I can't tell you how tired I am of this discussion. Under every single John Mayer video some idiots have to constantly compare Mayer to SRV, Clapton, Hendrix, B.B. King,... I mean - what is the point of doing that? First of all, it seems like people cannot get over the fact that Mayer is a undoubtedly great guitarist. You just can't say that he's a "bad" or average player. That's just not true! Simply judging him on his technique, speed, touch and tone this guy is a fucking great guitarist and far above the average player. I also think that blues lovers and Mayer critics can't get over the fact that he is so versatile. He came from Acoustic pop, went on to the blues and now ended up making two country records. Imagine SRV writing a pop song - I don't know if he could pull it of. And he doesn't have to but all I'm saying is that Mayer succeeded in every single genre by winning Grammy's, getting great feedback by other artists and selling millions of records. To me that is what makes him such a great musician that he is a pure pop artists, while being able to play a fucking solid and beautiful blues (Out Of My Mind), and on top playing some laid back country without using all the cheesy lyrics. People can't wrap their head around someone who can do that. Step into another genre and just cracking it. Many blues players dedicated their life to Blues music and there's nothing wrong with that. But there's this Mayer guy who dedicated his life to all sorts of music so he can't be the master of every single genre he plays. Well, he's definitely on his way to become a true legend if you ask me. Then thirdly all those people judging him and his guitar skills constantly try to argue against Mayers unassailable recognition by other artists. Clapton doesn't just say things like: 'He is a master guitar player.' for no reason. He isn't inducting SRV in the Hall Of Fame for no reason and so on. And then there's the big discussion over his private life. Oh my God. Get a life people! When I'm interested in music I don't care about who's girl this guys sleeping with. And if you're that kind of guy you at least gotta respect him for sleeping with a list of women many of us would be happy to only shake hands with. Imagine you're getting overpured with money and fame in your early twenties. How would you react? It's just plain naive and stupid to judge him on mistakes he made without us being in his position. john mayer has more talent in his thumb then any of the people talking about how "average" he is combined. Both are legendary guitarists of differents eras and I personally love both of them. Anyone who plays guitar can respect their talents.
Al Kelly I listened to you stuff and your technically proficient. But you're not nearly as listenable. Doesn't matter how technically good you are what matters is can the average person sit and listen to you play for hours. Ppl go to mayers concerts just to hear him play. Don't see that happening for you.
Watching John play with any of the blues legends is great. I watched him do a set with B.B. King and it was by far the most kick ass thing I have ever seen. John is a badass.
R-P-G-O music lovers Again how do you measure his skills? By looking at how many awards they have won? how many discs they have sold? How many suscribers they have on vevo? There is no way to measure an artist's talent son.
Like it or not you are looking at a master passing down the torch so to speak. Clapton will always have his spot among the best and now you can give John a seat right next to him. Don't compare just listen, these guys are masters. I do know that SRV is the person John used as inspiration. I even seen him play with double trouble live. He is not Clapton, Page, Jimi, or SRV but he is John m and he is very good.
JM is a great player, but to say you can put him right next to EC is a real STRETCH ! EC is the most revered and influential guitarist of his generation. He has set the bar so high that few if any will ever reach or surpass him. JM cannot in any way be put in the same conversation in terms of influence or ability when comparing their career
@@robmorrison1043 Jimi Hendrix is the most revered and influential guitar player from that generation period. @@ItsGarrettBrah , LMAO. same old dopey false story myth you WaynevWorlds guys fantasize about! JH was not close to Clapton in ability, phrasing, scales or blues knowledge. JH could have never pulled off anywhere close to the playing EC developed into throughout his career. JH was extremely innovative, but a sloppy live player and a passable vocalist. The fact he died way to soon, has added to the legend and fascination about his abilities!
Mayer has been playing alongside all the legends since he was young, now he's one of the best himself. It's awesome seeing his talents validated throughout the years.
These comments are rather annoying. Clapton is a great guitar player and John mayer is a great guitar player as well. You old timers who are stuck in "the good ol' days" type of reaction, are missing the point of music. Music evolves and the 70's aren't here anymore, it's 2014 so you should appreciate an artist like John Mayer keeping that kind of music/generation alive. John Mayer IMO is easily the best performing artist of the 20th century and if you think I'm wrong, go to one of his concerts. He's an amazing musician and one that deserves more credit from you old school mentality people.
I'm not old I'm irritated that there r tons of great guitarist that u never heard of because they stood their ground and stuck with blues rock. Johns a sellout. I admit though in this performance he does outshine Clapton but recently he is getting boring and old himself. Is he sick or something. Last cd wat a friggin boring mess. Do u know Chris Duarte, Mato Nanji of Indigenous, Jonny Lang very humble btw, Kenny Wayne shepherd, the list is endless Eric Gales, etc etc etc.
Come on man, I can respect his playing, but not the best live performing artist. Page could still come on stage and be easily the best living legend to have one of the biggest impacts on rock and roll period.
spencer no offence intended, but mayer was like 19 in 2000, and had had little success. So as to being the best performing artist of the 20th century, I think he's not in the running (you DO know we're in the 21st century, right?). If he is to turn out to be a legend, it will be after decades of sustained high quality, ground-breaking work. It is annoying to me that you millennials who are still wet behind the ears are ready to tag every flash-in-the-pan as the greatest ever. Live a few years and see if you don't start to take a longer view of things, and put the right-now in perspective. You have no concept of 'ever', or even of 'the century'. He is a very gifted musician, and time will tell whether he is great.

I like how Mayer starts soloing and Clapton smiles, it's approval. Clapton wouldn't be up there if he didn't enjoy Mayer's work.
