@@fase1doughnut Makes sense. That one guy with the lighted up fret board sounds absolutely horrible. The thing is, there are a TON of bassists out there that can play Metallica flawlessly....thing is they are either already in other big bands or don't have the big stage experience. 3:19 - Lars marvels that Rob's playing on "Sad But True" was "flawless". In a recent interview, Rob has said that he didn't really know "Sad" at the time of the audition, but he picked up on the feel of it right away. Proving there's a lot more to being a great musician than knowing what notes to play.
Rob had it in the bag as matalicias bass playr for 2 reasons one he played with his fingers on battery and when Lars suggested to play a beat and Jams just said just fallow me and rob held the free style with no sweat
A lot of guys could do this gig. Shit... I could play bass on this gig and I'm primarily a drummer. But I just watched a soundcheck video and RT was sound checking like it was a full show. He is always "on". Plus he payed his dues for many many years. He deserved it.
Everything that Jason thought they should do, that they all dismissed as weak and not possible, and that their management blocked, they ended up doing. They took a year and a half off, they started talking to each other. He saved this band twice. 1st by joining, taking every bit of shit they threw at him and never saying a word. 2nd by leaving. He forced them to deal with all their issues and calling them out on their bullshit. Jason is the true heart of Metallica.
It's not like the other guys didn't know how to play, but Rob just brought that energy with him and just had fun playing and being himself instead of standing there all tensed up and being intimidated by the situation. Having that energy and drive is so important, especially for a band that is so dedicated to touring!
Watching this, every other person trying out either looks scared, or stiff, or just doesn't look the part. Rob's stance and guitar angle and energy just pumped a shot of life back into the other guys.
0:41 Body language doesn't lie. Lars and James were practically in shock. They played cool. But inside them, the flame was reignited by Robert's genuine energy.
Rob brought an undeniable presence as well as confidence in his skills. Kick ass player who loves what he's doing and adds a huge energy to the stage. 🤘🏻😎
I always loved when Lars says to Rob,we want to show you we're serious and give you a million dollars for joining our band to get you pumped up and feeling good. The expression on Rob's face is genuine and awesome \m/
@@roddydykes7053 they cut the scene too early in this video. In the full clip, they sit him down (Rob didn't know he had been officially chosen still) and explain that they're choosing him and committing to him. He's blown away.
I think what got Rob into the band is not just his skill on Bass, but his overall confidence, and his energy. The other guys were good, but Rob was ecstatic.
Indeed. Rob had a good resume as well. Suicidal Tendencies, Infectious Grooves, and Ozzy. If you've never checked out Infectious Grooves before, I recommend it, Rob's bass licks are superb, he was very much a master of his instrument way before he ever auditioned for Metallica.
Fascinating to watch nowadays. Pepper Keenan and Chris Wyse could have eventually made it work, but Twiggy and Danny Lohner, uhhh not a chance. I have a feeling they were only invited because they were used to huge tours and huge audiences, so they'd have no trouble hanging. Robert was the complete package of skill and experience. Easy choice
Pepper and Chris weren't any better than Twiggy and Danny. If anything, Twiggy was the best out of the batch aside from Robert. If he seemed out of place it was probably because it was too slow for him. He was in death and speed metal bands before playing with Manson.
@@SegaGenesis92 That's pretty interesting to learn about Twiggy. It's kinda hard to imagine such amazing players being with Manson when you look at the simplicity of his songs. I would have never known how insanely good of a guitarist John 5 is if I hadn't heard his solo stuff. Obviously Twiggy is the same way.
I remember seeing Metallica open for Ozzy Osbourne in 1986, for the ultimate sin tour in California and when Metallica hit the stage I was in the first two rows the whole place went nuts it's a shame Cliff died in the bus accident but I got to see them before he died I'm glad they found somebody after these tragic events and were able to carry on
I grew up with Jason. But have seen the band with both Jason, and Rob . Musically there isn't any drop off. But rob really brings a different energy to the show.
I saw Cliff with Metallica on the 86 tour supporting Ozzy, Nassau Coliseum Long Island. Next time I saw Metallica Jason was on bass, Monsters of Rock tour in LA. Both were kickass shows.
Rob looked and played and acted like he was already in the band & in concert with them live. It wasn't really an audition because nobody else fit with Metallica like Rob. I loved that he got Cliff's tones too. Just perfect. Not even a question really. There was no one better. This video proved that. Nice job Rob.
Rob's audition for Metalica is just like when Mike Mangini auditioned for Dream Theater. He set the bar so damn high that NO ONE was going to come anywhere close to it.
Rob is a great find and fit for this band. He has a great personality and a unique character which really stands on his own. What an incredible moment walking into that room and Metallica welcoming him to the family. I couldn’t even imagine the overwhelming awesomeness of that.
Robert ATTACKED THAT AUDITION! The rest were totally outclassed in Confidence! I've always love Roberts In Yo Face ' style of bass play Rock On Metallica!
I met him at bells beach with Kirk Hammett. He was such a nice guy and happy to pose for a horns up photo with me!! Will never forget that. Thanks Rob, glad you made that role your own!!
I'm amazed that firstly Rob's sound was just awesome, then his skill matched his sound. But those other geezers, heck, did they even bother to tune up their guitars first? For Whom The Bell Tolls, Rob was the only one in tune (or playing the correct notes!). That applause when Rob walked in was awesome, too. I'm a born again Metalifan!
This was my favorite part of the doc. You really felt that all the hard work and staying positive Rob put into his life paid off. His reaction (not shown) when they give him the signing bonus shows that moment really well. Not that it's about the money, but he can't believe he's getting paid to do what he loves and his future is secure doing it.
I saw SKOM when I was in highschool. Seeing it now I realize that what makes rob so great is hes humble. He went in there as kind of a fan of Metallica and seeing it as an opportunity to play with a band he admired and influenced him. Obviously it helps that hes talented as hell. To me his performance proved that he knew the songs which means he is a fan of the band, and definitely prepped for it. Which shows his hearts in it. Definitely the best choice. Hell the only choice I'd say.
Good Choice after all these Years of Headbanging. Metallica is still in my Soul since i was 16 Years old. And here we are around 38 Years later. Banging Our Heads with Metallica against the Posers and Suckers. Rock on.
Perfect example of luck being where preparation meets opportunity. Robert is so in the zone here. He has the material down pat, his technique is on point, hes not nervous at all because he knows he's ready. Its really awesome to watch.
I know he was already in some great bands, but man imagine how it would feel to be chosen for Metallica. Imagine telling your lady or your kids "I'm in one of the biggest bands in the world now." And he's remained the longest standing bassist for the band
Rob seems like somebody who would fit in well with Red Hot Chili Peppers if Flea ever retired --- just a laid back Southern Cali broh who gives off positive vibes!
Exactly. He could do Metallica standing on his head. And beat Kirk at guitar too, lol. He played Flamenco in front of Kirk on video and Kirk was amazed and like "wow, how did you do that?" lol.
My first time seeing Metallica was Robs first show with them on American soil. July 4th, Detroit at the now obsolete Pontiac Silverdome in 2003. All the way from Australia. 🤟
I remember seeing a documentary that had this in it. I remember a scene where they say we want you to be our new bass player and give you a million dollar signing bonus.
