As the Athletic Director and head coach of the Varsity Soccer team at Ryerson University, Dr. Joseph is often asked what skills he is searching for as a recruiter: is it speed? Strength? Agility? In Dr. Joseph's TEDx Talk, he explores self confidence and how it is not just the most important skill in athletics, but in our lives.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Thanks for listing this out, Good job!!! One correction, the actual quote is "I am the captain of my ship, and the master of my FATE". It's a quote from Invictus, by William Ernest Henley. It's important, because the author of the quote is saying that he is in control of his destiny in life. His faith came from God; but the author was saying "Master of my FATE" fate, destiny, outcomes, etc

Can't really agree on this. I mean sure: being yourself and living according to your own truth is the best thing you can do on the long run, since well, it doesn't help you much to live like society wants you to if you hate yourself for doing so espiaclly giving the fact you're stuck with yourself until you die (eh, that turned dark really quick...). But you won't feel confident all the time. There will be people who will try to take you down and that might trigger your insecurities or fears and whatnot. Sometimes it is hard to get away from these people and the experience you'll have with them might even scar you. Am I saying you should change to avoid that? No, I'm not. It will be hard, that's what I'm saying.

You can be with them and not be with them at same time. If you can, Live separate from them and stay away from them for a while. When I was starting to talk about Vitiligo, the skin condition that changed my life, my father would not have it, will call me, shout and ask me to stop everything I'm doing about Vitiligo publicly. I stopped taking his calls for 6months and even that of my mother (I don't live with them, we live 6houra apart). After 6months when I eventually take his call, I had gone far in what I had decided to do, he called and pleaded to see him, I got his blessings. I was going to stay off for as long as it takes because my self-peace supercedes another thing for me. No, I can never allow my fellow human being to get me messed up mentally while they continue to enjoy peace. I hope this helps.

In order to be confident you need to be comfortable with yourself. You need to be able to like yourself. It can be very hard to like yourself when you haven't accomplished much and you're still struggling. That is why it's so important to get a good education and work your ass off.

    • @TonyVega123
      @TonyVega123 8 років тому +5

***** You are right up to a point. The problem is that very few people who haven't accomplished anything are confident. When we are children we don't understand the importance of succeeding in life. Since most people value themselves and other people based on what they've done and accomplished then confidence follows. It all comes down to what you believe gives yourself value.

Wash it off in the morning. Keep the procedure up until the hair starts to come back then be sure to keep it watered as often as possible. You will be heading to the barber shop in no time at all.

    Important Clippings:
    - Self-confidence is the ability or belief to believe in yourself to accomplish any task
    - He sees it as a skill because he believes it can be trained.
    1. The easiest way to build self-confidence, repetition, Maybe it shouldn't be repetition, but maybe it should be persistence.
    - Get out there, do what you want to do, and do not accept no.
    2. The other one is self-talk; We know for a fact that thoughts influence actions. We need to get our own self affirmations.
    - Get away from people who will tear you down, there is enough of that. All the things that make him who he is, he puts down on a list besides his mirror.
    - Your own brag sheets. Your own letter about the things you are proud of.
    - Stop the negative self-talk.
    3. You can teach self-confidence in others. Because we are educators, we are critical by nature in what we do.
    - Catch them while they're good. Praise the positive behavior we want to reinforce.
    4. Self-confident people interpret feedback the way they choose too. No one will believe in you, unless you do.
We are supposed to be different.

The average person can’t take too many No’s. They don’t realize that the No’s are preparing them for the Yes. Most people don’t make it to the Yes because they give up so easily. There’s always going to be a Yes somewhere. When you keep going consistently you get to those Yes’s faster. Once you keep going after that you find yourself getting more Yes’s than No’s because you have now developed a skill and you are confident about what you’re doing. You literally came into alignment with success by not giving up!

"Confident people interpret the feedbacks the way they choose to". This sentence touches me a lot because we can't always get enough positive feedbacks or encouragement in our life and study. In this case, we have to learn to keep ourselves feeling good, otherwise we may decide to quit. This is definitely a significant capacity for me to pick up.

