when I was trying to get an apartment from out of state, Practically everyone I talked to insisted on doing business in person, that is how you know someone is legit. an actual landlord will want to cover their own ass just as much if not more than you want to cover yours.

I have to kinda disagree, my landlord decided when inflation started going up to actually reduce my rent as he likes my wife and myself and wants us to stay in the house rather than finding new tenants but we obviously we already know our landlord and have been renting from him for a few years now. There are some nice landlords but you are right most arent nice.

A landlord tried scamming my sister. They were having a deal where the first month was free, then when she moved out they held her deposit because they said she had a month unpaid, and of course the landlord conveniently didn't remember or note it on the lease. Luckily my sister took a picture of the ad and still had it months later when she moved out, otherwise she would have been screwed, just like I'm sure other people were by this guy.
I would just whisper my special words in his ear and he would just melt away.

NEVER sign a contract without viewing the place at least once or at the very least go for somewhere that has been approved by your university. Here in the UK many universities have their own letting agencies or online portals with verified landlords and letting agents - if a landlord doesn't take care of their properties or tenants they can get struck off the list.
You can also check the Land Registry to see who owns the property and Company's House to see who owns the letting agency or the company running a building (also shows you dates and other companies they own or have owned previously).

Saw a similar tactic used from a guy posing as a landlord a couple of years ago. They say it's an apartment but it's a house I found out after searching for the address. Furthermore it's a private residence with no name of the supposed landlord. The final red flags were him mentioning he's out of town and will mail me the keys after he receives my money, on top of that I couldn't see the place before.

Whew... Thank you! I dodged a bullet when the same dude, Jack Daniel, tried to do the same to me. Luckily, this video helped me realize what was going on. So I instead rented an apartment with a real landlord, Samuel Adams.

I used to work in property management and this kind of scam would happen all of the time. When people fell for it, they would contact us and claim we scammed them. Unfortunately, there really isn't a lot that landlords can do to stop this.

The people who typically got scammed were very desperate like an elderly woman living on SSI, a couple caring for a disabled child, or a destitute mom getting away from her abusive ex.

I really didn't appreciate the scammy VPN advert in the middle too. Most people don't need a VPN. Period. Every reason they claimed to have one, cheaper online shopping, more safety on public WiFi, is just a lie. You're perfectly safe on public WiFi, your connection is end to end encrypted, and you won't get cheaper prices using a VPN.

My GF and I were looking at houses and came across a number of scams like this. A number of reposts with phone numbers changed. One guy met us and acted like he forgot the keys when out of nowhere the real owners showed up. We tried to get the police involved, but they didn't show up after an hour and a half, and unlike TV you can't hold a person for them.

This is hella common. Had similar experience back in college. Lucky I had a friend who knew the home owner. Ended up introducing me to them and got it sorted out
I work in real estate and property management and this happens ALL the time. Legitimate listings get copied from somewhere like Zillow and pasted elsewhere with a lower price and completely different contact info. I can’t tell you how many times we’ve been called by someone who was confused to see our listing for the place they’ve been emailing another person about it. NEVER pay anything for a property you haven’t walked through.
Also, a major vacation rental problem. We have several which we only offer through protected sites like VRBO and Airbnb. Twice, during the extreme busy season, we’ve had families show up at our houses who thought they’d booked them by sending money to some yahoo on Craigslist, only to find the house already occupied by our guests. Now they’re out of the money they saved for a vacation and they’re stuck with nowhere to stay in fully booked town! Just awful.

i know a girl who was looking for an apartment and found one being leased by a guy who used the last name "da wei"...and yes, it was a scam as the apartment had been listed with various names and prices attached but all using the same pictures
Omg I had one of these scams try me earlier this year! I was so shocked but luckily I have some pretty good gut instinct. Granted it was an obvious scam. But at the time I was so desperate for an apartment that I was nearly willing to give over almost all of what I had saved. The idiot however didn't think I wouldn't google the address.. Which happened to be four blocks from where I had currently been living. And I knew that was an elderly/handicapped apartment. And the insides looked way too nice. God damn man.
You’re so funny. In a smart way. I’ll be 74 yrs old tomorrow..live alone...I’m a tiny, kind woman who’s helped and cared for others (both human and non human) most of my life. Only child, single parent...no child support...worked a hectic job for many years...while helping to raise all 5 of my grandkids. They’re all grown up now...working hard..but struggling. None are scammers, that I know of. I just wanted to thank you. This happened to one of my older grandsons about a year ago. His gfriend at time put out the money...and they got screwed. I warned them....she was too excited to listen. They eventually broke up...but I did feel bad for her. She contacted police who could do nothing. A woman already lived in the apartment....and told my grandson that 4/5 people had fallen for the same scam. Hate scammers. Thankfully, so far...I’ve not been scammed. I have very little money now...and not looking for any romance. Ugh😏. I enjoy the company of the 2 stray cats I took in years ago. And I’ve been feeding the 14 feral cats outside (all tnrd) for 9 yrs. Not socializing due to some health issues....and the pandemic (which spikes with a new variant every few months).

I had a scammer the other day saying he was the FBI and my bank accounts were hacked and duplicated but the thing is I haven't started a bank account and he would keep asking for my bank info. And when I finally told him I dont have one, he told me to fuck off and that I'm a bitch and hung up on me 🤣🤣🤣 this was my first experience with a scammer and it was the funniest thing ever!!!

I always fuck with them. I don't have a car or college loans, so I pretend I'm interested and then when I tell them I don't actually have any of that stuff they get mad.

I gave a crazy story too...
I answered the phone to this scammer who was trying to sell me solar panels and he kept asking me things like wether I owned a house wether I had children and stuff like that, I answered with yes to all then when he asked me who my insurance was I said “your mom.” This man straight up said in response “are you lesbian” am I just like “sure.” And hung up. He legit calls me back and says something totally unexpected “will you suck me dick.” I, finding this thing amusing go, “sure” then hang up again. He legit calls me a 3rd time and he goes “when,” then I say “when I block your ass and when you learn to shut the fuck up and have some manners.” Never heard from him again
