A landlord tried scamming my sister. They were having a deal where the first month was free, then when she moved out they held her deposit because they said she had a month unpaid, and of course the landlord conveniently didn't remember or note it on the lease. Luckily my sister took a picture of the ad and still had it months later when she moved out, otherwise she would have been screwed, just like I'm sure other people were by this guy.
@sprock I know a guy with that last name too. Story goes when the first person in that family came to America, Italians were discriminated against. So they translated the name from Bevilaqua to Drinkwater
NEVER sign a contract without viewing the place at least once or at the very least go for somewhere that has been approved by your university. Here in the UK many universities have their own letting agencies or online portals with verified landlords and letting agents - if a landlord doesn't take care of their properties or tenants they can get struck off the list. You can also check the Land Registry to see who owns the property and Company's House to see who owns the letting agency or the company running a building (also shows you dates and other companies they own or have owned previously).

when I was trying to get an apartment from out of state, Practically everyone I talked to insisted on doing business in person, that is how you know someone is legit. an actual landlord will want to cover their own ass just as much if not more than you want to cover yours.
Saw a similar tactic used from a guy posing as a landlord a couple of years ago. They say it's an apartment but it's a house I found out after searching for the address. Furthermore it's a private residence with no name of the supposed landlord. The final red flags were him mentioning he's out of town and will mail me the keys after he receives my money, on top of that I couldn't see the place before.
• 0:48 - When they say stuff like "do you want more info pls??", that's a pretty big tip-off that they're a scammer, that's exactly how scammers talk _all the time_ . ¬_¬ • 3:36 - He's counting the bathroom as a separate room? 🤨
I was scammed by the title of this video. Makes it sound like it’s some random dude confronting his corrupt landlord or some shit. Either way I enjoyed the video.
I really didn't appreciate the scammy VPN advert in the middle too. Most people don't need a VPN. Period. Every reason they claimed to have one, cheaper online shopping, more safety on public WiFi, is just a lie. You're perfectly safe on public WiFi, your connection is end to end encrypted, and you won't get cheaper prices using a VPN.
They don't always call so how would you know that the ad pic doesn't match the person's voice? When you meet they could say they are co partner of the business. It's easy to see how people fall for it; they said their a landlord and if they have keys what are you not going too believe?

And when I finally told him I dont have one, he told me to fuck off and that I'm a bitch and hung up on me 🤣🤣🤣 this was my first experience with a scammer and it was the funniest thing ever!!!
I always fuck with them. I don't have a car or college loans, so I pretend I'm interested and then when I tell them I don't actually have any of that stuff they get mad.
I gave a crazy story too... I answered the phone to this scammer who was trying to sell me solar panels and he kept asking me things like wether I owned a house wether I had children and stuff like that, I answered with yes to all then when he asked me who my insurance was I said “your mom.” This man straight up said in response “are you lesbian” am I just like “sure.” And hung up. He legit calls me back and says something totally unexpected “will you suck me dick.” I, finding this thing amusing go, “sure” then hang up again. He legit calls me a 3rd time and he goes “when,” then I say “when I block your ass and when you learn to shut the fuck up and have some manners.” Never heard from him again
I came across something similar almost two years ago. Found a house that was supposedly for rent at an almost unbelievable price. I became quickly suspicious of the awfully cheap price, the address was not listed correctly, and there was actually a “FOR SALE” sign in the yard of that house. In the email it said he was “out of town” and to go peek in the windows as he wouldn’t be around to let us in with keys and that if we liked it we could sign the paperwork and send him/her the money. I quickly realized it was a scam, reported the listing immediately, and then contacted the true owners for the property to let them know someone was trying to use their listing to scam people.
Yup, same thing happened to me. I told the realtor...after researching on my own that the house was too good to be true. Kept making excuses to delay meeting up, e-mailed me fake paperwork, etc. When I called them out, they threatened to kill me. I did file a police report and forwarded everything to the police, but of course nothing ever came of it.

Same thing happened to me, thankfully I didn't pay them any money. We went to go visit the property, saw it was for sale and someone else who didn't own the property was trying to list it as a rental.
My GF and I were looking at houses and came across a number of scams like this. A number of reposts with phone numbers changed. One guy met us and acted like he forgot the keys when out of nowhere the real owners showed up. We tried to get the police involved, but they didn't show up after an hour and a half, and unlike TV you can't hold a person for them.
i know a girl who was looking for an apartment and found one being leased by a guy who used the last name "da wei"...and yes, it was a scam as the apartment had been listed with various names and prices attached but all using the same pictures
I used to work in property management and this kind of scam would happen all of the time. When people fell for it, they would contact us and claim we scammed them. Unfortunately, there really isn't a lot that landlords can do to stop this.
@@sagatuppercut2960 It wasn't college students getting scammed... well, at least not like this... the universities scammed them at a much greater level. Wow is that true! Protect yourselves! No one else will! Do not send money to anyone who wants you to do a bank transfer! Do not send gift cards...EVER!
when I was trying to get an apartment from out of state, Practically everyone I talked to insisted on doing business in person, that is how you know someone is legit. an actual landlord will want to cover their own ass just as much if not more than you want to cover yours.

Saw a similar tactic used from a guy posing as a landlord a couple of years ago. They say it's an apartment but it's a house I found out after searching for the address. Furthermore it's a private residence with no name of the supposed landlord. The final red flags were him mentioning he's out of town and will mail me the keys after he receives my money, on top of that I couldn't see the place before.
this is how all those Nigerian princes get their millions of dollars.
Yes, but at least they give it back in a form of lottery for you.
And their guilty conscience is what makes them want to give it back to you... for a small fee of $100, of course. Nothing in life is free, even money!
Hey, you'll be amaze to find many hardworking Nigerians who legitimately earn their livelihood. I am a proud one, stop the generalisation.
• 0:48 - When they say stuff like "do you want more info pls??", that's a pretty big tip-off that they're a scammer, that's exactly how scammers talk _all the time_ . ¬_¬

I agree with both of you
@@Flyboy79 it depends, many online websites don't had encryption

How the scammer thought anyone will fall for this and how people actually fall for this is beyond me.
Believe it or not; some people have.
They don't always call so how would you know that the ad pic doesn't match the person's voice? When you meet they could say they are co partner of the business. It's easy to see how people fall for it; they said their a landlord and if they have keys what are you not going too believe?
@@rebekahfield4083 Well the man can't even spell in English so thats the first red flag. Second is the low price, third is the fact that someone else owns the place, fourth is the price change on the contract. With the second low flag I would stop talking to the guy

I had a scammer the other day saying he was the FBI and my bank accounts were hacked and duplicated but the thing is I haven't started a bank account and he would keep asking for my bank info.
For Sale By Owner has been used by people house-sitting to get a deposit on the house, but it's not for sale.
@@brendabilotti1912 thats because the police dont actually do anything that requires more than driving a few blocks and beating people to a pulp and most of those times they even take hours upon hours to get there they dont hunt for scammers they dont hunt for pedophiles they dont take action in anything that truly desperately requires it