Rob was definitely having fun, testing out the Basses, playing to the fullest. I’m sure he was nervous but once the music started and just went all out. And he wasn’t trying to be cool, chill or like a boss. He played his way and it fits. And it’s the reason why he’s still in the band. Granted Cliff was cut short in life but who knows, might’ve left too. Rob was the one the band was waiting for and he makes them sound incredibly better. Two albums and nearly 20 years later, yup he was meant to be there.
@@louisbeltranjr3721 Never said Cliff wasn’t good. I’m talking about Rob’s way of playing. He’s louder and heavier. Because he plays funk music it brings out the other music he plays. That’s why I said if Cliff was around who knows where the band would be today.
@@provisionalhypothesis people still talk about Jason. All 3 Bass players played key roles in the venture of the band. Cliff gave it the jumpstart, Jason guided them and now Rob is the driver. He’s the one taking them to different sounds and views. Which opens the band up more but never forgetting where they came from.
sorry i hate what was said around 2:22 about "they will end up in the same situation as jason" , first jason was in for almost 15 years....He was in four studio albums, . Not to mention all off his tracks were not supported or released on those albums. He did everything he could for them, which has since been acknowledged by everyone. Second...just seriously trying to minimize his impact for what. Rob is great but why do they have to throw shade at Jason to support him?
well, it would be kind of dumb to pick a song themselves, they'd risk the possibility of the bassist not knowing the song and it wouldn't help them at all but, indeed, it's nice of them that they let them pick the song
Rob rips them all. I met Lars, Jason and James outside their studio in NYC while they were mixing/recording the Load album. James a total asshole to us, Jason was in a rush but still gave us a minute and was super nice and Lars hung out with us (my group of four or five and two or three other people who had also heard the rumor of Metallica being in town) for what had to be at least fifteen minutes, perhaps longer. He literally just walked into our group as we were talking about the album and even stood behind my friend (a drummer who idolized Lars) asking us not to say he was there as my friend was talking about Lars. Then Lars made a made fun of his own drumming and my friend turned and started arguing back and it was a couple of seconds before he realized who it was. Then he leaned against the wall and just hung out. We asked him about the new album and he was pretty honest. He told us it wasn't heavy and that he didn't like it. We thought he was joking and he basically said that old school fans won't like it and how right he was (horrible album as were all the albums after Black until Death Magnetic and even Black was just decent compared to the rest of their stuff until that point). I'm not someone who cares one bit about famous people and have never cross the street or run over to meet a celebrity (I see celebrities fairly regularly given I live and work in NYC). It just doesn't do it for me but I went to meet Metallica because I was a teenager and figured it didn't matter if I smoked joints outside my house or outside a recording studio. But it's nice to know that the people who have entertained you for so many hours and have provided the soundtrack of many events of your life are decent people (except for James but he also could have just been in a bad mood). My sister and my wife (then girlfriend) met Kirk the day before and my sister asked for the cigar he was smoking and he gave her the last half. My wife asked him for a cigar too and he gave her a new one and even signed it. We smoked some of the used one and one of my friends used it to roll a joint. I wonder for how much the signed cigar would sell on eBay. It's around twenty years old but I put it in a glass cigar case. I know he smokes Cubans but it's been so long that I have no idea what brand it is. I highly doubt he gave her an expensive cigar and I likely would've remembered that.
I like Lars' demeanor - he gets into what he's talking about and seems passionate about the music and his craft. I was never a huge fan of Metallica - I did listen to Puppets quite a bit and went back to Lightening and then Kill Em' All - basically the Cliff years. As for the cigar part of the story I had a similar experience when I met Chet Atkins (Country guitar legend) waited in the back where he took a shuttle after the show. He finished his cigar and threw it on the ground. Of course I grabbed it after he was gone - I must have lit that thing up 10 times over the next few years.
If she did indeed score a Cuban off Kirk, it would be worth a fair bit. The reason being that real Cuban cigars contain a bit of cocaine because of how/where they're made (also why the importation is tightly regulated).
This was by far my favorite scene from Some Kind Of Monster. The thing I love most about Trujillo is that he is really such a shy, low key kind of guy..UNTIL.... he gets the bass in his hand and then he turns straight beast. He's not some idiot trying to "LIVE" metal by doing ever stupid thing he can to ruin his life. He "FEELS" metal when he plays it. Two very different things to me and I so respect him for becoming and being the artist he is! GREAT PICK METALLICA!!!!
He clearly showed up with the right gear. They said it right off the bat. Those Mesas ain't no joke especially with bass, and I'm sure his was top of the line.
Robert does an extra pull-off/hammer on that clearly sets him apart as the most skilled bass player @1:12. Plus he can go goblin mode the entire time because the riff is unconscious to him, the rest of the dudes are standing there, totally focused, trying not to fuck up. I'd take Robert as well
“We saw Cliff. And me and James were like, he’s in our band, no question. He hit it out of the park. And that’s where it sort of gets interesting, because if Cliff showed up today, maybe he wouldn’t be the guy either” chills man... chills
Was there ever any doubt?! Dude was in Suicidal Tendencies. He can play Metallica standing on his head. lol. I remember when he played Flamenco guitar in front of Kirk and Kirk was like, "wow, what's that and how do you do that?!" lol. So he told him. He is not only a good bassist, but he's got guitar chops too.
@@pekkahyvorinen9440 No "Flamenco" guitar. A direct quote from Wikipedia: "A flamenco guitar is a guitar similar to a classical guitar but with thinner tops and less internal bracing. It usually has nylon strings, like the classical guitar, but it generally possesses a livelier, more gritty sound compared to the classical guitar. And is different in it's features and construction than a classical guitar" There is a whole style associated with it too and it extends even to how they sit and play the instrument and the sound they produce from it.
@@Thunder_Bear_mg I reckon that might have been some of that subtle, dry Scandinavian humour. I mean, he corrected him to 'flamingo'... that's kind of funny.
Rob is an absolute monster bassist, not included here but he and Lars went out drinking the night before and Rob was super hungover during the audition but still killed it.
Just by looking at their names and the previous bands they've played in, it's pretty obvious that Rob's the perfect choice in this band. I mean the guy played with Ozzy Osbourne and Zakk Wylde for god's sake. He's the most metal guy among all of the bassists who auditioned
And he ain't never looked back!!!! Love you Rob!!!! Still so very much happy and proud of you!!!! So CA pride and joy ❤❤❤❤. Thank you for being your band soul and us fans favorite!!!! Keep on going!!!!!
Can't imagine Metallica today without Rob. Imagine if he never auditioned. They would have missed so much energy, power, skill, and showmanship. No one else came close in the auditions.
It surprised me that he was even considered. Not because a question of his talent, but because he's such a big personality in the American metal genre.
The first thing I thought when I saw Pepper was wait, isn't he a guitar player? He plays in CoC and Down. I would much rather see him stay in those projects, even if he thinks the Metallica gig had the greener grass.
With all respect to Jason and Robert, Cliff was a whole different animal all together and we lost a true giant when he died. RIP Cliff Burton, you are always going to be the best player period Metallica ever had.
He is a great musician, he deserves a more creative band. Metallica are stuck in a swamp. They have not made a good album since 1991. Thats over 30 years!

