Watching this concert changed my life in 1985. It was on MTV on a Saturday night. I had begun getting into EC but his music became an obsession after this.. Tim Renwick, of course, plays brilliantly here as well. Great stuff all around.
This is perhaps my favourite Eric Clapton concert song version, Tim Renwick and Eric are just stunning on this song, lifting it to a higher level than ever before. Totally awesome. Thanks for running this I never tire of this masterpiece. Rock On.
I was also at this amazing concert - some of the best versions of his songs I've ever heard were played that night. Remember it like it was yesterday...
TOTALLY agree, John. I was at this Hartford show in '85 and loved every minute. When we got in and saw all the boom cameras, we knew we were in for one awesome night!
By far, my favorite version of this song. Clapton's back-up guitarists are always brilliant: mark knopfler, phil palmer and tim renwick are great examples of them. Thanks for uploading.
Yes, I got into Al Stewart because of the great Electric guitar sound he had. I thought it was Albert Lee when he played with Clapton, He is my 3rd favourite guitarist behind Gilmour and Latimer.
This is true. EC is a very generous man when it comes to sharing the stage. Still, EC has upped his game in the past few years and is a more exciting performer as a result.
Toby, I was there in the audience that night in Hartford, and your great uncle WAS great playing along with Eric. The live version of this song especially is the very best I have ever heard!
I saw the live 85 concert on tv soon after the video release and bought the video, I've watched it scores of times and claptons solos still blow me away every time, seen him play live twice, back in 89 and again just last year, but I would have loved to have been at the Hartford Connecticut concert cause the atmosphere and his playing looks out of this world !
I was at this show!! I still have the ticket in my collection. We did not know it was going to be filmed until we saw a sign on the door walking in that said "You are being filmed for MTV" I have the vhs and just recently converted it to DVD. The show was long. He did at least 2 extended encores. The video edited out a few of the tunes but most of the standards are there.
I like this period of Eric Clapton's work. Check out his Mean Woman Blues with Carl Perkins & friends. He's on fire playing Rock n Roll riffs on "Blackie"
I cannot imagine what it would feel like to be ripping a solo on badge and look over to see Clapton smiling at you as he plays the rhythm part. Judging from the way Tim was jumping around afterwards it feels really good.
I agree that Tim definitely had the hot hand that night - you could see EC was loving it! - IMHO it shows that EC isn't concerned about others grabbing the light, if the music is great - notice in Layla, Tim had the Lead line. i think EC noticed TIM was HOT and gave him more front time.
Tim Renwick's solo here is better than Clapton (as was George Terry's on OGWT in '77 also on utube periodically). I heard or read somewhere that Hartford '85 was the last time Blackie was used. Cheers.
Yes there is and I have it. I bought it from somewhere on t'internet but it's almost certainly a bootleg. The title is 'Eric Clapton Live Hartford Civic Center CT. 1985. Good luck!
It used to be called The Behind the Sun concert like the album from that year. I used to rent this VHS from the locale video store. My buddy made me a copy when it aired on Showtime back in '86 for the first time. Great show
Tim Renwick is good, but is no match for the master, as far as him having a better lead than Clapton on this track is excuse the expression, absolute bollocks !!!

One of the best all time Clapton & band performances ever !

Clapton and Co. are on FIRE in this song!
Nice to see a legend like Clapton give space to the excellent Tim Renwick, and clearly enjoy his playing too. Great piece of film.
I was at this concert! I think it was the second time I saw EC live.
By far, my favorite version of this song. Clapton's back-up guitarists are always brilliant: mark knopfler, phil palmer and tim renwick are great examples of them.

