I’ve learned like 30 songs from Marty, he’s not an “influencer” he’s an educator trying to make it in this world. I don’t get coming down on someone who’s uploaded hundreds of FREE lessons and tutorials and has been a big positive to the YT guitar community. He walked so guys like you could run.
I learn quite a bit from Marty. Check out the channel Guitar At Work. Learned how to play comfortably Numb Rhythm there and am working on the solo's from Marty.
this video is not about free lessons.
That might have meant something if you didn't finish with that metaphor. If you like any of them mentioned in this video, cool. By the sounds of it though you've been using his free content, not the paid courses this video references? He didn't really come down on him, he just didn't think it represented value for money, it's just a different opinion.
this video is not about his FREE lessons and tutorials
It's not but I think the point of the video was you don't have to buy courses to learn guitar, and I agree.
I have not bought any course to learn guitar. I'll watch a video and get the tab listen to the song and just do it!
I think it was on this video if I was to buy a course it would be Marty, Steve Stein or, I have been checking this channel out called Guitar at Work. Learned a few things from him.
How to piss off the entire english guitar community in a video, I really like how you said everything, no rodeos, just what you learned, keep it up bro
it can get controversial when you name names but hey we all do live in the real world, or most of us, i think.. i hope
@@leechild4655 Possibly on a t-shirt: "I live in my own world. But it's all right; everyone there knows me."
This kid lowkey seems like a know it all and his dad buys all his gear. This whole video is passive aggressive 😂
The entire online guitar lesson Empire has been toppled by a polyphia fan with a broccoli cut. I'm subbing.
Lmao
I actually enjoy marty’s paid courses. Having some structure instead of sorting through random youtube vids helps me a lot. To each their own
Dude, Marty is the GOAT.
@@watersnortmoment3734yas
Fr it helped me a shit ton
Marty sometimes confuses me with him going through the lesson too slow and repeating it over and over again. But in the long run I’ve learned a lot from his videos.
He's ok for songs from the 90s' up, but he can't play the classics worth shit. Tries to modern them up and they just sound shitty.
Hey Mikey, kudos for giving your opinion on these guitar “influencers”. You knew you were opening yourself up to major criticism but hey you are entitled to your opinion. Also appreciate your identifying the guitars you were playing during the video. Most guys don’t do that and it really makes a difference for guitarholics like me so thanks!
this long form content from mikey goes crazy
Marty is a legend, learned my first songs and basic theory stuff with him it reaches a lot of people. Yea there’s influencers but Marty just liked to help aspiring guitarists or people who might just want to try it. So yeah someone who’s advanced isn’t gonna take a lot away from his lessons that’s new to them
Mikey, your video formats are genius and wildly entertaining. I think we’d be great friends fr. Just so enjoyable watching your reels and videos. Keep it up man 🤙🏻
I love your videos and you really keep me playing on guitar thanks for the content!!!🎉
love your realness bro! Keep giving it to me real and comedic-ally pleasing!
I have a teacher and get weekly lessons. It’s not expensive IMO. After the beginner stuff like learning all the beginner open chords, I moved onto power chords and learning the notes on the 6th and 5th string.
I’m learning to read simple rhythms and most importantly, how to count them out.
Dio - Holy diver = 1 and a 2 and a 3 and 4. Learning to play in time is very important to my teacher and I’m sounding good.
I pick songs I believe are in my skill level, bounce it off my teacher to see if he agrees and work on them developing new techniques with each song.
I’m 52, I started at 49. I have arthritis and stiff fingers. I can get inflammation. I couldn’t play unison bends with out pain, so he changed the music sheet at the end of a song for me to a fast paced blues scale instead of the bend part so I could play the song and have fun.
I highly recommend getting a teacher/taking lessons if you’re a beginner and want to learn the guitar.
I agree. I've never improved quicker than when I booked a block of a dozen half hour lessons. It cost me about 11 GBP per half hour and It really helps to have somebody there to say "you're doing this wrong" and having somebody to jam with for a few minutes a week really gave me incentive to practice.
Yep, a teacher is the way to go to get the feedback. Better than all of these online guys.
