You are a champion !! i'd never attempt such a job just to replace the spark plugs. Mitsubishi should be ashamed of themselves for designing such an engine and not thinking of the poor mechanic.
Hey FCAS, just wanted to upate you and let you know the job is complete!! The total work time having no clue until we watched your video was roughly two and a half hours between my Wife and I with 2 ratchets, extensions, 10mm, 12mm and 14mm on our 2004 Dodge Stratus R/T 3.0L 24V. We didn't take the whole top end off as we just were doing plugs, wires, and gaskets, we just unhooked everything except a like 8" long line running from the manifold to the engine and pivoted the manifold out of the way. Everything looks great, the car is running amazingly, and we learned the previous owner still had factory plugs in the back that were so burnt you couldn't even see the white (they were deep-amber burnt, not just soot) Thank you SO much for your video, you saved us a lot of headache and money!! To anyone about to dive into this project, LABEL YOUR BOLTS! They have numbers on them (4 and 7s are different as one is a tapping bolt, and the other is normal threaded, MIXING THESE UP WILL CROSSTHREAD THE HOLES!) and you're GOLDEN! It honestly LOOKS a lot worse than it actually is, it's not nearly as hard as we thought it'd be. My only other suggestion to everyone else is grab a valve cover gasket, and the gasket for the intake manifold, because they are only a few bucks and most of the time need to be ordered from a parts store, so just have them handy that way if you DO need them, you have them, and if you don't, well you'll need them eventually anyways.
First Off Great Video! I did a couple things differently though to make it easier on me. 1) the black support that runs from one side strut mount to the other just at the firewall 4 nuts and two bolts and it makes it sooo much easier to get those rear manifold bolts. 2) I just COULD NOT get the coolant hose off the throttle body so I just disconnected the throttle body from the manifold 4 bolts EASY! Thanks again for the video!!
I own a 03 Mitsubishi Eclipse GTS and was feeling cocky like I could do this by myself just to change the spark plugs. After watching this video I re-evaluated and decided to get the wires,a timing belt/water pump kit,the valve cover gasket set and the distributer cap aswell. Costs more money in parts but this hassle looks well worth doing it all at once 😂😂 thank you
this video was very helpful. because now I know if you have a 2002-2005 Mitsubishi Eclipse GT it is basically a royal pain in the ass to change the spark plugs. and in my case I also learned I need a new valve cover gasket. thank you lol
Thank you so much! This helped me tremendously last night! Job complete!! I also changed out the valve cover gaskets while under there!! At first I needed help with plugging the wires into the distributor correctly, but soon noticed the numbers were on the cap. Just had to look up the cylinder order...
it'd suck to spending about 400 dollars on this ! So Diy for less than 200, make sure you have proper tools , metric. few adapters and extension. the worst will be the exhaust pipe . dont belive you need to undo any coolant hoses i didnt , also remove your motor support tower bar gives you more space , everything will only go bk on one way. i do suggest buying quality plugs an wires or oem. buy valve cover gasket kit just incase you find oil in the wells you can always return it unless you wanna do this job again by only wishing you bought it and rtv. i did this on mitsubishi gts v6 no room at all its a bit bigger . this set up here along with the mitsubishi gt are smaller and a bit more room to work . good job. and for ppl who are scared to do this review more and take photos .again it will only go bk on one way . there are no extra bolts when you started so ..lol , putting the plenum back on dont over torque or tighten it bc it will strip . take note on which way the intake gasket sits as well bc if put on backward guess your be doing it again and flipping it or again bc you now made a vacuum leak .buy new wires, dustributor and rotor. its worth it if your down there. if your arms are to big to reach the exhaust pipe in the back and the 4 bolts holding the plenum on you can do the back from underneath up. last tip get a good set long needle nose pliers all my plug wires but one broke off at the rubber grommets at the top so had to dig them out .air compressor blow the wells clean from the rubber pieces than add plugs. this motor set up is the devil , may the Lord be with you 😂😂
I finally did this job. Replaced the spark plugs, wires, and the valve cover gaskets. Started it up, and the car just sounds a lot different than it did before it. Idk if it's just because I replaced everything, or it's misfiring.
