Kensington Philadelphia Drug & Crime Problems
Violent crime and drug abuse in Philadelphia as a whole is a major problem. The city’s violent crime rate is higher than the national average and other similarly sized metropolitan areas.1 Also alarming is Philadelphia’s drug overdose rate. The number of drug overdose deaths in the city increased by 50% from 2013 to 2015, with more than twice as many deaths from drug overdoses as deaths from homicides in 2015.2 A big part of Philadelphia’s problems stem from the crime rate and drug abuse in Kensington.
Because of the high number of drugs in Kensington, the neighborhood has a drug crime rate of 3.57, the third-highest rate by neighborhood in Philadelphia.3 Like a lot of the country, a big part of this issue is a result of the opioid epidemic. Opioid abuse has skyrocketed over the last two decades in the United States and Philadelphia is no exception. Along with having a high rate of drug overdose deaths, 80% percent of Philadelphia’s overdose deaths involved opioids2 and Kensington is a big contributor to this number. This Philly neighborhood is purportedly the largest open-air narcotics market for heroin on the East Coast with many neighboring residents flocking to the area for heroin and other opioids.4 With such a high number of drugs in Kensington, many state and local officials have zoned in on this area to try and tackle Philadelphia’s problem.

Look at a map of the Kensington area; I counted five schools within walking distance of Kensington and there may be more that I missed. I've seen videos showing school buses driving on the streets and parents walking with their school age children. I'm 77 years old and these kids have been exposed to more drug activity than I have in my entire life and that includes 15 months service in Vietnam!

My childhood friend had a restaurant in this neighborhood as little kids we would sit in the car outside and wait for my friend's mom. When the area turned bad in early/mid 80s, My friends dad worked so hard to keep it going. I guess he thought the area would turn around eventually. Frankford Colonial Dinner. RIP Nick and Bob. I couldn't either. It is deeply tragic. People make such a big deal about 'public health crisis', yet nothing is being done about the millions suffering from the nightmare of addiction. These people need medical intervention if they are to get off that stuff. For most of them, there is a definite danger they could die going through detox.
There is a way out, many ways. But someone has to be out of their stupor in order to do it.
I have spent a few decades in 12 step groups, I am quite familiar with what these folks go through. And I have seen many find their way out. Only, After they get out of the biochemical trap of addiction.

I wonder whether their own families and their local government have given up on these Kensington habitants. I hope there are plans and efforts to save them from their situation. I wish they can all be shepherded into one facility where they can be bathed, fed, treated, loved, spiritually counselled, skills-trained., value-reoriented, and consistently and persistently guided and monitored. God knows what brought them to these predicaments. I am from a third world country with many of my own family members now working and living good lives in America and it is hard to see that this leading country's own people live and exist this way. I can only offer daily prayers that one way or another, they get to live better lives.

They aren't forgotten. That's the sickest part. They were pushed into this state of reality because a core function of capitalism is to establish the commercial value of opportunity, as compared to the commercial value of human life. If you aren't productive enough, you will continuously fall until you slip through the cracks and either die, or walk the streets as a corpse. The zombie apocalypse trope isn't about a disease of the body or mind, it's a disease of society itself. The disease we inflict by forcing everyone to fit into the system of faith we call Economics. These people are an advertisement to others. One that reminds them of the alternative to throwing their lives away on the dreams of people who are already wealthy.
Our society is intentionally creating false economic scarcity in order to coerce people into working jobs that are not gainful and often serve to harm the economy overall by siphoning wealth out of the country to foreign holdings. It's slavery of the mind for those on the street boufed outa their minds, AND for everyone passing them who hasn't quite fallen through the cracks yet.
It's criminal that in the wealthiest nation of all recorded human history that a single human being is left to waste away in poverty. We have enough resources and income to empower every single human born in this country to be ANYTHING better than this. We just have to stop letting wealth consolidators take resources they don't need and embrace the idea that some people just want to exist. And that's just fine too.

@@kaymadd a lot of things really. The cost of living does not match wages, not even close. Most people are only 1 missed paycheck away from homelessness and from there it is very hard to get out if you dont have social supports (friends, family, etc). The pandemic caused a lot of people to lose their jobs (if they ever had one to begin with). Healthcare is very inaccessible because of how expensive it is, and mental healthcare even more so. Once drugs are involved it becomes even harder to get out of the cycle because there are the issues of physical dependency (quitting some drugs without tapering use can even cause death) and psychological addiction (self medicating physical or mental ailments or just needing a distraction from how shitty life is). Basically the only options for these people are things that require a lot of time and resources, and because the government literally does not care its up to the charity of people who see these people as subhuman. Those social services that are "available" for people to go to for help are severely overworked and overburdened by the amount of people who need help

Lived less than a mile from KnA and Clearfield, towards Port Richmond, a little over a decade ago. Moved to Philadelphia from the midwest to do service work. It was rough then, but nothing like now. Back then it was sketchy, dangerous even if you didn't keep your head up and on swivel. I was just some dumb naive kid but was mostly fine. There was one time I had to pull my work knife as I suspect a person at night was about to jump me. There was a shooting in my neighborhood but it was targeted. I figured that it came with the territory of living in a major city. I still figure that's all it was. Now to see what the area I traveled through every day of my time in Philly has turned into it's absolutely incredible. This is worse than I could ever imagine a major american city could be. I used to regularly grab the bus on corner across the street from the KnA stop, near the old Wells Fargo. Back then there wasn't a tent encampment next to Walgreens. That was always clear. People were constantly walking around but no one leaned over like zombies. People slept on the ground, and there was definitely homeless, but nothing like this. What the hell happened?

Almost every aid program Philadelphia has enacted to help the homeless and drug addicts has been abused by the local suburbs and townships. They'll round up THEIR homeless and drug addicts, tell them "Philly will help" and then pay for their transit. When you do that instead of following the example, you get one decent social program overburdened and unable to help, with the homeless population skyrocketing. As a Philadelphia local, I have nothing but disdain for my fellow Pennsylvanians for the kind of shit they pull whenever our local government finds something that MIGHT work in terms of helping people. It's bad enough the rest of the state actively works to sabotage us up in Harrisburg with the ridiculous charter school quotas sapping our education and attempts to slash SEPTA's funding to cut out our commuting workforce. But adding to our homeless population bc we want to provide a little humanitarian aid really takes the fucking cake, for me at least.
