  • This is video is a review of the EGO battery operated lawn mower. I really want a battery powered lawn mower for my home and can't wait to try this EGO. I use many of their other products so lets see how this mower does with cut quality and performance.

I have the Ego. There are two big learning points with it. You're accelerating too fast - slow down a bit. It won't raise like that, and you'll gain some consistency on the cut. Second, the mulching blade doesn't cut very evenly. Many of us have learned that over time. Did you notice how very little suction the mulching blade has? It won't pick up even the smallest of twigs. It doesn't create enough lift to pull the grass up and cut it, particularly at the left and right edges of the deck. So you get uneven heights. I fought it for one whole season (usually by mowing my front lawn twice in two different directions) and was about to sell the mower but decided at the last minute to try the high lift blade, EGO says for bagging. But it transforms the cut quality, too. Since researching it, many leave the high lift on all the time and that's what I'm now doing. So slow down a little and use the high lift blade if you try again.

So ... can EGO mowers only use EGO blades? If cut quality is highly influenced by the blade, I'd expect many poorly-performing mowers to really just be poorly-performing blades instead.

Hi, thanks for the great reviews here and of the subsequent mower-the SR Toro. You are detailed, honest, exploratory and genuine in your perceptions and likes/dislikes. I've been between the Ego and the SR Toro and the other day I demo'd an Ego at a store. I noticed exactly what you were talking about-the jerkiness and lifting from the SP start-even at slow speed setting- and also from a rolling start. I'm not crazy about that, and could see it having an effect on lawn cutting...Cheers and thanks again!

Get the better high lift blade (keep it sharp), run the largest battery you have (7.5, 8, 10, 12), don't set the blade too low, and turn off self-propelled for a better cut & free exercise. I don't really use the bag or the side discharge so it will mulch, and if cutting wet grass you may have to clear out clumps that stick under the deck. Never have to fight with bad gas, always stops and starts, quiet (can mow early or late when it is cooler outside), and works great!

You can tell you are not in the south. If I cut my grass and left it that long, I'd be cutting it again tomorrow. lol That length is where mine is when it's a few days past needing to be cut.
I bought the 2125 model (21" deck, self propelled, single blade) yesterday on a whim after my Troy-Bilt with Honda engine wouldn't start and keep running. I didn't want to start having to work on it, clean carburetor, etc. so I went to Lowes and bit the bullet. I love it so far. It's my first self-propelled mower. Easy to use, quiet, and no worries about having gas on hand, dealing with old gas, oil changes, etc. Just pop the battery in and go. I am sold. As soon as I start having problems with my Stihl trimmer or leaf blower, They are getting replaced with an Ego.
I use a bag here, so I ordered the high-lift blade and I will try it out when it comes in. It supposedly makes the single blade models cut more cleanly and suck up the grass clippings much better than the stock mulching blade.
Mine doesn't lift up like that, but I am also not starting it out wide open. Does yours lift like that at lower speeds, too?

Technology is moving fast! The first thing is solar and a power station to circumvent/offset the charging expense. I have a certificate in horticulture. And five (5) years of formal education in mechanics. The real advantage is moving into remote control. Some manufactures already have GPS equipped on their mowers; thus, eliminating overhead. I believe technology is moving so fast that the lithium ion battery will be improved this year causing me to pause. Heavy duty implements will be more electric and include remote control. Imagine how that will reduce overhead! Competition will be fierce! Thanks for the video! I Subccribed.

I just picked up mine last night and noticed the lifting, I’ll have to adjust how I use it but did notice if I just have it on the first few clicks of the self propel it doesn’t do that.
I would think they should be able to firmware adjust that so it doesn’t launch and it’s a soft start to improve the initiation of the self propel.
First cut went excellent (coming from a 20 year old toro) and I’m really happy with it. I’m going to keep it but I hope this is a company that’s going to keep pushing forward with innovations and improvements.
Seeing that this LM2156SP came out years ago I’m shocked they didn’t make some adjustments to improve the device. Like why are we not allow to spray under the carriage to clean off the underside? Why do the wheels when pulling in reverse have resistance after releasing self propel mode for a few seconds? Why does my mower do wheels still when all they need to do is modify the imitation procedure? LOL
Other than those critical things I ask about I’m really happy with it after the first day.

      @davidsuzukiispolpot Рік тому

Ryobi 40v has a defect in which if the battery doesn't sit perfectly in the charger, it will discharge the cells to zero in less than a week. I just took mine apart. Once the cells go too low, they are garbage. If you catch it in time, you can do some magic to save it (the battery won't charge in the charger without some tricks), but my son mowed the lawn and didn't check the battery seating, so now I would need to spend more than the mower is worth to replace the battery. This is not worn cells, it is a design error.

