- Detroit residents allege they have been conned by individuals renting or selling properties they do not actually own in a “fake landlord” scam. NBC News’ Zinhle Essamuah has the story of a woman who faced eviction from the real property owners after entering a fake rent-to-own lease agreement in 2019.

It's good to see people catch a break in life in situations like this, especially by a stranger that read about it in the paper thousands of miles away.

It happened to me back in 2007 in Las Vegas. I didn't realize that I was "renting" an abandoned home. The real estate agent was part of the scam. I was only at the house for about three weeks. Renting a house is very risky. You have to do a lot of research.
With the housing market going crazy, We about to hear a lot of stories like this one and yours. Real Estate agents are just used car salesmen but in a different mask. lol.
The world needs more people like this good and compassionate man.

Bless Mr. Gumbert! I'm so happy it was in his heart to help. I wish there was a way to combat these scammers. Maybe have every rental need a special apartment license which has to be signed by the owner and lease holder at the county office with everyone needing to provide ID and proof of ownership for the owner.
This is what renters everywhere pay. Yet renters that pay outrageous rent on time never are "given credit" and are denied mortgages! It is a scam too!

@@Papillon_2010 Seemed reduced cost too at 500 bucks a month. Not many renters across this country, or buyers pay that low of an amount. But ya, these scammers are just growing more bold and overwhelming the system.

Not really. He's only fulfilling his legal obligation: fiduciary duty. She ought to sue him actually--because she's the victim of a crime; it's not her fault the purchase deal was originally misrepresented. She shouldn't have to pay for the house again; its not her legally binding responsibility. He has to go after the fake landlord for restitution himself, alonside the police.
I'm glad her outcome was different than the outcome for the woman in Chicago, that this same type of scam happened to. The Alderman & Mexican home owner humiliated her on News camera. So many people wanted her out on the streets. This homeowner is a good person. 👍🏾

This crazy mess has been going on in Detroit for yrs now. I been through it and it destroyed me financially and there was nothing done even with a police report. At least she has a chance to buy the home, I put money into the property on Minock street and was left out in the cold.

I see these fake landlord or homeowner supposedly going to sell or rent on craigslist all the time! If looking on Craigslist do not look into one that has duplicate entries, writing in the photo, and no specific addresses but only a vague location. Be warned!

Always get everything in writing when paying amounts and only deal with the landlord...no one else. I would even check with the city to see who's name is on the deed in the first place and only deal with that person. Written contracts...important. I would have asked to see the deed way before agreeing to a rent to own but that's me ...paranoid. Glad it worked out for her.

I got scammed in 1999 , friend and also homeless, along with his girlfriend paid months rent, partied a full week , Saturday morning door kicked in half, big guy, the owner, apparently he lived across the street, three houses down. Guy and cash gone, middle of night.

So why aren't we going after these people with full force? It shouldn't be the victim's responsibility to get justice. If she's paid for it, the home owner should be just as responsible because it's their property used in a crime, and they clearly didn't check up on their property to focus out who was there and what was going on. Two years and the legal owner never knew? That's ridiculous.

they need to create a website with property owner info so they can get the info they need before entering into a contract with anyone and require a rental license to rent a property this will protect both parties from fake scammers... easy fix

An outrage on all levels. She already bought the house and it's not her fault the deal was misrepresented to her.
Watching news these days makes me feel like I'm trapped in a torture experiment. Like I'm cordoned off and prevented from screaming while painful shocks are continuously inflicted; no way to escape.
