Hey there! It's great to be back with another video for you all. Today, I want to talk about why I'm ditching my old ego mower for a Makita, and give you my honest review of the product.
As you all know, I've been using an ego mower for a while now, but I recently decided to make the switch to a Makita, and I have to say, I'm pretty impressed. In this video, I'll be sharing my experience with the Makita, and why I think it's the superior choice for anyone looking for a high-quality mower.
First of all, let's talk about why I decided to make the switch. While my ego mower has served me well, I found that it just wasn't living up to my expectations in terms of performance and durability. The Makita, on the other hand, has blown me away with its power, efficiency, and overall design.
In this video, I'll be going over all the features and benefits of the Makita, including its advanced battery technology, powerful motor, and innovative cutting deck. I'll also be comparing it to the ego mower, so you can see for yourself how it stacks up.
So, if you're in the market for a new mower and want to know why I'm ditching my ego mower for a Makita, then you definitely won't want to miss this video. I'll be sharing all of my honest thoughts and opinions, and giving you a detailed look at why I think the Makita is the best choice for anyone looking for a top-of-the-line mower.
Thanks for watching, and don't forget to hit that like button and subscribe to my channel for more videos like this one. And, if you have any questions or comments, feel free to leave them down below. I always love hearing from you guys!

Also ditched my ego mower for a makita. I also agree EGO makes a great mower. I got rid of it because the batteries kept dying (I went through six) and they cost $380 each. That is ridiculous and unacceptably expensive. Now, EGO was nice enough to replace my battery twice, but it's just not good enough. I owned that mower for six years (first gen 20"). Makita is what all of my tools use, and it just makes sense to replace batteries that cost $80 each, rather than $380/each.

That and Makita batteries are really easy to find I can walk into any Home Depot today and purchase a 2 pack of 5amp batteries for around $250 and I could buy adapters and use other 18v batteries. I just did this with my Ridgid batteries and they worked really well. Can't do that with Ego you have to buy their special batteries.

Wow, another one that is leaving EGO. Hmmmm. Batteries have been a problem with my Ryobi tools as well. Mainly the 18v ones. I know how to fix them, so it isn’t a hard failure but inconvenient for sure. I am hoping to find a tool that has reliability. I don’t really care if it outperforms gas, I don’t mind swapping out batteries. If I have a lawn that needs to be done and it will take 3 batteries of whatever to do the job, I should have 3 batteries on the shelf charged up so I can not wait on power charging. Thanks for your comment. Helps refine my search. All the best to both of you!

The biggest part of the battery mower experience is the batteries as they will need to be replaced at some point. I would probably not purchase an Ego brand due to the batteries at this point. Even if their battery doesn't go bad or loose charge if you ever drop it and it breaks you might not be able to find another one. This isn't a new issue for Ego I have never found 7.5 or 10amp batteries in the stores which means you will always have to wait to get one.
I would look at those who use the common 18v or 20v batteries like Makita, Dewalt, Milwaukee. I really liked the Toro electric but I couldn't fine replacement batteries for that one either. With the batteries being the weakest link and the most likely to be damaged from heat or water I want to be able to get them easily.

Makita batterys are usually pretty good quality and last a good while. You can replace the cells in them too after a few years if you are handy with a soldering iron, the management system should last much longer than the cells normally.

I just got a 21" makita. Returning it asap for gas. Its run-time in thick grass is around 1/4 what makita claims and the cost of extra batteries is outrageous. It's also short on power, which is particularly severe as the batteries discharge: the self-propel speed drops a lot. Considering a powerful honda mower can be bought for less I could not possibly recommend one of these unless a person has a very small yard. The 3-second ramp up you mention for self-propel is impossible to ignore and, in some ways, even worse than the run-time. It's deeply frustrating. I don't believe there is an electric mower on the market that can handle my 1/3 acre for less than $1k. Not worth it.

