Wow. Pretty eye opening. James and Lars have matured enough to admit they were wrong in how they treated Jason, at the beginning and when he left the band. You can really hear how much Kirk appreciates and loves Jason.
"It happened because it happened." "I didn't even know there was a fight." - James He's not taking any accountability here at all. This is a pathetic display from the supposedly enlightened Hetfield. Jason made it very clear that he felt very disrespected by James during the whole ordeal.

Man!! What a huge MONSTER turn around for real…Lars nailed exactly what I was thinking when Jason left. I remember saying how bad are things going in Metallica that this guy who’s dreams came true who not only loved Metallica but looked up to Cliff B and lost it when he heard the news of his death just up and quit his dream job? He never quit because of all the hazing or pranks or when the other three charged everything to his room it was pretty bad but Jason didn’t care but when they clipped his creative wings and forced him into a box and basically told him to just be thankful you’re playing with us no matter what who wouldn’t leave? He made enough money with them to be able to live comfortably for the rest of his life so why not?…to hear how much these guys have grown to look back and say “if Robert suddenly wanted to quit we’d fight for him” and in retrospect they should’ve fought for Jason?…that is some serious growth internally.
@@MikelBrownSchilling At this point, I don't see Jason would want to. All he wanted was a closure. To be fair, Rob was also exactly what Jason was after Cliff - the guy who glued the band at times when the patch was really really rough for them. And to this date, Rob is the longest serving bassist in the band. Unless, yeah, it goes like you said, Rob surprisingly wanted to leave the band to retire and give way to Jason. That could be a good resolve for a story.
Jason was, and always will be, my favorite Metallica member. He’s finally getting the love and respect that he deserves from his fellow band mates. Better late than never.
To see them giving Jason his props all these years later made me tear up. Cliff was always the musical virtuoso, and he’s sorely missed, but for me Jason was THE Metallica bass player. His energy, live performances, and backing/lead vocals were above and beyond what Cliff brought, and what Robert brings to this band. Miss seeing Jason up on stage with these guys…
Though i think its important to say, its still worth maintaining those qualities and who you are in essence at a core level, despite your positive characteristics not being given their due. In order to not turn into the (as someone above put it) narcissists that overlook you. Be true to yourself, be a good person, fight for positivity, but that doesn't at all mean you have to be a doormat. And when the fight is too much, when negativity is too extreme i come to find that its best to let it be what it is. If it angers you, let it. If you are going to curse up storm.. do it. Process it and let it pass. But this is only for extreme moments where the usual approach gets flipped. And i find that it works and im over it quickly. And obviously words are one thing, actions are another. Meaning this is not a message condoning violence or being aggressive toward others. ✌️
I think that's why the Some Kind of Monster documentary is so important for not only Metallica, but bands and relationships in general. They were so guarded, and closed off emotionally, and put up such thick walls between eachother that they inevitably disintegrated because they simply couldn't let anyone in on their turmoil. They covered it up TOO well in interviews and public appearances. It was all a show. The band was falling apart for years and no one knew. SKOM kind of broke those barriers down and showed people it's ok to have these necessary conversations.
I think it was too revealing. It's better that a band have some mystique, and there's no worse way to destroy it than to bring the cameras into a therapy session. Especially when the therapist seems more interested in seeing how long he can milk it, than creating any true psychological breakthroughs within the band.
@@sirchromiumdowns2015 I agree with you but you also see the band come to that very realazation and move past it knowing that with the new tools they've been provided they can now make things work. I think its an important music documentary because it really does show the toll being a rockstar can put on a person as well as those around them.
There is an insane amount of pain and disappointment in their body language as they talk about Jason in this manner. James sums it up in a very deep way. They wanted Cliff. Instead they had this kid who was playing their friends parts. Jason was the "replacement" for Cliff, but there is no replacing him. So these angry little boys have to keep playing music they wrote with their friend who is no longer living. They had to relive so many things over and over everyday for years. And the whole time, there's Jason in a Cliff tee shirt reminding them of what they used to have. Jason saved the band and probably the lives of the other three. They could've wound up broke, and with drug habits. They could have brought in the wrong person, and that guy could've have ruined them...there are so many different ways it could have ended. Jason prevented all of that. He held them together, and let them heal at their own pace. And when he left, it forced them to look at reality and change things before it killed them all.