Really easy job to do.....really similar/common procedure for almost ALL v6 front wheel drive vehicles. Alot of people are intimidated by this type of job, but it's actually simple. You CANT replace an electrical connector in the wrong location. You CANT replace hoses where they dont belong. All the bolts are of the same grade, you just gotta pay attention to the bolt length.........................Im watching this video to get an idea of what tools I need to pack up before I replace valve cover gaskets.
Well....got the intake manifold off the car.....removed the valve cover gaskets and spark plugs......just got back from the Autozone with all the replacement parts.
I didn/t use a ratchet on any of the nuts/bolts. I used a cordless impact on most everything and a 15 degreea angled ratcheting wrench on those back bolts for the EGR tube flange..........took approximately 30 minutes to get everything apart.................oh, and the reason I was able to use a ratcheting wrench on the back of the intake manifold is because I remover the factory strut tower brace..........doing this opened up so much room.
yea its best to have another car before working on these peace of craps yourself lol i got 98 Sebring im finally going to work on after sitting for 5 years now i have my Toyota as my every day car and time to learn and mess up lol

I'm not a shop tho I do mobile mechanic so I gotta be cheaper. Good video tho. U could leave the egr alone if your just doing plugs and just reach under there and change them. Less to tske off

wow this pretty much the only good video about this engine. .thanks I'm about to do that I wish you could show how to replace the cover gasket. .do I have to put like a seal bond ..or just the gasket itself. .thanks again
Douglas lopez just the gasket. I'm doing both as we speak. Got the front done and the manifold almost off today besides the back 5 bolts. Pain in ass jus take tour time so your don't break anything and u no we're goes were putting back together but really it's easy there all didfrent plugs and bolts thst can only fit to one thing so not bad
So basically, disconnect battery cable. And remove everything connecting to the intake manifold. Vac hoses, electrical wires, ect. And to install just reverse it. If I were you I would replace the valve cover gaskets for good measure.
Its hard to find videos about the eclipse, thanks for taking the time to put this together, super helpful! Wish me luck this weekend ! Although, from what I understand, for an Mitsubishi Eclipse cylinders 1,3,5 are in the front correct ? 2,4,6 are in the back? This video of the Chrysler shows it opposite
Great Video. But, after watching this I will never own a V6. I have 01 eclipse, and I would rather pay some one $100 some dollars to do it for me. Its way to complex for average car enthusiast to do it by themselves. At the same time I am afraid, with so many thing to loosen, taking off, even a good mechanic can forget to put everything back on especially when they are on tight schedule. Damn!!!! Again hats off to you for showing and doing it. Thanks
hey I have a 2003 eclipse with the same engine and after doing tune up I'm now having problems with the car starting can't figure out what it is exactly and am curious to figuring out what the problem is

And there I was all excited on changing my spark plugs on my 02 Spyder GT, but after watching this video I might just spend those $100 dollars on a tune up to a qualified mechanic. LOL
You are either getting too much air (vacuum leak) or too little fuel (restriction in fuel line). Check live data on an OBD2 to see your short term fuel trims. Also, I've had random misfires caused by an EGR valve stuck open. Make sure it is opening and closing normally.
Very good video. I've done the tune up job twice, and now I have Cylinder 1 misfiring trouble. Also, I appreciate any comments, experiences on the best way to replace valve gaskets. Hey, thanks so much for this video production. I would like to know what kind of mileage you would say such motor would provide on a Pajero/Montero in an urban context. Could you? I would like very much to see a video of this quality covering the possible adjustments for the lowest consumption possible with engine like this on a Montero 2000 e.g.. Also, do you have any thoughts or knowledge on an engine like this running on HH2? Thank you.
Wow, what a job. How much did all that cost your customer? Trying to decide if I want to tackle this in my daughters mits. Did you have to drain the coolant since you took off some of the upper hoses, or would those have drained back to the radiator? Lots of good info on your video, thanks.
Kevin Kimey On this one I did the timing belt and water pump as well, so I did drain the coolant. Depends on how much of a mess you want to make. there should be a small drain plug on the bottom of the radiator, maybe drain out 1/2 a gallon or so, that will help with less spilling when taking off the hose(s).
I got all the bolts out of the intake like your video shows. How hard is it to pull the intake after that. It still seems it is seized. Did you have to pry it off?
I have a Chrysler sebring to , mine has the 2.5 l v6 engine in it. So im guessing theres not much difference between the 3.0 and the 2.5. besides maybe some power differences.
