Kensington Philadelphia Drug & Crime Problems
Violent crime and drug abuse in Philadelphia as a whole is a major problem. The city’s violent crime rate is higher than the national average and other similarly sized metropolitan areas.1 Also alarming is Philadelphia’s drug overdose rate. The number of drug overdose deaths in the city increased by 50% from 2013 to 2015, with more than twice as many deaths from drug overdoses as deaths from homicides in 2015.2 A big part of Philadelphia’s problems stem from the crime rate and drug abuse in Kensington.
Because of the high number of drugs in Kensington, the neighborhood has a drug crime rate of 3.57, the third-highest rate by neighborhood in Philadelphia.3 Like a lot of the country, a big part of this issue is a result of the opioid epidemic. Opioid abuse has skyrocketed over the last two decades in the United States and Philadelphia is no exception. Along with having a high rate of drug overdose deaths, 80% percent of Philadelphia’s overdose deaths involved opioids2 and Kensington is a big contributor to this number. This Philly neighborhood is purportedly the largest open-air narcotics market for heroin on the East Coast with many neighboring residents flocking to the area for heroin and other opioids.4 With such a high number of drugs in Kensington, many state and local officials have zoned in on this area to try and tackle Philadelphia’s problem.

I know people are trying to help by giving free food, clothes, etc... But I wonder if this just makes it easier for the addicts to maintain the status quo. I'm not criticizing people for wanting to help, I just don't know if giving them stuff is the best way. I don't know what the answer is, it seems so out of control.

It’s a minimum of 60 days for the baby to go through withdrawal (neonatal abstinence syndrome). The docs I worked with used morphine as it’s the safest for infants. These moms never go home with their baby. There’s no connection to the baby. Their connection is to the drug. Sadly, Most moms don’t even stay to visit the infant. The infant is all alone except for nurses and sometimes extended family.

Many of these people are in a trap. Mental health facilities won't take addicts, and rehab centers can't deal with the mentally ill. A lot of addicts seem crazy because they are. They self medicate to try and control whatever is going on in their head. This starts a downward spiral of more and harder drugs.
As a side note, have you studied the mental hospitals of the 60's? At least the state run ones were largely overwhelmed and underfunded. They were nightmare factories. Given the choice, I'd probably take my chances on the streets.

Just thinking back 2my days as a youth growing up in the fishtown - kensington area I can recall times where things would get bad and also times when they would get noticeably better. But never in my life did I ever imagine that this would be acceptable to the officials who have let this problem continue to the point where we as a community have accepted this as our norm. I hope 1 day soon that accountability will be accepted by 1-the people who have been and continue 2b paid but clearly aren't concerned with the safety & progress of both Kensington as well as Philadelphia as a whole. Once that happens hopefully we as a community can do our part moving towards a solution and the people who are caught up living the life that's out there can take the steps needed towards making there life and in turn our neighborhood a place of happiness & prosperity 🙏

@Brandon Cruz of the hundreds of contents you ate the first to mention the big pharma opioid crisis. Which came about during the bush administrations. Everybody wants to believe this happened over night. This was brewing for a very long time. And now it's the liberals fault. As long as we focus on blaming one or the other political group, we have a reason to say good riddance. Truth is we will bail out the corporate degenerates and leave the broken and poor to kill themselves without conscience. No funding for schools, or child care, or the sick or the elderly. Is it any wonder people give up? It's been this way for many generations. This is what happens to systemically oppressed people and neighborhoods. This gets worse because we let it. Glad that there was an add for a drug treatment center, tho. What a joke! Another Capitolist corporation feeding on societies ill and disenfranchised.

I also used to box out of the Frankford PAL which was in the old firehouse on Frankford Avenue near Mater Dolorosa. I had a few fights in a gym off of Clearfield Street. When I was a kid K&A was full of a bunch of tough Irish people, who probably left for the suburbs. I couldn't afford college after high school and I joined the Marines, and after that, I never looked back on Philadelphia and I now live in a rural area down south.

    What a Wonderful World
    Song by Louis Armstrong
    I see trees of green
    Red roses too
    I see them bloom
    For me and you
    And I think to myself
    What a wonderful world
    I see skies of blue
    And clouds of white
    The bright blessed day
    The dark sacred night
    And I think to myself
    What a wonderful world
    The colors of the rainbow
    So pretty in the sky
    Are also on the faces
    Of people going by
    I see friends shaking hands
    Saying how do you do
    They're really saying
    I love you
    I hear babies cry
    I watch them grow
    They'll learn much more
    Than I'll ever know
    And I think to myself
    What a wonderful world
    Yes, I think to myself

You see mostly newer and rather expensive looking automobiles. That's where the wealth of this impoverished area is - in the form of lease payments - no really owned - just kinda rented for a while. Or maybe financed for 7 years - still, never really owning it. The bank or finance company actually hold title to the car. So in reality, when asked why don't you take better care of your neighborhood, the real answer is that no one there actually OWNS anything. How can you invest in a neighborhood when the people that live there have nothing to their names but a leased car, some sticks of furniture and the clothes on their backs? You see the local businesses struggling just to survive yet another night and day of numbing street traffic. There is no work for these people - those who can work - all the blue collar jobs moved offshore over the past 30 years or more and no one noticed. When Reagan emptied out all the mental institutions in the mid-80's he put more than half this population out on the street without even a paddle - no way to pay for those new anti-schitzophrantic medications without any insurance. So they don't take them and wind up here in the video. Along with the hopelessly addicted. Urban renewal sure could be used.