Nice review , I like the Makita mower even the Milwaukee. But I switched from my craftsman mower 5 years ago , bought the ego push mower 21 inch , still have and use the 5 amp battery that came with the mower , still holding a charge , been impressed with Ego bought into the platform , have the powerhead string trimmer , pole saw , hand held hedger , blower , nexus power station , and it's the second winter with the 2 stage snow blower 👍🤞 very impressive so far , and not one battery issue yet 🙏🤞 , unfortunately I have the Bosch batteries and tools , to bad they don't make the 18 volt mower and yard equipment. I might have bought into them. I know in Europe they have the Bosch mower and yard equipment. Apparently it's good stuff. Great video , thanks for sharing 👍👊🍻

I think Ego tools are top notch and I really like the system. I have the string trimmer and hedge trimmer still but I noticed the 2.5ah battery is having the same issue where I can't finish my whole yard with the string trimmer anymore. I store the batteries in the house so it isn't a weather thing. I'm slowly transitioning to Ridgid 18v system as I was already invested in them.

New subscriber here. I have Ryobi here at my Texas country home. It has been nice to not have to fight with string trimmer and push mower issues with gas especially with ethanol. But Ryobi batteries have problems (especially the 18v One+ kind). That is why I am looking at other battery mower/tool lines. The Ryobi tools have been adequate. I don’t mow the majority of my lawn with the Ryobi, mostly trim and steep slopes. I have a Zero Turn gas mower that has a 54” deck that does a fine job of mowing the big fields. I have repaired most of my 18v Ryobi batteries over the last few years. It seems the BMS (battery management board) draws the energy down too far and the BMS FETS cut off current. I have had to bypass the cut off to power them back up. Occasionally there is a bad cell, but mostly they drop below spec and I have to fix them. My 40v Ryobi batteries are performing okay and I will most likely keep the mower with the 40v, but new tools are what I am wondering about. Do I go with EGO or Makita chain saw that I currently need? I do understand I am buying into a ecosystem of batteries. The fact you have trouble finding EGO batteries is interesting. Thanks for the video and for listening to this old retired guy ramble on. Have a great fall season wherever you call home.

How was self propelled EGO vs Makita? Would you consider non-self propelled?

    • @Nemesis099
      @Nemesis099  2 роки тому +3

I would for the Ego but not for the Makita. The Makita is so much heavier you really need it. I hardly used the self propelled on the Ego.
As far as how the Ego goes full throttle the second you touch the handle for it where as the Makita has a ramp up to the speed you set. I wish the Ego ramped up a bit over say 1-2 seconds where as the Makita takes longer than it should to ramp up. I'm sure I'll get used to the Makita but with the Ego I popped wheelies all the time because of how quickly it would move.
I also like self propelled as if you pull a muscle or something you can typically still mow the yard. as you don't need to push a mower.

I’m thinking hard about going electric and already have many Makita tools and batteries… XML08 vs XML03 vs XML07?

    • @Nemesis099
      @Nemesis099  Рік тому +1

      Okay quick rundown.
XML03 is an 19" deck instead of 22" for the XML07 and XML08 which means it is a smaller mower that will need more passes. The XML03 I also think only holds two batteries at a time which means more switching them out instead of just flipping a switch. Not major but with a 15-30 minute runtime could be a big deal. The XML07 and XML08 hold 4 batteries but only use two at a time with a manual switch to change which bank you are using.
XML08 is a self propelled push mower where as the XML07 is the same mower without the self propelled part. These mowers appear to be exactly the same in every other way.
Why I decided on the XML08 I wanted the larger deck and with one of the hills I have it is nice to have self propelled. Also this mower is heavy so self propelled is really nice to have.

First, as I watched you mow the front it seemed the mower missed a lot? I wasnt impressed with the back yard either. My gas Toro with 6.5 hp would have cut that tall grass and make a nice clean cut doing it. Apparently these electrics dont do that very well.
I also saw that Amazon sells knock off batteries to replace these, 2 for $59. The blades are expensive though.
Home depot on 10/11/22 has this mower on sale for a whopping $499 dollars not sure it that includes the battery charger, have to call them. You get the 4 batteries with it.