Engines are identical (part of the Mitsubishi 6g series) minus a few exterior components and the bore. In fact if your 2.5 goes you can upgrade it to a 3.0 or even a 3.5 from a Diamante. I got a '00 Stratus with the 2.5 that has 204k miles that I might do this to soon since you can get low mileage engines for cheap.
I have been dealing with this for about a year and a couple months now got to get it fixed does the egr sensor have to get changed when doing this job and is it as easy as you make it look
By any chance do you have a video or can give any pointers on how to remove/replace the alternator for this motor? I have a 2003 Eclipse with the same motor and think the alternator is going bad. Constantly reading around 11.-11.6 volts but every now and then will jump to the 13.3-13.6 for a few seconds to minutes then back down to the 11 volt range. My battery is only a year old. Just started doing this the other day. So far I have been able to drive it but would like to fix this asap. thanks for any help
Xtremevette I do not think I do, I do not know how much searching you did for it on YT. When searching I would be sure to put the engine size in there, also a tip is to find out what other cars have that same basic setup. I would search wikipedia for your car, often on the right side they will list similar or related cars, and with a little research you can find out what other vehicles that engine goes in. Hope this helps some, sorry I don't have more.
Fixing cars and stuff hey thanks so much for this video my rear valve cover gasket is pissing oil and burning off on my exhaust what type of specific wrench and sockets were used if you don't mind me asking .
JB I did that job myself from a video on here. Thermostat was fairly cheap from my local.parts store. You will have to replace coolant though. My thermostat wasn't opening all the way causing my fans to run constantly.
oh man i didnt know it was difficult to do a tune up lol..... I need help with a Mitsubishi Eclipse 2001 3.0 V6 GT. I think it needs a torque converter solenoid but im not sure. Can you help?
Once you get the intake manifold off, you need to unscrew all bolts holding down the valve covers for both sides of the V6. Once it cover is off the gaskets for the spark plug tubes and valve cover itself can be pulled off. Practice with the front valve cover first since it is more accessible. The other is harder to get to, but once you know what you're doing it isn't too bad.
Hey, Pulled the intake manifold today. Couldn't have done it without your video. That back bracket bolt by the exhaust is a pita. Need a swivel ratchet to get it and still not easy. Since it's off I am going to replace the valve cover gasket too. Now that I can see the air intake it is filthy. Can I clean it with some throttle and intake cleaner? Thanks!
+spaceheadpdub it's a must...the wires degrade over time...use NGK Iridium plugs and their blue wires...they have lasted for 100,000 miles so far...car still runs awesome, saves fuel...gonna do spark plug+wires+distributor cap+distributor rotor change at 150,000 miles...I'm at 141,000...this engine is very reliable in NA form.
@@RCsFinest wow, I'm at 181,000.had some more problems. fuel pump finally died, oil pump seal went as well and leaked oil into the AC compressor, crank sensor and harmonic balancer. replaced oil pump and seal, balancer and crank sensor & new fuel pump. bought a new AC compressor (Not remanufactured) and have yet to install it. gonna buy AC condenser too before summer.Thank God parts are cheap for this car from rock Auto.
I just did this job on my 01 eclipse and after I put it back together the engine turns over and runs really rough. The exhaust just sounds really throaty, more throaty than before. At idle its under 1000 rpm and seems to want to turn off but it hangs in there. Any ideas on what it might be?
I did this job today on my 01 Mitsubishi eclipse spider,Got it all back together and now it sounds like something is hitting somewhere.Any ideas what would be causing it ?? I pulled it back apart to check if the pistons were hitting the plugs and they had little dents on them ? I reinstalled the old ones and it is doing the same thing. It did not do it before. Any ideas ?????? I am stumped..
Did you have the intake holes covered the whole, time? Wondering if something fell down into one of the holes? Unfortunately you may need to take it apart again and look down in the holes with a good flashlight to look for anything obvious. could it be some kind of belt noise? Best of luck. Those little dents could just be indentations for the edges of the valves built into the pistons, may not be an issue. Any plug gaps messed up?
I checked all the intake holes with a flashlight there wasn't anything in them.. None of the gaps were messed up just those little dents on the plugs.everything was fine there wasn't any ticking or noises at all..
KiiNg. MErkiin Make sure all your connectors for sensors are plugged back in, you could have a vacuum leak too, hose not connected, gasket messed up....
