Listen to Anthrax - they`ve always put the bass way up in the mix, and it`s tight. Metallica`s songs would be amazing with that kind of mix / production.
If I ever make a record with a band I will be intent on making the bass as big and audible as possible. I'm not a bass player but records where you hear the bass just sound so much better, it's probably the one thing about Metallica and a lot of metal bands that sucks the most. The bass just gets drowned out or is virtually non existent yet you listen to a band like Tool and the bass is so present it makes everything sound so much more tight.
Amen. I can't understand why Metallica has so little bass presence, especially being as influenced by NWOBHM bands as they were. Listening to a lot of those bands, the bass is usually up there, good and loud, with its own space in the mix, and it sounds killer. Metallica themselves had this sound going somewhat on their cover of "Blitzkrieg", one of their best sounding tunes imho.
Dude Everyone know what Cliff was for Metallica, his fingers in the first albums from Metallica are priceless, but my boy Roberto is in another level, damn. He deserves more in Metallica for real
I know some parts in extremely rapid-beat songs are almost impossible to play with fingers even if you use all 4 of your fingers to pluck, but it's still odd to see Robert Trujillo using a pick when playing bass. I still dig him. Probably one of the fastest fingerstyle bass players there are right now I've seen. Incredible. As hard as I try I cannot play that fast unless I cheat and skip a note here and there throughout the measures.
Me being a Latino and American I am really proud of Mr. Trujillo and Metallica for giving him a chance on that Amazing Metal Band. Saw the video on when they afford him that sign on Bonus. That was freakin awesome.
I honestly couldn't say much about the mix, other than it hurt my ears when I first tried to listen to it. The sheer compression alone was unpleasant, never have listened to the entire thing.
I was there and it was amazing OMG i remember robert playing his bass helicopter technique and it sounded amazing but what blew my mind was his crabwalk bass skill that sounded out of this world. Not even cliff could do that on bass. Sorry cliff fans but it is what it is
Too bad you can't here shit when he plays live its like he's bass is toned down I bet it has something to do with that contract agreement he signed when joining metallica cause he has so much potential
It's a shame that basically every Metallica album is kinda lacking in bass. I guess that's a draw back to deep chugging guitars that it kinda covers up the bass.
no, that's not how it works. The drums are the only thing they record playing all at once, all the other instruments are recorded everyone on it's on. You can see both James and Kirk doing what Rob is doing here.
When most bands record, it's common for band members to do their part and step out. After you've rehearsed the song 250 times, recorded it over many hours, you don't want to hear the guitarist or bass player doing 50 takes to get it "just right". The producer is the guy driving the show at that point, then the band listens and they might come back in to do alterations.
listen to load and reload. you can hear bass perfectly on those albums. also on kill em all. and frankly i don't have any problem with hearing bass on death magnetic, exept on some parts
You understand that when he stands in the power stance, he's actually pushing his bass forward, and tilting it upward, and he's bent over it more often than not. Doing this allows him to see his bass more clearly, and help to not fuck up the music he's playing.
Exactly. On the ...And Justice For All album, you can barely hear the bass. But if you listened to enhanced bass, you can hear what Jason is doing. I think that if they turned the bass back up to the Master of Puppets album, than it would be AWESOME.
LOL this guy is so badass, even while recording he plays in a powers stance.
Also, the tone on that bass is unreal...
Rob is a beast on that bass. Even better - he's just a decent cool guy who loves to rock out.
oh ya? U know him personally to say that? how do u know he ain't a dick when the tape is off
@@deangelobayley7079 No likes for you.

Rob brings the absolute fire to these records.
I love the sound of his bass
What don't kill ya makes ya more strong!
Aaron Gentry makes ya mo stong
Aaron Gentry mo killings mo problems
Aaron Gentry I cant seem to find which song that is!
+Robert Rossignol Broken Beat & Scarred
+Aaron Gentry mo strong
I love the way he just rocks out while recording.
At 9:00 always listen to what the bass player says,he is often the only one with music theory knowledge!
Benoit Gionet it's just knowledge of the major/minor scales....
7:43. Man! I thought he was gonna break into some old Infectious Grooves there. Intro to Punk it Up.
yes!
Rob is a beast of a bassist!
Listen to Anthrax - they`ve always put the bass way up in the mix, and it`s tight. Metallica`s songs would be amazing with that kind of mix / production.
Kirk - "Let me ruin this with some wah."
Whitest White Ahhh :( I liked the wahhh
Whitest White Did you mean let me ruin this by being Kirk Hammet?
i love these videos of bands working you learn so much love it and he is a fucking great bass player
absolutely man!! my thoughts are exactly the same! :-)

