"It's jUst a hObbY." This is what I'd tell most family & friends during my first year of guitar playing. Little did they know I'd wake up each morning with the 6 string on my mind. It's strange to see it all play out in a single video. Dig it nonetheless.

man, watching you grow from you popping up on my shorts page when i first started playing guitar to watching you branch out into different genres and even types of content was so awesome and inspiring for me to grow. not just as a guitarist, but as a musician. thank you for sharing mikey ❤
i think the best thing to have when learning an instrument is passion because without passion its hard to find the motivation to actually practice. passion drives you to practice, it makes you want to pick up the guitar and play, it gives you inspiration. its clear that you have a crazy amount of passion and i admire you for that bro
I think tbe best thing is to have Joe piscopo as your dad
@@nikki11679 I didn't even notice the channel name damn 😅
This is a cool look back at your progress! Keep at it, and thanks for inspiring people!
I started string bass in orchestra in 5th grade in 1985 .. got a guitar in 8th grade and have been playing. 36 years … you are sooooo good .. your progression is amazing .. I’m inspired to keep learning
this kinda lit an ignition inside me again as to what it was like to play guitar for the first time. these days I haven't been picking up the guitar because I'm so caught up with everything else in my life, but I realized that I'm still the same kid who had decided to play the guitar and wanted to play for hours on end every single day that I could. and for that I want to pick up my guitar once more and try to finish the hard songs that I once wanted to complete in order to fulfill not just my self esteem, but for the kid that wanted to rock out the entire world. thank you mikey 💛
I think one of the interesting things I've learned over the years is that being good at anything means lots of sucking, repetition and more sucking. It's easy to see someone who's been at it for a few years and say "wow, they're amazing, I wish I could play like that!" What I've learned is you gotta be willing to put in a lot of time and putting small achievable goals to hit. I love playing guitar, it's a journey for sure, but no better feeling then trying to learn a riff or song, you're terrible at first and then you keep at it and then it clicks!
great job man took years of practice and it shows - obsession is an understatement. keep it up bro
Mikey, i want to thank you for bringing me another perspective to guitar. I'm most of the times stuck on playing the same licks and riffs, but your playing has changed me over the last few months. Learning from you, i now try to play other genres than my preferred ones, this has lead me to alter the way i see guitar..
You are a great inspiration of mine, thank you
I've been playing 18 years. Time flies. I really made the most progress as a guitarist in those first 3-5 years. I'm no EVH but I'm comfortable with my skill level for a guy with severe arthritis. For anyone out there getting frustrated in the first year or so, keep at it. It'll pay off.
But how Mikey is finding other live musicians to gig with is honestly beyond me, even at my age. I'm convinced drummers and bassists just don't exist in real life.
The fact that you could do this with your dad is nice. Some can't get that. God Bless you bud.
I'm around 4 months into learning guitar and this was really motivational to keep practicing. Thanks
Awesome video man, thanks for sharing. love it!
Nice! I like it! That's progress right there!
Mate you are slaying it ! Covid was actually pretty well timed for your guitar progress
this video honestly made me a lot more confident and determined to get better at guitar. i’m the kinda person to kinda quit if i’m not automatically good at whatever i’m doing and i’ve been trying to change that recently. i started playing guitar around 2 months ago, so far i absolutely love it and it’s something i would love to pursue, but i get burnt out quickly bcuz of not making crazy progress immediately. seeing someone who, in my opinion, is absolutely amazing at guitar show how they were at the beginning and that you were once at a similar skill level as me made me way more confident, basically showed me that with time, i will get better :)
Same
Loved the video. Really opened my eyes to practice with ups and downs
its not called practicing, its called enjoying playing some dope stuff
BRO U ARE MY IDOL LOLLLL
Thx for inspiring me to don’t quit and keep learning because of you I kept playing and learning the solo of in bloom
This was an awesome video. Thanks so much
bro youre one of my inspirations
Very inspiring journey. Thanks for sharing it with us.
me genuinely tripping when he said “just play what you feel-you don’t have to learn scales if you don’t want to”
this is a great video bro and also really inspiring for me to just keep going ❤
so sick that you started so recently mate
I’m over a year into playing and I feel like I can learn anything I want to now it’s just not having the time to do so is a huge problem for me.. but I will never stop playing.. I absolutely love it
Sweeet progress ❤💯
dude, you're my favourite guitarist on UA-cam
The prom proposal was pretty cool
Wow Mikey, you're a real rock star
Wish I had someone to teach me every day. You’re so lucky
Just wanted to say man that fact that you started at 17 and are this good is insane. I started at that age too I’m 19 now and sometimes it can feel daunting or that I’m like behind the curve compared to all other my age who played guitar. So just want to say I find you really inspiring that you started at that age and not that good I guess it really really just is about practice.
you are my guitar hero with the growing studies and my course i get less time but i still love my strat and wont let it go (its name is phoenix) i am self taught and now playing for more than an year now
This video actually inspired me to try to play different genres than my usual music taste (especcially the time when you tried out polyphia)
I started guitar about 9 months ago, and I’d say I’m getting pretty good, but this made me not wanna just play for hobby, I love blues and I’ll probably stick to blues/rock so thx for saying we don’t have to do what everyone is doing just do what you like and that’s that ❤
Brilliant ❤
İ wanna be like this guy someday
Ayyy long form video let's go
I miss having this passion
I've been playing for 5 years, and I still don't know any scales. It gives me inspiration to see you learn them in less than 2 years
think of it as hours spent on guitar than counting the years.. hendrix spent all his waking hours playing guitar and became a master in 4 years.. accounting of course for his military service..