I'm a good 5-6 years with my Ego and found about 2 years back it started doing the same thing, not making it through the whole yard. We were in a particularly rough weather spell where we got some absurd amount of rain, talking like 5-6 feet above average for the season in the area. We couldn't keep up the grass was growing so aggressively and we couldn't cut in downpours. I noticed the Ego would spin up to its highest speed and stay there the entire time, probably just because of how high the grass got. Tried switching to bagging and the mower starting making the full yard again and ran at normal speed most of the cut. I think it was just the extra power needed to cut tall grass and trying to mulch was just too much for the battery to keep up with.
It's possible if you used that same mower in bag mode it would cut the full yard again, but I get you might not want to deal with bagging. I wound up sticking with bagging because I noticed the yard responded very well to it and looked better overall. So I haven't had the issue again and it's been almost 2 years since that.
Just in case anyone else comes across this video and doesn't have the funds to switch brands or upgrade, try switching from mulching to bagging and see if that helps. Also make sure your blades are sharp, every little bit helps when trying to maximize the power from battery. I'm going to upgrade to one of the newer models this season, will be interesting to see how more torque and more battery capacity help in my configuration.

    • @Nemesis099
      @Nemesis099  Рік тому

These are all great ideas and I hope for others it is a simple change like this as I do feel the Ego mower was great.
For me I did sharpen the blade then even replaced it. Also this wasn't just one time or a couple weeks mowing it was an entire month. I tried bagging and even raised the deck to max level the battery just didn't have the watts to get through my yard like it used to.
I'm now starting to see the same thing for my string trimmer and the 2.5ah battery. I used to to all the edging and trimming on a single charge and now that isn't the case. If I knew how I would try and measure how much the battery is actually holding as I think they have decreased by 25-45% in capacity over just 4 years.
One thing they did do is fix the battery supply issue which is the main reason I purchased a Makita. If I can't get replacement batteries unless I buy a new mower every 4 years that is a non starter for me but you can now order the 7.5, 10, and 12 ah batteries on Lowes.com

Looks like you got a good mower with the Makita. They make great tools so it's no surprise that their mowers are equally as good, plus I like the color.
I just bought an EGO Zero Turn Mower and when I register the mower and batteries, will get a 3-year warranty out of the deal. Thankfully, I only use about 35% of the battery when mowing my lawn and maybe another 20% mowing the lot next door so as the batteries age, it's not a big deal and if they get worse, I have no issues breaking it up into two jobs and seems that with a 30 minute charge, would be able to do that... if the batteries degrade!
The cool thing is that it's 2023 and there are so many brands out there for electric lawn mowers from many different price points.

I'm so glad you showed when the mower cut off. I've read a few similar stories about the 36V string trimmer although some say it can cut through any type of weeds. While it did cut out this grass was very thick grass and I know the Ego would have cut out as well. I really was trying to stress test it. Only other time I've had it cut out is when the mower bottoms out on the ground as I have a very uneven section and if the height is too low it will hit the dirt.
Biggest advantage is that the deck underneath just seems to stay clean where I had to turn over the Ego frequently as grass would be all caught up in the deck. I'm not sure if this is a metal vs plastic thing but it is something I've noticed.

The entire reason I didn't go with Ego was the lack of a side discharge. I have no idea what mowing is like elsewhere, but spring in the northeast has me mowing every 4-5 days and mulching isn't even close to an option due to the thickness of the grass. I bought the XLM08 at the beginning of 2021 and am almost 3.5 years in. It's 40-45 minutes continuous per week and the 4-5AH batteries that came along get me through that (USUALLY). Once summer hits they easily do, two batteries will get me close if it's really dry. It is used hard on my bumpy yard and has been a beast. Works as good as the day I got it. Mower's are always advertised by volts, but one thing people don't take into account that Output(Watts) is determined by Volts X Amps. The Makita can pull the amps to make up for the lack of volts and does, hence the reason I can blow through 20AH worth of battery on heavy, wet days, but it will do it. My only complaint was the side discharge chute was too narrow and angled down too hard. I removed the mulching plug entirely from the side. Now I can mow literally anything and it even helped battery life out a little I think not having to constantly mulch grass even with the discharge shoot in place. My dad just bought a Ryobi 40v 21" that has probably the best side discharge I've seen on a new mower, same deal, literally skipped the EGO because of the lack of side discharge.

