I've never been scammed because when thugs see me they don't think I have money. They only go after people they think have money and are nice. Also I can see shifty types from a mile away so I always stay out of their vicinity when walking. I treat them like zombies. Avoid.
Your advice was spot on. You're a true certified New Yorker. All of the tourists out there should listen to you because you know what you are talking about.
Yes i have...bump in the 4 train ,try to.make me pay 6 pack of beers.... i was only one...so didnt pay anyone
Last week on Time Square, I was walking with a friend between 44 to 45 street and 7 Ave. A guy approach us and trying to push his small pack of Famous cookies on to us. Telling us to take it to sponsor for the basketball team. I told him nah no thank you and I keep walking but he keep on pestering me saying that he's not a bad guy. Keep on demanding me to sponsor and I tell him no. He later go after my friend but I reject him and I told him she don't need it. He keep on bothering her and I told him you have to stop it. He said she's trying to help with the sponsor. I drag her away and he starts to get mad. I keep walking and then he finally gave up. People be aware and be careful of all time.
@@dblinkpink2242 that's not being scammed, just bothered by annoying people..you didn't lose any money or possessions.
I bought an authentic Rolux watch in Times Square. $20. Lasted about a month.
High rent is the biggest scam in NYC.
true dat
So they should just give away apartments in one of the most desirable cities in the world? The high rents are directly related to high demand of living spaces.
yup! that's why I left
David Dees no is not
@@cole-nyc What is wrong with you, why are you trying to use logic? Why try to understand supply and demand in a world of me me me!
Grew up in the Bronx, work in NYC and now live in NJ ...I'm always in the city and NEVER ONCE in my 63 years was I ever scammed or robbed. 95% of all people are good human beings and it's the low-life 5% that causes 100% of the problems. Good over Evil is the way to be.
you've not been scammed in 63 yrs until the day you get scammed.
Pizza Rules that’s true my friend but like I said, I have not so far. Of course, as I get older, I expected some wise guy bad ass kid to try and do a number on me. Lol
Agreed... I was reading "NYC Travel Guide" the other day and it was telling the readers to BEWARE OF PICKPOCKETS... and I was like ????? I have NEVER been pickpocketed... Lol like who I doing this...??? They think NYC is spiderman comic or the Newsies are running around like "Aye yous guys! Let's pickpocket!" Lol...
That being said, I'm typing this from my apartment in the Bronx where stuff like this is way less likely to happen, and downtown in Manhattan where their are more tourists and recent transplants I could DEFINITELY see this happening type of scam happening... It's just never been pulled on me
Nikki S I remember graduating from Fordham University and moving to Dallas for a job. 1 month after living there, someone broke into my apartment and robbed a few items. That never happened to me in NYC. You can get robbed or scammed anywhere. There are bad people everywhere, but keep in mind that 95% of all people are GOOD. It’s that lousy 5% that causes all the world’s problems. Peace ✌️
Nikki S I agree ... good communication
Generally speaking, if you are being approached....they're scamming you.
lol
Hoho are you approaching me?
I was walking through port authority and someone bumped into me and dropped a pill bottle and asked me for 50 bucks to pay for it. I remembered watching ur video and I walked away thanks for all ur help
Happy to have helped.
I was scammed in Brooklyn Heights back in 90s. A guy convinced me that if I gave him 20 dollars he could get me into the Blue Note Jazz club for free. I called them and they never heard of the guy. I was a gulible guy from Milwaukee..red hair wearing a varsity letter jacket. Heck I looked like Richie from Happy Days. I learned and moved on. Never happened again. Even in Milwaukee, my family was a victim of violent crime..The one thing I always know is be aware of your surroundings but never live in fear....
Holy guac, the same thing happened to me, the guy looked super cool and needed like $5 or something
Where's Fonzie when you need him.
Anyone notice how aggressive the homeless have become? 😒
No
Thank you Mayor De Blasio. You and your administration have really failed the city & its residents.
I bet! Now with the coin shortage in the US. I can see them having a card reader on a smartphone asking for $$$
Yessss!
