The first time I saw Metallica was on April 26, 1986, opening for Ozzy Osbourne at the Centrum in Worcester, Massachusetts. They still had Cliff Burton.
Brenden Byrne Arena New Jersey. My first time seeing them, not realizing what I was witnessing. Then out comes Ozzy with his glitter robe... Metallica with Cliff 🙏
Slipknot has this same story. They were asked to play Ozzfest 99 because Jack Osbourne was a huge fan lol. It's cool to see two of my favorite bands have a similar story about how they got their break. Ozzy fuckin rules!
Ozzy gave a lot of bands their first big break, I saw Metallica open for Ozzy with Cliff Burton. It's was a great show. I saw the Motley Crue tour also.
Saw that tour in Binghamton NY. @ the Veterans War Memorial Arena, It was a bit before Cliff passed. I was lucky to see them with that lineup. One of my lasting memories as a teenager.
My greatest memory of Metallica...I once yelled so loud over and over "seek and destroy...James actually heard my big mouth and he said and I quote "maybe we'll play it at the encore" I was the only one yelling it the encore came and they actually played it "seek and destroy"...the fact he heard me was worth more than gold
My 1st time seeing Metallica was Feb 1985 ride the lightning tour with armored Saint and WASP!!!! AND WITH OZZY Master of puppets tour, along with 12 other times throughout the years.
I think Lars loves Metallica more than anyone, and tbh I would too if I were him. Imagine being one of the creators of one of the biggest bands of all time and seeing yourself among your heros as colleagues rather than fans? That's an unimaginable dream to come true for most people.
no doubt it helped but they were well on their way before that tour, i remember handing around copies of ride the lightning between my friends and we all new they were destined for greatness!
They were on their way, sure, though I feel Ozzy sped up the ride. Larger audiences, more exposure, some features on MTV, next thing you know, they're the cream of the crop in a few short years. Kudos
Robert Trujillo should have mentioned that he was in Ozzy's band when he successfully auditioned to fill in Newsted's vacancy in 2003, and that Jason had temporarily joined Ozzy after departing Metallica.
Saw Ozzy during that tour with the hopes of seeing up-and-coming metal band Metallica. Unfortunately, due to a rescheduling, they were replaced for a few dates by Blue Oyster Cult. It was only a few months later that Cliff died. That reaction from James of seeing and hearing Ozzy.... reminded me of Jimmy Page air-guitaring to Link Wray. Total glee.
@@JustJeph33 Truth, the crowd were not cool with it. That was a crowd that was definitely expecting Metallica and for most of the set were very vocal about it. And then, they launched into Godzilla and CRUSHED. Not even an angry speed metalhead could withstand the power of the King of the Monsters.
1984: Metallica opens for Venom 1986: Metallica opens for Ozzy Osbourne 1988: Metallica opens for Van Halen 1991: Metallica co-headlines with Guns N Roses Since then everyone opens for Metallica!

James impersonating Ozzy is spot on. True artist
Where?
3:01 maybe?
Maybe not "spot on" but we get the idea.

April 23 ‘86 here in providence and queensryche were an add on for that show !
Golden days

Agora Ballroom Hartford CT Ride the lighting , Wasp and Armored Saint opened.
Love James' not so subtle method of telling Lars to stop talking by playing riffs lmao
James is such a brighter and healthier person these days. Going sober really makes a difference.
How is he doing these days ? I hope he is well, and will remain sober for the rest of his life !
music is worse though

@@adam2178 No its not!

NO mention that Rob played with him for years.
They did mention that. Just not in this clip.
Newsted too no ?
So did Newsted..big deal.
it was probably a 1 hour interview and this is just a 3 min clip of it
Get over it
Love how James randomly starts that riff mid way .
Robert played with Ozzy for years. IMO best Ozzy line was Robert, Joe Holmes and Mike Bordin on drums. Hands down. Round '96.
Zakk Wylde, best Ozzy guitar player
Nah, the original Blizzard of Ozz is the best
@@shure81 no. No. No
@@daveg4236 Yes yes yes
It would be great if Rob shared some stories with Ozzy
Saw this show, Metallica opened up for Ozzy, in Hampton, Virginia just before we lost Cliff. I'm grateful to see the legend perform.

Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne have been so important for keeping metal music going for the last 40 years. The Ozzfest tours were always awesome.
Ozzy made the careers of so many bands possible. It's a no brainer that he's the G.O.A.T. of metal for a reason.
$haron made him to that.
And a woman to stand beside 'im through it all. Love how she took band exposure to another level with Ozzfest
*LAST LIVING LEGEND OF NOT JUST ROCK BUT MUSIC IN GENERAL!*
@@PostUp_Timeno there's still many many legends 😂
Not the GOAT. But definitely the Godfather.
I love love love how they can all just kick into gear and sync up
Love Metallica’s cover of Hole in the Sky
I was there in 1986 when they opened up 4 Ozzy it was f**king crazy !!! R.I.P Cliff you rocked that show !!!
That’s incredible that you Witnessed that!! 😮
Ozzy gave a lot of bands their first big break, I saw Metallica open for Ozzy with Cliff Burton. It's was a great show. I saw the Motley Crue tour also.
So why isn't Metallica taking King Diamond or Mercyful Fate on the road with them?
@@pskully57 Because those bands aren't young or upcoming and they're older than even Metallica is....
Ozzy told them to listen to ‘Symptom of the Universe’, they did and then based their entire catalogue on it.
3:07 James still has that kid enthusiasm 😂