In a recent interview, Rob has said that he didn't really know "Sad" at the time of the audition, but he picked up on the feel of it right away. Proving there's a lot more to being a great musician than knowing what notes to play.
I absolutely agree
100%. Just like those Chad Smith on Drumeo playing to songs he hadn’t heard before.
The Portnoy episodes were good too.
Rob had it in the bag as matalicias bass playr for 2 reasons one he played with his fingers on battery and when Lars suggested to play a beat and Jams just said just fallow me and rob held the free style with no sweat
Trujillo had no competition. Badass dude.
Babass dude. ;-)
yeah, claypool is "no competition".
Agreed!
Pepper coulda done it, he wouldn't have been as good, but he was the closest runner up in my opinion.
A lot of guys could do this gig. Shit... I could play bass on this gig and I'm primarily a drummer. But I just watched a soundcheck video and RT was sound checking like it was a full show.
He is always "on". Plus he payed his dues for many many years. He deserved it.
How have I never seen this? Seeing so many talented musicians from well known bands auditioning for this position all in the same place is insane
I think it’s in the documentary they made. Some Kind of Monster.
Money. Suddenly they're reduced to nobodies in the face of it, imagine the disappointment of just missing out on the lottery
Everything that Jason thought they should do, that they all dismissed as weak and not possible, and that their management blocked,
they ended up doing.
Can't you apply the same to Rob?