I have been playing 40yrs and never officially learnt any scales i know zero theory
learnt by ear and after a while the fret board just all links together and makes sense
and you will be playing scales without actually knowing you are playing scales.
nice!
I love playing Lenny
Whats your best advice for someone losing confidence in learning?
Just play it, don't think about it
That's kinda my issue,I've always had it as a hobby and what killed my desire to get really good I'd realizing no matter how good someone is there is always someone better and I'd hate to dedicate all my time to still be considered sub par to others
@@someone7068 the point about playing an instrument is not to be better than anyone, but the pleasure when you playing it... And how much you enjoy it...
I started electric only 6 months ago and you have inspired me to give it my best. also where's the gear collection vid? How important is music theory to you and learning players?
Finally going to give you a sub because I made an account finally thanks for all you man!
Thats crazy ! :) My first amp was a little gorilla like that 1992;)
So cool man. I started with a bass guitar but recently been trying guitar lots of fun.
love your hippie taste in music. Keep on rocking dude.
I had the same thing. It was weird, since the first three years i did not really do anything. Like the hardest songs i could play were jellybelly by the smashing pumpkins and my
own summer by deftones. After 3 years, something suddenly clicked whereas before i liked the concept of guitar but dis not like putting in the work, now i needed to play guitar and began to experience withdrawl symptoms if i didn’t play guitar for long enough. I could play for an entire day with no breaks for a weekend without even stopping to eat. And i would love every second of it. Now of course sometimes i don’t want to play as much, but there are also times like those. And man, I made like so much progress.
After three years:
Could play single note riffs and power chords
Did not know one chord or one scale
Played like only easy metal like deftones
Basically no progress, just screwing around
Knew nothing about music theory
After 3 months with my newfound obsession:
Venturing into jazz chords and weird chords, tritones, all that jazz
Still was a metalhead
Knows a lot about music theory
Can sing and play at the same time
Can play jack johnsons “Constellations”
Can play classical guitar songs like “Capricjo arabe”
Basically could just play anything pretty well, an all rounder I found all guitar fascinating and wanted to explore all of it, and so I did not focus on speciallizing. Just remember, if you want it enough, work and all, you can do it, and I am a prime example
( i do find it important to note that I was a music lover since out of the womb, my literal first word was guitar no joke. I had played like a bit of piano and drums beforehand but no instrument stuck with me. I can now play various percussion instruments including drums, bass, piano, and most of all guitar)
Dude if I could choose the song of my life, it would be Lenny. My Dad would play it on a stereo when I was a baby to help me fall asleep and it worked every time, and playing it on guitar is even better.
dude kept learning new things. Aah, that feels familiar.
Idk if this is a dumb question or not but what was your method of practice like what were you doing to progress and learn so well 😭😭
I never realized that band mate walk off vid was you lol
Been obsessed with guitar… Played for 3-6 hours every day for like 3 weeks until my wrist started hurting.
Sadly im on a break rn it sucks so bad i just want to play and improve maaan
This was fun!!! Would recommend checking out Seasons End by Weapons has great riffs and Daisy Chain's album Oh my, Satan. Thanks for the recommendation UA-cam.
I go back and forth on playing guitar. I can at least say that I have only not played for one day so far. I've at least picked something or strummed aomething or tried to learn a new chord every so often
7:50 2018 was an edgy year. i felt that
I'm only subscribing bcuz ur last name sounds Italian
And Italians are dope
Tbh polyphia is the reason i bought a guitar, i always wanted to play as a kid my cousin played guitar but now I'm an adult and when i listened to polyphia for the first time i decided to buy one for Christmas 2023, I'm still very early on but it's really fun i mainly got it to ease my brain away from my main hobby and because i aspire to one day make something that sounds cool 🤷♂

So much good progress.. but still has not found the Telecaster 😮😅
Just out of pure curiosity, how did you learn Hey Joe, especially the part where you play with the guitar on your back. Could not find the tabs to make it sound quite like your part does
I’ve obsessed so much that I got a wrist cyst and now I have to wait weeks to remove it and can’t play 😭
What is the name of the group you were in? I wanna listen to that album
The fact so many talk about his feet is exactly why he censored them 😂
Show us your parts-caster
