies the two albums of other peoples songs, such important albums, but the magic of her own world simply shared in song is the true essence of Nanci.
Her version of "Once in a Very Blue Moon" is amazing, the one she did on Austin city Limits is great too but this version is fantastic. I love how her voice is soft and gentle, but at other times has this slap in it that wakes you right up. A really underrated, fine, fine singer.
*(Roseville Fair)* Oh, the night was clear And the stars were shinin' And the moon came up so quiet in the sky All the people gathered 'round And the band was a-tunin' I could hear them now Playin' "Comin' Through The Rye" You were dressed in blue And you looked so lovely Just a gentle flower Of a small-town girl You took my hand And we stepped to the music With a single smile You became my world And we danced all night To the fiddle and the banjo Their drifting tunes seemed to fill the air So long ago, but I still remember When we fell in love at the Roseville Fair Now we courted well And we courted dearly And we'd rock for hours In the front porch chair Then a year went by From the time that I met you And I made you mine At the Roseville Fair And we danced all night To the fiddle and the banjo Their drifting tunes seemed to fill the air So long ago, but I can still remember When we fell in love at the Roseville Fair And here's a song for all of the lovers And here's a tune that they can share May they dance all night To the fiddle and the banjo The way we did at the Roseville Fair May they dance all night To the fiddle and the banjo The way we did at the Roseville Fair

She had leukemia when she was in her teens. She beat it. It returned again later in life. She fought it but unfortunately it took her. Kate Wolf was a great friend of her's. Wolf passed with cancer and part of Nancy seemed to go with her. Listen to the Nancy's version of "across the great divide" Written by Kate Wolf. My sweet angel Nancy rest in peace.😢
Beautiful Nanci. The world is poorer now that you have passed. I loved listening to your music.

Yes.
I especially love it when she talks about places that I know and love, like Mount Bonnell. Her stories take me back there again.
Such wonderful music. I never tire of listening to her. I love that Lyle Lovett is singing backup. ❤
I just noticed that, incredible! I love her and just discovered her this week for the first time!
So many lyrics to remember,, Amazing!
Good Lord, she was AWESOME.
She really was angelic.
What a special treat this is, my how time flies. Thank you for posting this video, the awesome Nanci Griffith
Lovely Nanci 💝🙏💝

Oh, I used to wish I was a hard line taker, and they'd say,
"Six to one a half dozen'll break her",
'till I fell in love with a young man who sang the blues
Oh, bless my daddy, he warned me well
He'd whisper in my ear and say, "Now look out, gal,
There's always a ne'er do well gonna call you the fool"
He said, "you'll never learn to fish on a borrowed line
You'll never learn to write if you're walkin' 'round cryin'
And it's a pity that you're lover died young, but,
You'll never get tired of livin' alone".
So, now I dream of the lover that I don't know
It's safer this way ''cause I don't have to go, oh, and he
Won't come, so nobody goes away
Sometimes I wish for the warmth of his hand
Take a look in these eyes and understand
I'm just a little too old to be a-learnin' the rules of the game
He said, "you'll never learn to fish on a borrowed line
You'll never learn to write if you're walkin' 'round cryin'
And it's a pity that you're lover died young, but,
You'll never get tired of livin' alone".
Oh, maybe I could take him to Mexico
We'd kick our heels in the warm cloudy gulf
He'd sing a song about the weather in the Poconos;
This lover that I don't know
Then two hearts would pound 'stead of one in the night
I'd learn to fish with my own line
Catch my dream and hope that line would hold
He said, "you'll never learn to fish on a borrowed line
You'll never learn to write if you're walkin' 'round cryin'
And it's a pity that you're lover died young, but,
You'll never get tired of livin' alone".
No, I never get tired of livin' alone
Sometimes my feet get cold, when I'm livin' alone,
Thankyou kindly

The most magical singer/songwriter of the 80s. Nanci was pure joy.
I found Nanci in the early 90's andi just need to feel young tonight. Thanks
I saw her open for the Everly Brothers and I fell in love!
Thanks for posting this it is wonderful to hear her in her earlier years.
Early-ish...her first album was 1977. 8 years prior.
-And hardly anybody knew about her first album. I didn’t know of Nanci until ‘Poet in my Window’ in 1982.
Her version of "Once in a Very Blue Moon" is amazing, the one she did on Austin city Limits is great too but this version is fantastic. I love how her voice is soft and gentle, but at other times has this slap in it that wakes you right up. A really underrated, fine, fine singer.
Yes.
I had almost forgotten how pretty she was.
Beautiful. What a gift you’ve given us.
This is great. Thanks for posting
She IS my angel, the voice I hope to hear in HEAVEN, please GOD!!! Michael Cook Temple Tx.
Thanks for sharing this-WONDERFUL!!!
I'm in love with Nanci '85
@@Strimbles join the club 😍🤭
Such a beautiful inspiration lady
At about 5:20, good to see Lyle Lovett singing backup.
Just had to check if my eyes were right! You saw him too.
A friend I never got to meet.
maybe the best of anything I have ever seen...
The great Nanci Giffith. Lyle Lovett sings backup here
I see Rick West back there and Roy on the bass. I think Patrick Alger is also in the band. No Denise Franke?
And Bella Fleck on the Banjo
Also, studio legend Lloyd Green on pedal steel guitar and dobro.
*(Roseville Fair)*
Oh, the night was clear
And the stars were shinin'
And the moon came up so quiet in the sky
All the people gathered 'round
And the band was a-tunin'
I could hear them now
Playin' "Comin' Through The Rye"
You were dressed in blue
And you looked so lovely
Just a gentle flower
Of a small-town girl
You took my hand
And we stepped to the music
With a single smile
You became my world
And we danced all night
To the fiddle and the banjo
Their drifting tunes seemed to fill the air
So long ago, but I still remember
When we fell in love at the Roseville Fair
Now we courted well
And we courted dearly
And we'd rock for hours
In the front porch chair
Then a year went by
From the time that I met you
And I made you mine
At the Roseville Fair
And we danced all night
To the fiddle and the banjo
Their drifting tunes seemed to fill the air
So long ago, but I can still remember
When we fell in love at the Roseville Fair
And here's a song for all of the lovers
And here's a tune that they can share
May they dance all night
To the fiddle and the banjo
The way we did at the Roseville Fair
May they dance all night
To the fiddle and the banjo
The way we did at the Roseville Fair
There is such a thing as "love at first sight!"
A little like emylou👍😊
I didn't like that comparison, talented and lovely as Emmylou is. I found it lazy and largely based on Nanci's appearance.
hi would you like some more music all the best

Who plays lead electric guitar?
She looks healthy here. It was not long and she did not look healthy. She always looked sickly.