In this video further evidence engineers hate technicians. Bahhaha, wtf were they thinking. Remove the intake manifold to pull plugs. Man, glad I saw this now, about to tackle valve cover gasket due to oil leak from the rear of the engine somewhere up high (hoping its just valve cover, will see soon), might as well do plugs and wires while I'm there. Might even make a weekend of it and do timing belt, tensioner and water pump. It was over due when I bought it. Thanks for the video, very helpful.
welp changing out the pluggs in my g3 eclipse today..cant wait nott!who designed that crap..dont get me wrong i love black betty but the makers hate drivers...n im guessing they never will have to change theirs ever
I have a gs and a gts ...Your gs I can fix it with a blindfold lol but the gts is insane, anyways I'm sure yours dies from a air leak ... if u tell me what has been done to it lately I can give u a correct answer
I have a 2000 mitsubishi galant v6 with the same engine as the one shown here in the video my egr is bad and my car still leaks oil my battery occasionally dies because i dont drive it i dont want to blow the motor
when I bought mine in feb it needed a timing belt so I put a timing belt on it and it needed a cam sensor as well so I replaced that and then It sounded like an intake leak cause it would die after about 5 seconds . do the 4 cyl intakes crack easily over the years ?

No se hablar inglés me gusta el video yo tengo un eclipse 2000 3.0l pare como este quisiera cambiar las bujillas ya que nunca se lo he cambiado
I love you man! This helped out alot lol
ok so what's the wire diagram
I have a Chrysler sebring to , mine has the 2.5 l v6 engine in it. So im guessing theres not much difference between the 3.0 and the 2.5. besides maybe some power differences.
Engines are identical (part of the Mitsubishi 6g series) minus a few exterior components and the bore. In fact if your 2.5 goes you can upgrade it to a 3.0 or even a 3.5 from a Diamante. I got a '00 Stratus with the 2.5 that has 204k miles that I might do this to soon since you can get low mileage engines for cheap.
how many bolts in the back of the manifold on a gts eclipse
I have been dealing with this for about a year and a couple months now got to get it fixed does the egr sensor have to get changed when doing this job and is it as easy as you make it look
tengo un problema con los sensores TPS y VSS cono los puedo remplazar es un galant 2003 v6 3.0 24
Fixing cars and stuff hey thanks so much for this video my rear valve cover gasket is pissing oil and burning off on my exhaust what type of specific wrench and sockets were used if you don't mind me asking .
whats the average price to change the thermostat on this engine?
JB I did that job myself from a video on here. Thermostat was fairly cheap from my local.parts store. You will have to replace coolant though. My thermostat wasn't opening all the way causing my fans to run constantly.
selling a 2003 gts......needs tune up. why does Mitsubishi hate the drivers? the guy who put this together the way he did needs a tune up
what spark plugs should I use
my intake is stuck and won't come off and all the bolts are out need help asap
oh man i didnt know it was difficult to do a tune up lol..... I need help with a Mitsubishi Eclipse 2001 3.0 V6 GT. I think it needs a torque converter solenoid but im not sure. Can you help?
Does it die after coming to a stop?
Wow, what a colossal pain in the ass... Thanks for the video though I think I will be referring back to it a lot.
My question is how to replace the spark plug gaskets in the valve cover. Any suggestions? Thanks
You get it?
Once you get the intake manifold off, you need to unscrew all bolts holding down the valve covers for both sides of the V6. Once it cover is off the gaskets for the spark plug tubes and valve cover itself can be pulled off. Practice with the front valve cover first since it is more accessible. The other is harder to get to, but once you know what you're doing it isn't too bad.
thank you so much. awesome job
what's the best plugs for this? or what plug did you used on this?
champion double platinum
What is the thing you have in your hand at 6 min and 16 seconds
VAPOR CANISTER PURGE CONTROL VALVE (MD367541)
How much should this job cost to replace all spark plugs and replace both valve cover gaskets?
Robert Maneri 250$, depending on location
Hey, Pulled the intake manifold today. Couldn't have done it without your video. That back bracket bolt by the exhaust is a pita. Need a swivel ratchet to get it and still not easy. Since it's off I am going to replace the valve cover gasket too. Now that I can see the air intake it is filthy. Can I clean it with some throttle and intake cleaner? Thanks!
