I think Jason doesn't get the credit he's deserved, he seems like a very stand-up guy and very down to earth.
What credit exactly?
@@ChuukeseStink I think he's just passed off as a 'talent-less jobber' bassist for Metallica to fill a slot in their timeline, but I think he was a decent member of the band. Sure, he's no Cliff Burton, but nobody is or will be. Think of this example as someone saying Ringo Starr wasn't the best drummer for The Beatles; no, he wasn't flashy and this and that, and I've heard so many drummers say they could have played the part better, but I think that they both (Ringo and Jason) played their parts very well respectively.
@@darrellrickles4365 You need to listen The Beatles better. Ringo was a fucking MACHINE, especially for his time. Listen Jason's audition in 1986. He could play just as good as Cliff, if not even better.

Jason looks like the awesome uncle we never had
I thought that was Dave Ellefson
The Chair Tosser ellefson is the father uncle
Jack Quantrell that's so funny you said that because he actually kinda looks like one of my uncles but his aneurysms are exactly the same as my uncles, it's so weird!
I lol-ed so hard at this.
funny metallica always treated him like a crazy cat lady aunt
Holy shit. How amazing is it that Cliff Burton's parents were there to give Jason their stamp of approval? What a great moment.
that is so cool !
Absolutely! Must have really been something for Jason, I’m sure he treasures that moment to this day
Yes and Ciff Burton's mother even hugged him
😢 Me when he said that. Cliffs parents were awesome in ever documentary interview I've ever seen.
RIGHT?! Awesome too bad focking Lars & James couldn't extend the same respect dicks
EASILY the most personally liked member of Metallica.
Former member
The wank off sessions and jizz spewing that people are giving him though. Good guy but his arse must be shiny af by how many people are constantly sucking on it.
Only likeable Metallica member after Cliff died....
Cliff was a really likeable person too
Thesortvokter Kirk is likeable too
Cliffs parents came to give Jason their blessings. Very touching

That was so deep. Paused the vid and took a moment to reflect.
Tsukamaki I got the chills when he,said that....
Can't believe the parents of the guy he replaced were nicer to him that the bandmates. What a bunch of immature, egotistical twats.
ThePandema They really were back then. You could say it was all caused by the fact that they got their fame and wealth when they were so young, always touring or recording music, then you add the divorces during the 90’s, James alcohol addiction which worsened his problems he already had with trying to control everything in the band, but it really wasn’t until Robert Trujillo joined that they started to come back down to Earth
Brian Johnson said that Bon Scott's family did the same for him when he got the job as AC/DC's singer. Cool stuff.
I miss his brutal background vocals!!
30 year anniversary gig, with both Robert and Jason on stage... pure gold , might be the best Metallica ever sounded
Totally agree. Very strong vocalist. Ever since James blew out his voice, I've always wondered why James had to be so much in control that Jason couldn't have taken over lead vocals. Load and Re-Load would have been very different albums. Certainly St Anger, if it even existed at all, would have been much, much more palatable.

Dude is all class in this interview. Humble and polite.

Jason is a genuine cool dude from everything I’ve ever seen about him.
I wish he could have stayed with the boys, but he has no regrets, Rob does a phenomenal job, and at this point they’re all on good terms with each other as best as I can tell.
That's just Jason. Way too humble for the douches that are James and Lars

I love how someone like Gene Simmons tries to prove that he's the coolest guy around in these types of situations, but Jason just sits there and IS the coolest without breaking a sweat
Kiss should have rolled up that carpet years ago. Ace was their ace in the hole. Anyone but the original four isn't even treated like they have any say in that silliness. and it doesn't matter how good they are. Now Eric Carr made some contributions but why would he sing "Beth" which was Kiss's highest charting single on the Peter Criss album . Why put that on the smashes thrashes and hits, it might as well been sung by engelbert humperdinck instead. Crap like that is exactly what that arrogant donkey's ass face does. Gene is mean and must ween by sucking spleens green for Harvey Weinstein in dreams topped with cream.
Thank YOU
One thing is to be a rockstar cool which translates into a mix between asshole and jerk AND another is the humble cool.
I'm a KISS fan. Seen them live 25 times. Love Gene, but...I just wish Gene could make peace with his fame and understand that he has influenced so many people it's incredible. Maybe more than any other bassist ever, and just be HUMBLE about it. When you have a guy as cool as Jason who idolizes you, be grateful and humble about it and just say thanks. Gene would be universally loved if he would just do that.
grantorino2009 gene will never be universally loved. He is an arrogant entitled asshole to the core