Maybe it is because they are homeless!
I learned the hard way in NYC, whenever I stopped instead of walking away when somebody who doesn't look like a tourist accosts you, 95% of the time I regretted it.
I didn't know this kind of scam is an old one! My boyfriend and I had this scam experience in Brooklyn probably a yeqra ago with a guy "dropping" a bag with liquor. We weren't sure so we asked the guy if he's ok but then he wanted us to pay for the broken liquor bottles. We said no and he said he's going to follow us. We left.
Some cats tried to run the CD scam on me in Times Square. I'm from The South Bronx so i saw it a mile away, what stopped me in my tracks though was, My young son was with me at the time, so i had to teach him a lesson in front of the cats on what to look for in such attempts at a scam. I confronted the guy because he tried to pull the "It's because i'm Black right?" routine. YO SOY LATINO DEL BRONX, that stopped him in his tracks, and that's where my sons lesson began as I proceeded to talk to the guy into having a bit more of a moral compass and don't try to guilt trip people into buying your wears. I am fully aware that people need a hustle to get buy, but from my perspective, that's not the way.
@Alimah B , I can't be guilt tripped into buying your wears because of the color of your skin.
@Alimah B, It is a scam, when the CD is blank.
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
All these scammers in New York, they make me sick. It’s like, you made me drop my peanut butter and jelly sandwich, Give me $50.
They definitely pick and choose their targets carefully. Mostly couples, women, tourists, and smaller guys who will most likely give them money and not want to be confrontational. Probably not gonna work on a Wall street bankers looking guys, or HUGE aggressive bodybuilder type of dudes.
This scam happened to me a few years ago in Murray Hill. Instead of food, it was broken glasses. The guy was agressive and followed me for several blocks, but I kept walking.
Shortly after watching this video, I took a walk in my neighborhood. A lady approached me and I immediately thought “This is a scam!” It turns out she just wanted to know where was the nearest subway station. 😂 I still plan to be on alert during when walking around NYC. 😁
so this could be the reason why most tourist find new yorkers a bit rude or not nice towards strangers.
This happened to me less than a week after moving to NYC. I was leaving Bleecker Street Pizza and a lady did it to me. I just saw it happen three days ago outside of Monster Bar. I told the guy that he was just scammed.
I haven't been a target yet but it scares me when I am alone and someone asks me for a dollar and it's not a homeless man.
I love your COVID NYC videos. I’m glad you’re doing what you can to promote the city during these tough times.
Thanks for the video Jon. Take good care and Adriana! You're the best!
thank you for all your vids i love all the info u have to put out, it helps me be aware of things to keep an eye out for
Love your videos! Thanks for the update on New York City! That story if crazy I can't believe people actually do that I live in Kansas City and have never experienced that.
Your videos saved me from many scams when I visited NYC last October! Keep up the great content!
Thanks for sharing! Stay safe 👌
I miss New York, my husband and I celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary on Wednesday August 12/20 and we had planned on going back to NYC to celebrate. We will go back to celebrate in the future when the Canadian/US border reopens. Thanks for uploading videos so that I can live vicariously. Please keep posting.
In Manhattan, too many times I am just walking and some stranger comes up to me and says "Excuse me sir, can I ask you something?" My immediate reaction is to get the f#$k away. I turn and walk. Within .001 seconds you can tell the person is on drugs or just simply a psycho who may get physical. Too many young certifiably crazy people walking the streets, and some of them are very angry. Sad but true.
What I do is, I politely walk away only using few words and gestures...It seems to work.
I usually say politely Sir I need to go. They apologize and I keep on moving.
Thank you for the tip because I go to New York all the time I will be up there Saturday can't wait
Keep on walking. Great advice, Jon! That’s what I do. I’ve never experienced the dropped item scam.
It’s been years but one scam is someone see you walk out of a building and claims to knows you. Gives a story that times had been tough and needs cash. Like Jon saids, Keep walking.
i love new york city and i ve been there multiple times. thank you for producing such great videos that open my eyes for scam like this.
it might help me one day. best wishes from germany!