Nice to see after all these years they still love and respect and admire Cliff even more then before. And it is good to see Lars and James admit it is because of them that Jason left, and Kirk saying that they needed Jason. Hope Jason sees this.
Jason probably doesn't need to see this. They are saying it publicly now but must have expressed it to him much before this interview. Great to see them doing it publicly too. Legendary band🤟
I’m really glad James, Lars, and Kirk came out and said what they said about Jason. It shows maturity and wisdom on their part. Especially Kirk expressing gratitude for Jason being there for them. I really hope Jason saw this (I’m sure he probably has or at least has heard about it) because I know that it would mean a lot to him. Metallica forever! 🤘
One awesome thing you can say about Jason…and there’s many…He brought 110% every show no matter what! Man you checkout some of those late 80’s shows, he was just a beast live…then in the 90’s when he took on more of the vocals lead/back up, awesome stuff
People mention the Some kind of monster movie…. But what you really have to do is look at the second half of the “Year and a Half in the Life of” the covered touring in support of the black Album to get a taste of the abuse Jason endured
Jason was so far ahead of Metallica as a unit, maturity wise. I guess there’s something to say about his upbringing here … Jason had a very stable upbringing, with a tight family resolve and sense of loyalty. A good upbringing man … that goes miles into adulthood and maturity. I can’t recall the interview it was where he speaks about various shenanigans happening at Metallica shows/general metal shows, and how he had the sense to stay clear of all of it thanks to the values and grounding his family instilled in him.
I seriously doubt it. I think they're pretty firm on their stance that it was a time capsule that probably shouldn't be messed with. There are so many fan-made ones now anyway that at this stage in their career it probably would be too much of a back-peddle. But hey, we can always hope.
Remixing won't fix a damn thing, the bass got buried because It wasn't good enough, It just doubled James Guitar and the time was not correct for the álbum, therefore It doesn't Matter if they have the máster tapes, It won't fix the reason why It happend... Now, if they ask Jason to do It again all this years later, that might do
If you listen to the "Rough Mixes" on the Justice anniversary, you notice Jason's bass can be heard on ALL of the songs. So that's a glimpse of what it would sound like
That's a long-winded way of saying: "Jason, we fucked up royally with you." The regret is palpable. Even if it is too little, too late, it's there. They go ahead and they fucking say it. Hindsight is always 20/20. I can sort of imagine Jason having told these guys at some point about Rob:" Don't fuck this up." What I also like about Jason is his utter respect. Like, when he showed up for the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame, it was on the condition that Robert is completely onboard with it. Man, for the wild motherfucker that Jason was onstage you'd never believe how serious he is. I bet when he said he was going to step down the rest of the band had no doubt in their mind that Jason Curtis Newsted meant business.
Jason is always the embodiment of old school Metallica. Intense, all about the music, and putting it all out there. The band doesn't have the fire like it used to when they had Jason.
I really thought Jason was, 'it' after Cliff died, and was shocked when he's left the band, and what caused him to want to leave. I was just as surprised when they picked Rob for his replacement too. Rob's a great bassist, but he was like rent a bassist at that point, he'd been a part of so many bands! But, I completely understand WHY they chose Rob too. I honestly thought he would be temporary, but here we are, 20 years later, and he's still here.
I don't think I'll ever completely understand Rob! :D But hey, he's the man and he inspired me to start playing bass without a pick. And if Met are happy with him, then my job is to friggin' deal with it. But having that said, who else would it even be. It's crazy that even after 20 years I'm like "oh, the new bassist". It's really stupid. When you come to think of it, Robert is in certain ways like Jason. He's his own kind of a beast onstage. Maybe a tad goofier person... but I somehow feel 72 is his album. He instigated it. I must be imagining things but I somehow feel he had his hands on everything about it.
