Other points you didn't factor in: If you're sick of maintaining oil levels and changes/gas/filters/carburator maintenance, float bowls, cleaning injenction ports, winterizing..etc...After 15 years, I'm SICK of gas engine maintenance and want simplicity. Well, there's always the reel mower or sythe for exercise, I suppose! ..thanks!

I have Ego, mower, trimmer, blower and edger. I love their products, this was my second season using them without fail. I am using it on 6k sq ft lawn and in a neighborhood. My friends say it sounds like a box fan on high lol. I have 2 batteries, rarely do I run out of juice on the first but if I do it’s nice to have the second one. Charges in less than 45 mins. Another reason to get one is if you need to take it with you in an SUV or car trunk. Don’t have to worry about stinking up your car!

I bought this mower 2 seasons ago. This season, it wouldn't start due to some electrical issue. I called the EGO service and after a few questions, they looked if there was any repair service nearby. The closest one was a bit too far, so they decided to just send me a brand new one. Honestly love it and very surprised with the quality of service.

I have had 3 gas powered mowers in the past and ALL of them were horrible at cutting, and they required SO much maintenance and hauling them in every fall for further repairs. Briggs & Stratton, Craftsmen, Toro. I finally gave up and my neighbor had an EGO 21 self propelled mower for me to try. At first I was skeptical about it but my neighbor said hold on to hit and try it for a while so I kept it for two years and mowed his yard, mine, and my neighbor lady’s as well. I listened to this guy yap and my own experience was excellent and I highly recommend it. My front lawn is St Augustine, my south side and back are Bermuda. I have used 1-6 settings differently for both and as well my neighbors and EGO PREFORMED PERFECTLY. The battery last much longer than this person claims. My neighbor moved and took his EGO mower, hedge trimmer, weed eater with him. I purchased my own and I am glad I have because EGO HAS WORKED WONDERS- it does far better than any heavy duty gas powered mower
I would never listen to this guy EVER

I own the first generation E-GO mower. It's one of the best things I ever bought. I mow 1 to 2 times a week and I haven't noticed any appreciable loss of battery run time. I have a large yard, so sometimes I have to charge it for half an hour to finish up. No biggie, I just edge and blow for half an hour. It's a huge game changer to not have to maintain a gas engine. HUGE. The only maintenance is sharpening the blade each spring, which is quick with a cheap grinder. If you have a small shed, it saves you so much space because you can store it standing up. It's footprint is about 2x1 ft. Can't do that with a gas mower. The quality of the build is far superior than any gas mower I have had. There's no reason my Honda couldn't have a nice, well fitting, easy to collapse, comfortable handle, but for some reason every gas mower has cheap steel tube handles with wingnuts that you can KINDA fold over. The height adjustment is leagues better, as pointed out here, the thing is light as hell and so quiet that I can listen to an audio book or music while I mow. It's just better in almost every way. I guess they are supposed to have less torque than a gas mower, but I haven't noticed it bogging down in thick grass any more than my Honda did. Keep the blade sharp and it's a non issue for cool weather grasses. I could see how it might be an issue for those thick Florida grasses. Did I mention it has freakin headlights?? I thought that was a silly gimmick until I was able to finish up my lawn at sunset because the bright headlights allow me to see the cut line in the dark. I would have never known that was a good idea until I had it.
I don't see how your "reduced air volume when it's lowered" complaint wouldn't apply to any lawn mower. Why are you acting like that is specific to this EGO?

I have a Bermuda lawn with an ego mower. Works great even on the lowest setting. I have never had grass clippings underneath the deck. Of course I also don’t mow while I am running the sprinklers.

I have used a cordless electric mower for 22 years. Had a fescue lawn for 12 years, then a St. Augustine. Currently using a 12 year old B&D that I paid $400 for, and I purchased a second battery for $120. Still going strong, quiet, battery is easily removable. It starts first time, every time - even after being unused for 3-4 months over the winter. I’ll never go back to gas.

I bought my ego this year. Totally love it. I only cut the grass 2-3times a year. My reason was maintenance. Getting gas. Checking oil.filter. Filling it with gas. Cleaning carburetor. Replacing rope. Spark plug..list goes on. I’m a automotive mechanic and after fixing everyone else’s cars and such I didn’t want to work in my lawnmower..just makes life a little easier.