Albert Lee, George Terry, Doyle, Andy,...
Tim Renwick matched Eric Clapton on this one but Tim has played fantastic solos on Al Stewart's albums too.
Yes, I got into Al Stewart because of the great Electric guitar sound he had.
I thought it was Albert Lee when he played with Clapton, He is my 3rd favourite guitarist behind Gilmour and Latimer.
Tim plays very imaginative solo. Clapton, Tim both favourite. Lovely to see them both playing together
instablaster...
Dark and Rolling Sea. Sublime
Tim is better than Eric

Tim Renwick... a Guitar Master!... remembering Modena... RocK ON!
If music were an Olympic event, this would be the greatest achievement of all time. Past, present and future.
one of the best songs in the whole world
Awesome 80s pop-infused versions of his songs on this night. One of his best recorded performances!
Yes, Tim is my great uncle - and great he is!

Wow, I wish I was there but I wasn't even born then haha. And I agree, love this performance!
one of my fav guitarists from erics bands past and present
I think Tim outplayed Eric when I saw this tour at Concord Pavilion July 23 ...
He's your great uncle? Could you please tell him he's just GREAT!
absolutely beautiful
that strumming! beautiful
Super cool Clapton, the man oozes charisma!
Tim is one of the best playing the devine notes.
...saw him on this tour "Behind the Sun" .....1985! thanks for uploading this...

The drummer's hair should be preserved for future generations!

Wow very cool man epic! Wish I was there too!
Had to favorite this one, cheers from Texas!!
A great song performed by a great artist. What's not to like?
U see Clapton was shaking head while Tim played. He was just enjoying Tim solo so much.
I like this period of Eric Clapton's work. Check out his Mean Woman Blues with Carl Perkins & friends. He's on fire playing Rock n Roll riffs on "Blackie"
sat 2nd row for this show.
Best version I've heard so far. Thanks for upload.
Same
5.15 min Eric just shaking his head. Tim is different level. Eric acknowledged. No ego thing between greats
The video had to cut off abruptly because BADGE transitions straight into LET IT RAIN.
Wow! They all had a lot of hair!!
Great song!
My god those fingers on Clapton. Anyone who got to see this live is a lucky prick!
I cannot imagine what it would feel like to be ripping a solo on badge and look over to see Clapton smiling at you as he plays the rhythm part. Judging from the way Tim was jumping around afterwards it feels really good.
From what Tim says, Eric was a really cool and chill guy to jam with. Clapton loved hearing the other musicians shine.
Awesome playing and awesome strat, really cool bite and sting yet still sounds so sweet :)))
tim is the man!
I was there.
thanks for vid dude i was at this show
@wolfdog1959 There's a DVD of this concert,
I agree that Tim definitely had the hot hand that night - you could see EC was loving it! - IMHO it shows that EC isn't concerned about others grabbing the light, if the music is great - notice in Layla, Tim had the Lead line. i think EC noticed TIM was HOT and gave him more front time.

Tim Renwick as back up is my favorite version of this tune. But for some reason the audio on this track is sub-par. would someone care to remix it?
@strobelightbeam Yes, sure, they too!! ;-)
Thankfully, most of us don't do mullets like that anymore!
4:32
As much as i love clapton, Tim Renwick had the better extended lead.
some pretty dense chorus at around 4'30"
is there a DVD or VHS of this concert and if so does anyone know the name??
Yes there is and I have it. I bought it from somewhere on t'internet but it's almost certainly a bootleg. The title is 'Eric Clapton Live Hartford Civic Center CT. 1985. Good luck!
I found it online and bought a copy, Thanks for the help!
It used to be called The Behind the Sun concert like the album from that year. I used to rent this VHS from the locale video store. My buddy made me a copy when it aired on Showtime back in '86 for the first time. Great show
i was able to find and buy it on DVD. probably watched it 100 times already
Master musician. Beethoven reincarnated.
This is Probably not 1985
Yes it is it was Filmed in 35 mm on May 1, 1985 at the Civic Centre, Hartford, Connecticut. and aired on MTV then later released on video.
That other guy absolutely blew Clapton off the stage. Is it Andy Fairweather Low?
It’s Tim Renwick who would tour with Pink Floyd a few years later.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA NOW I"M SURE, CHUCK NORRIS IMMITATED CLAPTON !!!
Tim Renwick is good, but is no match for the master, as far as him having a better lead than Clapton on this track is excuse the expression, absolute bollocks !!!