Jason is my favorite bass player of all time .. I forget what magazine I read a quote from him many years ago, in which he essentially states that his sole life’s purpose is to play heavy music and I found that deeply inspiring - still do
I'm glad Newsted's legacy is what it is today. Cliff was the virtuoso, robert had his own fame prior to Metallica and has been there the longest, yet to me Newsted is THE bassist for Metallica when I close my eyes and picture the band
Its truly sad... Because Jason wasnt meant to be a front man,,, or a solo group... He was meant to be the bass end high screaming energy force behind Metallica ~
Jason was like a fan, like one of us. They treat him like trash, he leaves and THEN they are suddenly about allowing everyone's creative input. Kirk knew at the time it was wrong but couldn't really do anything as it's Lars and James who make all the decisions.
I mean watching live performances of Jason in youtube, hes on fire, his energy was unmatched and I often find myself listenin his Seek and Destroy Mexico City live performance over and over again
When I watched Flotsam and Jetsam. I can 100% attest that he is exactly like what they say Jason is. Always 110% into the band. Always the first one in and last one to leave. Signing autographs, always taking time with anyone who wants to talk to him. Newsted can never get enough credit for what he helped Metallica stay alive.
Jason helped drive Metallica where it was trying to go. Lars and James were obviously the initial creative force behind the music but Jason really pushed their idea with whatever control he was given. Sometimes you don't always get full control over bettering something so you gotta accept that your placed where you are with certain buttons and controls and Jason didn't let that slow him down, he went 100% with the buttons he was allowed to push in Metallica. He was pedal to the metal with what little control he had. Of course he tried to push further but never got to escape from that box they'd put him in. But in that box he still made all the noise he could with full energy and love.
Glad to see the guys realize how instrumental Jason was for Metallica. That guy opened the door for me into the metal universe at the 91 MTV music awards. I tuned in to see Poison and stuck around for Metallica. They way he head banged was so unreal and I never seen anything like it. Next thing I know it I’m listening to older Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, PANTERA, Suicidal Tendencies, etc. Thank you Jason! The metal world loves you!!! What would be so cool is if Metallica decided to become a 5-member band and bring Jason back in to play side-by-side with Rob. How could would that be? He’d sure help James get a break with vocals. 🤘🔥🤘
Dont know what you got until it is gone. I hope these guys regret their actions for the rest of their lives. Their fragile egos could not let them truly accept Jason and give him the respect that he truly deserved. Neither of them are better off without each other and in the end, everyone lost.
You wanna show Jason appreciation? Remaster Justice, release it. It will sell well. Not to the extent that it would before streaming, but I for one would buy a copy. Period.
I have mixed feelings about this. I feel glad that these guys acknowledged how they mistreated Jason, and I’m glad they made amends. I understand “growing up together.” That’s valid. There’s little experience, little guidance… they were young rock stars. On the other hand - I feel so much disappointment that they ran Jason through the gauntlet like this. He was devoted, he was bright, positive, and passionate. These guys really beat the shit out of him, and I’m so pissed off at them for doing this.
I suppose I had not appreciated Jason by only listening to Metallica during his years, I thought he was a great bassist and a fine choice for the band, but it wasn’t until I started watching old concert videos with Jason that I was totally blown away at his energy, involvement and his presence on the stage. What other member of Metallica has ever taken over vocals on any of the songs? Jason is the only one I’ve ever seen. And that’s some serious props from a metal god to let someone else in the band shoulder some vocal work and stand aside while Jason holds his own. Yeah, I’m glad they had this chat because Jason is nothing short of a badass.
Yes, you are right on the money. I saw them on both the AJFA and Black Album tours, and Newsted was a huge driving force on stage, musically, visually, presence, energy, the whole deal.
It took the better part of four decades, but their growth as people has enabled them to realize how shitty they were to him, and to take it upon themselves to issue a public apology while giving him his long overdue props.
i wonder if these guys truly understand they're like family to their fans. i've been listening to their music since i was a kid. and yet i stopped after jason left. i'm glad they go on and are still so big but i no longer care for what they do.
@@montex23 i always thought Jason contributed very groovy basslines- even in AJFA, with the bass louder, it really adds a different dynamic to the listening.
Much respect for Jason Newstead. I saw Metallica on the “and Justice for all” tour, and they were awesome! Jason’s energy and musicianship helped make the show really entertaining!!