You fuckin had me with that guitar course offer lmao
Business is changing
I work as a guitar teacher and rely on people paying me for weekly lessons. Have been doing it a long time
With the rise of UA-cam People are used to getting knowledge and education for free
I don’t know who started the trend and it don’t know if it’s good or bad
Saying that , I make use of s lot of free content myself and I think I should be more appreciative because it’s very easy to take it for granted .
But as I said business is changing
It can be very hard watching UA-camrs reap so much rewards from so little work(in comparison to a regular teacher teaching up to 50 students a week one on one and the myriad of challenges that come with it) because of the ratio of the labour to global audience and actual /possible income
I think there are great , but There are a lot of things a video can’t teach , nor a genetic paid for course. Nothing beats real life one on one tailors coaching
It’s going to be interesting to watch how guitar education evolves both on and offline
dave simpson is the best teacher and all his videos and lessons are free via his yt channel that man has lessons on everything you would need as a strat player
He is the perfect man for this. Even if you want to play Peter Green, John Frusciante or Rory Gallagher he can explain it perfectly how the notes works on their guitar style🙂
Absolutely love Dave
Dave is one the best guys in the guitar community, I especially like his honest reviews on gear, especially the affordable gear.
this is one of the best guitar videos i’ve ever seen😭! Well fuckin done Mikey🕺🏻
This is the first long length video that I've seen from you, usually I just saw you around on insta reels or shorts, but man, your content is really entertaining, thanks for sacrificing your patience and money for us guitar players!
Also, the best song was the one based on the Bernth course
Don’t dis Nik Nocturnal man, he’s like one of the only “guitar” influencers who actually tries to make his videos cool like u bro
He wasn’t dissing nic. He just said his course sucks
@@michalwawrzenczyk he called him and Marty Schwartz greedy, and it’s not like UA-camrs with under 5 million subs are making bank off of every video so making a course isn’t greedy

Good shit Mike, I did Justin guitars online course for $10 a month as a complete beginner. I actually liked it 🤷♂️ haven't tried anything other than his beginners course though.
Justin is the GOAT in online guitar teaching. All those structured quality lessons for free. He goes into detail that other teachers rarely do. I'd say he 100% earned those 10 bucks
@@math001 agreed, i just don't have the willpower to create my own structured practice routines. Main reason I got it. You can find damn near every video lesson for his courses on his YT.
@@loganblurton6035 As you get to the more intermediate stuff, he does stress that you should start making your own custom routine, because everyone is different, and he can't provide a structured routine for every single player, but he gives a solid outline for an hour long routine. 10 minutes technique practice, 10 minutes knowledge (theory, scales etc.) 10 minutes practicing songs, 10 minutes working on rhythm, 10 minutes transcribing/ear training (which you could just do outside of the routine) and 10 minutes improv practice. Once you know what you want to play, you need to research a bit and find more specific stuff that you should practice. I've personally change it around quite a bit, but keep it around an hour long.
This was super helpful to the community! Thanks so much!!
Please don't get discouraged from the hate you are about to get from fanboys. I love your honesty and it is going to help new guitarists not to get scammed.
the problem isn't his honesty, it's his inability to actually follow what the teachers are saying... he's not even playing those extended chords correctly... SAD!
*shots fired!* solid advice tho. I learned the hard way and paid for online courses once or twice. If you do any lessons should be in person so they show what you’re doing wrong. Most online courses are only good for beginner level stuff.
Consistently putting out the best guitar content on UA-cam 🔥
Who?
this was a great video i spent hour practicing the noodle in between segments and it was quite inspiring ty
Haven’t watched the video yet but want to say thank you for doing that. That’s MUCH needed
Oh boy, the chaos this video might create. I hope you are prepared lol
I think what this does show is, we all learn slightly differently. When we're talking about online guitar courses, obviously there will be some similarities but I think the way the courses are structured, the camera angles, the supporting material provided and honestly, if you can tolerate the person (their voice etc) - is what separates them and it's not black and white on who is the best.
I think you do pay a premium for some of these because they have large accounts - are we really pretending we wouldn't do the same? I've had the best experiences from Justin Guitar (it's mostly entry level that I'm past but I have checked it out and think it's a good starting point for any new players). And Udemy courses, using search terms and looking at reviews, there's always deals on. Now they're one off courses, but for less than a tenner you've got it for life, often receive updates, the creators respond and provide material to work with.
