What does the Quran really say about a Muslim woman's hijab? | Samina Ali | TEDxUniversityofNevada

  • In recent times, the resurgence of the hijab along with various countries’ enforcement of it has led many to believe that Muslim women are required by their faith to wear the hijab. In this informative talk, novelist Samina Ali takes us on a journey back to Prophet Muhammad's time to reveal what the term “hijab” really means -- and it's not the Muslim woman's veil! So what does “hijab” actually mean, if not the veil, and how have fundamentalists conflated the term to deny women their rights? This surprising and unprecedented idea will not only challenge your assumptions about hijab but will change the way you see Muslim women.
    Samina Ali is an award-winning author, activist and cultural commentator. Her debut novel, Madras on Rainy Days, won France’s prestigious Prix Premier Roman Etranger Award and was a finalist for the PEN/Hemingway Award in Fiction. Ali’s work is driven by her belief in personal narrative as a force for achieving women’s individual and political freedom and in harnessing the power of media for social transformation. She is the curator of the groundbreaking, critically acclaimed virtual exhibition, Muslima: Muslim Women’s Art & Voices.
    This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

    Edit : the whole point of my comment is that in Islam, a guy averting his gaze is just as important as a lady covering up.
    Averting the gaze away from the tempting things have been mentioned many times in Qur'an. Whether it was for men , or women.
    So, when people blame harassment on women (which happens in all countries, but now I want to focus on the Muslim ones) it is not because of religion, but rather because of society.
    I believe that we have to teach our boys how to lower their eyes as much as we teach our girls to cover up.

      Rosalind’s comment is very true. I wish more folks would read the Q’uran, if only to understand what it actually says vs. what has been interpreted incorrectly by people with an agenda. As Rosalind’s quote demonstrates, men have responsibilities, too. And that equality of responsibility is important to acknowledge, but the fact that the burden of punishment has been placed for many generations much more on women than on men is important to address so that we begin to actually fix it.

    My personal experience is when I choose not to wear a hijab around the people who do. They judge me as being wrong, not modest and less than them which I don't agree with. What you wear is a part of the many wisdom. But meanwhile, it is a big lifestyle change, especially for people living in a non-Islamic country. Overly imposing this rule before all the other verses is forming a barrier for women like me to get closer to Quran. Hence, voices trying to investigate and elaborate more on this context are essential.
    Mutual respect for garment choices is important. For that, we need to be more open-minded and dare to listen to different interpretations.

      HIJAB is mandatory. That verse has existed for over 1400 yrs, are you saying that previous Muslim women didn't understand the verse and they just made it upon themselves to cover their hair? So they misunderstood and you are the one with the correct interpretation of that verse. Yes, Allah did not detail in the verse how the cloths should be worn exactly but the Hadiths did (i.e for a Muslim woman she should be cover completely except for face and hand). Since you choose to ignore the prophetic interpretation of the hijab verses, choose to disregard the scholarly opinion and challenge basic Islamic ethical grounds, that's left to you.

      They applied Reasoning…We need to be clear that Allah didn’t take responsibility to protect hadith…he only took responsibility of Quran…Hadith can be wrong and there’s nothing wrong with that given that Scholars had to use reasoning to separate fake and real ones and that god didn’t took responsibility for its protection…More over the practice of ijtihaad is very important to know which one of the Hadith is more suitable pf today’s era… No one is changing the basic ethics of islam because Hadith isn’t the basic ethic of islam, it’s Quran and the verse in Quran is ambiguous in interpretation…Hijab wasn’t ever mentioned in the Quran…for examples ; There are Hadits which proved that Prophet Muhammad barred women from going to Cemeteries but he himself allowed it later because times were different than the times it was barred in…
      That’s why Quran is meant to be understood while keeping current societal issues in mind and not merely by “sacrificing modernity”…

    Writing this, I am a young Christian teenager who seeks to know more about other religions out of a sense of curiosity. I am not a Muslim, but the religion does fascinate me. I will not seek to ascertain the veracity of Ms. Ali's claims, but I will share what I know to be true about Islam today. I truly don't want to start a flaming contest, but please, if anyone has any opposing viewpoints to mine, I would like a CIVIL DISCUSSION, and not a chain of hatemail.
    I think that it is fair to say that when most people think of Islam today, the first association that comes to mind is that of extremism. Terrorism. ISIS. 9/11. And for good cause, too-Islam, of all major religions, has earned itself the worst reputation in terms of terrorism. Given all that ISIS has done in the past year, it's hardly surprising. Of course, the logical follow-up to this observation is that this extremist mindset is followed only by a small percentage of the Islamic faith. Accordingly, whenever you see a veiled woman or a man wearing a thobe in public, one should not think, "Muslim, therefore terrorist" and give them a fifty-foot berth. That, in turn, is stereotyping at best, prejudiced bigotry at worst, and dead wrong no matter how you slice it.
    Modern Islam is filled with a plethora of ideals that modern Enlightenment thinking finds wrong, offensive. Most of these concern women and female children, as was addressed in this video. I do not know what the Q'ran states about these individuals and their expectations, but I feel that there are two points that most people can agree on: first, that Islamic women are not treated with the respect that they are owed as human beings, and secondly, that women are more than the possessions and trophies that they are sometimes regarded as. Take this as you will, but I personally feel that women deserve much more than modern Islam gives to them.
    When I see what the typical view of Islam has become, I feel grieved. From taking AP World History last year, I know well how Islam has shaped the world-for better or for worse. It has a beautiful, illustrious history, and the reputation it has now does not do it credit. Like Ms. Ali states here, Islam is so much more-should be known for so much more-than it is right now. Accordingly, I'd like to challenge people to look beyond the obvious flaws it has on the surface and to look at its heart, which is beautiful.