I was sold on the Black Album Box set seeing they they reached out to Jason and had him do the unboxing. As a fan of his that really meant a lot. I hope one day he will share the stage with them and I’m able to see it. He was the fan that made it! 👏🏻
The honesty. It's never too late to own up to mistakes made. As much as Metallica finally appreciates what Jason was and did for the band, I truly hope Jason appreciates the lessons learned and the character it takes to admit fault. I really hope Jason sees the heartfelt honesty this interview showed.
I have such a triumphant feeling after watching this. Triumphant for Jason, triumphant for Metallica finally realizing what Jason gave for/to them, and triumphant for their legacy because it takes a big person to publicly admit screwing up majorly. I was hesitant at first for the sincerity of it, but after watching, I really do believe them. They have the Cinderella syndrome....... Don't know what is got, till it's gone.
There is a saying "Too little, too late." Now I get where they are coming from. Age and time have a way of opening your eyes to what was so easy to ignore when you were younger. Not knocking them at all for finally realizing what they did. But now they have to live with that knowledge.
I'm glad they managed to be Friends again in the end and also admitted how out of control and angry they were against Jason in those dark times of theres. That whole era was an interesting time for Metallica. Jason was a huge blast of energy that Metallica needed after that whole incident, wish we could've got to see more of what he could've brung heavy wise , more stuff like blackened etc, but I'm glad still for what we got album wise with Jason especially the black album and in justice for all....even if it is barely audible lol. He was such a beast live at concerts for Metallica, most time's seemed like they needed to keep up with Jason lol especially with those amazing backing vocals of his and those powerful AF headbangs 😅 .
Just once I'd love to see the other timeline where Jason stayed and they let him grow. We fucking loved that guy so much, man. They know they fucked it up, and Robert does, too. I'm sure being the solid guy he is, Robert would be as happy as the rest of us if Jason had stayed. It's all just a damn fucking crying shame, man.
It's very cool to hear them say this about Jason. This band was my life in the 80's and while I'm not a fan of their music the last 25 years, I will always have love for them
James Hetfield gave Jason Newsted an ultimatum. It was about the "Echobrain" band Jason was playing with on the side. Hetfield didn't like that at all and basically told Jason it's either all or nothing with you playing for Metallica. No side projects, no merchandise selling, no Echobrain, nothing! So Jason left. Jason actually said this in a interview.
And It was on Cliffs anniversary of his death and James was drunk whilst he insulted Jason with that. Jason said it was that moment that he decided to leave as he was so disrespected to be talked to that way by someone younger than himself.
the song The Unforgiven kinda puts me in mind of Jason and how he was treated in Metallica. He came in trying to help the band out knowing what just hapend and they just treated him as a whipping boy and took out all the anger and sadness they had over losing Cliff
They were all very young when Cliff died so it stands to reason that they mishandled Jason. The human brain is not even fully developed until 26 plus these guys were rockstars. Talk about testosterone and attitude. Jason made millions so do not feel too badly for him BUT you can only imagine some of the not so nice stuff.
None of them aside from Lars even had a solid enough upbringing to know how to process anything deeper than what they were gonna do for dinner that night. I can only imagine how traumatized and pissed off they were after.
I don’t feel bad for Jason…..I feel bad for Metallica as they’ve only made one half decent album since he left (Death Magnetic)….the others are poor (and I’m a fan!)….and the less said about ‘LuLu’ the better!
Fantasy land bro. It's been 20 years. He doesn't even know the new songs, and would be a total betrayal of Rob who's been loyally part of every album since.
@@khall187 Not to mention he's stated that his various injuries and a large-ish surgery have left him unable to play with great intensity for very long at a time, so he wouldn't be able to keep up with a full Metallica gig (his words).
Jason left Metallica on his own will - and I’m sure he was certain with his decision. And the band seems to be finally comfortable with his decision and have moved on themselves. Rob isn’t going anywhere and both sides would acknowledge that.
After cliff burton passed away most of the fans that came after when the video of one came out and enter sandman the black album eara jason newsted is the reason why Metallica fans liked the band that bass guitar tones on the black album pop pluck sound and him playing with a pick gave definition to the band sound and I miss that 😊... Robert is great and over the last two years his bass guitar tones have grown and got better when I listen to live stuff I can hear the bass guitar lines pop and pluck I like jazz bass guitars because you can roll off the neck pickup and the bridge pickup can be heard 😊
Should've given him more writing credits. I mean this man wrote one of the most iconic riffs ever for Metallica, Blackened. Then they ended up writing and playing his bass parts like King Nothing and Devil's Dance etc.
