Destiny 2: Datto's Thoughts on the Scourge of the Past Raid

- Scourge of the Past has been picked apart and utterly destroyed by the community at this point. Here's how I felt about the raid as a whole. Doing a lot of catch up with Black Armory now that I've had some time to actually make videos.

I like how the final boss for the first time in Destiny's Raiding history is very activly moving and going after people. I don't count the Templar's teleports as movement specially when you can suppress that. Its nice to see some actual improvements here with the design. A super mech controlled by a Servitor. It couldn't get any more anime than that. I also respect the implementation of sparrows in the raid. In the past, those were gimmicks and self made challenges to pull on through an entire raid, but this time they actually have some proper value to them and are part of the raid experience.
I would call Scourge of the Past an easier, short, fun raid. Its not going to satisfy people that seek a challenge, but I'm sure the more casual audience or those with limited time will appreciate this piece here a lot. I hope future raids incorporate more such things as mobile bosses, vehicles that we can use against the enemey and sparrows.
It is one of the easier raids. Great for showing someone who's new to raids similar to Eater of Worlds.
It is one of the easier raids. Great for showing someone who's new to raids similar to Eater of Worlds.
Remember Bungie saying during the LW raid-a-long that they had to make the raid bosses always die in the same spot. I’m certainly glad that they somehow manage to fix that and enable a boss with damage phases in different locations.
@@intheairex That was specific to Riven because her body is a part of the map after she dies
Exept the “casual” community still can’t play raids because of no matchmaking and lack of “I have 5 experienced destiny freinds to play for hours with me right now”
Scourge felt a lot like Argos. Getting to the boss is easy, just some simple padding, then a very well done boss fight.
Alex Davis I mean I don’t really get that I kinda felt like everything was easy I had all 3 characters done in just about 6 hours and honestly the hardest encounter when on my lowest character was the first one. Just my personal thoughts on the matter. I believe that my team first tried the final boss on our lowest characters
who's Argos?
simbionte de la luz Argos is the first raid lair boss from eator of worlds
@@frasergriffiths1151 oh, the giant scorpion.
Ehh I think this qualifies a bit more than just padding
My opinion
I want to see the kill counter on datto's go figure.
It’s literally the only primary he uses in every video, it’s wild. Probably is pretty far over 10,000 by now lol
Mad Daug it’s like about 40K
Vantave Waaayy over that. I remember seeing it at like 35k at one point
Last time I saw him stream, it was about what @CallMeFLG said, 30 - 35k. That thing kills more than Cigarettes.
Vantave when he cleared last wish the counter was at 3500 but that was from playing 24 hours straight
I don't even play destiny anymore, I just want to listen to Datto's thoughts
do you know what hes talking about?
Same. But I have a general idea of all of these things. I am not interested in coming back personally. But as always we support Mr. Datto
I stopped playing in D1 lol. Datto is my proxy into the Destiny community

Scourge of the Past is my favourite raid. Love the sparrow section, final boss, and it's the perfect length
I feel like bungie could have done more with black armory than just make it a Forge grind. I like the idea of the weapon frames and the whole “sacred” weapons story. The raid needed to have more content for the average PVE player to enjoy. *This is my opinion*
Thanos And I'm disappointed they just made the raid aeapons Forge weapons locked behind the raid. They should've added all the weapons to the Forges and had entirely unique weapons for the raid. As it is, jyst makes the main content feel even more pallid than it already does.
Bungie didn’t make this
@@Theosyion Bungie approved it though.
Raids aren’t necessarily meant for the average PVE player

thought this was a slayer podcast but this is just fine. loving the recent content datto!
That Dreg at 5:09 LUL great video Datto!
Hey! I'm wondering if you're planning on doing a mod guide like you did with the perks on weapons and armor. Those vids were really great to understand a bit about the rolls n stuff. Great content, keep it up!
Love these vids and hope you talk to slayer about Last Wish and Scourge like yall did for Wrath, KF, and Leviathan
The discussion at the end about power levels affecting raids feels surprisingly prophetic after what Bungie did about that for Crown of Sorrows.
Datto keep up the content, we all love you!