      Hi Rachel, I read your comment and you said that you felt like islam doesn't Gove women the respect they deserve. Much of what this woman said was false, especially what she said about the hijab. She made the hijab seem like something that is oppressive, but it's the opposite actually. The hijab is not solely meant to hide the body from men so they don't get "aroused". Since women are so sexualized in society and treated like toys, the hijab is supposed to be a tool to guard a woman's beauty so people's first impressions of her will not be of her looks, but rather on her intellect and her personality. It helps to give women the respect that they deserve. And also, when she said that islam wants women to stay at home and be useless and uneducated was untrue. The Prophet Muhammad said "The seeking of knowledge is obligatory for every Muslim." - Al-Tirmidhi, Hadith 74. Knowledge is valued and seemed in Islam, and it is not meant only for the men. Feel free to message me if you would like to know anything else. 😊

    • @sarahsendian8156
      @sarahsendian8156 7 років тому +21

      I honestly don't know where you're getting any of your information from. I said a woman covers so she can show the world her intellect before her looks. Everyone judges people based on their looks. There are even stereotypes that blonde women are dumb, and brunette women are strict and boring. The hijab is meant to break those stereotypes and allow a woman to be valued for her mind rather than her body. Women nowadays are often taken advantage of for their bodies and are underestimated because of their looks. The hijab gives women the respect they deserve and forces people to put aside those stereotypes and actually get to know the woman behind the hijab instead. Islam is a religion of peace and it puts women on a pedestal by saying the paradise is at the feet of mothers and another hadith that says mothers deserve the most respect and loyalty, ‘O Messenger of God! Who among the people is the most worthy of my good companionship? The Prophet (PBUH) said: Your mother. The man said, ‘Then who?’ The Prophet said: Then your mother. The man further asked, ‘Then who?’ The Prophet said: Then your mother. The man asked again, ‘Then who?’ The Prophet said: Then your father. (Bukhari, Muslim).

      Hello! :) I find that there is some misinformation in this video and as a muslim feel compelled to point it out. Quran explicitly states in surah nur that women should bring their khimar (headscarf) forward to cover their bosoms as well. It does not say take off the khimar. And for the wives of the prophets an additional covering was ordered: the hijab. A literal screen between them and non mahrams. Hence a headscarf covering your bosom is obligatory and it does not take away from any muslim woman’s rights. It actually prevents them from being sexualised and hence makes them feel more confident in their bodies without being gazed at in odd ways. I found this true for myself when i started hijab as well! No more body dysmorphia! :) I hope I was able to clear some misconceptions, and pray that I am not the cause of misinformation either. Afterall, Allah knows best. :) Have a great day friend xx

    Why are most people missing the main point. She is talking about women empowerment through her own decisions. It's not about whether she has to wear the hijab or not. It's as to WHY. The hijab I wear is empowering to me. It gives me a sense of identity. Mostly because I chose it. For some other cultures, like described in the video, it's demeaning. So before going off and insulting people, understand their reasoning first. Please.

      @@abdel.527 Ok, that is ALSO true. If I thought it deteriorated my worth I would have not wore it, but that is not the case. @Angel-mh8qb 5 років тому +26

      @Bjørn Wikan And I have nothing to say against that, but people shouldn't afraid to put it on either. Fear can also be a type of oppression. So I guess my point is it's different from person to person. Nobody should tell you what or what not to do. You're happy with your religion please continue with it, if your not happy with then do anything other than changing it and tell everybody to change as well. Sometimes it's the culture's fault, it is oppressing woman and not the religion itself, because as she said in the Quran the hijab is only mentioned 3 times.

    • @Angel-mh8qb
      @Angel-mh8qb 5 років тому +16

      @Bjørn Wikan depends on where you live and what that hat means to that culture. This is where I said it's a culture's fault and not a religion's fault. Their is nowhere in the coran that said "a woman is to be killed if she does not wear a hijab" nowhere. Religion is a set of rules, that is all. Per example, take a constitution. A constitution is a set of law and rules. If a politician misuses it by twisting the meaning of it's words, is it the constitution's fault or the politician's?