JoRdOguitarman1 it's why Iron Maiden have such a distinct sound
Sad fact is, you'll do what the producer wants. That's his job
I like Megadeth because the bass is huge in the mix compared to Metallica in the earlier Metallica albums the high end of the bass was present
Amen. I can't understand why Metallica has so little bass presence, especially being as influenced by NWOBHM bands as they were. @@tomsumner7746 well for iron maiden the bass would have to be loud since the bassist is literally the leader of the band in iron maiden.
This dude makes BASS playing look so badass lol
They definitely didn't use his, "what don't kill ya makes you more strong" vocal in that song.
duhlike haha
Trujillo is truly a natural what an awesome talent he cliffs cliff and Jason their is no comparison he kicks bass
Sheesh! What a great bassist!
4:40 ... Well FUCK!
Dude
Everyone know what Cliff was for Metallica, his fingers in the first albums from Metallica are priceless, but my boy Roberto is in another level, damn.
He deserves more in Metallica for real
Thank you Rob for great bass playing!
You can tell when someone just isn't putting on a show. Their expression and movement is just natural enjoyment, not some gimmick.
1:10 - 1:22 Rob sounds like a Beast!
i just went down in the comments section and gave a bunch of thumbs up to all these awesome comments. you guys are awesome.

lol he is so positive
Damn.....You are good Rob, damn good!
Love Trujillo!!!
This man is my idol
This guy's cool. I like when he does "badass bass face".
This dude needs more recognition...i play guitar but any musician gives credit where major credit is due.
Me being a Latino and American I am really proud of Mr. Trujillo and Metallica for giving him a chance on that Amazing Metal Band. Saw the video on when they afford him that sign on Bonus. That was freakin awesome.
Rob earned his spot, he was better by miles of any other person auditioning. The man saved Metallica.
I must say... robert is one badass bass player.
What a bad ass.
gotta love this guy...
Great bass player. Cool to see him tracking parts.
he is such an awsome guy :)
Rob has such an awesome tone °-°
Lol I wanna play bass now
I think Rob is such a nice person you'll ever meet. Imo
Rob "The Beast" kicks ass dude! He's awesome!
It doesn't matter how good it plays. The final recording will have the bass barely audible
Lol.this. I wonder why they even have a bass player

that sound is so mighty
tremendoooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rob is ready to launch anytime. Must be odd to just go home after a day at the studio, looks like he could go on the tour bus right away.
Rob..# 1.....♥
Bass has generally never been that prominent on albums. Its a pity that the mixes were messed up for DM. These are fat sounding bass lines.
they were fucked up for justice also :(
I agree, the songs in my opinion were great but the mix was just fucked up
Fawaz Azim which is odd, I mean what’s more metal than the most haunting, loudest, and lowest note capable on stage?
@@Cr4nium13 yeah, that's an understatement, the drums have fucking DISTORTION on the the original mix
I honestly couldn't say much about the mix, other than it hurt my ears when I first tried to listen to it. The sheer compression alone was unpleasant, never have listened to the entire thing.

It's a shame that basically every Metallica album is kinda lacking in bass. I guess that's a draw back to deep chugging guitars that it kinda covers up the bass.
You need to get yourself some good headphones.
I should clarify I do not mean bass frequencies of which there are plenty. I mean the literal bass guitar parts.
You are kinda right but you can't ignore the bass sound in RTL and MOP albums, and the clear bass intros at Black Album. For the rest, i agree.
It's there but it's nowhere near as preset as on Kill 'em all which probably had the best bass sound.
Reid Merrill i agree, and i especially find this lacking because trujio is a goddamn BEAST!
Cool!!
4:41 - Oh Rob, That's so sweeet! :D
rob trujillo lml
If the level of the bass was around that of Iron Maiden, it would sound amazing.
He has a good voice.
yes. as a bassist myself if they just up the volume a notch or two it would be flawless.
Trujillo is the fuckin man.
so basically they recorded the whole songs without rob then sent him to record alone ... poor rob
no, that's not how it works. The drums are the only thing they record playing all at once, all the other instruments are recorded everyone on it's on. You can see both James and Kirk doing what Rob is doing here.

Gaz SS cold attitude wen they trow million of buck at you
From my experience too, out of all instruments, bass is usually last.
Drums, guitars, bass, vocals.

the judas kiss part with the pick sounded awesome

7:43 intro to punk it up by infectious grooves :D
9:25 although very short, very cool. That sounds like "My Apocalypse."
4:15 that's the flamenco guitar riff Robert was playing, didn't know they tried it out as a song, and only used part of it to All Nightmare Long.
You understand that when he stands in the power stance, he's actually pushing his bass forward, and tilting it upward, and he's bent over it more often than not. Doing this allows him to see his bass more clearly, and help to not fuck up the music he's playing.

you are fast as hell with plucking but you got any tips for fast downstrokes on bass I play guitar bass drums and vocals.?