I had gone through 3 mowers in about 12 years and decided that while the Makita was a bit cumbersome and maybe not the best value, it seemed like the one that could be doing the job 10 years later, and like you said, battery options are always going to exist for this platform. 3.5 years in, 10 years seems very doable. As an EGO owner, I also do no like the discharge that's in the back. I liked the concept, but 1.) It didn't hold properly. 2.) Like you said, it didn't work right. The bag catcher also seems less than optimal when compared to the gas mower I used to have "Craftsman 6.25HP".
I LOVE EGO as a whole, but there are some small nuances that I don't like, that you mentioned in this video. I cannot agree with you on the "can't find a battery" but I can agree that the COST of the battery makes it to the point where it makes more sense just to "buy a new device." I also agree with you point about the "Generic Battery". Which also means that it's not as environmentally friendly (like you mentioned.)
I did that, and I CANNOT recommend anyone going the generic route. My generic lasted a couple uses and died totally! I do hope that 36 & 18v Makita works great for you.
I had a Black and Decker 20v and she didn't even last 15 min on the weed whacker. I can't recommend those all together. That SIDE discharge on the Makita is very appealing though.
Like you, I never mow a night, so the light is a "nice to have" but it's not a MUST have. Watching your video, it seemed like there were some areas where it was good and thick weed and the Makita seemed to handle it like a champ. Around 15:48 (stopped twice in this area), that's probably due to the fact the side discharge wasn't connected. The Makita wheels seem nicer.
I noticed you stated it took you two batteries. That's expected given the smaller size. I'm curious how many minutes you got per battery roughly? I know my EGO makes it right at about an hour +/-.
I like the fact you can charge two Makita batteries at the time though and I do think the cost of the batteries is a GREAT factor to consider (aside from longevity of them being around).

The Makita mower uses two batteries at once for a 36V mower (18v + 18v). It is designed to run off of two batteries at once minimum. The 4 batteries you see (2 pairs of 18v) act an extra battery bank that you can switch to if you run out of power.

Not only do Makita batteries (they have 6.0AH but 5.0AH are far more used) charge in just 45 minutes - 2 at a time - but they have stood the test of time for almost 2 decades under the harshest conditions imaginable, being real construction jobs all over the planet. Also, their fast chargers have been around for years and very proven to charge optimally by monitoring the current, heat, and cooling of the battery during the process, which is why Makita batteries last a long time, under the harshest circumstances. Also, you can use them on over 250 other tools, which is nice. Oh yeah, and they are like the Honda or Toyota of the tool business... Very reliable

    • @Nemesis099
      @Nemesis099  2 роки тому +2

As other said Makita batteries are considered some of the best on the market. The charger has cooling just like the Ego mower and the charger monitors the heat before it starts charging. It only uses two at a time so with a 3rd set of batteries you can essentially charge indefinitely as they run for about 30-35 minutes on two batteries (60-70 minutes on all 4) so you should be able to charge up the 3rd set while the others are mowing. Also as it uses the 18volts and a lot of tools use them too you can buy other brands and use adapters. I have a lot of ridgid batteries and I bought some adapters and they worked really well. Also Ridgid batteries have a lifetime service agreement so I can change them in if they go bad.
Saying that I would not give up an Ego mower if it is working for you this was only if you have issues completing your yard which is what happened with mine. Mowing for 25-35 minutes then having to charge was not acceptable to me and after only 4 years I felt the battery should be working better that that. Then not being able to buy a replacement battery was the "straw that broke the camel's back" and make me look at other brands.

Makita batteries are some of the best on the market from everything I've read so I'm wondering if someone changed out the batteries and returned the mower.
Mine easily run for 25-30 minutes on very tall thick grass. Batteries do take longer to charge when hot which is why you really need 6 batteries if you have a larger yard. With that many you should be able to continually mow without issue.

Yes, many times the batteries are only available online as those are expensive items. And the way they do it is that it's actually cheaper to buy another tool with a battery. It literally comes out cheaper to get a tool with a battery than the battery alone. But no, the batteries have not been out of stock and are not leaving the market. That speculation is nonsense.
Right now you can get a very strong blower (765 cfm) for $299 and it comes with 2 batteries ( 5 ah + 2.5 ah). And yes, you can find this deal in stores. Just have to look around and check prices.
That Makita mower looks good, probably even better than the basic Ego idk. But I don't like the fact that it's really hard to get the blades. I'm currently using the Milwaukee and kind has similar issue. Not a lot of options for blades, Ego is much better in that department. And I do miss the dual-blade system from Ego. The new aluminum deck 22 inch Ego should be amazing, but cost a little fortune lol. 1199.
And the battery will degrade with time and use, it's just normal wear. Happens to all batteries. Actually it's one big issue to be considered when using battery equipment and their cost.