    As a Christian, one of my favourite verses of the Bible is Matthew 5:29, where Jesus says in reference to a man looking at a woman lustfully "If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and throw it away". Instead of telling women to cover up he attacks the men for their lustful thoughts! Having watched this video now, it seems as though Islam has a similar approach, which I never thought before. Although the women were told to wear the garment to stop themselves being harassed, it was aimed at the men who were to blame, and the women were merely being protected, not blamed for dressing immodestly.

      ella está mintiendo sobre el islam primero, quiere decir que el hiyab es solo algo tradicional cuando las mujeres musulmanas lo usan cuando Dios mencionó claramente que el hiyab está ligado, por eso no mencionó los otros 2 versos, también el dicho del profeta (hadiz) te dire el segundo verso
      Allah dice (interpretación del significado):
      “Y di a las mujeres creyentes que bajen la mirada (de mirar cosas prohibidas), y protejan sus partes íntimas (de actos sexuales ilegales) y que no muestren su adorno excepto solo lo que es aparente (como ambos ojos por necesidad para ver). camino, o palmas externas de las manos o un ojo o vestido como velo, guantes, cubierta para la cabeza, delantal), y cubrir con sus velos a Juyubihinna (es decir, sus cuerpos, caras, cuellos y senos) y no revelar su adorno excepto a sus maridos, o sus padres, o los padres de sus maridos, o sus hijos, o los hijos de sus maridos, o sus hermanos o los hijos de sus hermanos, o los hijos de sus hermanas, o sus mujeres (musulmanas) (es decir, sus hermanas en el Islam), o el (mujeres) esclavas que poseen su mano derecha, o sirvientes viejos que carecen de vigor, o niños pequeños que no tienen sentido del sexo femenino. Y no dejen que pateen para revelar lo que esconden de su adorno. Y todos ustedes rueguen a Allah que los perdone a todos, oh creyentes, para que puedan tener éxito”. [al-Nur 24:31]
      en el islam, el hiyab es protección para ella, sabe que cuando una mujer camina desnuda significa libertad, también se burló de los eruditos musulmanes cuando no sabe nada sobre nuestra religión, existe la importancia de ellos

      no hablan sin mencionar versos del corán del hadiz
      Después de eso, ella dijo que las niñas musulmanas no tienen educación y se casan a una edad temprana. Les diré que buscar el conocimiento es una obligación en el Islam también. La primera palabra revelada al Profeta Muhammad (la paz sea con él) fue "Leer" o "Recitar". " Esto significa la importancia de buscar el conocimiento y la alfabetización.
      ella también quiere decir que una niña musulmana no elige casarse o no, mientras que un matrimonio en el Islam no se puede hacer si ella no acepta
      Ella mintió sobre estas cosas, mientras que realmente quiero que sepas que el Islam es la verdad, no es una creencia ciega.

      There is a verse that says both men and women should lower their gaze.

    • @uhhuh2354
      @uhhuh2354 2 роки тому +171

      We do tell men to respect women. Men and women should both lower their gaze and not engage in physical contact to respect each other's boundaries and proprietary.
      As for only women wearing hijab, it's meant as protection and empowerment for us. Imagine a woman going to the gym in yoga pants and a sports bra. Although the ideal situation would be for men not to gaze lustfully upon that woman, the realistic scenario would be that more likely than not, that woman would have unwanted onlookers gazing at her disrespectfully. By wearing the hijab, we are taking away men's ability to sexualize our bodies as a commodity or in other words objectify us. You can't really sexualize something that you can't see.
      Another benefit of the hijab for women is that by hiding our beauty, we would be certain that a potential spouse isn't marrying us for our looks, but who we are as a person. After all, looks don't last forever, and when you get married to someone you want that relationship to last till death; not until your beauty fades or you get older.
      In addition to that, I also want to add that men are also required to wear a hijab in a certain sense. Everything from their bellybutton (i.e. navel) to their knees has to be covered.

Islam doesn’t change. It doesn’t evolve. The fundamentals stay for fundamentals even 209998 years into the future. A commandant from the Creator, the One who wants the best for men and women, has commanded that people observe modesty, that woman wear a head covering and man lower his gaze.

      Search TED Islam/Muslims and you'll find all the featured talks by "Muslims" with "strong connections" trying to portray Islam in a better light with the invariable denial of all Islamic violence as an aberration contrary to the quranic teaching, Islamic history and the historical account of the life of the founder of Islam.

      If you hate or ignore Islam, you should read it well in order to convince others of what you want.
      The Islamic religion is all in the Quran and the hadiths and deeds of the Prophet Muhammad. Other than that does not reflect Islam. If you find a bearded man walking in the street or preaching, he expresses himself unless he says God said in the verse like this and the Prophet said in that position.
