The albums Newsted made are incredible!!
I can’t imagine him having a hit band like that and then papa The Cowardly Lion said “no , kid. That would hurt our profit”
Like he put it in his tell all interview “I was disrespected the most, by the person I admired the most”
I think it was a “screw this, I’m done with all of it!” Moment.
Realizing he couldn’t keep begging these 2 narcissists ( Lars and Het) for some creative input. It was easier just to create your own band and he did it amazingly. However you don’t know much about it cause Metallica didn’t want you listening to Newsted instead of Metallica in Spotify $$$ it hurts their bottom line 😂😂
He literally shut Newsted down by threatening the label He wouldn’t work with the label anymore if they promoted Newsted!!
What an a hole!!! What a baby to throw a temper tantrum like that.

I think him and Jason grew close during Jason's time in the band. I always got the impression that, like with Cliff, Kirk remembered what it was like to be the new guy(Cliff replaced Ron, Kirk replaced Mustaine, Jason replaced Cliff) in the James/Lars show, and knew what it was like to micromanaged by the 2 of them.

Man!! What a huge MONSTER turn around for real…Lars nailed exactly what I was thinking when Jason left. I remember saying how bad are things going in Metallica that this guy who’s dreams came true who not only loved Metallica but looked up to Cliff B and lost it when he heard the news of his death just up and quit his dream job? He never quit because of all the hazing or pranks or when the other three charged everything to his room it was pretty bad but Jason didn’t care but when they clipped his creative wings and forced him into a box and basically told him to just be thankful you’re playing with us no matter what who wouldn’t leave? He made enough money with them to be able to live comfortably for the rest of his life so why not?…to hear how much these guys have grown to look back and say “if Robert suddenly wanted to quit we’d fight for him” and in retrospect they should’ve fought for Jason?…that is some serious growth internally.

Be true to yourself, be a good person, fight for positivity, but that doesn't at all mean you have to be a doormat. And when the fight is too much, when negativity is too extreme i come to find that its best to let it be what it is. If it angers you, let it. If you are going to curse up storm.. do it. Process it and let it pass. But this is only for extreme moments where the usual approach gets flipped. And i find that it works and im over it quickly. They were so guarded, and closed off emotionally, and put up such thick walls between eachother that they inevitably disintegrated because they simply couldn't let anyone in on their turmoil. They covered it up TOO well in interviews and public appearances. It was all a show. The band was falling apart for years and no one knew. SKOM kind of broke those barriers down and showed people it's ok to have these necessary conversations.

There is an insane amount of pain and disappointment in their body language as they talk about Jason in this manner. James sums it up in a very deep way. They wanted Cliff. Instead they had this kid who was playing their friends parts. Jason was the "replacement" for Cliff, but there is no replacing him. So these angry little boys have to keep playing music they wrote with their friend who is no longer living. They had to relive so many things over and over everyday for years. And the whole time, there's Jason in a Cliff tee shirt reminding them of what they used to have. Jason saved the band and probably the lives of the other three. They could've wound up broke, and with drug habits. They could have brought in the wrong person, and that guy could've have ruined them...there are so many different ways it could have ended. Jason prevented all of that. He held them together, and let them heal at their own pace. And when he left, it forced them to look at reality and change things before it killed them all.

I really thought Jason was, 'it' after Cliff died, and was shocked when he's left the band, and what caused him to want to leave.
I was just as surprised when they picked Rob for his replacement too.
Rob's a great bassist, but he was like rent a bassist at that point, he'd been a part of so many bands!
But, I completely understand WHY they chose Rob too. I honestly thought he would be temporary, but here we are, 20 years later, and he's still here.

    • @Jayteaseepiirturi
      @Jayteaseepiirturi Рік тому +12

I don't think I'll ever completely understand Rob! :D But hey, he's the man and he inspired me to start playing bass without a pick. And if Met are happy with him, then my job is to friggin' deal with it. But having that said, who else would it even be. It's crazy that even after 20 years I'm like "oh, the new bassist". It's really stupid.
When you come to think of it, Robert is in certain ways like Jason. He's his own kind of a beast onstage. Maybe a tad goofier person... but I somehow feel 72 is his album. He instigated it. I must be imagining things but I somehow feel he had his hands on everything about it.

Jason helped drive Metallica where it was trying to go. Lars and James were obviously the initial creative force behind the music but Jason really pushed their idea with whatever control he was given. Sometimes you don't always get full control over bettering something so you gotta accept that your placed where you are with certain buttons and controls and Jason didn't let that slow him down, he went 100% with the buttons he was allowed to push in Metallica. He was pedal to the metal with what little control he had. Of course he tried to push further but never got to escape from that box they'd put him in. But in that box he still made all the noise he could with full energy and love.

And the only reason he has so little writing credits is because the majority of his stuff that he sent to them at that time was apparently like fast, Thrashy stuff like their earlier work, and Metallica weren’t looking for that at that time. But then you’ll have outliers like My Friend of Misery and Where the Wild Things Are that aren’t that and would be the kind of stuff that Lars and James would pick out from his material.
Lars and James are already great on their own at producing stuff, but if they like it enough, they’ll draw in ones from the other band members, though not to simply appease them as band members and take in whatever they got.

I met Metallica in 1997, and by then my fandom was on its way out, so they weren’t gods to me. Lars couldn’t be bothered more than to give a quick wave from afar. James insulted my friend by commenting and joking about his birthmark. Kirk was quiet and didn’t say much. But Jason was so awesome. Hung out before the show and after. Spent a lot of time talking about gear and other bands. Gave us food. He didn’t leave until he literally had to go. Just a real down-to-earth, level-headed dude with zero ego or façade of self-importance. I’ll never forgot how he was, as well as the other three. And any interview I’ve seen since, he’s still that dude, and they try to pretend they still aren’t the douchebags I met some 27 years ago. Maybe they’ve changed, it can certainly happen over three decades, but I get a sense they really haven’t, but maybe that experience just tarnished my opinion to the point I’ll never see them any different.

As much I loved Cliff, I have to give major applause to Jason. He did save Metallica, he helped them climb out of the deep hole that Cliffs death caused. Plus, he was able to handle the pressure of him trying to replace an unreplaceable icon. Not to mention all the stuff that James, Lars and Kirk said, being a punching bag for the band. I was a hardcore Metallica fan up until the black album… I stopped being a fan, partially because I was young and stupid (23 years old) and partially because I was starting to lean heavily into the punk scene. I thought they “sold out”, but listening to them talk now about their respect for Jason, I’m finding a newfound respect for them. I’m older now too and many of my opinions have changed, I’ve grown up in a lot of ways just as they did. I think I’m gonna give them another chance, and give myself another chance too.

      They still sold out.

@@richspizzapartyyes they did. The black album wasn’t just a sell-out. It was a betrayal to the Metal community. I have a very strong love/hate relationship with Metallica, and I don’t know which one is stronger: my love for their first 4 albums, or my hatred for them selling out and betraying the Metal community.