John Z Kirk and Rob never had ego problems either and James is a different person now. Lars is pretty cool too, but in the end it's still up to you who you like and not, so yeah...
yeah...idk about Lars there.
Kevin McDonald Lars is still an asshole
Arvind Shastri why?
James was pretty cool from 83-86 after that he became a bit of dick 87- Bob Rock era because people thought he was too silly backatage but he's now cool again. Lars has always been annoying but back then he wasn't as bad. Kirk, Cliff, and Jason have always been chill guys.
He never gets the credit he deserves for the lines he laid down on Justice
I know, not to mention that the cunt Lars had the bass parts cut way down because he said Jason was drowning out his shitty drumming
Justice has bass lines????
@valerie c. We didn't really get to hear Jason's work on Justice until Metallica worked on their own Guitar Hero game, where we got to listen to and play along with the bass on One, The Shortest Straw, and Dyer's Eve. Dyer's Eve in particular has some *insane* bass work.
MetalSmasherGaming Dyers Eve is insane. Period

Pretty heavy to know that the Burtons embraced and supported Newsted and the Metallica guys were nothing but shitbags to him.
That's a bit dramatic. Metallica were shitbags to him? They made him rich, and besides he was always free to leave if felt he was shat upon.
BenFoe Pee made him rich... saints they are
I'm sure they had good times together but they never forgot how he replaced someone they never wanted gone.
They embraced him for a time but they were kids dealing with the death of their brother and before they could learn to deal with such a tragedy had him replaced. They were just kids and people sometimes think with their hearts instead of their minds. They also bought into the the frat boy initiation process.
its a lot bigger actually, they turned down his bass in albums, they didnt include him in many songwritting ownership credits, they heckled him all the time, they didnt want to do my friend of misery live ,one thing i saw him talk personally about was that they made a "deal" that metallica is their main project and no one can do anything else so Jason couldnt experiment or do something else without leaving, meanwhile James was doing shit like making a song for south park
they literally had to go to therapy for this shit its more complicated than any of us will know
Trust me, I only have respect and love for Trujillo, but I still miss Jason. just his vocals and awesome attitude is something that's a thing of beauty. It'd be cool if he played a show here and there with Metallica. I don't want Rob out of the band or anything, I just really, really miss Newsted.
Same...
Cliff was there for the badass thrash years, Jason was there for their dominant years ( the black album ) and rob is there for the bands golden years. That's how I like to think of it anyway
I won't trash you for your opinion, but I can't seem to understand how you consider Metallica's golden years are after the Black Album. Unless you're talking about their success. But if you mean quality, Metallica's golden years were definitely Kill em All, Ride the Lightning, and Master of Puppets.
Stacci Guma golden years means height of success.
I feel the same way
Imagine Jason’s backing vocals on something like “spit out the bone”or “Broken, Beaten, Scarred”. I bet it would have been sick
i always sing "spit out the bone" like jason
Jason Newsted is without a doubt my favorite Metallica member and absolutely the most lovely man of the band. He is such a humble and real stand up guy. He was a loyal soldier for Tallica and deserved better.
When I see Jason I click. I miss him. Robert is awesome but to me Jason was the Metallica.
Aram K , I agree with you 110% on that one. I've always loved his personality, his style, I mean, he was the coolest fucking guy in the band. To me, the most bad ass guy in the band. And damn do I feel sorry for his strings and his picks because he fucking hammers them things like an he's cutting a tree down! lol. Cheers, pal!
Yep yep, after Cliff died Jason took the torch, he still should hold the torch. Robs a good bassist and should be with a band no doubt about that but Jason just fills that spot better
me too, I love this guy. He was (and still is) the smartest guy in metallica.
Aram K Cliff Burton is Metallica. But he's dead so... I guess Jason Newsted takes the place. Robert Trujillo is more Ozzy Osbourne
I agree. Jason had the most stage presence of anyone in the band. The band has never recovered since his departure. They should bring him back not only for bass, but for vocals. His vocals are vastly superior to James' today.
Jason was smart enough to learn the Metallica set list for his audition. So easy and obvious and probably no one else did it. Brilliant strategy to get a job.
I played in bands for years and it is amazing how many people showed up to auditions not knowing any of the music you play. The ones who always got the job were the ones that put in the time and effort to come prepared
Jason seems like he could be anyone’s best friend! Great human being!
His voice starts to shake while talking about Cliffs parents. Damn, that's some emotional shit.
When he was talking about Cliff’s parents... that hit me right in the feels😥
11:20 "Not just any bass amp head" *Continues reading question like there wasn't a story there*
Thank god Jason interrupted Graham to tell that story. I was like, bro, you're not gonna ask about that?
Duude... Right?... I mean, you can tell that Jason loves storytelling and they kept editing a lot of the stories he went on and went on, but about that bass head, I wasn't the only one wondering how a multimillionaire musician could care so much about a "falling bass head" and nooooww we know. Sentimental value is priceless, no doubt.
Exactly, come on bro. Jason is trying to tell him and he wants to ask the next question. Just like the ATV accident. Kid was like “oh yeah”, he had no clue