Yuuuup. I saw some folks try this similar variation of the bottle scam a few weeks ago in Bryant Park. I unfortunately fell for the bottle scam a couple of years back (before I saw your series or even realized that was thing), so I appreciate you informing others about it and other scams!
When I was in NYC the Times Square characters tried to get me to take a photo with them, saying it was free. I knew after watching your vid that it was a scam and I just walked on by.
hahah. Crazy times Richard, crazy times.
Photo of me? Hell no! $200 per! When I lived in NYC, I looked at everyone. Practiced memorizing features, dress, look, relationships. Practiced walking and looking around. Some of the building details are quite amazing.
Outdoor dining in the winter? I can imagine people with their puffy jackets and eating cold meals. ❄️🥶😆
Before clicking this video, I knew what scam it would be! Lol I've seen it twice in Washington Sq.
Chess?
Ar least he said "Hello"
good job sir, stay safe out there
I can’t wait to see your new place John
Thank you. Glad you were okay. Good luck on your potential move.
thank you John great video
Outdoor dining here in Astoria be so crazy especially 30th ave always packed
yeah I always walk by there it is pretty busy. i like Avenue cafe
I remember seeing that exact same scam (the food) going down back in the ninties!
This happens in downtown Toronto too. I am glad you knew what to do, and that you weren't followed.
I can see them adding heat lamps for outdoor winter dining. They already do it in bryant park.
ahahah funny
Good video! I didn't know about those scams. Good luck with your apartment search! Hopefully, you can find something amazing!
Thank you!
I wish I had known about the CD guys ! Thanks for uploading these videos they are very helpful for my future visits to NYC.
Any time!
Valuable information. I grew up in the bronx worked in Manhattan and had this run on me several times. Just keep walking, don't get aggressive, especially if the scammers are in a groups. Look straight ahead and walk briskly. Action Kid has a video where the scammers were a little rough with him. Always be aware of your surroundings.
Yeah I've seen ActionKid's video.
Thanks for the heads-up.
i like your videos stay healty and i am looking for more videos . have a good time greetings edith from germany
Great video as always & BTW Years ago my friend Joe his father was the head painter in those 2 co-ops where you filmed this!
Thanks for sharing !
Great information to know!!
“What time is it??!! Show time!!!!!”
lol
The announcement I always dread hearing on the NY subway
Some of these guys language get abusive when then don't get any attention.
Time to get a watch!
Thanks for the alert!
I love these scammers, especially ones near South Ferry. What these 'perps' seem to forget is that I'm a tourist, which basically means I've got all day to stand around and chat, exchange pleasantries whilst keeping my hands firmly in my pockets. After a good few minutes of random chit-chat they start getting itchy feet as potential victims idly stream past. Everyone should try doing it, I do and I love it. 🤣🤣🤣
Haha, definitely got to try that. Similar to when I keep scam callers on the line for like an hour just messing with them
Yes, please give People heads up on Visiting NY. You give Great Tips, Loved it!! Keep it up.👍🏼💙🖤.
As a former New Yorker, being aware of your surroundings as a way of life. ...😘and Should applies it wherever life takes you.
I enjoyed your video. There was looting and rioting in Chicago last night.
Thank you for this! I didn't realize it was a scam and was pretty common. I was with my son and we were walking in the East Village one night a few months ago.. I saw an old man walking towards us holding a Styrofoam container of food and he was shuffling along slowly. He was old so I just figured he couldn't walk properly. The next thing we know (and I realized it afer) that he deliberately walked very close to me and jostled my elbow and my arm went up and knocked his container over. And he started mumbling, "Look at that. Look at that. No no...." I felt so bad because he was very old and I didn't have singles with me so gave him a fiver. I didn't want to just walk away especially as I didn't want my son to think badly of me and I didn't want to engage or create trouble. After we walked away, I felt off about the whole thing because what he did felt very deliberate.
VEry common.
