Kensington Philadelphia Drug & Crime Problems
Violent crime and drug abuse in Philadelphia as a whole is a major problem. The city’s violent crime rate is higher than the national average and other similarly sized metropolitan areas.1 Also alarming is Philadelphia’s drug overdose rate. The number of drug overdose deaths in the city increased by 50% from 2013 to 2015, with more than twice as many deaths from drug overdoses as deaths from homicides in 2015.2 A big part of Philadelphia’s problems stem from the crime rate and drug abuse in Kensington.
Because of the high number of drugs in Kensington, the neighborhood has a drug crime rate of 3.57, the third-highest rate by neighborhood in Philadelphia.3 Like a lot of the country, a big part of this issue is a result of the opioid epidemic. Opioid abuse has skyrocketed over the last two decades in the United States and Philadelphia is no exception. Along with having a high rate of drug overdose deaths, 80% percent of Philadelphia’s overdose deaths involved opioids2 and Kensington is a big contributor to this number. This Philly neighborhood is purportedly the largest open-air narcotics market for heroin on the East Coast with many neighboring residents flocking to the area for heroin and other opioids.4 With such a high number of drugs in Kensington, many state and local officials have zoned in on this area to try and tackle Philadelphia’s problem.
Just walking around that neighborhood for a day should be enough to keep you from wanting to do drugs. Worse than a 3rd country
"from" wanting I think.

I know people are trying to help by giving free food, clothes, etc... But I wonder if this just makes it easier for the addicts to maintain the status quo. I'm not criticizing people for wanting to help, I just don't know if giving them stuff is the best way. I don't know what the answer is, it seems so out of control.
I had the same thoughts...helping them is like enabling them to stay like this...hm.....🤔🤔
L C- are they helpers or enablers?. Take your pick.
@Patricia Lynn The helpers and the enabler‘s are interchangeable, I suspect The people handing out clothes one week are the same people who handed out needles the next week, all of this work is done in the name of safety,
There’s a difference between poor people and drug addicts. Feeding & clothing the addicts is downright retarded.
Oh, plus free haircuts, needles, phones, etc. it’s absurd.
Free food, free water, free medical treatment, free clothes, free cellphone......are we helping or are we enabling? This is a filthy demeaning life that you wouldn't wish on anyone.
I assume because they are humans and have people that still love them no matter what we will all have are judgement day !!!!!
@@Damngina33 it's not about not loving, it's about are we hurting them more. The only reason you watch a video like this is because you DO care.

I worked in NICU for several years and we had drug addicted babies all the time (all hospitals do). It’s a minimum of 60 days for the baby to go through withdrawal (neonatal abstinence syndrome). The docs I worked with used morphine as it’s the safest for infants. These moms never go home with their baby. There’s no connection to the baby. Their connection is to the drug. Sadly, Most moms don’t even stay to visit the infant. The infant is all alone except for nurses and sometimes extended family.

You barely see kids walking and playing around the town from the previous videos. I would assume these kids have to stay indoors because the streets has been taken over by crime and drugs. If you are a parent and you live in these neighborhood, you better give your kids the childhood that they deserve. Move out of the city and live somewhere else.
kids go to safe blocks where its safe to go, junkies don't really go down little streets so thats where you'll find kids.
@Ann Hanover Looks like a lotta white people flew back and became street addicts.👀
We left Philly last year after the riots. Having no safety for a week with anarchy two blocks from our house was the last straw. You are on your own in Philly. It’s insanity. Now we live in Kentucky where kids are playing and riding bikes everywhere. America is two different worlds. Philly literally oppresses people and holds them down.

Remember when they closed all the mental hospitals in the 60s and 70s? I do.
Many of these people are in a trap. Mental health facilities won't take addicts, and rehab centers can't deal with the mentally ill. A lot of addicts seem crazy because they are. They self medicate to try and control whatever is going on in their head. This starts a downward spiral of more and harder drugs.
As a side note, have you studied the mental hospitals of the 60's? At least the state run ones were largely overwhelmed and underfunded. They were nightmare factories. Given the choice, I'd probably take my chances on the streets.
I remember the week they cut loose 300 patients from Byberry and put them on the streets. Who the fuck thought that was a good idea?
Who's down to do a charity event here with me and feed 1,000 people and have them sign up for detox asap??