Metallica still kicks ass:)
BenFoe Pee He grew up with Metallica when Newstead was part of the band so that's his favourite line up.. What's your point you're trying to make, you muppet?
100% Agreed!!!
Would've loved to see Metallica live with either Cliff and Jason, so i could compare... But 3 weeks before i was born, Cliff died. Jason in my opinion is a better fit to Metallica than Rob will ever be. Sad they did'nt allow Jason to do some other projects while Lars, James and Kirk were having time off with their families.. St anger is by far the most underrated album ever
When Jason mentions that the Black Album routinely sells about 4,000 to 5,000 copies per week, he is not exaggerating. As of the week that I post this (November 7, 2017) the Black Album is in it's 455th week on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart (#139 this week if you're wondering). Currently only 5 albums in all of Billboard's chart history have spent more weeks on the Top 200: 5) My Fair Lady Soundtrack at 480 weeks; 4) Journey's Greatest Hits, 485 weeks; 3) Johnny's Greatest Hits from Johnny Mathis, 490 weeks; 2) Bob Marley and the Wailer's greatest hits album Legend, 494 weeks; and the kings of the Billboard Top 200.... Pink Floyd with their groundbreaking album Dark Side of the moon, 933 weeks (!). First of all, what a strangely eclectic grouping of musical tastes, right? Johnny Mathis, Metallica, Pink Floyd, Bob Marley, Journey... My Fair Lady?!? But this is all of 60+ years of chart history in play, so I get it. It's just amazing that on a weekly basis, year in and year out, 4 or 5 thousand people on average buy the Black Album every week and keep it charting. Is The Black Album this generations' Dark Side of the Moon? Well, maybe!
Palpatine 77 are u serious? Whos buying it nowadays? Thats cool if its true!