I have had my EGO lawn mower for 2 months now... and am very happy with the purchase! However... while the EGO promotional material lists the battery lasting for 60 minutes... that is affected by several things. If, for instance, you use the power drive and the mulching blade, there is no way you are going to get 60 mins of mowing time with the 7.5Ah battery. That gets cut down to about 40 mins. I can maybe get another 10 mins if I push the mower myself. Another issue is how 'green' your grass is. This year the rain has been just ridiculous... and the grass has been very wet (internally saturated). That makes clogging more frequent with the mulching blade which also kills battery faster. None of these are deal breakers for me... I would buy another one in a heartbeat. I also have the EGO string trimmer and chain saw. All three have met or exceeded my expectations.

  • @TimothyT230

My battery lasted 3 years. Somewhere in the vicinity of $400 for the battery so take that into account when evaluating economics. I have centipede and it does ok but I must admit the cut isn’t perfect. I can’t cut on the lowest setting. Mower doesn’t have the power to mow at the lowest setting where my grass is very thick. Not sure if it’s improved. I got one of the first ones.

You should be aware of the self-discharge feature on EGO batteries, if they're stored longer than a month they will discharge down to 30%. Since you mentioned you were getting it for a beach house. I love these batteries though, the 7.5 Ah is a beast!

I've had mine for a year and it's worked like a champ. I have a very big yard, so it does require a recharge about 2/3 of the way through. As I told my friends who questioned a battery powered mower, "The battery last longer than I do" so it's not a big deal. Yesterday my son and I cut the grass after about 3 weeks of heavy rain and so our grass was over 9 inches in some spots. This time it required 3 recharges even cutting at the highest cutting height. But again, I'm getting to the point (age) that I'm ok if I have to stop and take a break ;)

Maintenance on my ego is next to nil. Just sharpen the blade, that's it. No carburetor issues getting gummed up with bad gas. No smell. Not having to purchase gas. The list goes on and on. I love my ego mower. Just bought the newest select cut for my son as he was having all kinds of mechanical/carburetor issues with his gas model.

I've got the older EGO 21" push brushed mower. Had in for about three years. So here are some thoughts on the matter. My gas mower had jets for sea level and NO adjustments. I'm at 6,000ft so it ran very rich, like crap. Required a lot of maintenance. fouled the plugs all the time and the air filter always seemed plugged. Often very hard to start. By the time i got the Gas mower running i was to tired to mow the yard. The EGO electric is always ready to go, just pop the battery in and i am mowing. Got two batteries but one will mow the whole yard no problem. It is very quiet, you can't here it in the house. You do not get that tingling feeling in your hands from all the vibrations. It gets the job done. Down side is the EGO is about 10 pounds heavier, a foot longer, and does not mow as nice. If you get the New EGO Brush-less dual battery 21" self propelled you should be happy.

I love the channel. You are my "Go-To" when I need any advise. I've bought things that I never knew I needed because of your channel and I love it all! So thank you and keep up the great work.
I do have a however though . . . I've been a gas mower guy for decades, but after 8 mowers (At $400 to $600 each) in the last 25 years, I bought the metal deck, self-propelled 21" EGO. I have 14,000 sq. ft. and it is hands down the best mower I have ever owned and I will never, ever, go back to gas. I am not a brand guy, I just like what I like and don't what I don't. And I really like this mower. Since buying the bought a blower and a trimmer. Those are also better than my old gas ones.
PRO's; Convenience - Put the battery in an go. No more gas, oil, fouled plugs, servicing, filters, etc. Emissions - Zero, enough said. Noise - Mine is a whisper compared to gas mowers. I don't have any problems, none. I mow at different levels at different times of the year, even at the lowest level. BTW if you cut at the lowest level, don't cut you grass when it's wet and you won't get all those clippings under your mower.
CON's; Not as heavy. If you like stripes, you'll need to keep going over the same pattern to make/keep them. No other Con's. Love my mower!

I wish Doc would have done this video earlier. His take on this mower is spot on. I bought an EGO self-propelled mower, plus string trimmer and blower for my small Bermuda grass lawn in 2017. I LOVED the mower and all its features EXCEPT that it will not cut Bermuda grass short once its fully into the aggressive growing season. It will bog down and literally rip the Bermuda grass out by the roots. I sold it to my buddy for his St. Augustine lawn here in Houston and it works brilliantly... he's very pleased. I did keep the trimmer and blower and really, really like both units.

