  • USED GRAPHICS CARDS!!! I know this is something that everyone wrestles with because their value is SO intriguing... I finally have a decent variety of budget GPUs to test... HERE WE GO!
    System Specs:
    CPU: r7 5800x3D
    Cooler: Thermalright Peerless Assassin
    MB: MSI B350 PC MATE
    RAM: 2x16gb 3600 MT/s, CL18
Boot: Samsung 2tb 980 pro (in gen 3)
Case: Phanteks P300a (side panel off)
Some downsides of used GPUs is they are older which means less driver updates into the future, usually worse power efficiency, parts are more prone to failure, and you won't really have a warranty. However, if you do some investigating (which we do here) you can improve your odds dramatically to be in a good position. Is that worth the lower price and possibly better performance though?? Let's find out!

I faced the exact dilema of the thumbnail. I live in Brazil, so a used 5700xt was 900BRL, a new 6600 was 1200BRL. Ended up buying the 6600 because I got 2 years of warranty plus its a newer card so it has more acess to new technologies like mesh shaders (not like it will run well, but at least will be better than the 5700xt at it lol). And a big thing, it runs cooler and uses way less power. Im happy with it.

I had a very specific dilemma where I wanted to replace my 1070 but still wanted the card to fit inside my tiny Dan A4-SFX case. When practically none of the Radeon 7000 cards ended up being true 2-slot sized, I finally picked up a used reference model 6800 (non-XT) which is currently one of the most powerful cards to fit my super compact case. Inno3D makes a 4070Ti with similar dimensions but it's far pricier and with less VRAM. I am very happy with my 6800 and it's a big boost from the 1070. I've had no issues buying used component thus far.

Overall it definitely seems like the RX 5700 XT is the better buy, but specifically living in a country with stupidly expensive energy costs the 5700 XT just isn't an option for me. It's damn interesting to see the 5700 XT consistently trading blows with and outperforming the 6600 (even if it's not surprising given the 128 bit bus). Also Intel in the mix, good to see! I hope they keep working on their drivers, a third option in the GPU market is something desperately needed to kick Nvidia and AMD's ass on pricing and give us genuinely compelling entry level options.
Nice vid Vex, keep it up! :)

5700XT always had more TFLOPS than 6600, so this is not surprising. Real matchup would be 6600XT vs 5700XT . As for A750, it needs a bit more of driver polish, but is a solid offer even now. Real competition for 5700xt is of course 6600xt and 6650xt.

There's always the option of buying broken/parts GPUs and trying to fix them. You buy 2-3 and chances are at least one of them can be fixed relatively easily! Sometimes just reflowing it is all you need, stick it in your kitchen oven at some-odd degrees for an hour, etc... Sometimes that's all a GPU's PCB needs.

Somewhat shocking that the 5700XT is so much faster than the 6600 even in Overwatch, despite expected relative performance to be similar. Is this due to the faster memory?
I'd of thought in something like Overwatch especially at medium the textures and things are very light and so the memory performance wouldn't have impacted the overall FPS to the degree shown in the video. It makes me then wonder, would there be even more benefits from GPU's with even faster memory still?

The big drawback is you need to feed direct fresh air to this gpu with case fans and an aggressive undervolt 1080mv 2010mhz for 5700xt, for it to run cool and draw around 140-180W while gaming

I recently got an a750, and i know its performance fluctuates a lot depending on the game, but in the games I play a 5700xt demolishes it. It gets about 50% more fps at way higher settings.
Now I did get a bunch of free software with it that I an selling. So it kinda performs like a 1650 did in new games when that came out, and since it was only 202 euros, and I can probably get some money from selling the software it would also be a 1650 price I bought it for.
So price to performance is pretty decent, but the A750 and A770 are definitely entry level cards for a bunch of games with "even" a 5700xt being miles ahead of them. Not that a 5700xt is bad, but it is about 130-150 euros used. The A750 is looking like 170-180 right now, with the sold codes.

Looking at the comments, this is a really common decision people make. It heavily depends on the market conditions and the region. I had the same choice for my secondary PC and a used 5700XT was 160 EUR while a new RX 6600 with 3 years of warranty was 185 EUR. I liked having the peace of mind of a new GPU with warranty so I went with the 6600. Also the power draw certainly is a bonus, it's one of the most efficient cards out there.

Finally, someone is saying it! Used are a good idea... if they're current enough. Something like the 580, or 1000 series nvidia are going to have less support as time goes on, and cost you more electricity for your performance in the long run. Might as well splurge on a newer card now, and be able to enjoy it longer for cheaper. Also it's worth mentioning, you can actually get a used 6600 for around the same price as that used 5700xt.