Nah, I think he’s a good interviewer. Makes people feel comfortable. Sometimes you miss an obvious Segue. I’ve interviewed over a hundred people, I can tell you, it happens.
@rj zander You must be a non Metallica Fan. Of course Cliff will always be the number 1 Metallica bass legend. Jason eventually brought a lot to Metallica. Remember, the power of his backup vocals? Next I have seen Metallica Live in concert about 12 times. My first time seeing them was in Cincinnati in 1985. I was 15. The last time that I saw them with Jason was in 2000 and the band was incredibly tight, playing extremely well.
@@taotuhao5969 Jason is a legend. I love Robert Trujillo as well but... Metallica has never been the same since Jason left. Cool. If Lars is still alive and they ever want to make a sequel to Some Kind of Monster in 2030, then he can film himself auctioning them off at Sotheby's for yet another couple of millions.
Jason said Lars was very supportive of him from the start. He encouraged him and I believe actually introduced him to some influential people
I do know he GAVE one to, Joe Satriani
He fokn left the baaaand
And I was fortunate enough to be at one of the , if not THE very first Flotsom (at that time, "The Dogz") show that they performed. It was on the anniversary of Randy Rhoads' death that a few local bands in Phoenix were doing in honor. To this day I can remember in detail The Dogz and Jason's performance. He was playing this cheap Hondo II Explorer bass and just KILLING IT! Me, as a young up and coming bass player myself. He caught my attention and inspired me so much. As I got into the local band scene. I got to know Jason a little bit just in passing from time to time. Talking music, bass stuff and Iron Maiden with him every once in a wile. He was such a down to earth guy back then. Never had a big head. When he made it in Metallica. I felt that if anyone in the local music scene back then deserved it. It was him. Because of that. I have followed his career over the years. Every interview up to this one I have seen. It still the same old Jason. I can tell he never changed or ever went ROCK STAR. He was one of my bass heroes and influences( along with Geezer and Steve Harris) way before Metallica and Flotsom. I have been proud of him.
Cool story!
Luka Cee pove itttt
Not being a Metallica fan but having known them all my life, it shocks me to realize until know how a sweet and cool dude Jason is :)
Jason was always the man...loved seeing him live with Metallica. He never stopped
Jason is the best great personality
He's such a cool and down-to-earth guy. Must appreciate that. All the best to Jason, wherever you are!
im a simple man i see jason i click
whenever I see Jason
Motta7000 why didn’t Jason do more after leaving Metallica
Me too I see Cloud and I click like
always loved Jason, that dude was just metal to the core. Even when Metallica were drifting away from metal in the Load days he was going around with his Voivod shirts and doing the growling vocals on all the old kill em all stuff.
"That's where Rob Van Dam is from!"
"...k"
The Whole F'n Show !
The way he looks to his left as well
He should go tell RVD "thats where Jason Newsted is from". Its much more interesting
I think it’s fair to say Jason never heard of rvd
0:41= That's where Rob Van Dam is from..
JASON: Okay...(looks to the side..."who the hell is Rob Van Dam???), lol
Third Herd he’s a wrestler
If he knew wrestling...😁
Jason's like "who the hell is that?" 😆
Right!?
👎"The Whole Fucking Show"👎 Rob Van Dam
That split second pause before he mentions the Burton's ❤
jasons persona and sheer talents are the reason a lot of bass players aspire to him,he's just a really cool guy.and he certainly knows his shit.
I never knew about the Burtons passing the torch to him. I’m in my early 40s and while Burton was the man, Newsted will always be MY Metallica bassist.
Jason seems like a really cool, really normal guy. Thanks for the mini-interview. Seriously, good job.
Damn Jason turned into a hot, cool dad who's into rock music. I like it.
He's so grounded, such a nice guy, bonded to the funs and music.he really loves whats he's doing...no question he left.
As he said at the "some kind of monster" documentary...it was such a lame that the biggest band in the world couldnt work things up
I could listen to him tell stories all day. I haven't heard anyone love music as much as he does.
Most underrated metal bassist along with Rex Brown.
Thought Jason has been considered one of the greatest, surpassing Gene Simmons.
What did Rex Brown ever do besides follow Dimebag’s rhythm guitar? Not a god damn thing. The rest of the band used to joke about him getting a free ride. They had a nickname for him behind his back but I can’t remember what it was.
cnvw974 bro Gene Simmons is an average at best bassist lol
The Dallas Space Cowboy and David Ellefson
I think Ryan Martinie is very underrated
Rob Van Dam? Lol. Definitely not random as hell.
Hammad Khan RVD!!!
First thing I thought too, but Jason totally had no idea who that was. LOL
Hammad Khan He's badass, You can tell that he's a WWE fan
Hammad Khan ROB
VAN
DAM
RVD❤️
Every interview I've seen with Jason demonstrates he's a class act and a good human. Rock on!
This guy did such a spectacular job at following into cliff’s footsteps... respect
He looks like Lou Reed now
BirdsElopeWithTheSun well, not quite now...
Bwahaha...
he is the table?
But Lou Reed is dead. Jason must look a lot better now...
Omg! I was thinking that also. He does resemble Lou Reed but thankfully plays a bit faster.
a very intelligent and articulate man
I certainly hope things go well for him
dont worry about him....is net worth about 500million...lol...🤘
I'm sure he's not complaining about life.
*AMAZING INTERVIEW!!! TY!!!*
Jason looks like the kind of guy your parents would trust to watch you when you were a kid, but he would party all night with you and drink beer.
I understand your sentiment but I think that's a pretty poor assessment