I agree today it is easy to get Ego batteries at the store, but when I went to look they were nearly impossible to buy and I wasn't sure if that was going to change. Although I was also surprised that the battery was not lasting nearly as long I liked the lawnmower and was more than willing to get another battery.
Never thought about how hard it might be to get replacement blades for the Makita mower although they tend to last years as long I don't hit something hard and really damage the blade.
One thing I like about the 2x18v mower is I already have a bunch of batteries for other tools and those batteries go on sale more frequently as separate items. I've also thrown in some larger 12ah batteries and the mower seemed to have more power.
I really debated on the Milwaukee but it was just released and it was difficult to think about spending another 200-300. Although I think the Milwaukee is a better mower in a lot of ways.

I would recommend a Toro over a Honda gas model just for the personal pace. I still like not having to get gas and if you are into a specific tool lineup the Makita can take adapters. I run it with Ridgid batteries with a LSA. The new 6ah Max Outputs fit perfectly inside.

I'd probably go for it if makita lawn mower folded down like every modern day mower because I mow my inlaws and parents house and I throw the mower in the back of my jeep. I just don't understand stand why!!! Why did they not include that it doesn't even have to be fancy I wouldn't mind unbolting some bolts and folding it down.

My yard is only about 4000 sq ft so it is really small and having to stop and wait 30 minutes is annoying and sometimes not possible later in the evening. I think Ego has a battery issue and some pros I've watched said they changed due to batteries degrading quickly. Still keeping my other Ego gear but trying out another brand for a lawn mower. But I eliminated other highly rated mowers for the same reason I couldn't just buy a spare battery. This seems like a major oversight as this would be the exact time (spring) people might need to purchase a new one.
Gas mower have a lot of things I don't like from needing to go get gas, changing oil and filters, noise. The biggest one was the noise I can mow at nearly anytime and no one even knows if they have the windows closed. The houses are close in my neighborhood so noise gets bad from commercial mowers. The cost of gas was minimal as I would use about a gallon a month but going to get it was the real annoying part.

L-ion batteries at higher voltages are just a total crap shoot. I've owned and ditched 3 different 48v+ mower/other tools after none of the batteries would last more than 1 season.
Never owned EGO and they DID seem to be an exception with the batteries. 4 years would have been worthy of a party compared to my experience.
$300-400 for a replacement is far from acceptable, even at 4 years.
In contrast I have 20v B&D batteries going back to 2013 (you'll learn to mark the year on these) that are still fully functional. New ones are CHEAP (generics that work very well with much larger capacity)
I have a 36v battery from an Ebike that is 8 years old (14.4 ah) and another that is 7 years and both have more than 80% of the original capacity.
EVERYTHING over 48v lasts a year. Maybe 2. That is IT........................36v will seem like a lot less power vs the 56v (it is), but it's "enough" to do a good job. The blade is slower with less torque, you'll have to slow down a bit in long grass. As you can hear the mower revs up on deeper grass and then backs off. In contrast the 56v seem to run at the high power all the time.
Most of the manufacturers have dropped back to 40v or even 20v now. seems to be the sweet sport of price/performance/longevity.

Hmm interesting never thought about the extra wear on batteries over 48v. The Ego mower did the same thing it would spin slow then rev up when hitting high grass. @@Nemesis099 I suspect it's the search for "gas engine" power that leads them to let the device demand more current than is healthy for the battery. The 36v and below has no aspirations of approaching gas engine power, so no attempt to push the envelope. I"ve watched the birth of the now exploding Ebike market and it was the controllers that "governed" the electric motors to a draw rate that was sustainable. Moving to a dual blade would have made the mower even better. But I never really had a major issue with it cutting to begin with. It wouldn't have helped increase the runtime which means I really need a second battery which I can't find to purchase. Other than that I liked my Ego and would have kept it. Just did a second mowing with the Makita and it did a great job and I hope the competition helps bring along more standard battery technology. Ego has been good at keeping a specific design but others have switched and have too many battery types which is bad for consumers.

This was a poorly made decision.