Just thinking back 2my days as a youth growing up in the fishtown - kensington area I can recall times where things would get bad and also times when they would get noticeably better. But never in my life did I ever imagine that this would be acceptable to the officials who have let this problem continue to the point where we as a community have accepted this as our norm. I hope 1 day soon that accountability will be accepted by 1-the people who have been and continue 2b paid but clearly aren't concerned with the safety & progress of both Kensington as well as Philadelphia as a whole. Once that happens hopefully we as a community can do our part moving towards a solution and the people who are caught up living the life that's out there can take the steps needed towards making there life and in turn our neighborhood a place of happiness & prosperity 🙏

@Brandon Cruz of the hundreds of contents you ate the first to mention the big pharma opioid crisis. Which came about during the bush administrations. Everybody wants to believe this happened over night. This was brewing for a very long time. And now it's the liberals fault. As long as we focus on blaming one or the other political group, we have a reason to say good riddance. Truth is we will bail out the corporate degenerates and leave the broken and poor to kill themselves without conscience. No funding for schools, or child care, or the sick or the elderly. Is it any wonder people give up? It's been this way for many generations. This is what happens to systemically oppressed people and neighborhoods. This gets worse because we let it. Glad that there was an add for a drug treatment center, tho. What a joke! Another Capitolist corporation feeding on societies ill and disenfranchised.

So Kensington avenue in Philadelphia is ground zero for the zombie apocalypse. What else is new?
This is compelling, because it's just so unimaginable that we have places like this in the US. How do you even begin to turn this around and get the community back and the people off the drugs? It's very sad.
.......Its like who can you blame for such misery and distraction. Such shameful evil......to have this kind of thing in our society.
I truly believe God has been proving the point to humanity that without him things only get worse and worse.. the only solution has also been him but people rebel and refuse God's help.
You find out what brought them to the drugs in the first place. By dealing with the reasons is where you will find the solutions, putting a bandaid on the problem will solve nothing. When society falls that far down something has sadly gone very wrong.
Getting off that shit is virtually impossible without help and guidance. But there is not a single druggie including myself from experience that will quit unless they really want to and do it.

Wow, Some of these people can't even get up. When I was a kid I grew up in Philadelphia, I went to Mater Dolorosa and to Northeast Catholic. The dark sacred night

Of people going by
I see friends shaking hands
Saying how do you do
They're really saying

I live in the Pocono's about 2 hrs north from Philly 66 SWM on SSI, Living alone as too bad for others alone too in the world. Hundreds of yrs ago citys with extra loose people would not be like this, as Ships would come in to port of the city's around the world, gather up the people and ship them to the south on plantations & places of building & being positively productive. as the video shows no shoes on many = homeless I'm guessing.
You see mostly newer and rather expensive looking automobiles. That's where the wealth of this impoverished area is - in the form of lease payments - no really owned - just kinda rented for a while. Or maybe financed for 7 years - still, never really owning it. The bank or finance company actually hold title to the car. So in reality, when asked why don't you take better care of your neighborhood, the real answer is that no one there actually OWNS anything. How can you invest in a neighborhood when the people that live there have nothing to their names but a leased car, some sticks of furniture and the clothes on their backs? You see the local businesses struggling just to survive yet another night and day of numbing street traffic. There is no work for these people - those who can work - all the blue collar jobs moved offshore over the past 30 years or more and no one noticed. When Reagan emptied out all the mental institutions in the mid-80's he put more than half this population out on the street without even a paddle - no way to pay for those new anti-schitzophrantic medications without any insurance. So they don't take them and wind up here in the video. Along with the hopelessly addicted. Urban renewal sure could be used.
Kensington is unique. The city has turned it’s back on this hood. five blocks away you see gentrified streets with brand new, expensive apartments and condos. Nearby Fishtown is chock-full of construction dumpsters, contractors gutting houses and renovating To sell at three times the purchase price.