I think if you're considering any, firstly you'd only consider channels you like the free content for already, and then see if the subjects and content make sense to you.
I feel like your comments on Bernth's program were pretty spot on. He goes from 0 to 100 real quick.
Vos sos mi influencer guitarrista favorito Segui haciendo lo que haces Saludos Desde argentina Aguante Mikey Piscopo
You should do a part 2 and add in Paul Davids course, in curious what yku have to say. Im glad you were honest in your reviews
Love the vids!!!! You should do tutorials!!! Many would watch
Good video man. Cool to see you step out of short format.
what's hilarious is that when you made the ad for the guitar program I didn't even flinch. they got us programmed lmao
man I love your long form contents
This is low key savage and I love it lmao. Much better content than shorts
Miley flipped us off twice in this amazing video. Love the long form content man :)
Turns out I love your long form content!
A really great one is Texas Blues Alley. It's a monthly subscription, and I've been a member for years. Couldn't be happier with the program.
On a side note, Marty is a good dude. Lots of good free content.
I think a lot of these types of courses serve to prove that just because you can play guitar, it doesn't automatically mean you are a guitar teacher.
I FUCKING LOVE THIS LONG FORM STUFF MIKEY
Thanks for this - was thinking of splashing out. Won’t bother now!
I remember when I was learning guitar, I couldn't stand Marty Schwartz tutorials because of how horribly wrong he got the strum patterns for many songs, even the super easy ones. I was just a beginner, and even I could hear that they were wrong. Having a good sense for strum patterns is pretty dang important, and his lessons just don't teach you that kind of intuition at all.
Truth! Plus he's corny af! I just see his shit everywhere so sometimes he's a last resort if I can't figure out a song. Even then, I just watch to get the basics then figure it out on my own.
Marty is for beginners and teaches broad strokes, you shouldn’t be nailing him in strum patterns for fucks sakes
@@Bob46374 wrong. He makes lessons for all levels
@@Bob46374people just love making a fuss out of anything! And they just love to bash people and treat them like shit behind their screens. It's so ridiculous.
Marty actually makes me feel better about my guitar playing because when I started out he was way better than me, but now I'm pretty sure I have the upper hand after just a few years. So all my hard work paid off, somehow, haha.
I'm sure Marty has helped a lot of beginner guitarists, but he really can't play a lot of songs that he's trying to teach.
Thanks so much, such an interesting take.
I've had good results with Eric Haugen and with Scott's Bass Lessons. The major difference in those two is that there is more than just videos. There is a wealth of feedback. I can't imagine paying for a guitar course that didn't include the option to send a video back to them showing the trouble that you are having with part of a lesson.
Eric lives in my town and used to teach at the music store where I took lessons, he’s a good dude
Eric's great
I love that you are finally talking about Eddie van halen and I hope you start including him in your “guitar legends” videos
Agree. Hopefully Hendrix will be next.
@@cdavidlake2 I feel like he never stops talking about henrdix lol
@@reanukeaves5629And rightfully so.
@reanukeaves5629, why would he?
It seems like every week a guitar influencer is hawking or starting up an online learning course. I get it. They realize that only a small portion of us actually have some ability to play. They are targeting the ones who see the new guitars come out, start drooling and think "I really need to learn to play one of these. Help my Samurai wan Kenobi! Teach me Master Tygon Lar sen!
There have been days and weeks I have been tempted to do it out of frustration over feeling stuck at a certain level. But like you said, just play and hunt around on UA-cam to see if a free video can get you past the hump.
..I am shocked though you didn't give Fender Play a whirl! I would have LOVED to hear your take on how that compares to the influencers.
The saying is “a Bull is a China shop” now a “bowl in a China shop” hahaha I must say as an elder person watching a younger man’s growth as a musician is really fun. Keep rocking and keep rolling bud!

You must have put a lot of work in this video. It was a lot of fun to watch. I am still trying to learn a lot and have some online courses as well. It is hard to find the place where it is not to easy and not to hard.
I think if you are a beginner and have struggled to get started a paid course with a set structure is the best way to go. I liked Justin Guitars app for beginners, after you have a good routine then you can buy a couple of books or use YT.