I recently bought two Ryobi mowers (one of the biggest versions and one that smaller) simply because I wanted the batteries for my Ryobi auger and was getting a good deal. I’ve had the older version Ego mower around 5 years and neither Ryobi compares at all. One thing I hate about the Ryobi is you can’t use the self propel feature without engaging the blade. I’m 6’3 and also the handle height isn’t good for me. Next time you need a mower I strongly recommend the Ego and if you don’t like it just take it back.

Recently purchased the LM2135sp select cut to replace my HRR216 Honda. I never liked the way the Honda handled because it has the backward-resistance issue that is common, and the older I get the harder it gets to mow with. The EGO is much easier to handle, and I use it without the self-propel engaged for most of the yard. I have only used it with the mulching blade on, but the first time I cut with it, I took off a good bit of grass, so a lot of the clippings were on the lawn afterward. I put the bag on (with the mulching blade) and went over the yard again (this was also a common technique with the Honda when the grass got a bit long), and the EGO had no problem picking up the loose clippings. However, when you don't let the grass get ahead of you, the mulching performance seems very good, and because the EGO is so easy to use, I suspect I'll have a much easier time keeping up with the grass growth. I did not notice any issue with the deck lifting, but if I did, I'd probably just pull the mower backward quickly to catch what grass was jumped. Thanks for your review.

🤔 The EGO mowers are quite light (compared to ICE Mowers) and are very easy to push. I think that the self propelled feature is both unnecessary and overly complex.
The LM2130 (bare tool); LM2133 (Kit w/ charger & 5AH ARC Lithium battery); or LM2135 (Kit w/ charger & 7.5AH ARC Lithium battery) all have the 7 ft-lbs torque motor (the most powerful non-SP mower (the SP suffix after the model number signifies “Self-Propelled”).
I believe in the KISS principle: The LM2100 series has less weight, less interlocks & switches, less expense, and less effort and noise when manually pushing.
EGO currently makes ten 21” mower models (disregarding the ZT riders, of course) with power ranging between 5.3 ft-lbs to 8.3 ft-lbs (the 20” models have less power). The 8.3 ft-lbs models are the only ones more powerful than the LM2100’s 7 ft-lbs motor due to them having the extra 1.3 ft-lbs power to supply the drive train.
No disrespect is intended, but the jumping/gouging issue I feel was due to unfamiliarity and operator error. The LM2100 series of course doesn’t have this issue and is lighter. I would only consider an “SP” model if the mowing was intended for hilly terrain. Thanks for your careful analysis. 😎

I absolutely agree with the K.I.S.S. principle! I wore myself out reading reviews on about every kind of battery powered mower and quickly got frustrated when reading the 1 Star reviews. Many times... the big complaint on many different brands centered on something related to the self propelled "SP" models. More mechanical features = more potential problems.
I'm old, and I've owned and used a lot of mowers. The countless issues people have had with gas mowers in the past were only complicated and multiplied when people starting buying the self propelled "luxury" models.
A good pushing PUSH mower isn't that hard to use... if you use the simple technique of mowing side to side when going up a hill, instead of trying to go straight up! With some really difficult yards, a "SP" model may be worthwhile. But, people keep getting lazier with each new generation and they want the mower to pull itself... even when they really don't need it. 🙄 I finally settled on a new EGO without the self propelled feature and I love it just as it is!

I've spent too much time in the industry to buy from newer brands. We have a full line of electric Stihl tools (home), and all the batteries are all interchangeable between tools (in the product line). I want a brand that's been making the gas products I used for decades, going electric is the easy part- achieving the quality of a brand with long experience is the hard part.

Lowe's outbid HD for the business. I've owned an EGO for 5 years and although I've been generally pleased with it my main complaint is directly related to why I liked it so much to begin with. The plastic body makes it extremely light, but that lack of weight also allows it to bounce across the lawn if it's not perfectly flat. My previous mower with a steel deck did not. Picky? Perhaps, but it bugs me. Since I have a lot of WORX tools I'm going with their 80 volt mower when this one gives out. I can use the same batteries and it has a lot features that make it even more simple to use than the EGO.

I have an acre between front and back yards, and I've purchased a 7.5ah battery in addition to the one that came with the mower. So I have two batteries and two rapid chargers (I have a second rapid charger from an Ego snow blower) and a few 5ah and 2.5ah batteries and slow chargers from my Ego blower and other equipment (including trimmer, blower, and chain saw). My typical summer weekly cut takes the equivalent of 4 full 7.5ah charges to complete; typically I run through both 7.5s, then 1-2 5ah before one of the 7.5s is recharged and ready to finish the back. One charge is usually enough for my front lawn, but my back yard is about three times the size of my front. Mulching leaves in the fall sometimes requires 2-3x as much.