Here Be Barr (
I am so glad that I watched this video before coming to the city. The food scam just happened to my husband and I. I looked so street smart thanks to you!
🙌🏼
I’m born and raised in NYC and johns videos are the essential go to for anyone wanting to visit or just learn more about NYC
Thanks I appreciate that as someone who grew up on the OTHER side of the Hudson in NJ, haha.
Here Be Barr lmao I guess that’s just how it is sometimes
Thanks for the information, Jon. I think its a good time for you and your wife to move. Be safe.
Thanks 👍
It's always something in a big city, lol... Agreed though (even when accosted by aggressive salespeople in the mall!) your best bet is just to keep walking and let them move on to the next person.
Good analogy
The darker side of me says we should punish them in some way so they have to move on to other things.
Even asking for the time as well that's a big one
I love that you are a Manhattan kind of guy!! I hope you can find a way to stay in Manhattan and have your bigger apartment too!!
Muy bien! I'm travelling there on March. I hope all these lockdown and quarantine stuff goes away by that time.
Thanks Jon!
A yellow cab driver tried to scam myself and a friend once. We were taking a cab from E34th and 4th to E34th and 1st and were several drinks in by that time but it was very cold to walk home. The driver saw us being tipsy and once we got to our place he demanded we pay him $60 for a "5 mile ride". We started to argue in the car but we mentioned that we will call the police if he doesn't let us out of the car, at that point he just said "pay what you see on the meter", which was only $12 for those 3 blocks.
pretty expensive 3 blocks
WOW, I had someone try to run this exact scam on me in 1972. Just like you, I kept on walking. I was on my first trip to NYC, I was walking on 42nd street ( a much more dodgy area then, and this guy walked by me, hit my arm lightly and dropped his paper covered can of beer. He demanded I pay for it and threatened to call the police. I kept moving, making sure I ws aware of where he was. He moved on to the next mark!
Here be barr is the best of you tube
Always looking out for us!
This happened to me in London (the guy dropped what he claimed to be expensive medication). Luckily an officer saw it happen and helped me out.
yupppp i had the dude w circular plate right on 8th btwn 5th n uni couple months ago ...be careful out there
Here be barr is the my favourite you tube channel
I went to the Netherlands in December 2019. There was outdoor dining all over and it was packed. Temperature was around 38.
Yesssss. It happened to me 2 days ago on 7th ave and 34th street. Exactly the way you described it. I told them, it wasn't my fault and that I'll call the police from MSG. One told the other, let him go let him go. And you are right my friend, I saw this scam way before covid19. Thank you for letting us know. I wanted to let everyone know but how? Luckily you brought up the topic. Thanks again dude. Awesome video.
Thanks for sharing!!
Good luck on your apartment search! Can’t blame you for wanting a bigger apartment
Thanks Greg !!
greatvideo thanks
A few years ago this guy in central park came up to me telling me he got robbed and that they banged up his foot. He was asking for some cash to pay the hospital bill. He was even showing me photos of his foot. Knew right away that it was a scam, but to be honest, it was kind of a check-off-your-bucketlist kind of thing for me in New York!
That scam happened to me twice about 8 to 10 years along lexington and lower 50's, but I never gave in. For the food scam the fella was somewhat handicapped with a limp....I'll never forget his face.
" Smiling Faces , Smiling Faces , They Lie , They Don't Tell The Truth " 🎶 In Los Angeles , its always the " I ran out of gas " line. If someone says I'm not going to lie I need a buck towards a beer , I might hook them up. At least they are being straight with me.
"If someone says I'm not going to lie i need a buck towards a beer, i might hook them up." A homeless guy literally saud this to me when i visited downtown LA almost 17 years ago. I gave him the dollar and told him i appreciated his honesty.
Thank you for the heads up for the scam. Report it to the Precinct Police. Its forseeable it might turn violent.
same thing happened to me 3 years ago in Greenwich Village! it was a couple with a box of pizza crusts.