Kevin Kimey Yes a good time to clean what you can with brake cleaner or carb. cleaner.
I can't get my damn valve cover of. NOTHING is connected to it. Do I have to take the timing cover off??
also when replacing spark plugs do u need new wires as well
+spaceheadpdub it's a must...the wires degrade over time...use NGK Iridium plugs and their blue wires...they have lasted for 100,000 miles so far...car still runs awesome, saves fuel...gonna do spark plug+wires+distributor cap+distributor rotor change at 150,000 miles...I'm at 141,000...this engine is very reliable in NA form.
@@DenisDamulira23 I'm at 280k right now and I need the works 😁
@@RCsFinest wow, I'm at 181,000.had some more problems. fuel pump finally died, oil pump seal went as well and leaked oil into the AC compressor, crank sensor and harmonic balancer. replaced oil pump and seal, balancer and crank sensor & new fuel pump. bought a new AC compressor (Not remanufactured) and have yet to install it. gonna buy AC condenser too before summer.Thank God parts are cheap for this car from rock Auto.
@@DenisDamulira23 generally speaking do the distributor rotors go bad or the distributor in general?
@@RCsFinest the rotors first always...but if you get a cam sensor code, then that's inside the distributor and the whole thing needs to be replaced.
What is the firing order of the spark plugs?
1 3 2 4 from timing belt side of motor
I just did this job on my 01 eclipse and after I put it back together the engine turns over and runs really rough. The exhaust just sounds really throaty, more throaty than before. At idle its under 1000 rpm and seems to want to turn off but it hangs in there. Any ideas on what it might be?
MrYummytacos maybe check your egr connection? I think the back passenger side... vacuum leak when you put intake back on...
same shit happened to me!!! if any one can help please call me at 9168414582!!! please!!!
Julio Arias What did you do wrong when you changed the park plus on your 3g eclipse
Julio Arias Im doing mine this week
None of the gaps were messed up just those little dents on the plugs.everything was fine there wasn't any ticking or noises at all..
june88bug420 If you put it all together and it is still making a noise, maybe you could post it on YT and we the people can try to help out?
Ok yes i will do it tomorrow thank you...
why did i buy a 2001 Mitsubishi eclipse gt with the 3.0L v6 engine option on it my life sucks lol
gcm gas How is the Eclipse?? I am 20 and just bought my first car which happens to be the 3rd gen Eclipse v6 ... This engine crap is confusing me lol!
Kevin Dee once you do it a few times, it will become easier
Great video
I replaced the plugs and the value cover. Now I'm having smoke from the back of the block..help
leaky valve cover gasket.
So you drain coolant before starting the job?
Ben Penaloza You don’t have too, but if you haven’t changed it now would be a good time.
Did the spark plugs on my sebring 04 3.0 but wont stay on itll die back down
KiiNg. MErkiin Make sure all your connectors for sensors are plugged back in, you could have a vacuum leak too, hose not connected, gasket messed up....
KiiNg. MErkiin I Only Unplugged The Mass Air Flow And Mine Acts The Same Way Now
Anyone on here familiar with the firing order and which plug goes to wish spot on the distributor? Every Diagram I can find is wrong.
Thanks for the video, very helpful.
do i have to have the battery disconnected to change the spark plugs?
EclipseGuy97 yes or else it'll get in the way
You needs to remove the battery, battery tray and many other things out of the Car.
You did all this work and installed Autolite spark plugs ??
NGK Iridiums are oem for this engine.
+Rod S. autolite have iridium+platnum too,same thing,design lol
great job boss
I have a 01 stratus R/T 3.0 there aint no way im doin that myself.
welp changing out the pluggs in my g3 eclipse today..cant wait nott!who designed that crap..dont get me wrong i love black betty but the makers hate drivers...n im guessing they never will have to change theirs ever
i have a 2000 eclipse gs and it starts and then dies after like 5 secs what do you think is causing this?
get a new battery a new alternator and replace the egr valve and make sure you don't have a gasket leak
It sputters as well i replaced the valve cover gaskets but i need to replace all the gaskets to the motor
when I bought mine in feb it needed a timing belt so I put a timing belt on it and it needed a cam sensor as well so I replaced that and then It sounded like an intake leak cause it would die after about 5 seconds . do the 4 cyl intakes crack easily over the years ?
Galant and 6g72 should be keywords... thanks yo