Everytime I see and hear your Jaguar, I feel fulfilled😃
Love the videos man but you did buy the beginner samurai course he has like 3 others that you could potentially learn something from.
The point of courses, free or paid, is to give you a structured way to advance through lessons, the fact that the same material may already exist for free scattered around youtube doesn't change this. Also some people connect better with a certain tutor, which may make it worthwhile for them to pay. And finally, when talking about advanced courses, the material might not necessarily exist on the internet or may be difficult to find - so in that case a course can save you time. I am not pro-courses but I can see how they can be useful for some ppl.
Idk why but this was such a good video
nice vocals!
Try re tuning it by yanking on the tremlo bar instead of tuners. Actually can yank it close enough to continue playing...hope this helps a little
I also tried some guitar courses. I found helpful that there are a lot of free lessons on UA-cam so that it is possible to find the instructors that work good for you or just match your style. I wasn’t so much a fan of Bernth because that is still too much for me. In the complete beginning I liked Paul and Andy and later I found Ben Eller. But for me the best in my opinion is Robert Baker that fitted best for me as I love 80s rock style and it matches my knowledge. I really can recommend him. Have a look at his free lessons on UA-cam.
That baritone sounds so damn good
Yo man you should look into the techniques my bloody valentine uses with that jaguar vibrato where they bend it constantly while playing chords lol
More long form content please
Dont do Marty like that! He's the Man!
Hey Mikey, great video, it's all about the money with these sorry ass teachers, you go on and do you, that's how you separate from the pack, keep rockin' kid... I've been doin' this since 66

@@bruce949everyone. No one spends all their waking hours being busy doing stuff. We have plenty of free time during the day, that's where you get your practice in. Do that everyday for a year and you will improve 💯
Following one course gives you a kind of structure or foundation and enables some discipline. Otherwise you just go after one shiny thing after another.
Banger video
Damn, a whole country style diss track to samurai guitarist 😂
Wow an unintentional diss. I love it. Hope more people take notice
Oh man you should have done any of the Rick Beato courses, he looks so insightful . I just feel like in his regular UA-cam videos he goes from 0 to 100 in a blink of an eye and is hard to follow along, that's why I'm doubtful about purchasing one of his programs.
His course book is very good, but very dense and academic. Your music theory has to be intermediate going in, otherwise you’ll immediately get lost. Otherwise, I’d highly recommend it, but only if you have a legitimate musical background.
Honestly, Ben Eller is probably my favorite to learn stuff from. Him and, i think his name is Andy, from shut up and play. They both have good ears. Carl Brown is ok too as i like that he goes slow, helped me out a ton early on but after a bit i noticed mistakes for some songs he would make. Depending on the style of music i go with different guys. For metal i go to Carl or Guitar force or Ben Eller. For classic rock i go to Andy frok Shut up and play or Marty. Marty is decent for blues style stuff but i wouldnt go to him for any metal songs. Different guys have their wheelhouses. While i would love a regular teacher, financial restraints have forced me to learn on my own. Ive done ok so far but my understanding of theory is still nill. I just learn different songs, pay attention to little riffs and tricks and try to incorperate it into my own playing. Its not a perfect system but i am a hundred times better now then when i started.
You probably mean Andy Wood, maybe? He plays with Uncle Ben…
You earned my like with the fake guitar course ad.
Top 3 online guitar courses: Anything from Truefire, Robert Renman's Master Guitar Academy, Texas Blues Alley. All great and very affordable. I've tried them all.
Eeeeeeeee-vette, not Y (don't even know what vowel to put in there)-vette. Love your enthusiasm and how playing makes you smile. Great playing and original music today.
Marty’s great. I’ve learned a bunch of riffs from Marty’s music. Mostly by accident. I’m doomscrolling through shorts. Then a Marty music clip pops up. He plays a song I don’t know. And then I’m like dammit. I need to learn this real quick.
Edit: I’ve never taken a lesson online or in real life. I have no idea what the courses are like. As a child of the 80/90s there’s so much free content it’s unreal and couldn’t imagine running out of ideas based on what’s freely available. Learning back then was an entirely different world.