Jason Recorded all the Bass For those albums, dude. And the only reason he has so little writing credits is because the majority of his stuff that he sent to them at that time was apparently like fast, Thrashy stuff like their earlier work, and Metallica weren’t looking for that at that time. But then you’ll have outliers like My Friend of Misery and Where the Wild Things Are that aren’t that and would be the kind of stuff that Lars and James would pick out from his material. Lars and James are already great on their own at producing stuff, but if they like it enough, they’ll draw in ones from the other band members, though not to simply appease them as band members and take in whatever they got.
He didn't leave bacause he wanted creative freedom. That's just what Lars is saying. It was a small part of a big problem, they basically made Jason despise Metallica and pushed him to his limits until he decided that he doesn't want to deal with their shit anymore.
Hetfield took a thousand turns in his response only to say that he would defend Trujillo but NOT Newsted. It's really stupid to believe that a bassist is superior just for playing with his fingers. Metallica lost too much when Newsted left.
Still not hearing a solid and genuine "sorry" from their mouths for Jason. Their stories and appreciation now, sound like an effort to explain why they were assholes to him...and that's all becasue of public backlash. You cannot use the 'Cliff' excuse for 15 years and bash someone up for so long, that's weak.
I met Metallica in 1997, and by then my fandom was on its way out, so they weren’t gods to me. Lars couldn’t be bothered more than to give a quick wave from afar. James insulted my friend by commenting and joking about his birthmark. Kirk was quiet and didn’t say much. But Jason was so awesome. Hung out before the show and after. Spent a lot of time talking about gear and other bands. Gave us food. He didn’t leave until he literally had to go. Just a real down-to-earth, level-headed dude with zero ego or façade of self-importance. I’ll never forgot how he was, as well as the other three. And any interview I’ve seen since, he’s still that dude, and they try to pretend they still aren’t the douchebags I met some 27 years ago. Maybe they’ve changed, it can certainly happen over three decades, but I get a sense they really haven’t, but maybe that experience just tarnished my opinion to the point I’ll never see them any different.
As much I loved Cliff, I have to give major applause to Jason. He did save Metallica, he helped them climb out of the deep hole that Cliffs death caused. Plus, he was able to handle the pressure of him trying to replace an unreplaceable icon. Not to mention all the stuff that James, Lars and Kirk said, being a punching bag for the band. I was a hardcore Metallica fan up until the black album… I stopped being a fan, partially because I was young and stupid (23 years old) and partially because I was starting to lean heavily into the punk scene. I thought they “sold out”, but listening to them talk now about their respect for Jason, I’m finding a newfound respect for them. I’m older now too and many of my opinions have changed, I’ve grown up in a lot of ways just as they did. I think I’m gonna give them another chance, and give myself another chance too.
@@richspizzapartyyes they did. The black album wasn’t just a sell-out. It was a betrayal to the Metal community.
I feel Jason is gonna return in the near future. I don't know as Rob wants to be in Metallica as the "full time bassist."
Not only great bass player but best backup singer they had too.
Shit happens but I applaud Lars and James for stepping up and saying that what happened was their fault. That shows great strength and character.

@@ginameile5937Thank you for the comment. I’m going to see Metallica in 4 days. I’m very excited 😊
He was the fuckin motor of metallica.. They miss him... They will never ever be the same live without him...
Cliff was the motor, he was a replacement, Trujillo is better than both.
Jasons backin mg vocals were on point, all those others sound like girls. He had a growl they needed.
So true. for me, Jason completed Metallica.

When they are narcissists like these yes
well said
Though i think its important to say, its still worth maintaining those qualities and who you are in essence at a core level, despite your positive characteristics not being given their due.
@@travisedwards3543 well said Travis
I think that's why the Some Kind of Monster documentary is so important for not only Metallica, but bands and relationships in general. They were so guarded, and closed off emotionally, and put up such thick walls between eachother that they inevitably disintegrated because they simply couldn't let anyone in on their turmoil. They covered it up TOO well in interviews and public appearances. It was all a show. The band was falling apart for years and no one knew. SKOM kind of broke those barriers down and showed people it's ok to have these necessary conversations.