I've been using an ego 21-in mower for about 7 months now. It's the most amazing mower that I probably ever used even better than some gas powered mowers that I've used. Here's the problem.. it's plastic on plastic gearing and this is where the problem starts. Already starting to have problems it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that plastic on plastic is not going to last over a period of time and a short period of time from what I have come to find out.

I lucked out as Home Depot was transitioning Ego out after their agreement changed... I was able to pickup a backpack blower WITH a 7.5Ah battery for $180. I definitely had to do a double take and would've gotten more than one if it hadn't been the last one on the floor.

  • @frankiecastillo7016
    @frankiecastillo7016 3 роки тому +3

I use all ego products for my mowing business. Best way to stock up on batteries is to buy refurbished items from acme tools that come with the battery. The backpack blower comes with a 5ah battery and it's $199. 5ah batteries are $250 alone. Sometimes acme has 10% off when you buy 2 refurbished ego items so you can get 2 batteries for around $350 and have some spare blowers. Or you could sell the blowers on offer up without the batteries for $100 and that makes your 2 batteries price go down to $150 instead of $500.

Actually, the larger the yard and the more you mow, the more money you save by getting off gas. Most people don't realize how much money they spend powering their gas mowers over a 10 year period. It's easily in the hundreds of dollars on a decent sized property. I've been using a puny Greenworks 40V 19 inch mower on my 2 acre property (>1/2 acre of bumpy, wild grass) since 2012 and it's only cost me a new blade (there's lots of rocks on my lawns) and new rear wheels. I'm looking forward to the new tech which will allow me to get the job done more quickly.

A few years ago, my wife got me the trimmer. A year later when I replaced the carb on my mower for the third time, we got the mower too. It’s a single cut self propelled. Big differences I see to yours is the front wheels on mine seem further forward, which makes tight corners tough. Also the battery door is the other way, and the light switch is on the body, not handle. But I love it. I can mow my 4K of grass twice on a charge, and I only charge my trimmer battery a couple times a year. Good stuff. The high lift blade really made the mower bag a LOT better. It even sounds angrier. Maybe the second blade makes a lot of difference already? I dunno, but the other blade works wonders for me. It sucks up leaves like a pro!

Batttery powered lawn mowers work just fine on bermuda grass. I’ve used one for a while and cannot tell the difference unless you let your lawn go and get too height. And all lawns that you cut too low aren’t going to look good without a lot of maintenance. Also don’t forget about older people or people that have back issues or other medical reasons that make gas harder to operate.

The extended warranty through Amazon does not cover batteries.
According to Amazon: "Thank you for your question. This protection plan is designed to cover your item for mechanical and electrical failures due to normal use. Replaceable components such as batteries are considered consumable items and are not covered by this plan. However, if the unit has a built-in battery that cannot be user replaced, we would be able to consider failures with it as a claimable issue."

EGO has great engineering. For a normal suburban yard they work great if you have at least two batteries. They are expensive but remember that gas mowers require constant maintenance. Now get a hedge trimmer and a leaf blower that use the same battery. What I like best is that I can listen to my Audible books while mowing, because of the lower noise. Also, the 650 Leaf Blower is so powerful that I can shovel my driveway with it in the winter if the snow is fluffy.

I bought this new Ego this spring and it’s done great for me and my 23,000+ sq ft yard. Obviously, it takes more than one charge. I mow about 2/3 of the yard on one charge, then switch over to doing my trimming and edging and blowing while the battery recharges. It fills up enough in that half hour or so for me to then finish the yard. I feel most criticisms of electric mowers focus on the idea that they’re only good for small yards, as though people can’t manage their time wiser, like I’ve described above. I’ve even found the headlights useful for finishing up the yard into the dusk, since I’m not as concerned about the noise disturbing my neighbors since it’s so quiet. My wife can’t even hear it from inside the house. The only day to day problem I have with it is the grip. Traditional mowers have two levers, one for blade engage, and one for drive. The Ego has one for blade, (though it starts backwards with the labeled power button actually being the safety,) and just two thumb buttons on either side for drive. These buttons are annoying to keep depressed, especially on turns or hills or whenever I’m not applying direct pressure to the back of the mower. After a couple hours it definitely cramps my hands up pretty good in a way a traditional mower with a lever for each control never did. I’ve tried different handlebar adjustments to find a more comfortable grip, but nothing really helps. Not a major concern, but if you already have grip problems in your hands or something like cerebral palsy or whatever, I could see this being a legitimate problem for you.

