    It's a tough position, to be the "replacement" player in a band... and I can only imagine it's to the nth degree in a band as huge as Metallica. But Trujillo is just such an affable, likable guy, and such a talent. He's earned everything that's come his way.

      In a way, he kind of stepped in at the best time that he could have into a band that was able to accept a new member. Metallica has been very broad in it's music writing since the Black Album that Rob never really had to replicate anyone else's writing style. If the band would have wanted a direct replication of any member, that would have been much more difficult.

    • @samsmith1999
      @samsmith1999 Рік тому +3

      @@Danlovestrivium Musically, I agree with you. But, more than that, Lars and James had grown up a lot from when Jason joined the band. I believe they were able to appreciate Roberto's contributions in a way they could never appreciate Jason's. They always kept Jason at arm's length, and I think that's just immaturity. They've said as much in interviews. They felt like Jason was "lucky" to be part of Metallica. It seems, now, Metallica feels lucky to have Trujillo.

    • @billbored8277
      @billbored8277 Рік тому +1

      Rob is too good of a bass player to follow licks. I'm extremely happy for him, don't get me wrong. But I've seen him live when he played with Suicidal Tendencies and Infectious Grooves and his live game is ON POINT. A literal beast on that bass.
      In Metallica, you wouldn't really know it

      Every single one of the bass players happened to land their gig in the best "Metallica" time frame for their qualities. Cliff, at the very beginning, bringing music knowledge and being (almost) the leader. Jason fit right in the "I'm fkn angry and I'll tear the venue down" era with his vocals and finally Rob as the guy that was needed to reignite the spark. Or at least that's my view on it

James seemed to have so much problems at the time that he wasn't in a position to take any decisions that big.

    True story, I did not know who this guy was when I saw him at the Peabody Hotel in Memphis the day of Ozzie’s Merry mayhem tour. I saw him at the bar with shorts and white tube socks. He then walked around and I saw him a few other times that day. So during the concert to say I was surprised to see him playing bass is an understatement!!!😂😂😂😂😂

    I've been watching Robert develop since his days in Suicidal Tendencies. He's a monster bassist and an overall good guy. He was even in a Yellow Pages commercial where they randomly stopped people on the street to ask if that person can think of anything that couldn't be found using the Yellow Pages. The caption listed him as a "professional musician", which he is, but it was cool to see him pop up in a commercial while he was playing in Suicidal. BTW.. he asked for a kilt when queried by the commercial host.

    But I love the four of them and they certainly are a balanced class act.
    As good as any band past or present.

    he still feels like the guy that agrees on everything james and lars want without debating, though. which might even be needed for the band to work at all. still feels like he did not change their music like jason and cliff did. might be wrong.

      I think it's hard to quantify, but I also think you are overestimating Jason's contributions(and I like Jason). From a pure songwriting credit stance, Cliff and Rob are close, with Cliff having very, very obvious influence on the band and the sound. Dude was insane. Jason has three song credits, the only one of which I think is worth noting is Blackened. I just don't see how Jason changed or added to the band outside of being energetic in live shows and giving 120% all the time. Justice was not a bass friendly album, everyone knows, and his skill was not on display there at all. The black album sound had far more to do with Bob Rock than anyone, so I don't credit Jason with that. Load and Reload were good in their own right, but not great. More hard rock than metal or thrash. I think it's fair to say the three albums Rob has been on have been a better mix of old and new, but I can't say that's on him. I like all their bassists, but I think Rob gets the short end for being agreeable when he is an extremely talented guy. Think about it this way: he was pushing 40, was basically a touring or session musician for most of his career and this gig falls in his lap. Wouldn't you be a yes man and do whatever the hell they needed so you can be a part of something great and also create a new life for yourself?