No, they'd done all the work.

They definitely did Jason wrong.

ROb is honestly overqualified for the job. But he's very humble and chill and just the state of the band nowadays fits him very well.

I think what got Rob into the band is not just his skill on Bass, but his overall confidence, and his energy. The other guys were good, but Rob was ecstatic.
Rob was the only one who seemed to actually know what he was doing.
Indeed. Rob had a good resume as well. Suicidal Tendencies, Infectious Grooves, and Ozzy. If you've never checked out Infectious Grooves before, I recommend it, Rob's bass licks are superb, he was very much a master of his instrument way before he ever auditioned for Metallica.

@@Heavywall70 yep, Pepper isn't a bass player at all.
He was performing rather than just playing along.
Easy choice
Pepper would have been interesting on backing vocals.
It’s really weird to see you in the comments section of videos that have nothing to do with video games. Awesome.
Haha didn't expect to see SNES drunk here.
Rob seems like the most down to earth dude. He can also shred on bass when the band lets him. Definitely a great choice.
RIP Cliff, we miss Jason; but Robert Trujillo is the LEGEND! He's in Metallica for 20 years! GREAT ENERGY! *O7*
And he’s Metallica’s longest serving bassist!
Jason's better off without this gig anyway

Damn right! Infectious Grooves was so awesome
That Infectaphibian thing, man!
He was only with ST for 6 years. But he's been playing since 1978, the guy isn't a kid anymore
Love the organic reactions from the band on Robert. Feels so relatable auditioning musicians.
We'll never know how the other guys would've done, but getting Roberto was one of the top decisions the band has taken.
We do know. Apart from Rob they were all shit lol
Rock on.

Two albums and nearly 20 years later, yup he was meant to be there.

great how they make him decide what to play. Give people a choice and beauty will come.
well, it would be kind of dumb to pick a song themselves, they'd risk the possibility of the bassist not knowing the song and it wouldn't help them at all but, indeed, it's nice of them that they let them pick the song
and he wins by picking battery
Thanks for sharing that story bro!
+5horsemen You're welcome.
Great story dude. He honestly doesn't deserve all the vitriol he gets thrown at him.