I just bought it and because of a flat tire it had to mow almost the full 3/4 acre lawn. Lawn was really tall too due to getting the lawn aerated and over-seeded. Did it like a champ and still had about 1/3 battery left. Main reason for the purchase was for upright storage in the garage. It’s general use won’t be for the full lawn, just our drainage ditch and a few other areas my John Deere can’t get.
But I love the ego line. Originally bought the new trimmer and 650cfm blower (originally bought the 580, but exchanged for the 650) this year. Will get the pole saw and edger next year. I’m a full blown ego fanboy. Debating selling my Husqvarna chainsaw and buying the ego there too. Always buy the kits though, unless you don’t need anymore run time! It’s by far the cheapest way to get the batteries!

This is probably the most realistic review I've seen about Ego Mower. I have the first generation Ego Power Mower and it chokes on grass clippings if I cut them low without the bag attachment like you stated. Also, the battery has a tendency to overheat during hot weather and it's safety will shut it down when I'm about 2/3 done with mowing my lawn--not a big deal since the down time allows me to drink some water or ice cold beer. Overall, I'm happy with Ego Power tools for the fact I can swap batteries between tools and no need to mess with gas and oil lubricants. I just bought the Ego polesaw without the battery and battery charger to add to my collection which includes the mower, hedge trimmer, leaf blower, and weed whacker all of which I bought before they introduced the Multi-Head System.

Really great review. Wish I'd seen it before buying. Living in Ireland the grass is definitely too wet for this to work efficiently. Full disclosure, I'm a landscaper and wanted to switch to all battery tools. I use the mower almost every day for most of the year. The pros are the storage and quietness. The cons are that it doesn't work well on grass that's even slightly damp.
MAJOR CON. The batteries are terrible. 3 of my 4 batteries have given up the ghost. 2 only worked for two weeks.
The tools themselves are great but the batteries let the whole thing down imo.

Loving my 2nd gen 60 volt Greenworks mower! Cuts great at any height. Plus it has a turbo over ride button to suck up the leaves in the fall. In fact I’ve went all cordless with all my outdoor tools. Hedge trimmers are amazing. The 610 CFM blower is a beast, along with the string trimmer. I could’ve be happier and they save tons of time cause of the no maintenance. The best thing is the mower always starts! Even when it’s 20 degrees outside.

This is the most accurate review of EGO battery lawn mower I have seen on UA-cam - I like the recommendations you gave. I have been using EGO self-propelled for five years and I just bought an extra one this past Summer. I appreciate your tips on everything you have been publishing. Thank you.

3 years and I never had a problem. I am ready to upgrade to the special cut. Totally disagree with your personal opinion. I guess if I was going to put value to your opinion, I would have many blocks checked. I cut a tall St Agustine, I hate the smell of gas inside the garage, I have an 9,000 sq feet yard.

I bought one of these lawnmowers two weeks ago absolutely the worst thing I’ve ever done Bulky and hard to operate even at low setting the front end picks up and gives it an uneven cut really sorry I bought this piece of junk

My suggestion is to store your lithium batteries in the house between uses and don’t expose them to the extreme temperatures in your storeroom. My ego battery as well as my string trimmer battery has lasted 4 years with no problems this way.