In London, there are restaurants that have igloos along the Thames river. Very cool experience, you forget your outside until someone starts banging on your igloo asking for money lol
"Very 'cool' experience." I believe that indeed... :-)
I had to shut down the Citizen app. There were so many alerts I didn't want to scare myself from moving to NYC. Thank you for sharing this scam. I was not aware it happens and I have done a lot of travelling. I do know to keep on walking though and avoid eye contact on the subway.
Glad I could help. Thanks for joining our patreon !
@@HereBeBarr My pleasure. I'm looking forward to receiving the post card. I miss NY so much!
I’ve had random men yell at me like I’ve done something to them? Usually on a subway platform?
Thank you for the scam alert ,I,m a NewYorker since 1986 and I still feel like I could be a victim to these sorts of things but mostly with age I ve wised up considerably. Also Ridgewood has affordable apartments and condos are being constantly constructed in the last 10 years.
I've been affected by the "clear tip cup getting kicked over" scam...... they got mad when I laughed and said "next time I'm kicking that glass like an NFL Punt
Love you bro
Thanks !
What would we do without you Barr! 😌🗽
Thank you!!! Saludos a Adriana .
Outdoor dining...may be they need to consult the Cheesehead Packer fans that tailgate in below zero weather :)
Not quite the same thing! When you tailgate you usually bring your own food!
Can someone please explain the 14 day quarentine law, do i have to quarantine before i go to new york or is it after i arrive at NY
Hey Jon. This is an international trick! Before Covid, I was planning on going on a short trip to Europe, so I watched some UA-cam videos and saw this very trick being played on tourists
in Athens. It was a slight variation, but the trickster knocked over something when people walked by and then berated them for knocking his can over. Some of the people were gullible enough to give him money! -- And another variation is just for tricksters to drop coins on the sidewalk, and then pick the distracted folks pockets. So... great advice for people to keep walking. Thank you for spreading the word!
OMG this exact situation happened to me last night on Mercer and Waverly! I offered to buy the guy something at the deli but he only wanted money
These scams never happen to me, being 6.4 250lbs and mean-looking (just looking, i promise), they usually try to avoid me. But they did try the cruise scam on me a few times, as i was walking to the south ferry, lol
I look too nice is the problem 😅
I'm barely 5ft tall but I've been told my look can burn a hole in the asphalt, so no one approaches me :).
@@HereBeBarr Yeah, people who don't look tough tend to get targeted, for various things. 😓
I think they’ll do some sort of heat lamp thing for indoor dining
I just booked a trip and I’m from California. Should I cancel it or would I be able to do what is planned?
Wow I can’t believe they tried that one on you!
aha! yes, I recall back in 1990, there was a scam where one guy would spill mustard on your suit, while the other guy steals your wallet, but yes, excellent advice, we just have to keep walking
This is great advice. Knock on wood - this hasn't happened to me *yet* but I've heard of it happening to others!
It happens a lot, i literally just walk away laughing, also the reason i always walk with my headphones in
Oh yeah, I've never seen it with food but they've tried it on me with sunglasses. The guy was aggressive about it. I said, "Do I look like a tourist? Call a cop. I'm sure they've never heard of the broken sunglasses thing before. Go sell some candy on the subway and say it's for your youth basketball tesm.." The guy skedaddled.
Yea you didn’t say that. All that yadda yadda would have gotten you punched in mouth.
A guy tried the broken glasses scam on me just about 2 hours ago. 5th ave /52st. When I grabbed my phone to call 911, he sucker-punched me and started walking away, and there was a cop right there too right across the street. Very aggressive obviously. Would not recommend anyone engage these people at all. Do not stop and just keep walking.
Even though I was born and raised in L.A NYC is and always will be my 2nd Home.
Yes I was born and raised in CLE but NYC is my home away from home❤️👍
I think you should go ahead and move to Brooklyn already 😂
My first trip to NYC, we walked through Central Park to get to The Met. Crossed paths with a Monk who wanted a donation for beaded braclets. Wasn't carrying cash so kept walking, found out later that's a scam. Not cool
I had the same thing at the rockerfella centre and he tried it again in Central park