Said beautifully
I think it was too revealing. It's better that a band have some mystique, and there's no worse way to destroy it than to bring the cameras into a therapy session. Especially when the therapist seems more interested in seeing how long he can milk it, than creating any true psychological breakthroughs within the band.
@@sirchromiumdowns2015 exactly! Since I am not a fan I don‘t mind but for a true fan it must be heartbreaking.

@@delinquent-bikergangmangafan We've all been stalking Mikey for years. It's natural.
No maturity here. Just excuses
Kirk has always been side with Jason
Kirk was never really the one bullying Jason, it was always Lars and James (Mostly Lars)
He was a stabilizing force his entire tenure with the band. Love you, Jason. Thanks for all the years and all those shows.
A truly respect for Mr. Jason newsted...
Jason was a beast live
Now that they realized Jason was a driving force for the band, will they remix AJFA at last ? It would be a mark of respect for Jason AND fans..
I seriously doubt it. I think they're pretty firm on their stance that it was a time capsule that probably shouldn't be messed with. There are so many fan-made ones now anyway that at this stage in their career it probably would be too much of a back-peddle. But hey, we can always hope.
if they didn't do it for the 30th anniversary re-issue, its evident that it will never happen
They should to show their gratitude towards Jason!.
I can sort of imagine Jason having told these guys at some point about Rob:" Don't fuck this up."
What I also like about Jason is his utter respect.

Rob was with Ozzy full time before joining Metallica
He's still there cuz Mexicans don't quit a good job.
Jason saved metallica. Thanx Jazzzzzon
Its truly sad...
Because Jason wasnt meant to be a front man,,, or a solo group...
He was meant to be the bass end high screaming energy force behind Metallica ~
I feel so too.
Great strength and character wouldn’t have treated Jason that way in the first place. Jason is awesome.
These guys don’t realize that Newsted was the best thing to ever happen to them and Metallica as a whole.
Damn right and this EGO thing is what's broken the magic that was here with him in the band.
Uh, did you watch the video? They just spent the whole time admitting their fault in how it went down. They absolutely realize it.
@@tedbertier9454 - did watch the video. Do you believe that or are they just trying to make good ?
Especially AJFA and black album giving Metallica more exposure in the music world.
Awesome stuff - Jason's a legend and his contribution to Metallica in so many ways was immense. Hails Newsted.
....And Justice for JASON!

I have such a triumphant feeling after watching this. Triumphant for Jason, triumphant for Metallica finally realizing what Jason gave for/to them, and triumphant for their legacy because it takes a big person to publicly admit screwing up majorly. Just watch the performances. Jason was nasty on that stage. His energy and playing was awesome.
There is a saying "Too little, too late." Now I get where they are coming from. Age and time have a way of opening your eyes to what was so easy to ignore when you were younger. Not knocking them at all for finally realizing what they did. But now they have to live with that knowledge.
Unfortunate how things ended with Jason but at least they have the balls to admit they were completely wrong on how they treated him
I'm glad they managed to be Friends again in the end and also admitted how out of control and angry they were against Jason in those dark times of theres. They did Jason dirty, and he's a bigger man for walking away from Metallica and being able to go on and get over it.
Btw Metallica without Jason's ridiculously evil backing vocals doesn't sound the same IMHO
Well he had the body of the idea for blackened James added to it
Jason Recorded all the Bass For those albums, dude.
They're really not being apologetic here.... Merely explaining/excusing their actions.
Jason was & will always be my favorite bass player for Metallica
Oooof, hits you in the feels - glad to see them grown, grateful, and introspective - finally giving Jason the praise he deserves….
Hetfield took a thousand turns in his response only to say that he would defend Trujillo but NOT Newsted. It's really stupid to believe that a bassist is superior just for playing with his fingers. Metallica lost too much when Newsted left.
Did they ever put his bass lines back in the And Justice album?
Still not hearing a solid and genuine "sorry" from their mouths for Jason. Their stories and appreciation now, sound like an effort to explain why they were assholes to him...and that's all becasue of public backlash.
They still sold out.
@@richspizzapartyyes they did. The black album wasn’t just a sell-out. It was a betrayal to the Metal community.