Pre-pandemic, I bought a reconditioned Ego (presumably not the current year's model) from Home Depot but had mixed feelings about it. It came with the larger battery, which was good for two mowings of my yard. The single lever height adjustment is nice, but once I have the height set for my yard I wouldn't use it again. The killer for me was that it didn't cut that well, even with the high lift blade that I put in it. It would miss tufts of grass and when bagging it didn't vacuum anywhere near as well as my old Honda gas mower. The drive mechanism is noisy, as you can hear in the video and you have to learn to let off on it as you come up at right angles to obstructions, like a concrete garden border, or you can't roll it back away due to the wheels being locked in drive mode. You have to drag it back. The other negative for me was that you could only adjust cut height in 1 inch increments.
I learned that Toro had come out with an electric and I ended up returning the Ego and getting the Toro. It has a smaller battery but it is fine for cutting my lawn; I recharge after each mowing. It adjusts its height in 1/2 inch increments and vacuums almost as well as my Honda did. The drive mechanism is vastly superior: there is a second part of the handle that is spring-loaded and the mower reacts to pressure to go faster and maintain its speed relative to the pressure from how fast you are walking; and it is much quieter. You can install the bag coming down between the handles, which you can't with the Ego, and it packs an amazing amount into the bag. It cuts almost as well as my Honda did, with just an occasional missed blade that I have to go back over. The handle folds over without having to collapse it and you can then stand it on end. It also comes with a washout port on the deck to make cleaning the underside easier. The current model Ego may have corrected some of the issues I found but buyers should be aware of other options, as well.

That's funny because a lot of people with large lawns might disagree. I've seen many videos with people doing an incredible amount of grass.

Same here. I will say I've noticed it tug at some of the stolons and they look like carpet snags, but that is because I inherited a poorly managed lawn with bermuda that was cut too tall by some neighborhood kid before we moved in. I slowly lowered the cutting height down as the summer went on to about a 3, (1.7 inches), and after a spring scalp and some leveling after the growth gets underway, I hope to drop it all the way down to a 1, (1.2 inches). My yard is about 6800sq.ft. and the battery on it never drips below 50% by the time I'm done. It's an amazing machine.

I have the 7.5 battery and have no issues with at all. Cuts all my yard in one charge.
The gas is so bad with all the additives they put in it, I just got sick and tired of having to tear the carb apart every season to get them started.

My Toro has a 2 lever height adjustment which i prefer as it allows me to set the front higher and rear lower when mulching leaves. Also leaving rear higher than front by 1 notch can be beneficial when trying to mulch grass that is a bit over grown or very lush in the springtime.

My challenge with the ego was on higher levels. Didn’t feel their was enough of vacuumed to cut taller grass evenly. Left a number of stray long blades. Tried a couple of them and ended up returning them and sticking with my rider, just cuts more consistently.

I have a tall fescue lawn (Northern Virginia) and I will get an Ego in the Spring. Good point on the air volume and I am thinking that those who cut low like your beautiful lawn and who want to go electric, they could consider an electric reel mower. (Premium models include: Swardman Electra or the Allett Liberty 43, for example).
I did what you did on the blower. I have the Ego backpack blower with a 7.5 AH battery from Home Depot on close out. When Lowes gets the Ego mowers in the store this spring, I will get one of those - hopefully with a 75 AH battery. My yard has a ton of leaves in the fall and the 7.5 AH blower will do the front yard or the back yard. So when I get the mower, I will have enough blower battery capacity to do the whole yard.

Was one of the only mowers that would cut tall wet st. augustine grass 6+ inches. The only downside on electric mowers for me is when you want to add a mulching blade which tends to be heavier. 1/2 oz difference in blade weight will cut the mowers run time in half.

And reason # 10... if you have little above average EXtra ZIPPY doggies that like to get a quick nose full of GAS and break the doggies speed barrier and your trying to ween them off the GAS from your gas lawnmower... you MITE want to go electric 👍

Finally broke down and bought an EGO electric push mower this spring for our small suburban yard, now I'm watching the videos. One of the big reasons I bought it was the lack of noise. After mowing cemeteries throughout high school and early 20s without hearing protection I have damaged ears. My kids are starting to mow and they either won't wear hearing protection or have their ear buds in and cranked up to tinnitus so I decided to give one a try. If the battery holds out I'll never buy another gas mower again. Course I'm hoping to get 20 years out of this mower.

Doc I got the same EGO Model as you except I use a 10 AMP battery and with this battery you have 50% more torgue as compared to the 5 AMP battery you used. The 10 AMP battery completely fills the bagger. try it and you will be amazed.

I just got one it's AWESOME. I didn't have a problem cutting grass low has I needed to and even bagged tall water grass. And I wouldn't never buy a tool only because if look at the price, the lawnmower with no battery is $500 then the charger is $200 then the battery is $350 that's $1050 so when you get it all together for $650 is a steal.
