To be fair to him, he's 40 here and an ex heroin and drug addict, but still very much an alchoholic (although he looks pretty sober in this performance).
In 2 months he'll be 76, completely sober and drug free. I'd say he's doing ok.

That riff just gets me everytime. It's so good. Everytime he plays it, I'm like, "Oh boy, here we go." One of the best riffs in rock history.

Clapton didn’t play the guitar solo on the album Layla. It was played by Duane Allman.

It's not about recording a show, it's about other people being able to watch it with their own eyes.

For those of us watching this live, it was the greatest day in music ever. I remember exactly where I was. Nothing better than the 80's
Damn right!
I remember exactly where I was! I was there!
It was almost exactly 36 years ago, down to the time of day. Right around sunset, Clapton tore into this one. One of the highlights for a 17-year-old me in the crowd.
So lucky I wasn’t even born yet

Less than two weeks after this performance, three out of the top five albums in the U.K were by Eric Clapton
that intro gave me goosebumps , look at the crowd , no mob phones :) everyone enjoy the concert
I never get tired of this song! That intro chords grabs me every time.
Shaun Murphy (singer) said of this performance - "We came out and the audience was kinda cheering. Then Eric hit the chords for Layla and I have to tell you it was the most incredible feeling, it was absolutely physical. The shouting and the clapping pushed us all backwards about 3 steps. We just kinda looked at each other and continued on. But, I’d never felt like that before or since, it was an amazing experience."
Happy 79th Birthday EC!

Eric aside but Phil was used like a rented mule for Live Aid! He performed with Sting in London then flew to Philly and did sets with Eric (3 songs), 2 solo works, and then drums with Led Zeppelin for 3 songs!

I prefer the NYC version around 1999 or 2000. Best solo I have heard. It gave me the "That would be my future daughters name" feeling.

Live Aid revived this great man's career and put him back in the spotlight. He sure was famous because of his earlier work but after this, newer audiences began to take interest in him. 2 of the top 3 albums on the billboard were his. He just took off all over again after this. So glad this happened.
Watched this performance stage right as I was working the show for Spectaguard in Philly from 5:30 am to midnight, not realizing how monumental this show would be and wish I could go back to those days with all the insanity we now live under.

Eric Clapton is one of those musicians who is always improved by who he surrounds himself with. Great performance and great band. I grew up with my parents blasting this song over and over.
Much respect to Eric on this performance, a great song, a staple for everyone. When I first saw this video I didn't know that Mr. Collins was on the drums. Eric Clapton, Phil Collins, It's great music and there has to be some sort of pause in life for society, take a deep breath and remember that you just heard a great song and performance..Job well done to the band, A great song.
The piano break in this song will always be one of my favorite pieces of music history. So beautiful, arguably the most recognizable piano part in rock history too. Queen or Elton may take that cake though. Lol
I always think of _Goodfellas_ now when I hear it. A little weird, I know, but not a bad thing at all. 😄 Iconic song, iconic film.
Agreed Elton and Queen are amazing rock piano also. And ofc who can forget Billy Joel ?!
I hate the reprise. Kills the passion.
Sharky165 One of the best movies of all time, no doubt! I always think of that scene too when I hear it. Poor Carbone and many others. 😂
Also, how could I forget Joel?!?! You’re absolutely right. Styx also wrote some legendary piano songs!
Hello Polly I agree
Go listen to "Time" by Rita Coolidge and you'll see where it came from.
There is so much passion in him and the music. This much passion between a man and woman is wonderful and at the same time scary.
I love Eric Clapton he’s so talented from playing with a plastic guitar as a boy to bein a guitar legend! Definitely my fav artist
Everyone: I love how Eric is just wearing work clothes
Eric: but- I like these clothes
He loved the look and loved clothes so much that he purchased a clothing store. A man of many talents. All of the rock gods back in the 80s dressed in suits--Mark Knopfler did in his concert with Clapton. Bowie & Phil Collins as well. Some of the best music ever! Great concerts.
