  • In this episode we discuss the benefits of building a custom fishing rod to the specifications and application of fishing you are doing. Captain Mike goes into our local rod builder to pickup a new set of rods and talk show with Chad.
Let us know if you are an advocate of building a custom rod or if you are completely satisfied with an over the shelf product.

If you got it... Get it. It always pays to get the best you can afford. I lucked into a second hand custom rod in Fernandina... Like 15 years ago. Never a problem with it.

Chad is the man. I had a sick rod built a couple months back. I used the "Cpt Mike Specs" . love it!

Im not sure if a rod built for you vs for everyone has more life on it but yea custom rods are pretty cool, I have a $250 Nomad Design rod I bought from the store and a $400 spinning rod I made and I end up using the store bought rod more.

I have custom rods and off the shelf rods. The custom rods I have, I LOVE. But, the customs rods are specifically built for targeting specific species, specific ways and even in specific locations. As for my off the shelf rods, these are much more versatile and cost less per rod, at least for how I fish.

I agree with you on custom rods. The last three rods I got I built myself. I ordered all of the tools, equipment and rod components from Mud Hole Tackle and built the rods exactly how I wanted them and they perform really well.

I've been a recreational angler for over 30 years now. Sebastion Inlet was my favorite haunt.
Loomis Rods have been my go to.
Now I have a new Wife that LOVES to fish! & I'd really love to get her something customized from Biscayne Rods.
    She's gonna Love It!
Thanks for another great video Mike

as a custom rod builder I see the difference especially with the strenth and efficiency of the rods.you can be successful with a off the shelf rod.but dollar for dollar there is no comparison

Yup i agree. I bought off the shelf rods for years but when my family get our boat this season i will be going custom all the way. Agreed. But i do like color and so does wife and daughter.

Check out Kistler Custom Rods out of Magnolia Texas. We build rods for mainly freshwater and lighter saltwater, but can do anything you need. We have some lower cost ($200) stock carbon and graphite rods as well.

I guess you could call most of my offshore rods semi-custom. I love Key Largo rods for my live bait rods. I think they have the best action of any rod I have ever fished and for $135, they can’t be beat.

I've been buying custom rods for 30 years. I had the same guy building them all that time. I've got a flounder trip coming up in Sept and they, Connley Fishing, are building me a light tackle stick based on a Carbon Fiber blank. Super light and super strong.

I think the need for custom all depends on the application and skill level of the angler. Those are some great looking rods. Gotta love the confession that you also hit the ceiling fan with your rods, We all do it. That's test level 1, level 2 is the door jam, not many survive that one. Great Vid~!

I have some custom rods and I have some rods that are semi custom . I really enjoy all of them equally. I fish with great equipment at all times and by making great decisions with the rods and reels and all terminal tackle I am able to enjoy a well rounded adventure most often without failure

I started building my own rods. Will never by a store bought one again. You get exactly what you want when going custom. I agree with keeping it simple. More thread and epoxy just adds weight.

Well I would love to have custom rods but I don’t. I catch my tarpon on Shimano Tallus rods which I really like and I use falcon low rider salts for my trout fishing and my wife uses the Walmart specials cause she reels lures to the very tip and knocks the ceramic out almost every time but I love her anyways.

I fly fish and on my side of things the company built rods are as good as custom. But building a custom rod is special and there is something special about fishing them.

Off-the-shelf rods are great they do their job and the stuff that they have now is very high quality. Now if you want a rod with your name your logo the color you want and you want to buy a bunch to match for you're different fishing style then a custom rod is the way to go but you are going to pay more money and its probably going to work the same.

There’s a lot of speculation when it comes to custom rods. I think it all boils down to personal preference and budget. Not a lot of people can afford a $500 rod. With that being said, there are a lot of GREAT rod manufacturers that make rods that last forever

For me, I can't afford custom, so off the shelf/rack it is. I have had good and bad experiences with them. Bad is generally due to user error.
If I was a professional fisherman, running a high end charter, fishing tournaments, it would be all custom.
If I could afford a custom rod, I would probably build one for me anyway, I just cant justify it right now.

I put my money into my reels, I like solid built mid priced offshore rods, Star Rods, been around forever, get the job done and easily replaceable, although never had a problem with durability. Higher quality for Inshore, St. Croix, as quality pays off more.

    • @stevewakefield6034
      @stevewakefield6034 3 роки тому +1

I fished Star Rods from the time I could hold one until about 10 years ago when I contacted them tryin to buy Blue wrapped rods like they had in the 80s and 90s. They pretty much told me it couldn’t be done to look for an old set someone was selling. Do when I did some research I realized they weren’t even American made anymore they’re Chinese junk. That’s when I started going around to all the local builders and looking at rods. Pretty much narrowed it down to Connley and X Generation and went with Connley when I found a complete set of brand new rods that were never fished for about $1000 cheaper then buying retail. Bought all my rods and reels from Connley ever since and never had any problems bringing anything back when I break it!