I think it’s a ton of fun, and one of my favorite raids
It’s a nice, short, kinda simple raid with good roles for every one in the group and with a focus on movement that we haven’t seen since WotM
I do agree it would have been much better with even 1 more encounter, but like you said it does a good job of teaching mechanics as the raid goes on
Plus it has some great loot
I think they should cap power before the raid is completed (or maybe until 24 hours after raid launch). I'd argue it'd make the raid more accessible. It would mean players that are committed but can't grind full-time in the lead up to the raid are as capable at giving the raid a try as those that do.
I haven't got to do any raids yet but have just about everything else completed. I hope to be able to get midnight coup soon!
I think we should have the heavy raids(king's fall and last wish) and also have the light raids(crota's end and scourge)
I think in the Insurrection Prime to open the map top team would have to look at the map and kill a Berserker and putting it in the map area. And the damage phase could be extended by doing that as well
Actually a good idea. Perhaps doing so could auto destroy a panel in phase 2 as well?
I agree, it needed at least one more encounter just feels too short.
Hey good that they totally added something like what Datto was saying about a World’s First power cap with the Contest modifier.
Now with the first 24 hours of a raid, no matter how high your level actually is, it will be effectively capped off at a certain point for each encounter so that it can’t be too easy because you’re over-leveled. It doesn’t effect people not going for a Day 1 completion and makes it pretty fair for everybody competing. Now it’s basically all about what gear you use and what strats you figure out.
I like the idea of capping power at a certain point for the world's first completion, but when you are in the raid the drops there would boost you higher. This allows you to progress that little bit more before reaching the final encounter. Once upon completion, just like Last Wish where it unlocked a bunch of content, it unlocks the power level like you said for everyone to enjoy boosting.
I like to randomly come back to videos and hear what ideas Datto just says, cuz then it makes me wonder if he just secretly worms for Bungie. Literally came up with the basis for contest mode casually towards the end of this video XD.
Surprised you didn't mention SotP's loot table being shared with the forge weapons. That was my main complaint. Outside of Threat Level's curated roll the forge frames are generally better. And they didn't add more enhanced perks (half the weapons still don't have enhanced versions) to the loot table so it's not like there's a reason to grind for armor like I did in LW.
With how they did the final boss, I hope this opens the door to all new possibilities for to how they go about making the encounters. Having a roaming boss is actually one of coolest things they've ever done. I thought riven poking her head in and out of the rooms in Last Wish was cool but how Insurrection Prime roams the area...
5:11 *Dreg:* "PSYCH!"
I'm happy with it, I got No Feelings with steady rounds, stability masterwork, outlaw and box breathing on my 2nd run...
SotP feels very much like Spire of Stars for me - that sort of lair scope. I wouldn't say no to an extra encounter, but I'm happy with what I got, especially because the last encounter really is enjoyable to look at \o/
Datto, can you please discuss the state of Trials of the Nine? I really wish they would bring it back, but with 3v3 and 4v4 modes. I think Trials has just been forgotten at this point.
I don't want anything too hard for a raid. I like it the way it is. A forgiving timer is nice to have for players who are slower than others. Not everyone is a perfect destiny player with over a 1000 hours and wanting everything to be hardcore. That's what lead to that ridiculously hard puzzle thing that everyone got mad about in the first place. Don't want anymore complicated things.
That puzzle was hard because they didnt release the last clue, literally nothing anyone did, aside from random combinations, was going to solve it.
It was a broken puzzle, not too hard.
the puzzle was never tested before, that's bungie's fault
I think Bungie said they were looking into bounties that were gained during a previous LL cap like Iron Banner bounties would be capped at whatever LL the cap was at the time. So if you had bounties saved up from this seasons IB and you opened them when the LL was upped to 700 then you would only get 650 gear from them. But I do really like the idea of making a hard cap on light before a raid drops then increasing afterwards.
I love datto predicting contest mode
Just finished SoTP and I agree. You don’t do anything basically if you’re the outside team. I like the CAP mechanic tho. Other than the boss, the sparrow section is by far the best part
You got to fight a Gundam which is literally dope!
Quick question, why the Go Figure over something like a hand cannon w/ outlaw rampage (KO, MC, NoB), or a breakneck w/ rampage mod? Just genuinely curious, because I have above mentioned weapons and the exact same GF roll.