One of my students told me that when he discussed his anxieties with someone close to him, like his wife or a close friend, then he found that the moment he started opening up to them, the anxiety decreased-even before he received any advice or support.
Togetherness definitely decreases anxiety. There is a saying in the wisdom of Kabbalah that “a sorrow shared is a sorrow halved,” i.e. when we share a sensation, we divide it up, and in turn it becomes more manageable.
Since it is quite easy to see how sharing our experiences lessens our negative feelings, the question is why do we not use this ability more? Why is it so hard for us to share our fears and anxieties with others?
We are indeed afraid of opening our hearts, letting everyone see that we have certain fears and anxieties. That is, in addition to whatever fears and anxieties we hold within, we usually have additional anxieties about sharing them with others, that it might cause others to perceive us as weak. Since society in general values stronger, smarter, wealthier and fitter individuals, opening up our anxieties to such a society makes us vulnerable to exploitation. We thus need to seek a social environment that would not exploit us for opening up, but would rather give us a sense of faith and confidence that it can help us cope with any negative feelings.
A social setting that can guarantee faith and confidence in its members is one that actively draws itself to the upper good and benevolent force-the force of love, bestowal and connection. It is this very same force that awakens negative feelings in us, whether they be fears, anxieties or several other painful sensations, in order for us to draw closer to that force, and we do so by drawing closer to each other.
If we wish to connect with the upper force and let its perfect quality of love, bestowal and connection fill our lives with a sensation of faith and confidence, then we need to emulate such a quality toward other people-giving them a sense of faith and confidence, and for them to do the same toward us. By wanting to positively connect with others, we then start awakening the positive force dwelling in nature into the connections we create, and we then feel a new sense of faith and confidence wash away any anxieties that we might be holding within.

Self confidence is without a doubt the most important skill you can attain.

Don't forget what you did right just because it went ok and now you only need to focus on improving what you did wrong or because you'd feel narcisstic self-praising yourself. Give as much time to the positive feedback you got and what went excellent as to what mistakes you made and didn't go quite as well this time.

All those points I made are beyond our control.
Points 1 & 2 are limited on mental attitude and willpower.
Point 3 is limited based on your ability to use your environment to your advantage by the available opportunities to meet new people.
Point 4 is thus far the "most" limited because there is no practical way of going about this.

Jessica, Reduce negative thoughts. Your breath is directly related to your mind [brain] causing negative thoughts-anxiety. For a relaxed life sit on a chair, back erect, eyes closed, be still and observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for around 5-10-15 minutes or more. Don’t fight with your thoughts. Slowly they will reduce and relax the mind. Deep inhalation-exhalation is not needed. Day or night before sleep sit or lie down and observe your breath. Be as still as possible as it reduces negative thoughts. Make this a lifetime daily habit to have a good life. Best wishes Shyaaam Sir. -Counsellor.

This reminds me of my high school biology teacher. She did not take “I dont know” as an answer in class but there is such a fine line between embarrassing your students and encouraging them to speak up in class even if they think they have the wrong answers. Maths class was a nightmare, the teacher was always calling out names and making people stand up and solve problems on the chalk board. But biology❤️❤️ oh man... she would even go as far as telling us exactly what to research on for the next day so we could be prepared. And she’d allow us to help other students answer if they didnt know. It was such a positive experience and it encouraged us to be curious and just ask about other things we didnt understand even if that wasnt in the curriculum. Miss that lady. 1 of the best teachers ever

Summary of the talk: "Confidence is a SKILL you can build"
    1. Build it by practicing! The more you have tried something over and over again the more confident you become. Practice, repeat and persevere. The more you fail and keep going, the more confident you'll be
    2. Stop the negative self talk. You're shooting yourself in the foot, tell yourself "I am the greatest!". You'll be surprised at how much that helps you keep going.
    3. Get away from the negative people. You're already struggling not to tell yourself "God I look fat, I'm no good at this" You don't need other people to make this even worse.
    4. Build other people's confidence: Focus on what people do well. Don't try to correct their mistakes
    5. Interpret feedback in a way that builds your confidence. Instead of "Wow that interview went shitty. I gave a terrible answer to 8/10 questions." say "Hey I did 2/10 questions pretty good! I'm gonna ace those on the next interview!"

Confidence comes from competence. Competence comes from repetition.
Repetition happens when you interpret failure in a positive way (positive affirmations to create good beliefs). Others can have confidence in you only when you are confident in yourself.

      @b1zika 5 років тому +2

Nah you're wrong. Confidence doesnt come from competence...You could be with 5 degrees in whatever area you'd like. That doesnt define you overall as a confident person. It just makes you good at some area or at least you think you are. Life is complex thing. There's no magic button as the guy said there's no universal solution to problems. You cant automatically assume you're confident because of your competence. In this case you thinking that you're confident would be becuase of your set of mind and understanding about how life works. Its your own thoughts and feelings. What im trying to say it that nothing works one and only one way. We're different people. You cant put one word and make the conclution of how it works and think that its universal and other people can apply this set of mind. And boom magic happens... Confidence is more than just that. Its mindset, its feelings and tons more stuff that come together
