- A CityNews investigation has revealed there have been multiple victims of rental fraud at a single home in Mississauga and police have laid charges against the scammer. Tina Yazdani reports.

One sided documentation requests: tenants are required to provide all sorts of documents, like proof of income, references. Landlord usually doesn't provide anything, no proof that he is the actual owner. Also, landlord does not provide references from previous tenants. Completely one sided against the tenant. No surprise fake landlords can get away with anything.
Thomas Ott because the people who give the kickbacks to corrupt politicians are the landlords not the tenants, so everything is biased in their favour.

That’s a great point. It should be mandated that landlord should also be required to provide necessary documents. Make this a standard.
@@barthalomeowthegreat8470 Indeed, it is brilliant. We rate everything else, so why not landlords...and make them use their real identities, not some cowardly corporation number. I also believe that landlords should be citizens who actually live in the same building where they rent.

Most of the ads on Kijiji, and Craigslist are questionable. You all have to be very careful.
There was one time I respond to a job posting. I got a reply right away that the posting is filled. The email was full of mistakes and very unprofessional. But the posting was still on Kijiji. The next thing I know my information was sold. I got all kind of scam calls, emails and text. The next two weeks another job posting, same description but under a different company. I flaged the posting but Kijiji refused to remove the posting, so I called the cops. All these scammers are using fake job postings to collect personal information.

I was scammed by this same girl. With this same advert. I paid $2000 for the 1st and last month's rent to start July 1st . We signed the lease since May 30th.. She lied about her job , her current house address and unit number, she even created an email address and sent me mortgage documents for that house from a top bank. She sent me her intl passport too. We signed the lease and she gave me the fake story that the tenants won't be moving too, she even drafted a letter from a so-called make-belief lawyer to cover compensations for the delay in my move in date till July 10th (airbnb and storage) . Thank goodness I found out before it was too late. I went there thrice to inspect the house and I pleaded with her consistently not to waste my time if it was a scam. When I finally confronted her, she had no single remorse and I made sure she paid my money back. I pray the law catches up with her. She's a very wicked and heartless young lady.
I was also scammed by the same girl in march. Not at this home, but one in brampton by trinity commons. The process wasnt out of the oridinary and there were no red flags. Peel police have been useless in helping ne get the money back. So I just charged it to the game and moved on.

This is why I refused to deal with direct rentals or landlords, I always go with Rental companies even when there's more paperwork

Never give money unless you have the keys and the contract IN PERSON!! People need to learn their rights ignorance is not bliss.
And check the keys to make sure that they lock the doors.

Except the home owner(original landlord) is not involved in this scam. He is totally unaware of what was happening.

Found many like this, especially from kijiji. It's mostly scams.
Varies from city to city. In the USA the scams are all on Craigslist, for some reason. Loads of them. It got so bad in Vancouver, BC that no one used Kijiji, and yet in Calgary Kijiji is one of the go to sites.
I don’t get scammers, I would respect them more if they sold drugs.. Atleast drug dealers don’t steal..

These types of scams really are messed up. If she had scammed someone without any savings or support system they would have become homeless and struggled to get their footing again. She played with people's futures.

That woman is shameless, people helped her and this is what she did to others.... She could have moved to another city and do the same there.
The real problem is the housing market and even renting is way to expensive. It's the governments fault for letting it get this bad, landlords charge way too much were talking 1200 per month for something very basic in my city of Hamilton. The cost of the living and taxes are super high as well, Canada is done as a country the rich took everything from us and killed this country.
I will check the landlord out on the internet. I will never pay for a place without looking at it first. I want to meet the other tenants living there or talk with them over the phone. I want to see the landlord's I.D. and I want to see the documents that they own or rent the place. I also want our interaction to be on video when I go to meet them and look at the place. You can't be too careful. Thankfully I have a cool roommate/landlord who I've been renting from for five years.

It’s very popular. Happens to innocent rental seekers weekly in all of the gta and Toronto Facebook rental groups and forums. There are different variations of the scam. It’s very common and popular.

The problem is tenants cannot check the landlords out! Everything is one sided. Landlords make us give them information but if tenants ask for landlords id, information they deny us. We are desperate for housing so we have no choice! Landlords need to be checked out! Because this is serious, innocent people can end up on the streets and then homeless because they lost all their money, now have to move their things in storage.

I was scammed on Kijiji to in Pickering, Ontario They wanted me to send first and last through Western Union then they would send me my lease and Keys to my house

I don’t believe the owner. He rented his basement for free to a complete stranger? Then for sure the people who got scammed would visit to get their keys or money back. He never meet any of those people? Then he says he knows of at least five people scammed? How? Sounds like he was part of the scam but let her take the fall. How did she only get one charge when two women are in the video. Did the women have no proof to get her charged?

It’s a private home. Hardly something like this would show up on reviews. The woman most likely only gave her first name when showing the property. What they needed was proof she was the owner like a title.