Standing at the Cotswolds. Great tune
Never heard of John Mayer but saw Clapton in the sixties and Mayer is incredibly awesome!
john mayer has more talent in his thumb then any of the people talking about how "average" he is combined.
Al Kelly hahahahahahahahaha you're just hilarious
especially that thumb. it does things that make me uncomfortable
Yeah, and that's only his left thumb!
Watching John play with any of the blues legends is great. I watched him do a set with B.B. King and it was by far the most kick ass thing I have ever seen. John is a badass.
The old and the young - what a wonderful thing the 'blues' truly is.
Crossroads a timeless classic.
I'm Clapton's fan but Mayer is right on the top of the top!
I don't know musical history too well, but what an honor it must be for this Eric fellow to be able to play with the great John Mayer like this...
You mean what an honor for John, right?
There's a reason they call some women 'dumb blondes' ....
Clapton is ten times more experienced than mayer, well I'm not saying anything bad about mayer it an honour for him to play with clapto
R-P-G-O music lovers Again how do you measure his skills? By looking at how many awards they have won? how many discs they have sold? How many suscribers they have on vevo? There is no way to measure an artist's talent son.
Well I measure music by hearing I don't give a damn about the ratings
Like it or not you are looking at a master passing down the torch so to speak. Clapton will always have his spot among the best and now you can give John a seat right next to him. Don't compare just listen, these guys are masters. I do know that SRV is the person John used as inspiration. I even seen him play with double trouble live. He is not Clapton, Page, Jimi, or SRV but he is John m and he is very good.
kevin hinson Well put!
Mayer is a Holiday Inn talent who has written any licks of his own
@@robmorrison1043 Jimi Hendrix is the most revered and influential guitar player from that generation period. He made Clapton walk off stage in shock in about 10 seconds of opening Cream's set when he jammed with them for the first time. Jimi Hendrix reinvented guitar playing; no one has played the same since.
Clapton and Bramhall loving that Mayer will keep music alive dang he's so good
Gotta be the earliest in the morning EC’s ever had to play!
Clapton still has those great smooth riffs....like cream.
things God does .. when he is in a good mood .... bringing two of his best boys together for us to hear and enjoy ....!
Mayer has been playing alongside all the legends since he was young, now he's one of the best himself. It's awesome seeing his talents validated throughout the years.
What a flow..... JM guitarsolo is a blast. Playing with such attitude and confidence. I can imagine EC is proud!
wanna go back to when I was like 7/8 n dedicate my whole life to the guitar.
Dedicate it now
the way everyone is just standing still in the crowd filming drives me crazy, how can you not move to this song
That was four minutes and five seconds of pure Blues power They both play off each other so well
You would never know john is a freak from his records... but he's one of my favorite guitarists of all time.
John Nailed it. That feels while soloing. A great guitarist
Eric Clapton still the man.
Blues
Blues
Nice to see two excellent guitarists ,watch collectors jam it out true pride to the music business
What an honor for this Eric fellow to play with the great John Mayer!
Haha that's funny, good one
That little look Clapton gave John at 1:21 as if to say 'go kill 'em' and then the little smile at 1:30 that just says 'thats my boy'
Great performance by two musical geniuses! Love Mayers voice.
When I'm down this restores my faith in the brilliance of humankind.
R.I.P. ginger baker. Still a piece of fine music in 2022. Yaaaaya
Dig it up.
2:10 Mayer’s grin definitely says “holy shit I just killed that.”
Mayer and Clapton really can't get any better enuff said
GROOVE ON MAYER AND SOUL ON CLAPTON. WHAT A TREAT.
Amazing...what a wonderful band. I loved to watch this musical concert. Thank you for sharing. Fingers are dancing on guitar strings. 🙏👌👏👏
0:46 that little crack in Clapton’s voice sounds incredible
IKR it still fits with the song
I’ve hear a lot about John Mayer and this is the first time I’ve heard him and damn he sounded more like Clapton than Clapton did.
hahahaha so good!
Keep watching Mayer solos. This dude may be the best we have. Specifically his Grateful Dead work.
Tbf Clapton is pretty old and probably not as quick as he used to be. But yeah Mayer is a beast, his solos are amazing
TWO IDOLS
IN ONE VIDEO.
the very best 240p video on youtube. you can't change my mind.
Clapton is still one of the guitar gods
Go to an EXPERIENCE HENDRIX concert. Than get back to us. Lots of great guitarists out there that are young.
That smile on Clapton's face when he heard JM follow up on his solo note for note that if not paying attention you 'll just think it is from one guitar when both guitars are speaking. Nicely played John Mayer. sounded so
Absolutely wonderful sound and rhythm!
There are two reasons to hate on JM: jealousy or musical ignorance
go and do better you clickbait idiot
Capt Termite Add brain after termite in your username
This is the most accurate thing I've ever read.
yep
@distalmarginalridge :)
Damn, Mr. C Is Smooth !
Mayer playing some epic Clapton licks...
No.... Mayer is a far better player then Clapton.
The master of an earlier generation and the master of the new. Two incredible talents, two ages. The torch is passed on.
How good are you?
John Mayer: Eric Clapton plays Rhythm guitar for me
Hi would love to know what you think of my 17 year old grandsons cover of this ua-cam.com/video/cn2zhT2PX3U/v-deo.html
@@brendahawkins3965 hes doing a great job, keep going and he'll be big in the near future
This Eric Clapton is really talented. He might could come out big one day...
Eberhard Schmidt Sorry, I don‘t speak Kraut language