I loved the sparrow racing part
The Taken King dlc had a power cap that was increased once the raid came out. And was then increased again once hard mode came out. We need to go back to that
I enjoyed it as a person who works all week but was able to still complete the raid week one and by the jacket.
Great video as ususal Datto.... I was surprised this raid was so short I thought it was going to be longer with one or two more encounters... but at least the loot is cool. Last Wish and Scourge of the past loot is fantastic looking. Still cant get that outlaw kill clip combo on ANYTHING (except rocket launchers).... fml.
Scourge of the Past is definitely a fun raid. Even though I have only done it once, I thoroughly enjoyed it (except the Sparrow section, I sucked at that). It isn't my favorite raid though, that honor goes to Wrath of the Machine. I just liked the balance of action and mechanics in that one. Spire of Stars comes second with probably Scourge as third.
I enjoyed your thoughts video on this Datto. I look forward to more on this.
(Side note: What would you say is your top 5 when it comes to Destiny raids? Mildly curious.)
I think it is a good idea to have people go in the raid at a lower light BUT it shouldn’t stop the progress of leveling.
It should be like the nightfall almost where when you load in it automatically puts you at the ideal light to do the raid.
I actually appreciate the challenge mode for the first phase of the boss, because it lets everyone be a part of each team, rather than just be stuck on servitor duty, or just be stuck running in circles the entire time
I'm surprised they haven't attempted to implement a curated/normalized first week raid experience yet, where encounter levels were static a la Gambit, so you can't over level. Keep this in place until first completion, then roll out the standard levels-enabled version on the following Tues reset. Could alleviate the ability to overlevel, on paper anyway.
Bungie sees this
*Inserts Contest modifier
What if the day 1 raid cap would work like the nightfall cap. As soon as you launch the activity it will cap you. This wouldnt cap anyone outside of the raid meaning they can carry on leveling up
9:45 We eagerly await 👀
Hey datto I've been looking for a forsaken super damage comparison and can't find a good vid so I was hoping you could make one Mr.optimal dps
Wow. Destiny New Light player here. I had no idea this raid even existed. No one talks about it. I hear all about the Calus and Riven raids and also the new Vex one with Shadowkeep. Had no idea this was a thing.
Destiny 2 i love this game i love the lore and the story behind every scanable from d1 Ryzal Azzir, Dregen Yor, Shin Malphur, Ulan Tan, Wei Ning, Ariana-3, and Andal Brask so much thought was put into each and every character........
Me:Still doesnt play Raids even at Light Level 619....
datto how do you feel about bungo getting rid of hard/prestige modes?
Absolutely agree with the point about erasing everyone's powerful rewards when a new season starts, or instead, upon completion of the challenge that rewards the powerful reward, it automatically turns it in so people can't stack them
Enjoyed having a raid in a new content drop regardless of how good or bad it was. I disagree with locking power level because you are basically telling majority of the player base to not bother playing the game or getting powerful drops the raid drop week until someone beats the raid.
The only problem with wiping the powerful bounties from previous seasons is that ones i hit max level there wont be anything for me to do after i hit max level thats usually 1 month into the expansion, like ive doing all the powerful bounties for next season on all my characters that has kept me playing i already got everything done in the game, got the tittle i wanted, the rolls for the weapons i desired and all exotics so just these little grind for next season is what keeps me in Destiny
Instead of locking EVERYONE at a lower Powerlevel just so that a very few people that want to do "worlds first" have a more "competitive" experience, how about just locking the Raid itself at that lower powerlevel until it's beaten for the first time?
What I mean is for example this: 650 was the max you could get, let's say for the worlds first race the raid itself is locked at 625. Now everyone that enters the raid has their Powerlevel capped at 625 and weapons and gear that are above that level get lowered for the duration of the raid (until one team achieved worlds first).
That is in my opinion the best solution. It doesn't stop people that are not interested in worlds first from powerleveling and having to wait for the raidteams to complete worlds first and it still would result in the more competitive race for worlds first for those that want it.
Streamers would whine that they are having their time wasted since they may be over
Niall487 what
@@Niall487 in the scenario you're responding to, you couldn't be overleveled, because you'd get scaled down?