When I was cleaning it up, i felt the edge and realized grind was horrible. A proper sharpening will greatly improve cut quality.

It's a single blade.....but I've also adapted it to double blade.
      Couple of things.....
      I need no self propelled.
I've got just the mulching double blade(I mulch all summer)
Does very good mulching as long as you cut 2 to 3 times a week.
The quality of cut is pretty good with either single or double.
Suction power.....is crappy compared to gassers....and the only thing I dislike.
      Blade speed....
      My mower has 5.3ft/lbs
Top of the Ego mowers have 8.3ft/lbs
      Best push mower has 7ft/lbs
Torque.....does it translate to better suction?
I will find out one day I guess cause I'm invested heavily into EGO stuff.

      Grass trimmer.....awesome
      Chainsaw......awesome

Compare that to 13A corded electric (2hp) or gas (3-5hp). Thats why I dont buy the battery electric. Theyre weak or short life battery. Youre gonna go with high grass height or cut more often or shorter runtime compared to gas or AC electric.

You’re just nitpicking. Your speed adjustment was too fast and your mower launched when you started it. Lower the speed and you would of been fine. The EGO brand is one of the best on the market and has the best battery operation out of all the electric mowers out there. I’ve had my Select Cut for 3 and love it! It’s so easy to use and just as powerful as my old Briggs and Srattan. I’ll never go back to a gas mower for my home use. Even if I don’t get 20 years out of it like my old gas mower, I’d still buy another one as the technology will get better every year. Mowing my lawn isn’t such a chore anymore using this mower.

As a consumer, I've never cared for other shoppers who return packaged items from a general purpose store because they don't like something as opposed to the item having a defect. Because when I go to a place like Lowes I only want to buy unopened packaged items, as you can't rely on the staff being skilled enough to verify that a returned items is in good shape. It seems too much like buying a new outfit for a special event and then returning it the next day. Now, if this mower was purchased from a mower equipment business where letting customers try a purchase out for a while (and accepting a higher purchase price) was part of the business model, then I'd be fine with it.

I think you'd be able to tell if they tried to sell you a mower that had been opened. Also, I would hope it would be marked as an open-box unit and discounted. Other retailers like Best Buy do this. Sadly, there's no way to test drive any of these mowers without buying them and taking them home. They're up above your head, you can't even roll em around in the store or anything.

    • @JasonEDragon

@@infotime That is why I watch or read reviews of products that I want to by from Home Depot, Lowes, Ace, etc. - for anything that I can't return in 100% new, unopened condition. On more that 1 occasion I've gone to these stores and found only 1 item on the ground level pallet - and it has been opened. Or, I have to shift around heavy boxes to get to one that hasn't been opened. It is annoying. If you want to test drive something then pay a little more and go to a small dealer that has some set up for you to try out. You will have to pay more, but that is only fair. To do a take home and return test drive is just shifting costs onto other customers.

The funniest thing.... I bought this exact mower, to replace my 30 year old John Deere mower, because mine seized up. It wasn't the engine, but rather, the clutch/brake assembly for the blade. Rather than repair it, I bought this EGO. I like to catch, and I have a huge yard, (1/3-1/2 acre) so I put the extended run blade on it. I found, that I only used ~40% of the 7.5 amp hour battery, and I wasn't satisfied with the airflow into the bag. The next mowing, I put the high lift blade on, dropped the cut height another notch, and got a beautiful cut. To get the much better cut quality, I only ended using up ~60% of the battery.
If you watch other reviews on UA-cam, you'll find, that many of them use the high lift blade in mulch mode, which is the worst possible combination. The extended run blade does both mulch and bag so-so. The high lift blade is excellent for bagging, but horrible for mulching. the mulching blade doesn't seem to bag even as well as the run time extender blade.
I wasn't aware of the lift when using the "touch-drive". I'll have to try that. Look closely, I'm willing to bet, that it lifts only the back half of the mower, and not the front half. That slight forward rake may cause the cut height in the middle of the swath to not change, while the edges, near the wheels goes up a little, causing somewhat of a "half-pipe". I never noticed that, but, I'm going to have to try that with my new mower, and if I have that problem, I just won't use drive. This light weight mower is actually fairly easy to push, and, it saves battery power if you don't use it. (I love the headlights on this mower. I sometimes get a late start on mowing, and have had to finish "under the lights". That gimmicky feature actually comes in quite handy!