5:29 ok i seen enough to say this. The big mistake most make in choosing a card is how much FPS and the cost to purchase. Listen, the cost of a graphic card is how much it cost you to run it. Now, a kid surely won't care because parents paying the light bill most likely, but you see that $130 for the 5700XT, will end up costing you more in light bill because of how much power it uses. I was very interested in that card too, but the 6600 and Arc series catching my interest because they run more efficient. The FPS differences honstly doesn't matter. Once it's giving 30 or 45-60 YOU'RE GOOD!

the 6600 will loose some when moved onto an older pcie 3.0 platform like intel 8th / 9th /10th or even a Ryzen 5500. the 6600 does not run on a full x16 lanes, and doesn't need to on a pcie 4.0 system. So you might consider the 5700 xt if you are building from used or older parts.

ive never had any issue i couldnt deal with from buying used GPUs and have always gotten what was described but it is like you say , read the comments on the sale , and act accordingly , used mother boards is different story, ive had issues with every single one , but as far as GPUs go always brake them down clean and, repaste anyway , and have one 1070 that worked fine after renewing but did end needing a new set of fans, but was happy to do it as i had the card for year before the fans started acting up, and could likely just lubed the fans again but used it a build for sale and replaced them for 6$ . I didnt mind it one bit as i got 2 1070 in an old bulldozer SLI build that gave 100$ for , now mother boards are barely below retail and dont have NVME stand offs, port shields, or just plain junk i just cant enjoy

People sometimes forget that Raw performance isn't always or rarely what's the only important factor. Powerdraw / efficiency is also important to some people because of crappy electricity costs.
For me that's especially important, i live in Sweden and electricity here costs quite a penny, especially here in the south. That's why i and my gf won't be buying used older cards. Rather have a 4060 than a 3070 or a 3080 (just as an example!).
The second thing is, is that I've had mixed experiences buying used hardware. A 3080 that was used and sold once already before i bought it worked fine around 4-6 months before i had to return it because of faulty memory or / and core.
I made sure i got the original reciept so i could return it if something happened, which it did. Haven't bought a used gpu since. Many were being used for mining which Can, but not always, severly degrade the gpu.
For someone with a bit more money to spare that's not as big of an issue but for me it's very important that the things i buy have some kind of insurance that they'll work for atleast a certain amount of time and if something breaks then I get a refund/replacement.

I built myself a rig for testing Linux, didn't wanna deal with Nvidia Linux BS on my main rig. Been loving my little champ, RX 6600 (nonXT), i3 12100, and 16gb ram. Going to upgrade the ram but it's been amazing running a system with full open source drivers and being able to use skills and tips I learned from my steam deck. 6600 pulse was the biggest and best GPU I could fit in the tiny build setup that I made, otherwise 4060ti 16gb MSI 2 fan model can fit but for Linux esp, meh. For anyone who has this card, give Linux a shot. Feels better than in windows at least to me.

I've had a used 6600xt that was used for mining, for about a year, no issues, it runs cool and I can achieve 2707mhz core clock @ 1050mv. Results in temps in the 50s instead of 70s. I got a 6700xt recently though, it's much better for the price. $300 vs the $250 7600. The 6600 is a sapphire pulse and 6700 is a sapphire nitro+. Still though the 6600xt takes a dump on the 3060(Ti as well) and the 4060 in actual use in both 1080 and especially 1440p.
A sidenote as well, I still have a working RX570 that was heavily used for mining when it got to me, but i got it for $100 so I couldn't complain much, cleaned it up well and it was my main GPU for a few years. The new ones came in basically perfect condition, no dust. The 570 literally had rust on it 😂😂😂

My previous GPU is 5700xt, it performed well but it is unbelievably loud and overheating, I placed my PC under the table because of that. Besides that, if you let it run at 100% load for a while, the adrenaline driver might crash, sometimes it is a minor crash, but sometimes, it crashes so hard that your PC freezes and you have to do a cold restart. In extreme cases your driver will be 'killed' and you have to reinstall the driver no matter how many times you restart your PC xD. By the way, my model is XFX THICC III, I put XFX on my blacklist because of this GPU, it bends, what crappy quality xD

Unfortunately I live in an area where people think a 5700XT is worth 300+CAD (and they get belligerent if you try to haggle them down), while I can buy a powercolor 6600 off amazon for 260CAD...If I drive 3 hours to the next city (6hr round trip, and 3/4 tank of gas) used 5700xt's are 175-180. The problem is gas prices are too high to make it worth the trip. 160 for the card +80 for gas is 240... so saving 20, maybe 30 bucks and wasting the jist of a day off isn't worth it.