@Niall487 Why would they? In this scenario I proposed everyone that does the Raid would be at the same level even if outside the raid they are "overlevled" because it would be downscaled to the same level for everyone during the raid activity. So equal chance for everyone.
So Streamers would have the exact same chance as everyone else, don't see how this would be "time wasted". If they can't particiapte in a worlds first race where everyone has an equal chance then they shouldn't in the first place since that would mean they only rely on their powerlevel and nothing else.
@@Doughpalace im saying there normal level might be above, so they would whine that they have had there time wasted
There should be a fight in Destiny where it's just a massive vehicle fight. It would be really cool to have a fight where the mechanics are based on using different vehicles like pikes, tanks, and interceptors to do certain things
Why do you use the tempered dynamo fusion rifle rather than a shotgun or other alternative?
Because he can.
I want to know what the duke roll was, that he got an the 3rd encounter
Funny, everything you don't like is what appeals to me. I'm not real great at destiny, but I like playing it. I have a hard time raiding because I don't want to waste 5 other people's time because I'm not able to pull my weight. I absolutely detest that everything is on a timer now. I can't even try to be careful so I don't die because there isn't time to be careful.
I've actually enjoyed scourge (even though I've yet to complete it) because I can actually play a role that really contributes.
Im glad the first part of the boss fight has the "boring" upstairs part. I just wish the jerk would quit running down the alley so I can finally clear it.
TLDR; people like me that aren't destiny gods like to raid too. It's hard enough to find someone to raid with, but impossible if raids continue to be made "more challenging" for the uber elite, and therefore seemingly impossible for the mere mortals.
If you're on Xbox and need an extra person, I can be available
What console r u on?
inb4 people dunk on you for daring to not dedicate thousands of hours to the game. "Rabble! Casualz like you are why we got Vanilla D2 so bad at launch!"
@@doug2731 lol. I have 1480 hours in d1 and 2634 in d2. I'm not sure why d1 is so much lower. I did delete two characters, so maybe all the time I sunk into those weren't away. In any case, it isn't for lack of time. I'm 54. My reflexes aren't what they used to be.
It the new raid hard as hell or just easy?
Scourge of Crotas End.
Pretty decent if you like ball skating.
That was a fun strike
I like this raid purely for the variety it provides. Having both this and Last Wish active and relevant provides significantly different experiences and I think they pulled that off really well.
When is datto’s thoughts on Niobe labs coming up?
Hey bro, you have a podcast? Where can I find it?
Datto didn’t even want to get that extra 8 seconds. What a gentlemen
As a person who really struggles with communication could I do this raid? Last wish let me get off with only talking during Queens walk
I did my first SotP run a few days ago. It was...interesting; I got an exotic drop from a teammate killing adds before we even started the Raid (Geomags, yay), then proceeded to get two sets of gloves and two of the same fusion rifle :/
I understand why you compare it to WotM, but I feel like SotP is much more of a direct analog to Spire of Stars. Not so much in the mechanics themselves, as those are very different, but in the pacing and types of encounters we see. It's almost 1:1.
Intro section so that we can fall down a hole
SoS- charge the balls and throw them in
SotP- kill enemy, get balls, dunk them
Both then -> loot chest
Run through underground sections
SoS- more linear than SotP, just atmospheric
SotP- maze-like, find the right path
Platforming segment
SoS- heavily platforming, moving platforms, unlocking new segments, secret exotic chest
SotP- Sparrow platforming, time trial, able to wipe
Both then -> unlock chest by completing extras in the platforming
Initial boss phase to show you the layout and teach you a few mechanics
SoS- shows you the platforms and doors
SotP - teaches the CAP buffs
Both then -> call in/unlock the boss, loot chest
Actual boss segment
SoS- same as previous but more of everything. New mechanics for team wipe phase and damage phase taught by the intro segment
SotP- uses the same mechanics as the intro segment, plus the CAP buffs taught by the previous segment.
Both then -> final loot chest
what you thoughts about last wish? dont see you make video about that
I wish Bungie added a boss fight against the giant flaming servitor of death after the sparrow section.
I think it would've been cool if they put the niobe labs secret in the raid and it
A) unlocked another/alternative boss encounter
B) would've been part of getting the new raid exotic
I’m loving this scurgge of the past
I see you’re going for that Jez optimal upload schedule
Jez is a joke. His reliance on MEMES is quite ridiculous.
