Thank you everyone for your support, it means so much to me! My goodness, we hit 150 likes already which means I owe you part 2! I’ve already started editing and will drop it by this weekend at the latest. Thank you!!! 🙏
Just a heads up everyone, I’ve been editing part 2 of this video the past couple days but it’s taking longer than I’d like. I’m gonna try and drop it on Tuesday or Wednesday!! Thank you for your patience!!
Hey Benjie, One reason I like watching your videos is that you explain things very clearly, and/or ask the questions I would have asked. This video is a perfect example. The contents list with time stamps is helpful as well.
I use a Shimano Tranx 500 on a UC 9E. This setup works just fine for me. I was going to get a Seeker Ulua 93H but they have not been in stock for quite some time.
Just ordered a Phenix Black Diamond 30-80 to pair with my okuma alijos 12n to fish as a 30-50 pound setup with 40 being the focus. I love your videos Benjie! Keep em rollin brother🤙🏻
Good information! I am in the market for a reel. Need a leftie, so that's kind of limiting. I'm leaning toward the pen fathom 15XN or pony up some big bucks for the avit SX6/4 raptor mc...... Thanks for sharing.!
Awesome Sean thank you for the comment. I've got a bluefin tuna version that I'm currently working on that will be out most likely next Sunday. Hope you can check it out. Wishing you a terrific weekend.
Great video Benjie! Hey on the yo-yo fishing, are you using a dropper loop with a torpedo weight to get to the bottom or how do you normally set your rig up for that?
What’s your take on going 400 series bait caster instead of 20 series star drag conventional? I want to get a surface iron stick for patties and boils for YT and small BFT
Very good video, beautiful gear. You guys make a nice Team. Anthony is very direct, concise and knowledgeable while with Benjie Kim provides good enthusiasm and excitement. Love the Seeker Ulua, like to see that in a 20 lbs composite. Having the right rod and reel for the particular fish size and style of fishing is important. Mostly, I would think 2-rod and reels would be sufficient. Medium for casting and live bait. Medium Heavy if bigger fish show up. 3rd setup for deep jigging. Possibly a 4th setup just in case you get into cow tuna.
Thank you so much for the positive words of encouragement. Anthony is an expert and super articulate to boot! Great suggestions, I definitely agree with you!
Thank you! For Catalina, I would check out the Dreamer (6 pack out of Berth Landing), Pescador (10 pack out of Redondo), and Gerry Mahieu (private 4 pack catchmorebass.com). These are the ones I've had really positive experiences with. 22nd landing has plenty of options but I don't have proper experience to give a full recommendation but the Native Sun does regular trips.
NICE!! The vid i been waiting for. I get so jealous watching the captains on these bout pull out those huge rods and chuck their surface irons 100 yds.
When I got into this game, in Connecticut, I didn't know much and kept buying [over powered gears. I am planning for yellow tail this year. My question is if my set up would be adequate. Shimano Terez MH 7' paired with Daiwa Lexa 400. What do you think?
Yes, that setup will be just fine for yellowtail. I believe the Terez is 40-80 lb which will handle yellowtail and small tuna and same for the lexa 400.
I’m looking for an all around jig stick that I could through poppers on. The rod I’m looking at is a Shimano teremar tmc90xhb2. It’s mono rating is 30 to 50 but dosent say it’s power pro rating. I’ve felt it in shops and feels like a 30 to 70 but still loads up well and cast lures 2-5 ounces. Do you think this would suit my needs? Also what reel would you recommend other than a Tranx 500 because they don’t make a lefty so I’m kinda stuck on what reel to get.
Hello, I need some tackle help. I have sea lion reel from bass pro shop with 4:9:1 gear ratio attached to a 7ft rod. I was also looking at a daiwa 8000 with 7.5ft rod. I was wondering with the gear that I have now would be okay for yellowtail and would the daiwa 8000 do the job for yellowtail?
FYI, check your editing set up. The audio is coming out only on the left headphone only. While the right is clicking and popping on occasion. Thanks for the content as usual. 👍
Oh no, bad audio is the WORST. For some reason, everything sounds good on my end. Thanks for letting me know David. Anyone else having this issue? Please comment here!
@@Jointroller89 ahhhh gotcha, awesome Tyler, thanks for the heads up. Wasn’t sure if you were someone I recently shared the rail with on a boat or something. Good stuff man, thank you for the support!
Hi Angel, good questions - yes, when referring to a certain pound setup, it is referring to the leader. So the same reel can have a different leader depending on the trip but its best to match whichever leader you're using to a rod that can accommodate. And absolutely you can go with braid as main line in the 40 to 60 lb range. That's actually what I have on my conventionals, but mono can also be a great option.
Hi John, in regards to whether the Lexa 400 is good for yellowtail, at least up to the 15 to 20 pound range. In terms of ideal rod pairing, I'm not sure but let me ask around and find out and get back to you here!
Hey John so I haven’t heard back from a buddy I reached out to BUT maybe check out this video from my buddy - ua-cam.com/video/jPbjvWLgX9U/v-deo.html His video recommends a rod pairing for the lexa 400 and also reviews the reel itself. Really great video and channel. I hope that helps get you in the right direction.
@@BenjieKimFishing thanks! Could you talk about whether to get a right or left hand bait caster? I am right handed and I am used to throwing spinning reels with the right arm. I recently tried a right handed conventional reel and it felt super awkward. Could not cast well at all. Should I get a left handed bait caster? The advice have been mixed. Some ppl say not needing to switch hands when using the left bait caster is better. However, others say you need to use your right arm for cranking power. Help! I am leaning towards a lexa 400 HD. They are not cheap. I don’t want to get the wrong one. Thanks!
@@johnchoi5981 hey John, imo you should get what you’re comfortable with and what works for you. I will say that I’ve never seen a right handed person using a conventional with a handle on the left side. As far as baitcasters go, it really is dealers choice as far as I know. Personally, all my low profiles are left handed because that’s what was taught to me when I was getting more serious, and now it’s just something I’m used to. But I do see the benefit of not having to switch hands after the cast. My recommendation would be to go to a shop and ask to hold the lexa 400 and see what you feel most comfortable with and go with that. Hope that helps 🤙
80# on a Makaira 16 or equivalent, 10-16 oz torpedo sinker depending on current. I start in high gear for the bite and use it to get the fish away from the structure early on, then switch to low gear when the fight goes mid column toward the boat.
What Reel To Get It’s my dads birthday and one of his buddies got him a Phenix Black Diamond PSW-S 700H. It’s rated 20-60 lbs and I want to buy him a reel to go with it. I have a budget of around $250, and I want to get a reel we can fish for dorado, yellow tail, and more big fish.
At that budget I'd look at the Penn Fathom NLD2 25 or 30. I'm running the Penn Fathom 25 NLD2 with my Phenix Black Diamond 809XHJ 20 to 60 and it's basically my all around work horse setup for fly lining. I've caught small bluefin and yellowfin up to 40 pounds and have had no issues. The Fathom is an incredible bang for buck option. It's priced a bit higher than your budget, but I think would be worth it. Just my opinion though, go with what makes the most sense for you! Tight lines
Get the hi end one. If you get a cheap reel, not many people want a used one. If sell a high end reel, may be you lose only $200 which is same cost of low end reel but you enjoyed high end reel.
Oh no, you’re the second one to point out audio issues. Thanks for specifying this. I didn’t notice any issues while editing or on my phone while testing but I’m guessing it becomes obvious if using headphones. Will have to fix this for part 2 as we recorded on the same equipment.