I’m the same with Marty I’ve had lessons in person for years but Marty is just great for even learning new riffs to have in the bag to impress people at times
I like Michael Palmisano’s course. He’s certainly a real guitar teacher. I think he teaches things in the correct order.

I like the Stich Method, Jules Guitar, Justin Guitar, Chris Sherland, Sean Daniel, and Active Melody.
Mr mike you should have a guitar program for hendrix style playing
Here's some FREE advice if you want to learn guitar. Get a decent guitar, learn how to play C, D and G first. I mean, strum them till your fingers bleed and you have nightmares about it. Do this until you hate these three chords, you n ver want to play them again. Then, learn how to play three more chords, E, A and B (B7 would work to) and do it all over again until you want to either give up, or learn three more. I guarantee that if you do this, for at least three months everyday for a 20 minutes (or longer is better) you will be able to play 1000 songs and blow your girl's mind and a lot of your friends. If you're serious, you will do it, if not, you never really wanted to learn. Go play with your hot wheels!
Im a musician, i went to school for vocal performance so i know some theory and can play a little bit of piano. Your video helped me decide not to pay for any of these influencer courses. I paid $250 for a dvd bundle to learn how intervals work by Marty. It came with how to solo in different modes as well lol
I was 16 and could realistically only play that shape 1 minor pentatonic over everything. Looking back the info in that bundle was pretty much fundamentals and basic stuff but it was a great place to get me where I am today.
I respectfully have to pushback on the idea that Marty is a scammer. You either identify with a course or method that helps you or you don’t. Yes a lot of the information is free and out there but not everyone learns the same way. Most music schools will put you in crippling debt. when you think about it, this marketplace of music education content is amazing and so accessible free or paid. Even if it’s just a bag I licks lol
But yea in terms of people not getting refunds and service that’s messed up.
Edit: Tyler can’t do Tomo’s triad test still 😆
I'm old, I learned to play by tuning my guitar to vinyl records back in the day. I can't read music, so I just listen and figure stuff out by ear. If someone wants to show you how to play something why don't they use a camera angle from the players point of view. When I look down at the fretboard that is how I remember what I've learned. Not from watching someone play.
There are a few guys who do it, but yeah, it is frustrating. I think it boils down to being extra work.
Waitin for your course bro 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
You fuckin' got me with how natural that "Check out my guitar le$$ons" bit sounded. Hahahah
But when you want to know that the free lesson is spot on, every time, it's James James
It’s very hard to write a guitar curriculum that will please everyone
If you want to become a well rounded player that can play just about anything , then patiently work through a systematic grading syllabus (1 to 8) (like eating your vegetables)
Better if you have a teacher to guide and motivate you (and one that doesn’t just give you random candy bars each week to keep you happy)
While you’re climbing the grades you can also learn the things you REALLY want to learn . The grades will equip you with the skill level to do that
Better still, become a guitar teacher , it will greatly improve your playing skill
The problem is that nearly all of the guitar players making "lessons" on youtube might be able to play, but suck at teaching. Also, most people just starting out get discouraged when they realize they suck after just one day of practice. If you want to learn, it takes time, a lot of time. But if it's something you love, you'll enjoy every minute of it.
@@Lucas_Aaron very true . Channels that are more humour /entertainment focused have very little substance as far as actually learning anything.
Great players do not equate to great teachers either.
FR, i feel like if more beginner guitar players realized that their favorite guitarists didn't just wake up with a massive amount of guitar playing skills, and that they went through hours of practice almost daily for years before they were even remotely as good as they are now, then they would understand it just takes time. I think yes, it may help if you were to get into guitar at a young age (seeing the majority of guitarists i enjoy listening to started playing when they were kids), but that doesn't mean you can't do the same thing as an adult with the same amount of time. Just practice, practice, practice! And most importantly, have fun doing it :)
Shoutout to you Mikey for having balls and dissing shitty business practices even at the expense of potentially burning bridges in the wider youtube guitar community. That guitar community is real cliquey and has in-groups and lame stuff like that so don’t be surprised if you’re not invited to join the 137th shred compilation guitar collab lol
If you're ever gonna make a part two of this you should try the guitarzero2hero course.