Yea there’s a glitch in the under ground pay where the outside team don’t need to kill the servitor and the underground team hits there shape and waits 20-30 seconds and just melees the box until everyone gets there second one then outside team kills servitor people go to tanks. I don’t really know why people do it cause it takes the same amount of time either way it’s done as long as ur team is good.
Yes! 100% I'm I'm down for that!
8:30 love the idea maybe after each competition you get a better chances for those damn cosmetics lol
I really like both Last Wish and Scourge of the Past raids. I like Scourge of the Past more sometimes cause you don’t need as much time to complete it so it’s a little easier to find people for it over Last Wish though now Last Wish a lot of people have beaten so good groups can beat it in 45 minutes easy. I was with a great groups for Scourge of the Past and we beat it in 29 minutes and we were an random group who got together from lfg sites.

Honestly, I'm okay with the lack of engagement in the first boss phase, if you're a sherpa, or want to help a friend putting them on the ads role will help them and you out immensely, and gets the job done for that encounter, boring for the experienced? Yes, but I only have 2 completions, so, what do I know.
wow, first raid/lair i have had zero things to do with, and haven*t tackled within a week... haven't even watched a video, at the point where i'm not sure i wanna watch this video. datto has great content.
Here’s me still waiting for last wish thoughts
Which pulse rifle and fusion rifle are those?
For me Scourge of the Past is the best example of a raid.
Wouldn't mind prestige option with more challenging mechanics though.
We went in on day one with nobody over 640. It took us a little over 9 hours and we were placed 299 on the day one leaderboard.
It was my first day one experience and I think it was fun and challenging overall.
I guess those streamer teams all over 640 on day one will never know how it felt to be 2 shoted by the sniper in the final boss fight. XD
I loved SotP, it was extremely similar to WotM (my favorite). It felt just the right amount of time to me, but I’m stupid so yeah.
"We were much closer to raid power level" - very little amount of people actually were tho. Our raid team went in firs time later in the launch week and decided to try again a week later as everything one-shot us pretty much.
what fusion is he using I need to know
I believe the raid fusion, tempered dynamo
What is that fusion rifle Datto's using?
Personally I think the raid is kinda cool. It try’s new things, and changes the way raids usually go. This reminds me more of a Destiny raid rather than a destiny 2 raid. Also the music at the start of the first encounter is really good
I just wish they refined the first and third encounter a little, right now they feel a little too unstructured. Maybe add some kind of objective for non-relic players to do so it doesnt feel like mindless add slaying.
Sparrow race and the final boss are awesome, I love them, nothing to change.
What pulse rifle is datto using?
Really glad you brought up the whole 'Power Level being a factor for Day One raiding' topic. While I think it's a bit or an arbitrary way to increase the difficulty of the raid, I believe it's a necessary mechanic, especially for day one raiding.
How about an in-raid max power level before the first completion. For example if someone is 645 on a 650 raid but the power cap is 625, then the player’s power level is set to 625 during the raid until worlds first? This way, you don’t have to change the cap of the entire population just for a raid
5:18 I honestly don't agree with you there simply because whisper of the worm is one of the only reasons people are able to take out his shield effectively. If you instead use all three tanks to take some of his remaining weak points out (which is very difficult but much more fun honestly) it seems like a much better mechanic. It makes DPS stressful sometimes but its worth trying.
Whisper needs to reload from reserves and get 3-6 additional rounds in reserve at base. The "infinite" damage it provides makes other exotics (beside Thunderlord) worthless in damage phases.
I think it's fine. We need both mechanics heavy Raids like Last Wish and action heavy Raids with less mechanics to satisfy people. I remember VoG and WotM being the most popular Raids in D1 and people hating King's Fall because of how mechanics heavy it was.
I miss VoG
King's Fall was just a bad raid in general, the mechanics were not bad but badly designed for the areas in which you had to do them. Golgoroth is one of the worst bosses to ever exist.
I enjoy it, just wish there was more weapons. I feel like this raid only drops armor
Datto just gave bungie the idea to prevent easy leveling when a new season comes out.......love it 😂