FULL EPISODE PLEEEASEEE
James impression of Ozzy hahahaha
I saw that tour. Thankful I got to see Cliff.
Lars really can talk forever
I have no problem with hearing Metallica stories told by Lars.
he can really spin a solid yarn
Unfortunately yes...
Imagine in those days had just one person clarified that to Ozzy. The amount of collabs etc we could have had...
IMAGINE, HETFIELD MAY NOT HAVE HAD A JOB....IF OZZY WAS TAKEN IN.....IMAGINE....

Good times.

I know, its called a personality...its rare these days...
Imagine not talking in an radio broadcasted interview
I was there. The Nassau Veterans Memorial coliseum when Metallica opened for OZZY. Good times.

Kudos to ozzy. They were absolutely impossible to follow on that tour but he did anyways.
Robert Trujillo should have mentioned that he was in Ozzy's band when he successfully auditioned to fill in Newsted's vacancy in 2003, and that Jason had temporarily joined Ozzy after departing Metallica.
James impersonations are always on point
I think Rob Trujillo was actually in Ozzy's band so they should have let him speak.
He even played in Ozzy's most recent album, ''Patient Number 9''
Ozzy gave a ton of bands their big break. Ozzfest was a killer festival. I would always discover new bands on the sampler cds they released each year.
2:09 that was soo good
2:29 Kirk continues playing the lead to Hole in the Sky.
2:10 hahahah i love how lars starts humming along with james's playing
Ozzy is living legend =)
I love the story of Cliff Burton and Ozzy drinking on Metallica's tour bus when Ozzy was told not to drink! 😂

CONFUSING
I can’t with James playing with Lars mid-sentence😅🤣
Why is this even a thing? I thought we all knew this already? Howard's people need to get with it a little more.
I’ve never heard of this band Metallic. I will check them out.
I remember that tour - wish I would've seen it.
I saw that Ozzy/Metallica tour in 86' at Stabler Arena in Bethlehem Pa
only a real and true band would start breaking into Hole in the sky mid interview!
Saw that tour in cleveland. Awesome!!
I saw them open for Ozzy and met Cliff in the lobby of the Marriott Hotel 🤘🤘🤘
Ozzy went from taking out MOtley Vanilli to talking out an all time great metal band
Ozzy use to break a lot of bands with their first break
MOtley Vanilli? Dont remember them.🤔
cannot wait for the album
We want SXM app available worldwide!
2:10 - Hole In The Sky
Lars conveniently left out the part where their label paid Ozzy's management $100,000 for that opening tour spot.
I seen that tour. Saginaw Mi. 86
James loves ozzy
Lars can talk...."Letz go fuckin wild...?!" Great I needed that.
Ozzy was a king maker back then! Def Leppard, Motley, Metallica, Motorhead [not as big but it certainly got them more US exposure!].
Robert was a member of Ozzys band and knows him probably better than any other Metallica member but wasn't asked a single question by Howard 😕
Good observation! And also quite embarassing to watch..😬
On the Dead Rock Stars podcast, Cliff Burton episode, Mick Wall talks about this and does a hilarious impression of Ozzy😂
Great clip!!!!
that fan reaction was me back in 86 hearing puppets for 1st time
Lars missing the beat at 3:00 when he joins in.

Lars: Starts drumming mid interview
James and Kirk: Programmed to start ripping out of thin air

1984: Metallica opens for Venom
1986: Metallica opens for Ozzy Osbourne
1988: Metallica opens for Van Halen
1991: Metallica co-headlines with Guns N Roses

Oz, sure. Let's give the 'lads' a few years before we go all legend with them, eh?
@Janx79 I think they've done "a few years..." already. And I'm not a Metallica fan. They've earned legendary status surely Janx79?
Let Richard interview them please
What was the song they started to play
We have so much to thank to Sharon Osbourne!!
'what is this racket?'
45 minutes later, Lars shuts up.

I would to thank Howard for using his platform to expose the plight of TDS.

If Jaymz impersonating Ozzy is funny you should see Rob impersonating the heck out of Ozzy
That's funny I can see Ozzy thinking that especially the way his lifestyle was in them days
Ozzy !!!
Just playing Sabbath Bloody Sabbath songs to spur Ozzy is all aces.
And Robert was playing with Ozzy hahaha sorry must have forgotten to mention
Watching James turn into a giddy little kid when the audio started playing
Metallica was already huge in 1986. In 1985 they spended 1 million to buy new studio.
i watch many more interviews with musicians than i listen to music
